Hello, it’s time for another episode, so let’s jump right in. DP connects with media journalist Jade Jackson. Her journey started at the age of 9 when the school librarian, selected her to do morning announcements, an honor normally reserved for the sixth-grade students. She was hailed by students and teachers as being funny and entertaining. She didn’t like the news however and like most children, her age pondered why her family chose to watch them instead of morning cartoons. It would take the CNN document, Black In America, to make her take interest with the idea of telling stories. During her high school years, she was a member of the yearbook, newspaper and television committees which launched her into the world of broadcasting. She attended Jarvis Christian College, founded by her Great-grandfather, and has made a promise to establish a journalism degree program there. Her drive to allow others the same opportunity given to her speaks to the passion she has for her art. Fraser is Chairman and CEO of FraserNet, Inc; a company he founded almost 30 years ago with the vision to lead a global networking movement that brings together diverse human resources to increase opportunities for people of African descent. He is considered by many to be a new voice for African Americans and one of the foremost authorities on economic development, networking and building effective relationships. While George’s accomplishments are significant, his beginnings were very humble. He was born in Brooklyn, NY into a family of 11 children (8 boys and 3 girls). When George’s mom became mentally ill, George’s dad, a cab driver, could not care for 11 children so George was orphaned at 3 and spent 14 years in foster homes. Growing up on the streets of New York he had little hope and no expectations. Although his guidance counselor suggested he drop out of high school, George graduated from high school with a vocational diploma in woodworking because the school system did not consider him college material. Thank God George felt differently…for several years, he mopped floors on the midnight shift at LaGuardia Airport, while he paid his way through college. Later, in 1996, he graduated from the prestigious Dartmouth College; Minority Business Executive Program. In 1999, he was awarded the Honorary Doctorate Degree of Humane Letters from Jarvis Christian College. See more info at www.frasernet.com

Many yearn for the prestige and sense of accomplishment of having a published book. The world of publishing has changed, however. We no longer have to send out dozens of query letters and wait anxiously for a response that often never comes. Well-known books such as A Time to Kill by John Grisham and What Color Is Your Parachute? by Richard Nelson Bolles started as self published books before they became national bestsellers. There is also the story of Amanda Hocking who set out to make an extra few hundred dollars self publishing, but made $2.5 million instead. The number of self-published books in the United States annually has grown 287 percent since 2006, according to statistics. We now have the power in our own hands, but what do we do with it?
