HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersSince first making their way to Australia in 2009 Orange County hardcore outfit Stick To Your Guns have almost made it their mission statement to return back as often as possible.Their music for some reason resonates well with Australian music lovers, and despite a five-year gap between visits, this time the band has vowed to make up for lost time when they hit our shores from January 24 for a run of shows. The tour will see Stick To Your Guns celebrate one of their most popular albums, Diamond, with the gang from California offering up the whole album live by way of thanks for sustained support. With the tour just over a week away, vocalist Jesse Barnett took some time out to speak to HEAVY about the tour and what coming to this country means to the band.We start by asking if he is all packed and ready to go."No," he laughed. "I pack light. I'm a light packer, so I'm not stressed about the packing. The travel stresses me out. I'm not a good plane guy. Flying scares me, so that 15 hour flight is a brutal one."We bring up the album Diamond and ask why the band chose that particular album to perform."We knew we always wanted to do a ten-year thing for that album specifically," he began. "I think in terms of our career or whatever term you wanna use, that was a pretty path-changing album that we put out. A lot of things started happening for us after that, and I think people started connecting with the band in a different way than they were before, maybe. So we wanted to make sure that we were able to celebrate that. I say it in every interview, but I want to reiterate the point that Stick To Your Guns never set out to do anything profound. We just wanted to speak our truths and do our thing as a band. It's not the band that creates a meaningful album. It's the receiver, the listener, who gives the albums any sort of meaning whatsoever. I just feel grateful that we have people from all over the world engage with this album."In the full interview Jesse talks more about the album Diamond, his memories of making it, what made it so special, the musical direction taken on that album and if it was planned, if he thinks the songs have stood the test of time, bringing SeeYouSpaceCowboy as supports and why, how Stick To Your Guns have changed since their first visit to Australia in 2009 and now, what we can expect from their shows, what they expect from us and more.

Here's a bold statement. Dancers, while extremely great at moving their bodies, sometimes don't actually know how to do it optimally. Getting injured on and off the stage is not uncommon for dancers. Oftentimes these aches, pains and sometimes broken or torn tissues are directly a result of improper, overused movements. Our passionate and incredible guest today is Jesse Barnett, a New York City-based dancer, Pilates instructor, and Personal Trainer. He talks about how to prevent injuries in the first place and how cross training is crucial for every performing artist. Jesse busts some myths by highlighting how stretching is not the only important part of training and how repeating the same asymmetrical movements can lead to overuse injuries. Jesse grew up studying dance in his hometown of Yorktown, Virginia, and moved to NYC to attend Marymount Manhattan College where he graduated with a BFA in Dance. After graduating, he completed his Pilates certification through The Kane School, a contemporary Pilates program including movement anatomy, biomechanics, touch techniques, and special populations training. He then completed his personal training certification through the NSCA as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). Jesse has also completed training programs in pre/post natal fitness and TRX Suspension Training and has experience working alongside physical therapists in a post-rehab facility.Connect with him:@jessetbarnett

Crank it up. Way up. The hardcore times of Stick To Your Guns lives on with their highly-anticipated 7th studio album “Spectre.” Frontman Jesse Barnett is our humble guest as he dives into the influences and songwriting that have shaped this monster of a record into arguably the band's best work to date. It's also been the longest time frame in between album releases (2017), and Jesse and his crew are more than ready to unleash this newest chapter of STYG. He has come a long way since 2003, and now looking back on the band's 20 years of existence, it's hard to believe that much time has passed by – at the same time Jesse has learned much about himself and the growth he has taken in over the years. We also ask him about the work and dedication he put into his community with All Power Books, which is an independent bookstore Jesse opened, including his record label titled Other People Records. It's been a busy life, but a thankful one, and it's all translated into “Spectre,” which is full of all the signatures that make Stick To Your Guns stand out in not just the hardcore realm, but heavy metal in general. There are challenges in keeping things going after 2 decades, and that serves as an example to that drive which Jesse has put into this fan favorite quintet hailing from the OC. Did we mention to crank it up? Because Jesse also gets on the Hot Seat in this episode, putting his knowledge to the test in recalling his own lyrics. Tune in now and be sure to buy and stream Stick To Your Guns' “Spectre,” out now worldwide via Pure Noise Records. This is something I firmly believe, especially for those of us in ministry.Today I'm excited to introduce you to Jesse Barnett, our newest member of the team and an Atlanta-based craftsman at heart who brings stories to life through writing, speaking, coaching, and teaching. Above all, his heart is to use his spiritual gifts and talents to serve those who have a message to share, and to help them multiply the reach, effectiveness, and power of that message. As Communications Coach with 95Network, he helps pastors get more mileage from their message by learning how to utilize the digital space to expand their church community. In this conversation, Jesse shares how to "take something you've already created and put a little Miracle-Gro on it," why learning how to update how we communicate leads to deeper relationships, the opportunities available for every pastor to repurpose the message they've already worked on, and, most importantly, how this all relates to the Gospel. We had the pleasure of interviewing Jesse Barnett of Trade Wind over Zoom video! Trade Wind are a band with one very clear directive: anything goes. Formed in 2013 as a means of exploring sounds and styles outside of their main projects, the group—made up of Jesse Barnett (guitar/vocals), Tom Williams (guitar), Andrew McEnaney (drums), and Randy LeBoeuf (bass)—have prioritized unfettered creativity above all else, channeling their four distinct musical personalities into an exciting catalog full of contrasts and contradictions. Now with the release of their third full-length, The Day We Got What We Deserved, Trade Wind are pushing that core idea further than ever before with their most unexpected sonic turn yet. The members of Trade Wind each have extensive resumes that stem from punk and hardcore, and expand into all corners of music. Barnett fronts Stick To Your Guns, Ways Away, and his solo project Wish You Were Here; Williams plays in Stray From The Path; McEnaney is in Structures, END, and has performed live with disparate artists like Charlotte Lawrence, Tate McRae, and Kai; and LeBoeuf is an accomplished producer/engineer in his own right, working on recordings for bands like The Acacia Strain, Kublai Khan, and Gideon. But whereas those endeavors often involve the organic guidelines that develop in established musical projects, Trade Wind was formed specifically to throw any strictures out the window. The Day We Got What We Deserved is sure to surprise even longtime fans who have come to expect the unexpected from Trade Wind. Each of their releases build upon what came before—from the driving post-hardcore of 2014’s Suffer Just To Believe and 2016’s You Make Everything Disappear, to the widescreen indie rock of 2019’s Certain Freedoms—but The Day We Got What We Deserved dives headfirst into sophisticated rhythms and stunning atmospherics that were previously only hinted at. A genre-blending amalgam of trip hop beats, lush soundscapes, and Barnett’s songwriterly melodies, the album began with the sort of long-distance collaboration that many bands turned to in 2020. Unlike previous Trade Wind releases the process began with McEnaney and LeBoeuf taking the lead. The Day We Got What We Deserved collects these flashes of perspective and soundtracks them with the pulsating rhythms and dreamy instrumentals of McEnaney, LeBoeuf, and Williams, resulting in an album that feels otherworldly yet full of clarity and confidence. “If you look at our discography, you never get the same record twice,” Williams says. “Each album is its own standalone experience.” It’s rare for a band to be as daring as Trade Wind while still maintaining such a distinct identity, but as McEnaney puts it, “everyone in this band brings their own unique role and strength to the table, which is why I feel like any music we make together will always sound like us.” We want to hear from you! This week, we're thrilled to be joined by a veteran of AAA radio promotion, Jesse Barnett! We talked about a wide array of topics, from how he started in the music biz at A&M Records during the heyday of Sheryl Crow, Blues Traveler & The Gin Blossoms, to how he started his own company in 2005. We of course delved into what the "Emerson Mafia" is all about, and how after graduating college, he actually was a TV ad copywriter briefly for a well-known firm in L.A. It was cool to reminisce about how we both started in the AAA format around the same time in the 90s when artists like Fiona Apple & Alanis Morissette & Semisonic were taking over the world, and here we are in 2020, when all 3 of them have made big comebacks that Jesse has been involved in on the radio promo teams. He's worked closely with independent artists like Mike Doughty & Ingrid Michaelson, pop-crossover success stories like Michael Franti & Passenger...and, oh yeah, he got to work the surprise album from the singular sensation known as Taylor Swift. He has a whole slew of great things in store for 2021, only some of which can he divulge here now. I also admire Jesse for taking up photography as a hobby within the past decade, especially since he got so good so quickly! We even talked about cool record stores, cool Bay Area multi-band mini-festivals in the 80s, and what it's like raising a theater kid (I've got a 6-year-old who is well on his way)...so yeah, we covered a LOT of ground! Be advised, Jesse comes from the Attaway school of podcast guesting, so there are some naughty words here & there. But it's only rock'n'roll, right?

He's been a trim carpenter, a salesman, and a college instructor, but the truth of the matter is that Jesse Barnett is a writer. Devoted husband to Becca and proud father to two amazing kids, Jesse joins Learning to Write so he can share how he discovered his gift for writing and honed that gift into a marketable skill. From his work with John Maxwell, Michael Hyatt, and others, Jesse always brings his unique ability to inspire, encourage, entertain, instruct and uplift to every project because he understands that there's no telling what the reader will need. His passion is to entertain and help people find their way to live a better life, and that passion is reflected in his various projects with his clients as well as the Toolbox he's developed on his personal website. Jesse's advice for writers is straightforward: "Some of the best writing is instinctual--it comes from deep within, so the sooner writers learn to trust themselves, the better their writing will become." You'll definitely want to hear him flesh out some of his other writing principles, and if you've ever entertained the idea of writing as a career, you'll want to hear his story and his insights on how to make that dream come true. Playing my songs is the way I cope with life. Won't keep my voice down. Know the words I speak are the thoughts I think out loud." I walked right in the mouth of it and never looked back again. The only thing that remains through the loss and the pain. As for me there was no other choice. I’m married to the noise."

How Radio Promotion Is Done Right With Jesse Barnett

Being a radio host, I'm plugged into different parts of this industry. I'm connected to radio stations, artists, managers, radio promoters, and listeners alike. I see things from the perspective of a radio station manager, music director, program host, and curator when it comes to music submissions. I do also see things from the perspective of the artists. It might seem like these are two opposing viewpoints, but they're not.Not if you look at it the right way.Jesse BarnettJesse Barnett (Right Arm Resource) is one who sees the harmony between the musicians and the media platforms who showcase their work. It's a team effort, where both sides win when they work together. Look folks, there's no I in team. We know that. It's cliched. But how often do you, musicians, look at your music promotions to radio as something that offers a benefit to the station you reach out to other than them "getting to play" your music? Radio and musicians win when there's a relationship connection in place. That's why public, community, indie and college radio continue to be powerhouses in the modern media-rich world. Relationships matter. Make that a focus and you'll see bigger and better wins in your music promotion. This podcast episode is about just that: relationships. Jesse is the best in the business of radio promotion because he puts relationships first. He has worked with and represented some big names in indie music including Damien Rice, They Might Be Giants, Cage The Elephant, and others. And he works with smaller indie labels and artists too, quite successfully I might add.We talk about the power of networking and relationship building a lot in this episode because it's the real key to achieving anything that lasts. Trust me. Or better yet trust Jesse. We're both proof of this. Radio is a conduit between people who share interest, love, and stories driven by music. When radio works best is when it builds communities together of people who share these areas. That's not the same thing as it being a platform that just plays music and has listeners. That's boring commercial radio, which you're not listening to.One other thing that is mentioned a few times in this podcast episode is The DIY Musician's Radio Handbook, which illustrates the exact things we talk about in a How-To format. Jesse has read it and shares his thoughts on it. It's easy for me to tell you that you need this book. However, you decide how much you want to succeed. If you want to win, and you want long term wins, go grab the book here. After you listen to this, if you get just 1 thing out of it (which I know is an understatement because you'll get way more than that), do your part in the growth farming process and plant a seed with 3 of your music friends (i.e. share the episode). Cultivate it with me here, and let me know what 1 thing you got the most from in this conversation. We'll talk soon!

Radio promotion is the best way for musicians to grow their audience, when you do it right. I talk about how to do it right on my blog and in my book. This time, I wanted to bring on someone who DOES it right, and has built a solid business doing so. What does that mean? Relationship building and networking with stations. Jesse Barnett shares tips, tools, and methods to do radio promotion and networking the right way, so you can do it on your own.

The weekend is knocking, why don't you go let it in? Before all that happens at least you have a new episode of Edgeland to chase away the blues. Today on the show Bill tells a story of mischief and friendship, but mainly it's a story about bad decisions. In the interview portion of the show Bill talks with Jesse Barnett of Stick To Your Guns and Trade Wind about OC edge, dropping out of high school, and the hardcore mentality that prevails these days. In the non edge column Bill talks with Damien Moyal of Culture, Morning Again, As Friends Rust, and so many more about his days as a teenager, the Florida hardcore sound, and what draws people into hardcore in general. A solid episode that will start off your weekend right.
