Shoot us a Text.Episode #1025: We cover Nissan's plan to hold vehicle prices through early June and increase U.S. production in response to tariffs. Plus we examine Tesla's strategic repositioning of the Cybertruck and how cybercriminals are creating a realistic-looking phishing campaign using Google's own tools.Show Notes with links:Nissan is staying steady on pricing through June 2 and looking to its underused U.S. factories to soften the blow of auto tariffs. The strategy focuses on affordability and domestic production leverage.Nissan has a 3-month supply of tariff-free vehicles and won't raise prices yet.The company plans to boost output at Smyrna, TN and Canton, MS plants, all of which operated at half their capacity in 2024.Rogue production will jump by 54% over the next year, adding 60,000 units, while price cuts of $1K on 2025 Rogue and Pathfinder aim to drive demand.Nissan is incentivizing retailers with its April and May dealer volume bonus program, which pays extra cash to stores that meet sales targets.“We count all the cars [toward the sales target], but we only pay on the U.S.-made cars because we want to give [them a] tailwind,” said Nissan Americas Chair Christian MeunierTesla is quietly shifting the Cybertruck's identity from status symbol to workhorse after early hype faded, trucks stockpiled, and political ties turned divisive. The new approach aims to resonate with a more traditional truck-buying audience.Cybertruck deliveries remain under 50,000; demand has sharply declined with sales dropping 50% in Q1.Tesla updated the product page with rugged, utilitarian imagery, aligning with Ford's F-150 ads.Sales teams report it's harder to sell the truck to actual truck buyers; its novelty isn't enough."They need to advertise durability. It needs to be used and abused, and all of the capabilities that make it a work truck need to be on full display," said Edmunds' Ivan Drury.Cybercriminals are exploiting Google's own “Sites” app to run a phishing campaign that convincingly mimics law enforcement subpoenas and bypasses email authentication safeguards.Emails appear from “no-reply@google.com” and claim law enforcement access to your account.Attackers use Google Sites to create convincing portals that evade DKIM checks.DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) authentication is passed since the emails originate from Google's own infrastructure.Google has acknowledged the issue and is deploying mitigations while encouraging 2FA and passkeys.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Shoot us a Text. The end of the year is finally here, and so we're looking back, covering the top 10 best-selling vehicles of 2024. Plus, we talk about a unique $0 down and $0 monthly payment Fiat lease as well as reflect on some of our most memorable moments.Show Notes with links:Hybrid electric-gas cars had a banner year in 2024, achieving record sales. With a shift in buyer demographics, these vehicles bridged the gap for consumers seeking efficiency and practicality without fully committing to electric vehicles.A shift from early adopters to budget-conscious shoppers drove hybrid demand. Many buyers appreciated the lower costs and simpler integration into daily life compared to EVs.Here are 2024's top 10 best-selling vehicles. 10. Chevy Equinox. 9. Honda Civic 8. Nissan Rogue 7. Toyota Camry 6. Toyota Corolla 5. Tesla Model Y (only true EV on the list) 4. Chevy Silverado 1500 3. Honda CR-V 2. Toyota RAV4 1. Ford F-150 (America's best-selling vehicle for 47 years, with 20% of buyers opting for the hybrid version)The top three all have hybrid options that did especially well this year, and about half of all RAV4 and CR-V sales are hybrids, according to Edmunds.“Hybrids this year became an extremely easy default decision for someone who doesn't want to go full electric but wants basically 70% or 80% of benefits” said Ivan Drury of Edmunds.Who says driving electric has to break the bank? A Fiat dealership in Colorado pulled off the seemingly impossible: a lease deal on the 2024 Fiat 500e that truly costs $0 down and $0 a month. The deal covers a 27-month term, 10,000 miles per year, with just $1,300 in state taxes and fees due upfront.Larry H. Miller Chrysler-Dodge-Ram-Fiat Denver moved over 60 cars in three days, using over $15,000 in federal and state incentives, plus factory discounts, to enable this unheard-of lease offer.Colorado's state incentives decrease in 2025, and federal EV credits are under scrutiny, meaning deals like this are less likely in the future.David Gluckman of Car & Driver leased one of the cars, and commented on the dealership's challenges with such a unique agreement: “I was warned, apologetically, that there was a chance I might have to re-sign some of the paperwork because the dealer's computer system didn't know how to handle a lease with no payment… A funny formality: They still had to run a credit check to confirm my ability to (not) pay.”As we close out the year, we look back at some of our most memorable moments. Shoot us a Text.Day 2 with Cirillo and we figured some marketing wrap up was still in store. It's been known that when you leave the lot of a car dealership with a new car, the value of the car depreciates immediately. However, in today's car market the tables have turned in the favor of used car owners. According to the U.S. Department of Labor statistics, used car prices are up nearly 40% from last year. New cars are only up by 12%. Ivan Drury, Edmunds' senior manager of insights, said we have got to this place because of a depletion of inventory and microchips, and COVID-19 protocols on assembly lines. "We are seeing that virtually every single used car and we're talking about one year old, three year old, nine year old cars are up in value," Drury said. "We're just at this point where people can't get what they want and even if you do order a new car today, you're going to have to wait and it might not even be fully equipped in the manner in which your accustomed to because it might be missing a chip or two for certain options." Drury also said in today's car market, it's better to buy a car than to lease one, as lease payments are expensive currently and comparable to the cost of buying a car. Here are some tips that he gave on negotiating: Shop your existing vehicle to as many outlets as possible Shop around for the best interest rate Be confident Do you research to find out the market rate Research addons for your desired vehicle Look over your purchase contract to learn important common auto terms Compare your trade in value with different outlets Separate your wants from your needs Drury said it's important to find out what the deals are available at dealerships, the published and unpublished ones. "Ask the dealer what are the incentive programs available or go to the automakers website because they publish these incentives," Drury said. "...They adjust these incentive programs every single for sales day of the month. So, be aware. And if you're looking at holidays, this is the one where people think you actually have to buy on that holiday, that's really not the case it's the same incentives throughout the entire month."Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Host Stuart Richardson interviews long time housing advocate/activist Ivan Drury, we speak about the large scale gentrification project going on in the Burnaby Metrotown area where thousands of low income tenants face reno-viction as their affordable homes get bulldozed for high priced condo developments. How this story is unfolding in big cities all across North American and how investors only see homes as another commodity to flip leaving renters with limited options, many becoming homeless or living in precarious housing arrangements. We speak about how all levels of government and political stripes have abandoned this community preferring to favor developer interests. How this problem manifests in a Neo-Liberal capitalist market place and how only more radical view of a people first based community must take form.
