Over the years, I have spoken with many clients who really don't understand the process behind design. I think there are many beginner and mid-level designers that don't fully understand process, means and methods. If a client wants their projects completed quickly, they can always find a designer who will do it for them. It's their replacement who has to pick up the pieces. I can hear many of you nodding in agreement as I say this. It's the journey, like that of a runner. You don't decide to run a marathon, buy a pair of shoes and run it. There is a process. A very long and challenging process. The same is true when trying to become the best at what you do in any endeavor. Just like design. Designer Resources Pacific Sales Kitchen and Home. Where excellence meets expertise. Monogram - It's the details that define Monogram ThermaSol - Redefining the modern shower experience. Without steam, it's just a bathroom. Design Hardware - A stunning and vast collection of jewelry for the home! - Where service meets excellence TimberTech - Real wood beauty without the upkeep Today, you are going to hear from Holly Hollenbeck. Holly and I discussed the parallels between long-distance running and project management. Holly, an experienced ultra-distance runner, shared her lessons learned from participating in challenging races, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning, determination, and experience. She also highlighted how these experiences have influenced her approach to project strategy and risk management. Holly shares some of the challenges she faced in her design and client management roles due to the Covid-19 pandemic and economic fluctuations. She emphasized the importance of clear communication with clients, setting expectations upfront, and being flexible to pivot when necessary. We also discussed the differences in real estate design and mentality between the United States, Europe, and Asia, with a focus on the concept of the ancestral home and the shift towards renovating existing homes rather than moving due to high housing costs. There is an overwhelming need to adapt to constantly changing market conditions and client needs. Holly shares her experience of having her kitchen design featured on the cover of California Home and Design in 2007, which she attributed to serendipity and connections with friends. Holly and I discussed the pitfalls of designing homes based on current trends, emphasizing the importance of creating cohesive, functional spaces rather than focusing on individual, trendy elements. They highlighted the risk of a design becoming outdated and the need to balance trendy elements with timeless pieces. Holly shared her approach to navigating clients' desires for trendy features by ensuring these elements are used in unique and personalized ways. And you are going to hear all about it, right after this. Thank you Holly, loved our chat. Keep on truckin. Thank you to my incredible partner/ sponsors; ThermaSol, Design Hardware, pacific Sales, Monogram and TimberTech for your support for the show and the industry as a whole. And although you're going to feel like you're crazy, you're not crazy, you're angry and you should be." Dave - "I think the take home for me, at least one of the many, is that avoiding that self-blame, it's that all of a sudden that inward right and anger, anger turns this inward, and then it's some of this, you know, maybe outward at first, but then it's this inward of what? What did I do? Am I not skinny enough? Why? Why did they do kind of searching for the why and then blaming themselves for this? I love that message." Liz - "I've never heard the great advice around self-harm regarding using an ice cube, rubber band, rubber band, I've heard, but Ice Cube I haven't. I really love both of those, actually. So, thank you for that. Because as I get that, I get that you're just trying to use access to physical pain to release the emotional pain. Makes perfect sense, actually, but harmful. We're just continuing the on the harm, so we have to stop, and I really appreciate you bringing that to our attention." Brain Hurt Scale = 5/10. Following on from part 1, we explore a paper that studied thousands of online retailers between 2020 and 2022. The findings from this study have massive implications on the digital marketing industry, decision-makers, executives and investors. They analyzed 100's of billions of digital marketing expenditure and looked at how this affected customer acquisition and growth. Finding that not only have costs increased on average but firms who targeted certain customers and used particular channels realized the greatest drops in yield. So why are so few in the industry talking about something so momentous? There are a few reasons for that which we discuss near the end.

On this episode of Navigating Forward, Lisa Thee, Managing Director of Data & AI at Launch Consulting, welcomes Rupal Hollenbeck, President of Check Point Software for a discussion about AI and cybersecurity. They delve into both the challenges and opportunities that generative AI brings to cybersecurity, including that bad actors can now use tools like ChatGPT to compose more convincing phishing emails and even to create malware. On the flip side, they also talk about how AI can also help companies supercharge their own cybersecurity efforts. They also touch on how important it is to make sure that employees are learning about generative AI both now and on an ongoing basis as technologies evolve. Additionally, they discuss how organizations need to communicate about the security and privacy implications of generative AI use so that well-intentioned employees aren't accidentally sharing sensitive data. Intro Tina Hollenbeck, The Homeschool Resource Roadmap's creator, is a veteran homeschooling mom (i.e., educational entrepreneur) who passionately advocates for the merits of home education. She launched the research project that birthed the Common Core Project database and later created The Homeschool Resource Roadmap to serve the homeschool community she loves. Through this initiative, she seeks to provide useful information and encouragement for those called to raise and educate their own children, so that they will feel confident that they are equipped for the task. In addition to educating her own children and curating The Roadmap and its affiliated resources, Tina has also written for a number of homeschool- and parenting-related venues. In 2015, she co-authored a booklet, Celebrating Children's 12 Genius Qualities, and in 2021, her first solo book, 8 Great Smarts for Homeschoolers, was published by Moody Press. Top three takeaways Use "curriculum" and other learning tools as a TOOL, never your master. There are literally thousands of curricular options from which to choose and The Roadmap can show you what's available. The key to successful homeschooling is truly knowing how God has wired each of your children and responding appropriately. The Homeschool Resource Roadmap includes lists of those who offer support for kids with the whole gamut of "special needs." Call to Action The Homeschool Roadmap Official Website What is Next! Jakob Hollenbeck moved from Eugene to Portland over this past summer. While he had witnessed homelessness in Eugene, and even wrote an opinion piece about it for his university, he was still surprised by what he saw in Portland. Over time, he became friends with some of his neighbors experiencing homelessness. They were ultimately forced to move after the city posted a notice for them to vacate the area. Hollenbeck says his neighbors deserved to stay. He joins us with more on his experiences and how he views Portland's policies toward homelessness.
