Amber Tacy says she doesn't have direct ties to the professional cheerleading world (other than a handful of auditions for the Brooklynettes and Jets teams), but she did work as a professional dancer in the commercial space on TV shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Films like How to Be Single and Ads including Anastasia cosmetics and Ruby Tuesdays. She has technical training in ballet, modern, and jazz from Marymount Manhattan College, where she got her degrees in "Dance Science" (exercise science for dancers) and Psychology. She found that she was a great performer, but no matter how much she worked on her technique and no matter how many classes and styles she took, she just couldn't keep up with the other dancers in NYC. When she got a part-time job working at a fitness studio in NYC, she saw the science of training come to life. She learned about lifting, recovery, and nutrition and after a few months had certifications in all those areas. More importantly, she applied her dance-science book knowledge with physical skills in the gym and FINALLY started seeing improvement in her dancing... her career... and her confidence! In 2020, like many dancers, her dance career took a pause so she quickly shifted her focus to supporting dancers in her community and thus, “Dancers Who Lift” was born. It's an online fitness and wellness community for professional and recreational performers who want to feel hotter, stronger, and book their dream jobs. Her programs have served over 2500 performers, she's personally coached 300+ performers, and her team is still actively coaching dancers globally. It's her personal mission to get a barbell in the hands of every artist so they can take up more space and shine their brightest. I think this is an amazing concept and I'm all for it. I am so glad there's someone in this space who is talking about this. Enjoy this episode with Amber and get to lifting! Chris Pinnella's musical journey is woven with experiences across diverse landscapes. His career took flight at 16 when he showcased his prodigious talent with Alphonse Stephenson and the Orchestra of St. Peter, a debut that set the stage for his future success. This early triumph was just the beginning of his musical odyssey, eventually leading him to earn a degree from Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. Post-college, his career trajectory led him to diverse platforms. He delved into off-Broadway and regional theater. Notably, he landed the role of Simeon in the musical "Simeon's Gift," a production co-authored by the legendary Julie Andrews and her daughter Emma Walton-Hamilton. His involvement in this project gave him a unique opportunity to collaborate closely with industry icons. Additionally, he toured with the famed Trans Siberian Orchestra. Over the last several years, Pinnella has led large-scale celebrated tribute shows featuring the music of Frank Sinatra and a tribute show on the music of Billy Joel.
We're back with my favorite type of podcast episode, a birth story! We've been able to create an amazing community of students here at PYC. I see many of these students twice, sometimes three time a week. I get to know them, hear their stories, listen to their concerns and I am able to share with them what I've learned. Today we have Katie Lohiya, sharing her birth story. She has been part of our PYC community since she was 13 weeks pregnant. She attended class 2-3 times per week, even when she wasn't in NYC she would join online, which I absolutely adored. I was able get to know Katie well. We have a similar background, we are both dancers and performers and I resonated with her. When I asked her to share her birth story she said “absolutely.” Katie tells a beautiful birth story. I am deeply honored that as she was explaining her story, her time at PYC was very much interwoven into her birth. I am very appreciative that the time we spent together helped her throughout her labor experience. On today's episode of Yoga | Birth | Babies, we've invited Katie Lohiya, one of our community members. She is originally from Chicago but has lived in NYC for 14 years. Katie graduated from Marymount Manhattan College with a BFA in Dance. Before having her daughter, she danced professionally for a contemporary company (Lydia Johnson Dance) and has taught extensively throughout NYC. She's been married to her husband Vaibhav for 10 years and they live on the Upper West Side. Katie recommends that parents trust their instincts when it comes to pregnancy, birth and parenthood. She points out that there is so much information to sift through, that it helps to tap into their own intuition. Whether it's finding the right provider, advocating for themselves in labor, or getting a second opinion from a pediatrician, she believes that if parents trust their inner voice they will ultimately make the best decision for their family. Katie's story is heartfelt and candid. I'm really excited for you to hear her story, it's very special! Michael was born in the wagon of a traveling show... At least that's what it says on his website. He is a graduate of Marymount Manhattan College and has been directing and producing in any and all mediums. Some recent projects are Broadway's Caroline, or Change revival (co-producer), off-Broadway's long running A Musical About Star Wars (director), and the decadent new soap opera, Mélange, starring Morgan Fairchild (editor). During the pandemic he produced and directed several high profile streaming benefits to raise money for various neighborhood institutions in need of some help. Save West Bank Cafe was a 10 hour Christmas Day telethon, followed by Save Birdland, The Musical of Musicals (the York Theatre) and a benefit for The Stonewall Inn to name few. Ultimately, we raised 1.5M and were honored that so many stars collaborated on these projects with him from President Clinton (both of them) to Sting, Whoopi Goldberg, Pete Townshend, Sean Penn nee Ciccone, Patti LuPone, André De Shields, Ana Gastyre, Demi Lovato and so many more.

My first show was Annie Warbucks where I played the littlest orphan Molly. My voice education started in middle school with private voice lessons to enhance my musical theatre love. This blossomed into a Bachelor of Music in Music Theatre from Baldwin Wallace College-Conservatory of Music. I continued to specialize in Commercial Contemporary Music with the Voice Teacher Training Certification from New York Vocal Coaching while performing 8 shows a week in School of Rock on Broadway. Continuing the quest for knowledge, I hold a Certificate of Distinction in Vocal Pedagogy from Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Recently, I've attended levels I, II, and III Somatic Voicework™, The LoVetri Method. These programs gave me tools for vocal injury prevention and functional cross-training. As a member of the NATS, PAVA, MTEA, and The Lessac Institute, I've mentored with Bel Canto Can Belto's Mary Saunders-Barton, Complete Vocal Fitness' Claudia Friedlander, and Soul Ingredient's creator Trineice Robinson-Martin. My continuing education include masterclasses with Matt Edwards, Amanda Flynn, and The Singing Athlete's Andrew Byrne. But a voice without acting is just…boring! During repertoire work, I add in Laban techniques and Viewpoints to help singers create a fully realized piece. Outside of the Private Voice studio, I am an adjunct Voice Instructor at Marymount Manhattan College and University of Wisconsin- Parkside in their Musical Theatre departments. I also teach masterclasses for various NYC Broadway based organization's including Broadway Workshop, Broadway Classroom, and all over the country with local theatre programs. Grad student Helen Lyle is determined to find out why the residents of the Cabrini-Green housing development in Chicago are petrified by the Candyman, a ghost who allegedly appears if you say his name in the mirror five times. After jokingly summoning him with Trevor, her philandering professor husband, Helen heads to Cabrini-Green with her pal Bernadette to interview residents and track down the truth. Instead she discovers what might just be the Candyman's lair, an abandoned apartment laid out strangely like her own. Soon enough, she's standing face to face with the man himself. And he hasn't brought a bag of Skittles. This guy's got a hook for a hand, bees on his knees, and a desire to possess Helen, who may or may not resemble the woman he once loved. After her encounter with the Man, Helen awakes to find herself on the floor of an bathroom covered in blood, her crazy nightmare just beginning. On this episode, Scott has the chance to interview Carla Stickler who has "defied gravity" and expectations throughout her varied careers as a vocalist, Broadway performer and web/software engineer. And she discusses the many educational paths she took to land some of her dream gigs, including Wicked on Broadway and her current work as a web engineer at Spotify. Carla Stickler is perhaps best known for her news-making return to the role of Elphaba in Wicked in 2022, after a 7-year hiatus away from the show. That return single-handedly, helped keep Wicked open in a Covid-weary industry. Her story and advocacy ideas about Artists in STEM have been featured in Marie Claire, NPR, Huffington Post, Vulture, Inside Editon, Nightline - among others. As an actor, Carla toured the nation with Mamma Mia (covering Sophie) and toured Asia playing Liesel in the The Sound of Music. She has also performed her own cabaret as a guest entertainer onboard Norwegian and Disney Cruise Lines. Carla has a BFA in acting from NYU-Tisch and masters degree in theater education from NYU-Steinhardt, and she was a voice teacher in New York City on the faculties of Marymount Manhattan College and Molloy College/CAP21. And she also attended The Flatiron School in New York City, a software engineering bootcamp, that helped her as she career transitioned from the entertainment industry to the tech sector. Carla mentors high school students through their college application journey through iMentor in Chicago as well as artists looking to make a career change into tech through Artists Who Code. Carla is passionate about reframing the narrative of the “starving artist” and encourages young artists to take agency over their careers by developing skills that can provide them with financial stability alongside their artistic journey. To find out more about Carla Stickler: Website: www.carlastickler.comTikTok: @sticklercarlaLinked-In: www.linkedin.com/in/carlastickler/Podcast References:The Portfolio Life by Christina WallaceBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Mentorship continues to loom large in stories about women's work and personal lives-- sometimes for the better, but often for the worse. If mentors can nurture and support, they can also bitterly disappoint, reproducing the hardships they once suffered and reinforcing the same old hierarchies and inequities. The stories gathered in Feminists Reclaim Mentorship (SUNY Press, 2023) challenge our fundamental assumptions about mentorship, illuminating the obstacles that make it difficult to connect meaningfully and ethically while reimagining the possibilities for reciprocity. Does mentorship require sameness? Might we find more inventive, collaborative ways to bond than the traditional top-down model of mentoring? Drawing on their experiences in academia, creative writing, publishing, and journalism, the volume's editors, Nancy K. Miller and Tahneer Oksman, and their twenty-six contributors collectively strive for relationships that acknowledge differences alongside the importance of common bonds. Feminists Reclaim Mentorship will resonate across workspaces and arrives at a moment when the need to form feminist connections within and between generations couldn't feel more urgent. Host Annie Berke sits down with Drs. Miller and Oksman, as well as contributor Dr. Elizabeth Alsop, to discuss the origins of this anthology, the biggest myths behind mentorship, and what mentors and mentees owe to one another. Nancy K. Miller is Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Here's a bold statement. Dancers, while extremely great at moving their bodies, sometimes don't actually know how to do it optimally. Getting injured on and off the stage is not uncommon for dancers. Oftentimes these aches, pains and sometimes broken or torn tissues are directly a result of improper, overused movements. Our passionate and incredible guest today is Jesse Barnett, a New York City-based dancer, Pilates instructor, and Personal Trainer. He talks about how to prevent injuries in the first place and how cross training is crucial for every performing artist. Jesse busts some myths by highlighting how stretching is not the only important part of training and how repeating the same asymmetrical movements can lead to overuse injuries. Jesse grew up studying dance in his hometown of Yorktown, Virginia, and moved to NYC to attend Marymount Manhattan College where he graduated with a BFA in Dance. After graduating, he completed his Pilates certification through The Kane School, a contemporary Pilates program including movement anatomy, biomechanics, touch techniques, and special populations training. He then completed his personal training certification through the NSCA as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). Jesse has also completed training programs in pre/post natal fitness and TRX Suspension Training and has experience working alongside physical therapists in a post-rehab facility.Connect with him:@jessetbarnett

Studying the Song - Audition & Music Preparation for Musical Theatre
A disarmingly honest conversation about career, loving yourself (ie your voice), and taking on the identity of "artist." In this episode, you'll hear Sasha talk about finding success in unexpected opportunities like workshops, readings, and cabaret shows. She also shares her honest realizations about fighting her “type” and coming to terms with her voice (which she now loves, btw). Sasha received her MFA in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University and her BFA in Musical Theatre with emphasis in Acting and Vocal Repertoire from The Boston Conservatory. Some of her favorite NY credits include: Jerry Springer the Opera (Carnegie Hall); Colette Collage (The York Theatre) I and Albert (York), The Grand Tour (York); and readings/workshops such as Carrie: the Musical (with Sutton Foster & Marin Mazzie, dir. Stafford Arima), Mister Hollands Opus: the Musical (with BD Wong), Dig Lenny Bruce (with Mario Cantone & Mary Testa, dir. Jerry Dixon), TV: ABC's What Would You Do? (“Ugly Americans in Paris”), Food Fighters (judge), and one-time game show winner on $100,000 Pyramid. Commercials: Jenny Craig nat'l (w/Mariah Carey). Sasha wrote her thesis on “The Art and the Venue of Cabaret” and has written, produced, and performed her own cabarets in NYC, San Diego, and LA. Sasha has been a faculty member in the Musical Theatre programs at Pace University, Marymount Manhattan College, San Diego State University, and The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA).. If you've ever questioned your own success or wondered if this was what you were “supposed” to be doing, then you'll want to hear this conversation. In this episode of the HET Podcast, our co-host, Dr. Mahlon Stewart interviews Dr. Iris Platt. Dr. Platt helped coordinate and instruct an elective course on health equity and social justice. Join us for a discussion on how graduate students can be involved in their own education and how it influences their early careers as physical therapists. Biography: Dr. Iris Platt is a physical therapist based in New York City. She completed her doctorate at Columbia University, where she also earned her Master's Degree. Her research background includes the neuroscience of movement in cognitive disorders as well as the significance of pelvic floor health. Before pursuing her research and clinical practice, Iris trained in Ballet, Modern, Tap, and Jazz at Boston Youth Moves under the direction of Jim Viera and Jeannette Neil. An avid dancer, she competed in Latin and Ballroom DanceSport before moving to New York City to further pursue dance at Marymount Manhattan College. She has performed works by renowned artists including Barak Marshall, Ohad Naharin, and Crystal Pite.
On the cusp of her big break as Paula Pokrifki—the Debra Winger role—in the National Tour of “An Officer and a Gentleman, The Musical,” 24-year-old New York theater actress Mia Massaro received a devastating diagnosis. But the show must go on—and it did. Mia Massaro is a New York City based actor but grew up in Vineland, New Jersey (basically the South) with her parents Andrea and Dominic Massaro and two older brothers, Andrew and Patrick. She studied musical theatre performance at Marymount Manhattan College and graduated in 2019. Since then she's been killing the survival job game while also getting her first two equity jobs in March of 2020, and we all know what happened there. She started doing theatre with The Gabriel Project which is a nonprofit organization based out of South Jersey that would produce and put on musicals to raise money for children in Africa. That money would go towards bringing those children over to the United States to have life saving surgeries, something she now knows a little something about.
