Have an episode suggestion? Text us! The recovery world loves to talk about healing, but what about the people most impacted by the chaos? In this brutally honest episode, Matt and Paige pull back the curtain on what treatment centers, therapists, and traditional recovery programs often miss: the spouse's experience. Why are partners immediately labeled codependent? Why is their anger pathologized while the addict's pain is protected? Why are they expected to forgive before they've even been allowed to grieve?Matt and Paige dive into their own story, breaking down how betrayal trauma affects the brain, what real accountability looks like, and how programs often rush to protect the addicted person at the expense of their partner's healing. Drawing from personal experience and insights from experts like Dr. Jake Porter, they explore:How trauma shows up in the body and brainWhy forgiveness without accountability is gaslightingThe myth of “you just need to understand addiction”Why codependency is not a diagnosis, and not always accurateWhat couples actually need to rebuild trust and safetyThe missing ingredient in most treatment programs: the spouse or partnerThis episode is for anyone who's ever been told they were "part of the problem" simply for being hurt. Jake Porter, the father of the late Kim Porter, has publicly condemned Sean "Diddy" Combs after footage surfaced showing the music mogul attacking Casandra "Cassie" Ventura. The video, which captures a 2016 altercation where Combs is seen grabbing, shoving, and kicking Cassie, has sparked outrage and led to serious repercussions for the 54-year-old star. “You can say I was disgusted with the video, and I wouldn't treat my enemy like that,” Jake Porter, 78, told Rolling Stone on Friday, June 7. "It was despicable. I couldn't believe it. I was in Vietnam, and I wouldn't do that to my enemy.” Jake Porter, whose daughter Kim dated Combs on and off from 1994 until 2007, said he never witnessed Combs physically abusing Kim but admitted the video made him question their relationship. “It made me wonder,” he remarked. Kim Porter, a former model who passed away from lobar pneumonia in 2018, shared three children with Combs: son Christian Combs, born in 1998, and twin daughters D'Lila Star Combs and Jessie James Combs, born in 2006. Despite their tumultuous relationship, Jake noted that Kim had genuine love for Combs, though she could not live with him. “I think he was a very jealous person,” Jake said. “They both loved each other. Kim's love was legitimate. Puffy's love, I don't know what he calls love, you know what I mean? I really don't think he has any idea what love is.” The recently released hotel surveillance footage of the attack has not only shocked Jake Porter but also led to public outcry. In response to the video's circulation, Combs issued an apology on Instagram, expressing his own disgust at his actions. However, the damage to his reputation has been significant. Earlier this month, Howard University rescinded the honorary degree it had awarded to Combs in 2014. In a statement on its website, the university announced that its Board of Trustees "voted unanimously today to accept the return by Mr. Sean Combs of the honorary degree conferred upon him in 2014." The decision, the statement continued, "revokes all honors and privileges associated with the degree." "Mr. Combs' behavior as captured in a recently released video is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University's core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution's highest honor," the statement added. "The University is unwavering in its opposition to all acts of interpersonal violence." Jake Porter shared that the video has changed his perspective on Combs entirely. “I didn't know he could stoop that low,” he said. “I imagine it surprised a lot of people. I wouldn't even do a dog like that. My heart goes out to Cassie.” As a father and grandfather, Jake Porter's primary concern now lies with the well-being of his grandchildren. “My concern is the children,” he told Rolling Stone. The impact of such violent behavior, especially in the context of Combs' public persona and their shared history, weighs heavily on him. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? We Discuss: What's a quick understanding of sobriety versus recovery? What perspectives have you had or heard from your clients about a husband who is not in a place of recovery? Last episode we generally defined what it means to work out our recovery and what it looks like in the days immediately following discovery. In this episode, let's discuss what recovery work entails when we are further down the healing path?   “Grief is a luxury for the brain that knows it's safe,” Dr. Jake Porter. We Discuss: What is the work she encounters after she's found stability and is moving into grief and mourning? Does the “work of recovery” ever end? What hope can we leave our listeners? Verses Mentioned: James 1:2, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds..."   Romans 5:1-5, "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us." Pam Blizzard from RecoveredPeace.com Lyschel Burket from HopeRedefined.org Bonny Burns from StrongWives.com We are so excited that, today, Dr. Jake Porter is joining our candid conversation. Jake is the founder of Daring Ventures and is both an APSATS certified clinical partner specialist and a CSAT (among other things). Our discussion with Jake, today, revolves around what recovery looks like. We all know that recovery is the goal for a marriage trying to heal from problematic sexual behavior. However, recovery is an elusive entity. I get asked all the time, “What does recovery look like? How will I know he's in recovery?” I asked those same questions and the answer I got, “You'll know it when you see it,” felt very unsatisfying. While Pam, Lyschel, and I have definite ideas about recovery, we decided to Jake in to enrich this conversation. We Will be Discussing: What do you define as recovery? (her recovery, his recovery – he may be doing internal stuff but he's not doing anything relationally – and the relationship's recovery)  What is “managing his recovery?” Is this good or bad?  How do I help my husband in his recovery? (Or Do I help my husband with his recovery?) Resources mentioned in this show: Free Couples-Centered Recovery Webinar, Scroll to the middle of the page and sign-in.
