John Wright is an author and past racer who started driving in 1970 and after a self-described, undistinguished record, and running out of racing funds, switched from racing to writing about the drivers, mechanics, and builders in the sport. Initially, John's stories of Canadian drivers and cars were published in the Canadian publication ‘Old Autos' in Bothwell, Ontario followed by the California-based magazine ‘Victory Lane'. From there, other publications published interviews John was doing at vintage events and things took off from there. John goes to vintage events around the country, including Mosport, Road America, Watkins Glen and the Laguna Seca tracks. He and his racing friends meet and talk about how fast we were… or not. Today he is here to share his newest book titled Fast Faster Fastest: The Bill Sadler Story from Dalton Watson Fine Books.

Welcome to our motorsports podcast where we discuss F1, IndyCar, IMSA, NASCAR, our own racing adventures, and some other adventures!Indycar had its doubleheader at Iowa Speedway and it was a good heat test for the new hybrids as temperatures were high 80s to low 90s for both races. The repave changed the racing which the drivers had to navigate and pit stops had to be perfect as they played a more crucial role.NASCAR was at Pocono where Ryan Blaney took the win. WEC returned to Interlagos for the first time in 10 years and what a show they put on! Fantastic battles throughout the race! Great return to a great facility for these cars. Hope they keep this track around in future seasons. IMSA had another round at Mosport with the LMP2s being the top class. Both GT classes were there as well so just the GTPs that took a round off.Coming up this weekend: F1 is at Hungary, NASCAR returns to Indy for the Brickyard 400, and Indycar is on the streets of Toronto.
Gossip time! Why did Ross steal that Ferrari from Chip Ganassi? Just who dropped that tire on Jeff's toe at Daytona and became his sworn enemy for life? Which aging F1 driver did Sam give a wedgie to in the pits at Lime Rock? Listen and find out! (Warning: This episode may not actually contain the above information.) This episode's working title was "The Dumbest Things We've Seen in Racing." When we sat down at the mic, it got way more interesting—a discussion about high-pressure environments, room for error, and how "dumb" doesn't always mean what you think. This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. This format is called “Ross and Jeff Teach Sam a Thing." Related Trivia: Jeff was at Mosport this weekend with the AWA IMSA Corvettes. Ross was coaching LMP2 remotely from his home in Seattle. Sam was at Road America for the WeatherTech vintage races. Only one of them spilled a Siebken's Root Beer on his shoes and doesn't regret it. We tell racing stories and leave out the boring parts. Ross Bentley is a former IndyCar driver and a world-renowned performance coach and author. Jeff Braun is a champion race engineer. Sam Smith is an award-winning journalist and a former executive editor of Road & Track magazine. Together, we explore the emotion at the heart of the machine. We don't love racing for the nuts and bolts—we love it for what it asks of the bag of meat at the wheel. New episodes every Tuesday.

Andy won Le Mans with Jaguar in 1988 and is a three time winner of the Daytona 24hrs and a two time winner of the Sebring 12hrs which makes him one of only a handful of drivers to win Sports cars triple crown. Andy talks about cycling 30 miles each way to Silverstone with his cheese and pickle sandwiches to watch the cars racing at Silverstone as a young Boy and making the step up to racing himself and winning the British Formula three championship and the Macau GP. An incident with Jan Lammers in the Macau GP bizarrely led to a friendship with Jan who was also racing for Jaguar in sports cars, this opened the door for Andy to test for Jaguar and become one of their factory drivers and he repaid their faith by winning Le Mans for them in 1988. Andy has raced for Dyson racing in the ALMS and has been a huge part of their success along with Chris Dyson, James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger, Andy tells us about his horrifying accident while testing at Mosport where the car flipped several times in an accident that lasted well over 200 metres. He also has a passion for electric vehicles which surprised us and he talks about where he see's the future going for the automotive industry. Andy is currently the test driver for Bugatti and in 2019 he set the worlds first speed over 300mph in a hypercar at 304.77 mph!!! in the Bugatti Chiron. If you watch the run on YouTube it looks pretty calm and easy but Andy tells us what it was really like! Andy has a great way of telling a story and we loved listening to him chat about his career and we could have easily doubled the length of the podcast!
The legendary Heatwave Festival happened 40 years ago this weekend: August 23 1980. 100,000 people turned up for the Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, The B-52s, Rockpile, Teenage Head & more (but not the no-show headliners, The Clash). It was not only my first fest and one of the best single-day bills I would ever see, it was the centerpiece of an insane long weekend adventure that saw me stranded and broke in the middle of nowhere on Sunday morning after two days of partying and mass-imbibing.For Episode 10 and on the occasion of the festival’s 40th anniversary, I not only discuss the series of brilliant, energetic, & breathtaking sets performed by some of the key artists of the day at their peak, including the Talking Heads’ first-ever performance as an expanded unit and the public debut of the material released two months later as “Remain In Light,” but also relate how I eventually made it back to my home three hours away. There is also the ramp-up parking lot party the night before and the morning’s beer-for-breakfast cotillion of debauchery before noon even hits or the music starts.Sit back, listen, and join me on one of the best and wildest concert/festival weekends I ever had.And when are we ever going to get to hear the original master tapes? A Heatwave box set, please.Read the original four-part blog entry written in 2010 on the mylifeinconcert.com website.NEXT PODCASTS (Coming in September): Episodes 11 A&B will look back at the 20 Acts from the Past I Wish I’d Seen Episode 12 (no.004) This Is the Modern World: The Jam with The Dwight Twilley Band, Rex Danforth Theatre, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Tuesday April 10, 1979 (Get a sneak preview by reading the original 2011 blog entry here.) mylifeinconcert.com
50 years ago, on 14 June 1970, the first Shadow racing car made its race début in the opening round of the fabled Can-Am Challenge, at Canada’s Mosport circuit. A miniature car, literally knee-high and with tiny tyres, this startling newcomer went fast enough for George Follmer to qualify it sixth but its race ended when the engine overheated. Now, the first history of Shadow racing cars, by Pete Lyons, has just been released by Evro. SHADOW: THE MAGNIFICENT MACHINES OF A MAN OF MYSTERY could not have a more appropriate author. Pete was there that day at Mosport, witnessed Shadow evolve to become Can-Am champions by 1974, attended the team’s Formula 1 début at Kyalami in 1973, reported on its Grand Prix exploits for four seasons thereafter — and besides all that in latter years he conducted extensive interviews with Shadowman Don Nichols, the Man of Mystery himself, in preparation for this book. From all this top-quality raw material, together with 600 images, a rather special volume has emerged and Evro is very proud to be its publisher.
Just in time for the upcoming NASA Great Lakes event at GingerMan, Chief Instructor Eric Meyer was kind enough to join us and discuss his past and current association with racing and instructing, as well as the genealogy and philosophy that has led to the current NASA Great Lakes HPDE program curriculum. It is by far the best of the HPDE instruction we have attended across the country and we think highly enough of it that we regularly attend their HPDE events that are sometimes well over a 10 hour drive each way from us. Eric also is another great counterexample of the false age-old adage about "those who can do, and those who can't teach" as he has won a ton of racing trophies in Grand Am, World Challenge, and Touring cars, among others. Our Dominating with Dawson segment goes over the practice of left foot braking, its potential advantages, and how to try to begin to incorporate it into your driving repertoire. We hope you enjoy the episode and we would love to see you at the upcoming NASA Great Lakes event in GingerMan! Best regards, Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team Highlights from the episode include: 1) How he originally started racing at a track and how quickly and deeply the hook was set. 2) Some of the issues that he encountered when first entering the sport and how they shaped his interest in helping others 3) Where he sees opportunities to continue to improve our sport and how he can give back to the racing community. 4) How NASA Great Lakes history has led to their focus on the educational path has led to the current HPDE structure. It is a great balance of driving on the track with the classroom and download education. 5) Eric turns the table on Bill to answer Bill's own question. It was tremendously fun and allowed Bill to brag about the NASA Great Lakes HPDE. 6) A discussion on the priorities of teaching driving skills and situational awareness as foundational aspects of the NASA Great Lakes HPDE. 7) We believe that we may have uncovered Eric is secretly competing in sewing. We may be wrong. 8) Eric also goes into some of the philosophy of what his team is looking for to progress through the levels as well as some of the criteria in transitioning from level one to level two, as an example. 9) We discuss several of the drills that you will do within the various HPDE levels, some of which we have lovingly stolen and use on our track day practice sessions. 10) We even go into some of the educational techniques former podcast guest John Santiago uses in the HPDE 1 classroom and track sessions. Vicki and Jen will be getting the full experience next weekend. Bill is jealous and will attend as many of their classroom sessions as his HPDE schedule permits. 11) How has the COVID related challenges and rules impacted the event and the HPDE sessions specifically, especially the traditional right seat style in car coaching and the various group classroom sessions. It sounds like things may be even better than the prior structure. 12) One of the surprises we may see at GingerMan may have been revealed. 13) Eric says that we need to add Mosport to the track bucket list and Bill is already pondering how to possibly get to the Chin event at Barber in November. 14) Tips and tricks to the upcoming GingerMan event, both on track and off. Jen is thrilled with the runoff areas GingerMan affords to assist with learning with less potential detrimental impact. 15) We have an informal agreement to meet at the local microbrewery. Now we just need to have time and energy. 16) A Pinto makes a podcast appearance again, much to Vicki and Jen's pleasure. 17) We aren't absolutely sure if Eric really liked our Fast and Furious questions but he really faked it well if he didn't. 18) Eric has a weakness, and apparently it is Mazda rotary engines. 19) If you are ever at a bar and need to know how many kegs you can fit into a 1964 Oldsmobile Cutlass, this is the podcast for you! 20) Bill forgets to thank Eric for an earlier long conversation they had related to Bill's goal of becoming a qualified instructor as soon as possible.
