Communication is a delicate dance requiring awareness of four critical layers: what we mean to say, what we actually say, what others hear, and what they think we mean. Amanda Schenkenberger and Elizabeth Green explore how understanding these layers transforms family dynamics and builds stronger connections.• The "yellow light" approach: slowing down when tension rises to respond thoughtfully instead of reacting• Using breathing techniques (longer exhales than inhales) to calm your nervous system in tense moments• Understanding how different personality types and values affect communication styles• Adapting your communication to match your child's unique wiring and needs• Transitioning from "sage on the stage" to "guide on the side" as children grow• Allowing natural consequences to build responsibility in a safe environment• Recognizing metacognition (thinking about your thinking) as the foundation of self-awarenessJoin Amanda for her free "Calm the Chaos" event in early April, specifically designed for homeschool moms wanting to address internal, routine, and relational chaos. You can also connect with Amanda on Facebook, Instagram, and her website.

Elizabeth Green has nearly 40 years of experience working with infants, toddlers, and families and currently serves families as a sleep consultant.Elizabeth refers to herself as a sleep doula, because as there's tons of conflicting advice around sleep, she helps families figure out what their needs are and works with them from right where they are.As Elizabeth says in the episode “It's not sleep training, it's sleep learning”.Parents need to find a balance where the needs of their children are being met but also that the needs of the parents are being met— and sometimes that means mama hires a sleep consultant so she can get her baby and herself more sleep at night. To learn more about Elizabeth and her services, head to EarlyParentingSleepSupport.comThis is what we're doing with the Be Her Village gift registry: is helping moms and families realize their own needs, and then getting the funds to pay for the support to meet those needs. “If you're going to be at the heart of [Amazon operations], that's going to require you to be deeply entrenched.” -Elizabeth Greene The goal of every seller is to make more sales, but it is a real challenge to get visibility in the market. Approximately 80% of buyers only buy from page one of the search results and about 70% value organic rankings. Thankfully, there are advertising agencies that offer their expertise in this specific arena such as Junglr. In this episode, Nick and Junglr's Cofounder, Elizabeth Green share how you can leverage pay-per-click (PPC) advertising on Amazon. They also discuss important things you need to know about keywords, driving traffic, infographics, getting more positive reviews and increasing seller ratings, building out launch campaigns and Amazon operations, deciding on good pricing points, managing crises, and building your team. Running ad campaigns does not mean you'll automatically get more sales. It will take time, but you will have a joyful reap if you do not give up. Consistency is key. And while you're doing that, tune in and discover how you can claim your spot on Amazon's page one. On this month's episode, our host Elizabeth Hopkins shines a spotlight on America's other pandemic, the opioid crisis. Even beyond the tens of thousands of deaths annually, the true effect of this wide-reaching crisis stretches far beyond calculable figures. The multifaceted problem of addiction can only be addressed when we begin with increasing empathy and rejecting the impulse to stigmatize. Elizabeth has a conversation with her colleague Elizabeth Green, and with Elizabeth's client, Liz Pires, who tells the unimaginable story of losing both of her children, Megan and Matthew, to substance use disorder. Liz describes how frustrating it was for her that despite having insurance, it wouldn't pay for what the doctors and medical experts were recommending to treat her children. She wanted her children “to have every chance to overcome this.” Unfortunately, that was not the reality for Megan and Matthew. It's Liz's hope that through large-scale societal changes with insurance payments, medical care, and criminal justice reform other moms won't have to go through what she went through with her own children's diseases, and other young people can fully recover. You can find out more about Liz Pires' foundations at:https://lastoverdose.org/ and the Matthew and Megan Endowed Excellence Fund Thank you for listening and look out for Episode 10 on December 3.

In the 1830s, Rev. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet's method of teaching reading to deaf children was evolutionary and became inviting enough that the then secretary of education, Horace Munn, adopted to teaching it to neurotypical children; the logic being, if the teaching strategy works for the deaf it must work wonders for all. It wasn't until much later that that it was discovered how ill-fitted such an extrapolation was. For far too long the culture has harbored a dreamy notion that gifted teachers are born and not made and they turn naive children into the learned ones with some magical powers and the techniques involved in teaching are a matter of personal will. What if that's simply a myth?On this episode, author, journalist, and CEO and co-founder of Chalkbeat, Elizabeth Green, discusses that becoming a great teacher is attainable to all through the mastery of specific learned key skills unique to the profession of teaching. As Thomas Jefferson warned us, “we cannot be a powerful nation and illiterate too”; we must acknowledge the dazzling intellectual challenge teaching poses and prepare accordingly.About Elizabeth GreenElizabeth Green is the CEO and co-founder of Chalkbeat, the nonprofit news organization dedicated to improving educational equity through local, independent, high-impact journalism. Since launching in 2014, Chalkbeat's reporting has spurred changes in education funding, legislation, policy, and practice and is regularly cited or republished in dozens of publications, including The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Atlantic, Vox, and more. When you're the black sheep of the family, you've got nothing to lose when it's time to finally be heard. Elizabeth Green was born in Croydon, Surrey, and is the "never heard of" sister of shamed British billionaire Sir Philip Green of TopShop. Her memoir, Not In The Script, is very much an open book on her life, family and constant search for love. It is a chance for her to finally have a voice about who she is--at 72. Elizabeth believes "70 is the new 60" and she is still looking for a serious boyfriend in NYC (using all the popular apps, including Black People Meet), after she learned that first she had to find love in herself before she could love someone else. Hello my name is Elizabeth Anne Green. After 33 years of being in prison, I have learned to give back instead of hurting others. It is very sad that I had to come to prison to learn that I should not do drugs and not hurt others in order to get money. I have done many things to improve myself. These things include taking victim awareness, thinking for a change, and drug-related groups among others. I tried very hard to mentor other inmates coming to prison so they don't become like me, learning the hard way like I did. Each day, I try to improve my life [inaudible]. Being in a place like this can become very hard, but I fight to change way of thinking, so I will never have to repeat my past mistakes. Now, I just want to give back. I even earned my GED. Now I am a tutor, love learning and going. My name is Elizabeth Green, and I'm a life worthy of progress. Thank you. These commentaries are recorded by Noelle Hanrahan of Prison Radio.
Hello, my friends! I hope all is well with you and those in your life! Have you ever heard someone share that you oughtn't judge someone else because you don't know what it's like to walk in their shoes? Well, saddle up, my friends, because on this episode, I'm happy to feature my friend Elizabeth Green. Elizabeth is a restaurateur here in NYC, owner and proprietor of PlantedNYC. She's also the author of her recently published memoir, "Not In The Script." Elizabeth is also sister to billionaire businessman Sir Philip Green, the chairman of the Arcadia Group. In this conversation, Elizabeth opens up about her decision to writing her book (and her decision to share very openly and transparently). She dives into her experience in her family, from feeling oft-overlooked by their mom, to being not invited at her famous brother's events. Elizabeth discusses some of the incredibly engaging stories that she shares in her book, including her decision to end her marriage, romance and sex in India, as well as an abortion early on in her life. We talk shop, and some of the challenges Elizabeth has faced operating her restaurant here in NYC (by reason of being a woman, by reason of being an immigrant, by reason of her family ties). Finally, Elizabeth leaves us with a super-powerful lesson that would improve so many relationships and so many lives if we took action on it. Walk a mile in these shoes. Founder's syndrome is a thing, y'all. As many of us have seen, founders can struggle once their organizations grow and scale because the skills set and mindset of starting an organization is different than managing it. Join me and Elizabeth Green, CEO of Chalkbeat, to share how she grew her passion project into a multi-city, multi-million dollar national nonprofit. She's one of the rare people who knew exactly what she wanted to do when she grew up and doesn't struggle with control issues (like so many of us founder-types!). She is real and authentic about the challenges of growth, her own learning about building inclusive work environments and how insecurity can wreck a leader. What can a viral video of a teacher ripping up an elementary schooler's book tell us about government regulation and management? In this inaugural recording, Sam and Abram try to unpack some of the arguments and assumptions in Elizabeth Green's January 2018 article in The Atlantic: “The Charter School Crusader” about Eva Moskowitz and the school system she founded and now leads: Success Academy Charter Schools. First, we explore the context of the education reform movement in NYC and restructuring of public schools during the Bloomberg era. This gives way to a discussion of the terms revolutionary and radical—which we define as an effort to change the underlying structures and systems. Moskowitz positions herself as a revolutionary because she is changing the school system with entrepreneurial leadership and top-down authority, all while operating as a private citizen. Sam and Abram ask whether revolutionary change must include activating the power of a mass movement of the people, and holding oneself accountable to the public. This leads to a discussion about end goals, efficiency, and accountability. Moskowitz believes she can most effectively make change as a private citizen, but uses public funds in the process. Sam and Abram untangle this puzzle and raise more questions, like: Is efficiency more important than making schools equitable, accountable, and parent-friendly? How do we, as bureaucrats, hold ourselves accountable to the services we need to provide in real-time while also asking ourselves deeper question about our goals and measures? How do race and school segregation play into this debate? We've all had great teachers who opened our minds — and maybe even changed our lives. But how can we make every teacher a star teacher? Elizabeth Green's New York Times best-selling book 'Building a Better Teacher: How Teaching Works (and How to Teach It to Everyone)' presents teaching as a complex skill — one that requires infrastructure for support and training. She gives examples of the methods America's best educators are using in the classroom, as well as how Japan's education system has adopted policies that have changed teachers across the country. Green discusses her book with Stanford University's renowned mathematics education professor Jo Boaler. Boaler is co-founder of YouCubed, and online resource for educators and families.
How often have heard parents complain about their kids' teachers? Everyone, it seems, has opinions about education, test scores and schools. Who is to blame for poor teaching, and how do we fix it? What makes a teacher great? Elizabeth Green, editor-in-chief of Chalkbeat, is the author of "Building a Better Teacher." She studied teaching methods in America and Japan, and has some innovative solutions. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Her book, Building a Better Teacher, will be published in August 2014 by W. W. Norton. About Building a Better Teacher: How Teaching Works (and How to Teach It to Everyone) What happens in the classroom of a great teacher? Opening with a moment-by-moment portrait of an everyday math lesson—a drama of urgent decisions and artful maneuvers—Building a Better Teacher demonstrates the unexpected complexity of teaching. Green focuses on the questions that really matter: How do we prepare teachers and what should they know before they enter the classroom? How does one get young minds to reason, conjecture, prove, and understand? What are the keys to good discipline? Incorporating new research from cognitive psychologists and education specialists as well as intrepid classroom entrepreneurs, Green provides a new way for parents to judge what their children need in the classroom and considers how to scale good ideas. Ultimately, Green discovers that good teaching is a skill. A skill that can be taught. Almost every aspect of our culture and economy has been touched by technology and creative destruction. Still, three areas have lagged behind, and all three are beginning to be addressed and changed. They are finance, healthcare and education.Although incumbents still rule in healthcare and finance, the ground is beginning to shift. But in education, less so. The very fact that we are still debating the merits and sanctity of practices that date to the agrarian age, is telling. But change is happening. Throughout the country small individual efforts are being made. Efforts that reexamine the questions at the very foundation of learning of understanding and putting knowledge to use. One thing that hasn’t changed, is that teachers are still on the front lines. For them too, it will be change or perish. Elizabeth Green takes a deep look into this change, in Building a Better Teacher: How Teaching Works. My conversation with Elizabeth Green:
It is going to take creative collaboration to better equip college students to develop 21st century skills. My guest, Jeff Hittenberger, has worked in higher ed, K-12; in the U.S. and abroad; and as a teacher and as an administrator. His unique perspective helps us think about how to prepare our students in higher ed for tomorrow's challenges and opportunities. Before stars burn out, they inflate to become red giants. The outer hydrogen envelope of these massive stars expand and can swallow almost anything that stands in its path, including smaller planets. Dr. Elizabeth Green, an associate astronomer at the Steward Observatory, was part of the research team that recently discovered two planets, roughly the size of Earth, that remained intact after being swallowed. During the study of the pulsations of subdwarf B star KOI 55 of the Cygnus constellation, researchers discovered that the star is, in fact, a host star that is orbited by planets KOI 55.01 and KOI 55.02. The star’s pulsations were being monitored via NASA’s Kepler telescope. French astronomer Stephane Charpinet of the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie, who led the research team that discovered these planets, predicted stars would pulsate years ago. Observing a star’s pulsations can aid researchers in their quest to understand what goes on inside a star.
