Hello friends,Welcome back to our Saturday coffee klatch, where today we explore the real story behind Trump's so-called “wins” in the New Hampshire primary and last week's Iowa caucuses — and why they're actually big losses for Trump. After all, he was president between 2017 and 2021, and a former president has a presumed lock on his party's nomination. What's extraordinary is how well Nikki Haley did on Tuesday. We also talk with Congressman Ro Khanna — one of the sharpest and most progressive members of Congress — about these Trump losses, what they signify for the general election, and how Biden can best cut through the noise and demagoguery to show voters why he deserves another term. So please grab a cup, pull up a chair, and join us (and if you wish, take this week's coffee klatch poll). Thanks for joining us. This is John McGlothlen with The Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Monday, April 25th. Today in the Cedar Rapids area we can expect it to be partly sunny, with a high near 48, according to the National Weather Service. Winds from the northwest 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Then tonight, it should be mostly clear, with a low around 28. A man in the Cedar River, clinging to a concrete wall, was rescued Saturday afternoon by fire crews. Authorities said the man, who they did not identify, was spotted before 1 p.m. on the river's west bank near First Avenue and First Street W. They did not say how he came to be in the water. Rescuers threw ropes over the wall to the man, who was growing weak holding on, and lowered a firefighter down to secure him. A boat was launched and crews plucked the man — and the firefighter — to safety. He was evaluated by an Area Ambulance crew, but the Fire Department said it does not know if the man was taken to a hospital. Former Vice President Mike Pence dropped by the Cedar Rapids Kernels game against the Peoria Chiefs Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium, along with U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson. Pence was also in western Iowa Saturday to join U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra in serving breakfast to delegates at Iowa's Republican 4th Congressional District convention in Carroll at the high school. —
This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, March 8. There will be a few days without snow to give our latest batch a chance to melt. Tuesday night it will be partly cloudy, with a low around 24 degrees. One teenager was killed and two others were critically wounded in Des Moines Monday after gunfire that appeared to come from a passing vehicle struck them outside East High School, according to reporting from the Associated Press. Des Moines police said in a news release that potential suspects have been detained in the shooting on the grounds of the high school, near Des Moines' downtown. No charges were immediately filed. Authorities said initially the three teenagers were critically injured in the shooting. A 15-year-old boy was then declared dead, while two female victims, ages 16 and 18, were still listed as critically injured as of Monday night. The two girls are students at the high school, while the boy was not a student there, according to police. Police did not release any of their names as of Monday night. According to the Washington Post, a tornado that killed seven people in southwest Iowa Saturday may have done so partially due to a delay in the national alarm system. A total of 17 tornado warnings were issued by the National Weather Service in Des Moines on Saturday. However, a system problem happening nationally at the same time caused a delay in these local alerts. Susan Buchanan, the weather service's director of public affairs, wrote that “a technical issue caused a delay of between 2-7 minutes for some transmissions,” noting that “system engineers quickly took action as soon as the problem was detected.” She emphasized that warning lead times averaged about 20 minutes during the tornado outbreak. By granting the $19.2 million https://www.thegazette.com/higher-education/steindler-delays-north-liberty-project-given-partner-prospect-with-in-state-hospital-system/ (project a “certificate of need,”) the five-member State Health Facilities Council cleared the way for construction of a new 35,880-square-foot ambulatory surgery center on 36 acres off Interstate 380 and Forevergreen Road in North Liberty. The project will unfold just about 1.5 miles east of the North Liberty tract where University of Iowa Health Care is building a new $395 million, 469,000-square-foot hospital, marking major development in North Liberty's medical corridor. Mercy Iowa City in February https://www.thegazette.com/health-care-medicine/steindler-orthopedic-partnering-with-mercy-iowa-city-on-north-liberty-medical-park/ (announced a new partnership with Steindler) to help develop the North Liberty campus. The National Weather Service on Sunday predicted 3 to 5 inches of snow during the overnight hours for the Cedar Rapids area. It will be cloudy through mid-morning Monday, then gradually clearing, with a steady temperature around 28. Winds are expected from the northwest, 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible. Then tonight, it should be clear with a low around 15. Seven people were killed when several tornadoes swept through Iowa Saturday night. It was the state's deadliest storm in more than a decade. Emergency management officials in Madison County said four were injured and six people were killed when one tornado touched down in the area southwest of Des Moines near the town of Winterset around 4:30 p.m. Among those killed were two children under the age of 5 and four adults. In Lucas County, about 54 miles southeast of Des Moines, officials confirmed one death and multiple reported injuries when a separate system struck less than an hour later. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said the person who died there was in a recreational vehicle at a campground at Red Haw State Park in Chariton. One of those injured was also at the park. In women's basketball, the No. 2-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes are Big Ten tournament champions after their 74-67 win over the No. 5-seeded Indiana Hoosiers Sunday. It marks the first time Iowa women's basketball has won the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles in the same year. The duo of guard Caitlin Clark and center Monika Czinano fueled Iowa's offense Sunday, combining to score 48 points. Czinano had a team-high 30 points on 13-for-18 shooting and 10 rebounds. Clark had 18 points on 6-for-17 shooting and seven rebounds. Support for this podcast provided by New Pioneer Food Co-op. This is John McGlothlen with The Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Monday, Oct. 18th. According to the National Weather Service, we can expect sunny skies, with a high near 74. Winds from the south at 5 to 10 mph. Then tonight, mostly clear, with a low around 48. A North Liberty man with a history of sex crimes is in the Johnson County Jail, accused of raping a woman on a rooftop in downtown Iowa City this summer. According to an Iowa City Police Department criminal complaint, around 1:40 a.m. July 25th, a woman was leaving a bar and trying to find her friends when a man took her by the arm, guided her outside and up to a rooftop area. The man pushed her to the ground and sexually assaulted her, while covering her mouth with his hand and yelling at her as she told him to stop, the complaint stated. After the alleged assault, the woman led officers to the rooftop area in the 200 block of East Washington Street and police found an Iowa driver's license belonging to Fitsum Russell. Also, police said a sexual assault kit located DNA that matched Russell's. Russell was booked into the Johnson County Jail on Friday night, charged with third-degree sexual abuse — second or subsequent offense. The repeat offense enhanced charge raises the offense level from a Class C felony to a Class A felony. He is being held on $150,000 cash or surety bond. Russell has three previous sex crime convictions in Linn and Johnson counties. The unranked Purdue Boilermakers upset No. 2 Iowa Saturday, 24-7, shocking the college football world and upending the Hawkeyes' College Football Playoff aspirations. Iowa never led in what turned into an ugly Saturday. For the second consecutive week, Iowa found itself in a double-digit deficit, but didn't muster a second-half comeback this time. Former President Donald Trump came to Iowa Saturday for a rally attended by thousands at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. It was his first public appearance in Iowa since just before the 2020 election. During more than two hours of remarks at Saturday night's rally, Trump showed no indication he has any intention of relinquishing his assault on those 2020 election results with his false claims of voter fraud. Early in his remarks he claimed that the election was “rigged.” Gov. Kim Reynolds, U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, U.S. Reps. Ashley Hinson and Mariannette Miller-Meeks, and former acting U.S. Attorney General Matt Whitaker all spoke earlier in the event. The Hawkeyes moved to No. 2 in the Associated Press Poll following their nail-biting 23-20 win over Penn State Saturday. With 6:26 left in the game, Spencer Petras threw a touchdown pass to Nico Ragaini who, despite being hit by an Penn State linebacker, landed on the inside of an end zone pylon for the score.
