Eric Stein, head of investments and chief investment officer for fixed income at Voya Investment Management, says that the "sequencing of policies" is impacting the market now, noting that if the Trump Administration had done supply-side reforms and de-regulation first, it would boost the market, but instead the first moves have been tariffs, which has made the market outlook tougher. Still, he's expecting a modestly positive year, buoyed in part by the market's "self-correcting mechanism" that will react to tariff policy and impact how and how long those policies stay in place. Veteran technical analyst Martin Pring of Pring Research and the Intermarket Review says that the primary trend he's seeing in the market remains bullish, and the signs that we are nearing a market top are balanced by indicators showing there's more room to run. David Callaway, founder of Callaway Climate Insights, discusses how energy stocks could be set up for a fall; they have boomed as an AI-adjacent play because artificial intelligence requires high levels of power, but got hammered when the market was disappointed in the results at companies like Nvidia. Plus Andrew Graham of Jackson Square Capital talks stock investing in the Market Call.

“I changed the department from HR to People and culture. The term HR is a construct of an economist in the 1800s, talking about people as commodities, just like paper and pens. That's not what this is about anymore”, says Denise. “The world has changed. In order to unlock true potential of a company and its performance, you have to focus on the people, unlocking their true potential as whole individuals.”On the podcast this week, Denise shares her journey from investment banking through Silicon Valley in to insurance. “The consistent theme across my career journey is I'm a risk taker, which is interesting, given I'm in the risk business now. I always looked for additional challenge, something different, something that I could fix, launch or do differently.I left investment banking in the dotcom era and moved to Silicon Valley area and worked for 2 different start-ups. I had the experience of taking them up, expanding and then dismantling. Then through my network, I got a call from Marsh Mclennan and I took the leap. I was sucked into the insurance world. Once you're in, you're really never going to get out.”Following a Head of HR role with Voya and launching her own executive coaching business, Denise was approached by an executive search firm to meet with Fortitude Re. The business operates in the Life and Annuity and Property & Casualty business in the US, Bermuda and in Japan. She joined the team in 2022. Denise gives insight in to her role as Chief People Officer as well as overseeing marketing, communications, branding and CSR. She emphasizes the desire to create a human-centric culture and the benefits of being a smaller reinsurance company. “Human-centricity and putting people as our priority and at the center of what we do, really helps us make decisions as a business in a way that enables our people to not only bring their whole selves to work. But to focus on developing themselves across the spectrum of things that make them people. That unlocks such tremendous potential and their ability to perform at a level that you couldn't really expect otherwise.Human-centric leadership is not something that comes naturally to people who have grown up professionally over the last 20 years. But if you think about authenticity and communications and transparency, you think about empathy and understanding where people are, being adaptive and being able to flex things, it starts to make sense in terms of why that works.Because we're a smaller company, we get to focus more on development. We get to experiment.” Denise highlights the importance of finding opportunities for the team to unplug from the complexities of large reinsurance deals. “If you think about investment banking as an industry, it's very much a burn and churn type of reality. That's not a sustainable model. We're really focused on trying to create balance for our people. The work is hard but we make sure we find opportunities for people to unplug from work.”Denise talks about closing the whole business for a week in August and Fortitude Re's Ignite annual learning allowance program. “They can use it to develop themselves in any way, personally or professionally. We have people using it to go skydiving, learn a language or to get certifications that will help them professionally. It's about developing the whole person.”Highlighting the advice, she'd give to insurance leaders coming for interview, Denise says, “Be confident yet be humble. Our CEO calls it a sneaker culture. We run really fast, we're super aggressive but we like to be normal people. Being very confident in your capabilities and being able to convey your subject matter but being a humble human who can work in that flat hierarchical structure is important.”As advice to her fellow insurance industry people leaders, Denise says the ‘how' is more...

With a demand for accuracy but an appetite for innovating with new methodologies, finding the right balance between specialization and generalization is often seen as the key to success in delivering quality consumer insights. But what if we told you that there's more to the story? We're pulling back the curtain to hear from one of the wizards orchestrating the delivery of insights into the world of finance. In this episode, Priscilla McKinney, CEO of Little Bird Marketing, welcomes Kerry Sette, VP, and Head of Consumer Insights and Research at Voya Financial, a Fortune 500 financial services company. Together, they dive into the challenges and strategies behind conducting market research in a rapidly changing industry. The wide range of areas Voya supports includes enterprise brand, media, advertising, corporate social responsibility, employee experience, product development, marketing, advertising, brand health tracking, digital product work, and more. The unique challenge lies in serving both B2B and B2C markets, requiring a deep understanding of various customer constituencies. To keep driving success, one important key to team success is to have “diversity of thought,” Kerry states. She underscores that this single fact truly “makes for a stronger team.” She finds it invaluable, in fact, as the digital transformation of how consumers access financial products continues to change and evolve at a rapid pace. Kerry shares her experience about striking the right balance between a need for both specialists and generalists on an insights team and more “behind the scenes” wisdom. Find out what it takes to build a strong team that can advocate successfully for the consumer in all circumstances. Greetings from the world's greatest city where we kicked off money manager meeting week with significant discussions with the CIO, the taxable fixed income team, and the levered loan group at Voya, and this afternoon met with the real estate team, private equity group, and head real estate folks at Blackstone. It won't be this many meetings every day this week (it better not be), but it was a great way to start off the week. My summary of the whole week will be prepared at the end of the week for public consumption. Futures opened last night up +100 points and stayed positive throughout the night even as Japanese markets struggled. By bedtime, we were about +150 in overnight futures and at the crack of dawn this morning (now on eastern time zone), futures were pointing to a +300-point open. The market opened up +500 points and got as high as +675 points, and stayed very level throughout the day. The Dow closed up +550 points (+1.86%) with the S&P 500 up +2.65% and the Nasdaq up a massive +3.43%. UK bonds rallied violently this morning as yields collapsed, no doubt the key correlative event to the U.S. stock market rally overnight. The 30-year and 20-year dropped by a stunning 40 basis points, and each point on the yield curve from three years up to ten years was down by almost the same. Anyone who bought British bonds last week made about two years' worth of return in about 24 hours. The ten-year bond yield closed today at 4.01%, up less than a basis point on the day I am not sure what to think about the measurement of bond returns in 1721 when churning butter was the most profound technological advancement of the decade, but I do know this: 2022 is going in the history books for global sovereign bond returns Links mentioned in this episode: DividendCafe.com TheBahnsenGroup.com
