We sit down with the charming Christian de la Torre, famed for his appearance in "The Traitors" TV series on the Peacock Network. The conversation kicks off with light banter, where Christian's name amusingly reminds Pol' of an Italian dish. Christian dives deep into his unexpected entry into the world of entertainment, sharing that a mere Instagram message was his gateway. He candidly speaks of his disbelief upon realizing he was joining a celebrity contestant TV series, filmed in an enchanting castle in Scotland. He reveals his initial obliviousness to the star-studded lineup which included personalities from shows like "The Bachelor" and "Survivor", and even the likes of Olympian Ryan Lochte. Our guest doesn't shy away from personal tales either. Christian reminisces about his deployment in Europe and the more challenging stint in Afghanistan, emphasizing his love for service and the global perspective it provided him. An intriguing comparison arises as he contrasts the very real dangers of Afghanistan with the mental challenges of playing the game on "The Traitors", with deception being key. Further in, the dynamic between Christian and other cast members is explored. He shares both the connections he made and the personalities he clashed with, giving an insider's look into the world of reality TV. His origin story isn't left behind either, as he delves into his passion for rock climbing and his adventures around America in an RV – experiences he frequently documented on Instagram, which eventually caught the attention of casting directors. While the glitz and glam of LA might seem alluring, Christian discusses the stark differences between his home in Wisconsin and the relentless nature of Hollywood. The latter, he remarks, can be unkind, but he credits the genuine circle of friends Patrik and Pol' have for their sustained success in such a demanding environment. It's Armenian coffee reading time and it takes a mystifying turn as he peers into Christian's cup, unraveling his future with startling precision that leaves Christian awe-struck and repeatedly affirming the revelations. We close with the announcement our television series, "Gown and Out InBeverly Hills" on Prime Video, won four Telly Awards. The episode concludes with heartfelt thanks to Christian, noting that he has been metaphorically "Undressed" Pol' and Patrik. This is another Hurrdat Media Production. Hands up if you have seen Netflix's trilogy of horror movies, Fear Street, absolutely pooped yourself AND fallen into new levels of obsession with its star, Kiana Madeira who plays the central protagonist, Deena? I knew I wasn't the only one who was obsessed SO for this very special bonus episode of Make It Reign, I am joined by the new scream queen herself, Kiana! You may have seen Kiana before in the Netflix hit, Trinkets, which follows a group of High Schoolers who end up in a Shoplifters Anonymous Group. But now she is gathering new fans by creeping us out as Deena, a teenager living in the fictional town of Shadyside for the Netflix hit Fear Street based on the books by R.L STINE.The three movies follow a group of high schoolers across three very different periods in 1994, then 1978 and finally, 1666 attempting to not only solve a murder mystery but an ancient curse. Now that's a long to-do list for one gal! One of the things I loved about the three movies was that they centre around the queer love story between Deena and her high school lover, Samantha. Isn't it about time a trilogy of films celebrate a same sex relationship without making it heavily sexualised? HELL YES! As this bonus episode lands after our Make It Reign with Pride series - where we were joined by the likes of Cara Delevingne, Samira Wiley, Courtney Act and Paris Lees - we talk about the power of representing a queer love story. Kiana also talks powerfully about her relationship with religion, how acting affected her body image and how she has learnt to take pride in her mixed heritage and finally embrace her curly hair. I loved talking to Kiana so much as she has so many amazing words about learning to love your self and others - so I hope YOU listen to this episode and give yourselves a little bit of extra love. I am now taking a little break before we drop season four BUT there *may* be a very special surprise guest coming your way in August so make sure you follow me across social media @joshsmithhosts so you are the first to know about it. TRUST ME, you won't want to miss it as I am asked every single day when this person will appear on the podcast. Thank you for taking the time to listen to Make It Reign - it means the world to me. Start your engines because Shane Jenek AKA Courtney Act joins me for the final episode of my mini-series, Make It Reign with Pride! Shane has had many iconic international and historic moments as his drag persona, Courtney Act after they appeared in the first series of Australian Idol in 2003, becoming the first LGBT contestant to openly appear on a reality TV talent show downunder.International fame came knocking after Courtney Act became the runner up in the sixth season of Ru Paul's Drag Race and was later named as the third most powerful drag queen in America by New York Magazine. Courtney went on to win UK's Celebrity Big Brother and in 2019 was the first same-sex pairiing in the Australian version of Dancing With The Stars. Now Shane has launched his own podcast, Building Queertopia on BBC Sounds, which brings together members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community by asking them to envision a perfect ‘queer utopia' where everyone is welcome. But before you RACE off to listen to it, this episode is a corker as we talk about growing up fearing straight men, how drag affected his mental health and how his relationship with body image has changed. SO much of what Shane says in this episode speaks of my own experiences grappling with my identity so I hope you feel heard and seen by the episode! If you have missed this series so far, this mini-series of four episodes features some of the most prominent role models in the LGBTQ+ community - from Cara Delevingne to Samira Wiley - to celebrate Pride Month. It's something that means so much to me because when I was growing up I didn't feel like I truly had any role models - like Shane- and I know that listening to these guests would have helped ‘younger me' and also, ‘adult me' during the multiple times in my life when I have struggled with taking pride in who I am. If you are struggling with your identity at the moment or just need someone to talk to please reach out to the LGBT Foundation, who I mentioned in this episode. Their helplines are always open and confidential and you can find out more at lgbt.foundation. I truly hope this series will help you take pride in your identity no matter how you identify. Author, activist and transgender trailblazer, Paris Lees joins me for the third episode of my mini-series, Make It Reign with Pride, and it is one of the most eye opening conversations I have ever had. Paris Lees is the definition of a LGBTQIA+ trailblazer. She was the first openly trans woman to present a show on Radio 1, to present a show on Channel 4, to appear on Question Time and become a contributing editor for Vogue. She's even had a cameo on Hollyoaks, addressed the Oxford Union in 2014, and in 2016 gave evidence at the home affairs select committee on prostitution laws. But her personal story, which she details in her powerful new memoir 'What It Feels Like For A Girl', tells even more of a story. It is a brutally honest account of her being groomed for sex work as a teenager, the abuse she suffered from her father, being physically bullied at school, and how she came to terms with her identity. In spite of all this adversity and ending up in prison as a teenager after committing a robbery, Paris went to college and went on to graduate at Brighton University with a degree in English language and literature and finds herself where she is today. Hearing Paris Lee's lived experiences in this episode was remarkable as we reflected on chosen family, spectrum grace in the LGBTQIA+ community and how despite experiencing the darkest of times she found her power. This mini-series of four episodes will feature some of the most prominent role models in the LGBTQ+ community from Cara Delevingne to Samira Wiley, to celebrate Pride Month - something that means so much to me! May the lord open! The Emmy award winning The Handmaid's Tale star Samira Wiley joins me for the second episode of Make It Reign with Pride, opening up about being same-sex parents, coming out, and learning to take pride in the intersections of her identity. Samira Wiley has been the definition of a role model since she first starred as Poussey in Orange Is The New Black. Samira went on to win an Emmy Award for her performance as Moira in The Handmaid's Tale which she dedicated to her wife, Lauren. She received the Human Rights Campaign's Visibility Award, and appeared as a couple on the cover of OUT magazine, giving same sex relationships the visibility they deserve! YES! I caught up with Samira just a few months after the birth of their baby daughter, George and she has so many amazing words about raising a new generation to take pride in their identity. Samira herself is now proud to call herself a ‘gay woman' but it hasn't always been the case, as as Samira revealed she was encouraged to enter into a fake ‘relationship' with a gay male friend to protect her career. Now Samira, who credits playing Moira in The Handmaid's Tale with helping her find her voice, sees her relationship as one of her greatest achievements and we love to hear it! I have to confess that I have been obsessed with Samira since I started watching The Handmaid's Tale - which I think is THE best TV show ever made (it's a fact!) - so of course we had a little chat about season four. If you haven't caught up, there are some plot spoilers in the first ten minutes so listen with caution! This mini-series of four episodes will feature some of the most prominent role models in the LGBTQ+ community to celebrate Pride Month - something that means so much to me! We have just watched episode 6 of season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale. It is called 'Vows', and it's written by Dorothy Fortenberry and directed by Richard Shepard: After a shocking reunion with a dear friend, June contemplates the possibility of freedom, and confronts the unfulfilled promises she’s made to herself and to Luke. Hoo boy, Fiona barely makes it through the synopsis without crying, and we're all feeling emotional after this very significant episode. There is so much to unpack, let's get into it. #EyesOnGilead

How can actors master dialects? How important is it for a performer, in an audition or after booking a job, to have specific regional accents in their skill set? Among the many resources available to actors looking to expand their craft, dialect coaching is a growing field of study that most of today’s successful actors have undertaken. This “In the Envelope” episode, featuring experts Barbara Rubin and Jerome Butler, serves as an introduction to the ins and outs of dialect training. Check out more on accents on backstage.com: https://bit.ly/3aqQx0m Barbara Rubin hails from South Africa and works as a dialect coach and theater director in New York City. She’s recently coached actors in the Williamstown Theatre Festival on Audible, is the associate director of Broadway’s “Girl From the North Country,” and has been helping stars (including Julia Garner, Daniel Radcliffe, Samira Wiley, and Jennifer Hudson) incorporate accent work into their craft for years: https://barbararubin.net Jerome Butler is based in New York City, where he trained as an actor at the Juilliard School. He uses dialect coaching to support the artistic processes of working actors in film, TV, and theater (including private clients Jonathan Pryce, Robert Downey Jr., Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ellen Burstyn, and others). Jerome is the founder of Dialect Coaches Corner, a website providing online tools for performers, executives, and fellow educators: https://dialectcoachescorner.com --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years. In our segment segment, we review the new 10-part Hulu miniseries “The Handmaid’s Tale.” We will try to make the conversation fun, because what’s not fun about a 10-hour miniseries about a future in which women don’t have rights, right? And finally, we will end our show with what we’re dorking out about this week, including “The Gong Show” and the Netflix series “13 Reasons Why.” Want your topic on the show? Give us a 5 Star rating and review in iTunes, and we'll talk about whatever you say. Based on the 1985 book by Margaret Atwood, the miniseries stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Samira Wiley and Alexis Bledel from Gilmore Girls, and is set in a dystopian near-future in which women have no rights. Most women are infertile in this future, but there is a handful of women who can still have children. They are forced to have babies for wealthy and powerful couples. I believe one of the characters actually refers to themselves as “two-legged wombs.” Elisabeth Moss is our narrator and main character, Offred, whose husband is murdered and 8-year-old daughter taken away. We see in flashbacks how we got to this future, and it’s almost scarier to me than the future which women are forced to have babies, but it’s more recognizable. It seems familiar. “They can’t do that. This is blow over.” I’ve said those things, or someone has said them to me. It’s chilling. In the third chunk of mega-chapters of The Handmaid's Tale, Kelly & Molly live to put another suitcase in another hall, shame anyone who doesn't like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, recast Steve Buscemi as the Commander, defy any other Handmaid's Tale podcast to cover as much ground as this one, advise people to avoid catching feelings in a dystopia, call out internalized femme-phobia, clock more sardonic wit from Margaret Atwood, compliment each other on being cute, assure everyone that networking doesn't have to be terrible, and hope that the Hulu adaptation starring Elisabeth Moss & Samira Wiley is really good. All this, PLUS Kelly scares the crap out of Molly, and Molly has no empathy for Scorpios (including Kelly, because Kelly scared her so badly). Welcome to the House of Crouse. SPOILER ALERT! This week we have a show that reveals many secrets, so if you haven't watched the fourth season of Orange is the New Black, please be careful and listen for our special Spoiler Alert Horn during the Samira Wiley interview. She talks about playing the prison drama's much loved character Poussey Washington. Joining her is Danieils, a directing collective comprised of Daniel Scheinert and Dan Kwan. They talk about making Swiss Army Man, a movie about a farting corpse, and how it was a deeply personal experience for them. Stop by the House of Crouse, sit a spell. You'll like it.
Actress Dionne Audain talks about her role as Poussey's Mom in Netflix's Orange Is The New Black (Episode 0301) and her many other projects. Having a BA in English (Literature & Rhetoric emphasis) and a Master's of Public Administration (MPA) from the number one program in the nation - The Maxwell School at Syracuse University, Ms. Audain's former life included consulting, budgeting and managing change in large government and private organizations averaging 70 hours a week. After realizing that her drive and talent also had artistic inclinations, Ms. Audain set her sights on acting. Having "performed" since the age of two in pageants, dance troupes, story telling competitions, original poems and of course plays - she was a natural and force waiting to be unleashed. During the last four years, under the tutelage of great teachers, coaches and training programs, she has accomplished an impressive resume with local, regional and national credits in theater, film, television, voice-overs and print.
Up next is our third podcast of our series "Let Me Ascertain You: LGBTQ All Out!" dedicated to sexuality and gender. For this episode, we've got another interview from a staffer at the Rainbow Heights Club in Brooklyn, an advocacy program for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender emotional recovery and wellness. You can learn more about them at rainbowheights.org. Samira Wiley performs Danee live in New York City at the Barrow Street Theater. Then, our next performance comes from an interview we did a couple years ago as part of our research for writer Neal Bell's play, SHADOW OF HIMSELF. Actors Matt Maher, Brian Sgambati and Maria Dizzia drove down to rural Pennsylvania to visit Harold and Bob in their home that has number of cages upstairs, locked cells downstairs and something of a small prison camp outside. At the time they were all empty. Matt Maher plays Harold and Brad Heberlee plays Bob. Since we started this LGBTQ series, we did a concert of the show TIMES SQUARE by Jill Sobule & Robin Eaton and Jim Lewis. It's a show about two girls who fall in love and discover themselves. To close out the podcast, we share a song for Nicky, one of the two girls at the center of the story. Nicky's a streetwise butch girl and in this song "Cigarette Burn" she's trying out a new song onstage at the Pussycat Palace in the heart of sleazy Times Square. It's sung here by the extraordinary Jill Sobule. Interviews for this podcast were conducted by Donnetta Lavinia Grays and Matt Maher.
