SERMON | Matthew 5:21-37 | GLIMPSES OF THE KIN-DOM: 6. "But I Say..." by Rev. Joseph Sanford at Sellersburg United Methodist Church in Sellersburg, Indiana. Jesus is inviting his disciples into a new way of living… A new Kin-dom… with a new rule… Not a list, tablet, or scroll, but WAY of Life. The early church called our faith “The Way” because it was JUST THAT! A NEW WAY. Jesus holds up the rule they know and follow, but then takes it deeper. Don't just NOT MURDER, but don't be angry with your sister or brother. You'll be liable to judgment. This isn't a cosmic judgment by God. It is, but not like we think. If I hold my hand over this flame, what happens? I get burned, right? Not because the fire is judging me, but because that's how things work. Flames burn. Too much heat harms. So…if I want to avoid being burned, I avoid letting things get too hot…I don't hold my hand over flames. I must know how things work…and then I must live by the way things are. God's commandments and rules are like heat or gravity…they are how things work. If I let myself boil w/ anger toward someone…but then I stop short of killing them, I may be following the LAW and breaking no commandments or rules, but something terrible is happening anyway, right? The Commandments and rules of Scripture are meant to guide us toward how to live as true human beings… as we were created to live and act and be and experience life and relationships. If I kill people, that doesn't lead to a fruitful life, but to a life of the Valley of Hinnom. Well…so does living angry at people. Does it produce fruit to get mad at people in your life? Does it produce fullness of life to hold contempt against other human beings? Or does that kind of life lead to a smoldering fire in our souls that actually destroys our hearts a bit at a time. Like holding our hand over a flame, holding anger leads to damage to our hearts and minds and relationships and life. So, Jesus says…don't be angry. He holds up reconciliation and making friends above worship!! Because worship cannot bring you peace when you harbor anger and resentment. You cannot be right with God if you are not right with other human beings. Jesus talks about all of our relationships through the lens of life vs. death… thriving vs. destruction. These new expressions of the Kin-dom do more than show us a better path. —they reveal Jesus as the blueprint of humanity. Jesus lived by the New Way. The Sermon on the Mount isn't just good advice, but GOOD NEWS. Jesus lived this way for us to see. Jesus lived into the way of being fully human. He opens up our eyes to see it in and through him. If we follow him, we can discover it too! We can catch glimpses of the Kin-dom. When Jesus was mocked by religious leaders and his contemporaries and family, he didn't respond in kind. When Jesus was challenged by the “rule follower” he told parables and stories: some of them were funny and meant to disarm the tension, but they all forced his antagonizers to think differently. When Jesus was struck, he took the pain and made no attempt to retaliate. When they put a cross on his back, he carried it out of the city to the place of his execution. When they nailed him to the cross, he prayed for them and asked God to forgive them all. The Sermon on the Mount isn't just about us… It's about Jesus Christ… It's about the Kin-dom which Jesus ushered in. What would our world look like if the people of the Church started living into this new deeper way where relationships were valued over everything else…even WORSHIP!! We'd see the Salt & Light at work in and through us. The world around us would look at us… and catch glimpses of the Kin-dom.

QUOTES FOR REFLECTION “A Christian should be an Alleluia from head to foot.” “He was before His own flesh; He created His own mother. He chose her in whom He should be conceived, He created her of whom He should be created. Why do you marvel? It is God of whom I am speaking to you: The Word was God.” ~St. Augustine (354-430), North African theologian and leader on Jesus Christ “It is significant that God does not present us with salvation in the form of an abstract truth, or a precise definition or a catchy slogan, but as story... Story is an invitation to participate, first through our imagination and then, if we will, by faith, with our total lives in response to God…. When we submit our lives to what we read in scripture, we find that we are not being led to see God in our stories, but our stories in God's. God is the larger context and plot in which our stories find themselves.” ~Eugene Peterson (1932-2018), pastor, scholar and author “Christ was sent not to mend wounded people or wake sleepy people or advise confused people or inspire bored people or spur on lazy people or educate ignorant people, but to raise dead people.” ~Dane C. Ortlund in his book Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers “By opening our lives to God in Christ, we become new creatures. This experience, which Jesus spoke of as the new birth, is essential if we are to be transformed nonconformists. . . Only through an inner spiritual transformation do we gain the strength to fight vigorously the evils of the world in a humble and loving spirit.” ~Martin Luther King, Jr (1929-1968), slain civil rights leader “This world is a great sculptor's shop. We are the statues and there is a rumour going round the shop that some of us are some day going to come to life.” ~C.S. Lewis, Oxford scholar in Mere Christianity (1952) “When we are powerless to do a thing, it is a great joy that we can come and step inside the ability of Jesus.” ~Corrie Ten Boom (1892-1983), writer, survivor of a Nazi concentration camp SERMON PASSAGE John 2 23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man. John 3 1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.' 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. 10 “You are Israel's teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. John 1 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Great Bible Truths with Dr David Petts

Talk 6 1 Corinthians 3:9-23    God’s Holy Temple – the Church   In the last two talks we have been looking at wisdom and contrasting the wisdom of man with the vastly superior wisdom of God.   Paul’s discussion of wisdom is set in the context of the problems of division in the church in Corinth and is probably included there because one of the causes of division may well have been an immature boasting in human wisdom.   The theme of division continues in chapter 3 and (back in Talk 3) we have already considered the first 9 verses in seeking to identify some of the things that were causing that division.   Today we turn our attention to the rest of the chapter where we see that the church is God’s holy temple and that to cause division within it is a very serious matter indeed.   We’ll begin in vv 16-17 and then come back to verse 9 and work through the passage systematically.   The church is God’s holy temple 16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?   Don’t you know that....   Paul uses this 10 times in this letter - 3:16, 5:6, 6:2, 3, 9, 15, 16, 19, 9:13, 24.  Given their own emphasis on wisdom and knowledge this may be more than a rhetorical device.  Rather, Can it be that you who boast in your knowledge do not know that.....?             you yourselves are   Note the plural.  Elsewhere the individual is described as the temple of the Spirit (6:19), but here it is the gathered church that is referred to (cf. Ephesians 2:22).              temple   The Greek is naos here, rather than hieron.  This suggests that the inner shrine is thought of rather than the whole temple.  The church is the innermost sanctuary of God - the Holy of Holies   Causing division in the church has serious consequences   17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.   To destroy the local church is to ‘touch the ark’ (cf. 2 Samuel 6:6-8).  Their divisions were pulling the church apart. Barrett sees the activities of the Judaisers here.  In holding their view they destroy the basis of their own salvation.   We are God’s fellow workers and he uses us in building his church 9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.   Cf Mark 16:20. But here supernatural confirmation of the word is not in mind. Our being co-labourers with God is one aspect of our identification with Christ.  Compare 2 Corinthians 6:1 and the verses that precede it.   We must therefore be careful how we build 10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds.   expert builder   The Greek architekton does not mean architect but rather suggest one who superintends the work of building, a master of works             I  laid a foundation      i.e. Christ (v 11)             be careful   Who should be careful? Probably those who were currently leading the church. The foundation is all important but in itself it’s not enough.  It’s what’s built on top that matters.  Christ is the only possible foundation for the Christian church (v11) but even with a right foundation it’s possible to build a useless superstructure.   The church must be built on no other foundation than Jesus Christ 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.   It is vitally important that we build with the right materials 12 If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 his work will be shown for what it is,   Paul list 6 building materials, 3 durable, 3 perishable.  Gold, silver and precious stones occur in the OT to describe the building materials of the Temple.  Paul may well see the Church as the fulfilment of OT prophecies about the Temple.   The Day is coming when our work will be shown for what it is 13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work.   Paul is clearly talking about a judgment for Christians, but it is not the man who is to be judged, but his work.  Neither is it his sin that is to be judged, for that was judged at the cross.  But the Day is coming when every Christian’s work will be shown for what it is by the fire of divine judgment   If what we have built survives, we will be rewarded 14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. 15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.   The person who has built with durable materials such as gold, silver etc (i.e. has built with the things of eternal value) will receive a reward (literally, wage).  Nowhere are we told what the reward is, but in 4:5 Paul talks about receiving praise from God (cf. Matthew 25:21, 23 ‘Well done, good and faithful servant’).   he will suffer loss   The man who has lived for the perishable things of this world will receive no wage.  His work will be lost - but not his soul. See below.                 one escaping through the flames   The Day is marked by conflagration.  The workman, caught in the flames of his own badly constructed house runs the risk of being engulfed.  In fact he will escape, but as one who dashes through the flames.  The important thing is to understand that this is a metaphor, pure and simple.  Could this be a reference to the Judaisers who built with bad materials on the foundation of Christ?   Summary so far:   The church is God’s holy temple Causing division in the church has serious consequences We are God’s fellow workers and he uses us in building his church We must therefore be careful how we build The church must be built on no other foundation than Jesus Christ It is vitally important that we build with the right materials The Day is coming when our work will be shown for what it is If what we have built survives, we will be rewarded   But finally -   Boasting in human wisdom is totally inappropriate in light of the amazing privileges we have as being part of God’s church 18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness" 20 and again, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile." 21 So then, no more boasting about men! All things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future - all are yours, 23 and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.   In verses 18-20 Paul returns to the theme of wisdom again. In v 21 he says Don’t glory in men. All things are yours. Don’t limit yourself to one teacher. They’re all yours.  The whole ministry is for the whole church.       v18    Do not deceive yourselves   Paul warns that if you think you’re wise, you’re deceiving yourself.  In their pursuit of human wisdom and knowledge the Corinthians were actually deluded because they were ignoring the wisdom of God   v19    the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight   Note that Paul has completely reversed the order of 1:18-25 where God’s wisdom is foolishness to the world   v21    all things are yours....   The Corinthians had been saying I belong to Paul.  Now Paul says I belong to you!   Verses 22-23 could be summarised as follows:   Why are you quarrelling when everything is yours?  All the ministries of the church are yours. The world is yours! Life is yours. Death is yours (the gateway to heaven). You have everything in Christ.  You belong to him and he belongs to God. In the light of that, how petty our differences are!

Developing Intimacy With God 12. Jesus’ Teaching About Prayer (Part 2) “9 ‘This, then, is how you should pray: ‘“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.” Amen.” (Matthew 6:9-13) Last week in our Saturday series, we started looking at Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer in what we call the Lord’s Prayer and we continue that this week. Forgiveness: Forgiveness, of course, is a major part of the Christian faith and Christianity. Both in the way that God forgives me when I come to Him in penitence and repentance, but also in the way that I forgive others and themselves! Asking for forgiveness, particularly from other people, can be one of the hardest things I need to do. When those times come upon me, I need to stop and consider Jesus Christ and the enormity of His forgiveness. If He forgave me for all I have done wrong, then I also should forgive others, regardless of how difficult that might be to do. Again, is that your experience? Forgiveness deals with my emotional responses toward an offender. Forgiveness enables me to have the same openness toward the person after they offend me, as before. When I forgive the offender, the hurt and the wound start to diminish. This is helped when I realise Jesus Christ understands all of this. I can use these experiences for my eternal advantage. Is that your experience of forgiveness – both in giving and receiving? Temptation: It’s an undeniable and inevitable fact of the Christian Disciple’s life! It is certainly true of my own life. But it is good to know that temptations are common experiences for all Christian Disciples, and not just for me as an individual. No matter what I may think at the time! An important thing to note and remember, is that temptation itself is not sin! Rather it is the giving into temptation that causes me to sin. How easily it is for me to forget that. One of the keys to living a life right with God and not sinning is by dealing with temptation the very moment it confronts us. As a Christian Disciple, I face temptation from three different angles: the world, my old nature and satan. It is not just out and out temptation that Jesus means here, but also the tests and trials of life. We are to overcome both temptations and trials, in order that our character may, through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, become more like that of Jesus, our Master. Deliver: What I am delivered from, is better translated I think, as “evil one” rather than “evil”. satan tempts you and I for being a Christian Disciple. It is he who suggests to me that I should not forgive others and to trust in myself for my own needs. It is he who does not want God to be my number one priority or for God’s will to be done on earth as in heaven. It is satan who does not want God’s kingdom to be spread. Neither does satan want Jesus Christ to return in glory. Therefore, as a Christian Disciple, I am to pray for these things. I need to rely and trust in God for deliverance from satan, who wants to snatch away the Christian Disciples inner joy and dependence on God. Your Power: How can God deliver me from temptation, trials and satan? He can, because He is always all–powerful and eternally almighty. Christian Disciples are to rely on God’s strength to overcome temptation, trials and satan, and not to rely on their own strength. By relying on our own strength, failure is inevitable, but by trusting in God and His power and strength, overcoming temptation, trials and satan is assured. How easy it is to forget such fundamentals of Christian living! Your Glory: What is the aim of being a Christian Disciple, a follower of Jesus Christ? It is for me to give all glory to God regardless of what personal achievements I have gained. His glory is to be my supreme concern, so that God is number one in all aspects of my life as a Christian Disciple. Ergo, I am to pray that His will is done in me, in other Christian Disciples and in the world. I am to pray that His kingdom continues to grow until Jesus Christ returns in majesty and glory. Amen: May it be so, Lord, as I ask in faith of you. That is all for today! Is it possible for anyone to leave homosexuality behind and find freedom in Jesus Christ? It is indeed, but we don't often hear from the real people who experienced the lifestyle firsthand and left it behind to follow the Lord. George Carneal was enmeshed in homosexuality for 25 years and will join me to tell his story of Christian transformation as we discuss his book, "From Queer to Christ: My Journey Into the Light." Plus: How do proclaim Jesus in a culture of confusion? I'll talk about it with Abdu Murray, North America director of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries and author of "Saving Truth: Finding Meaning and Clarity in a Post-Truth World." That's next time on Monday's JANET MEFFERD TODAY.

Revelation is not as weird as you might think

Session 10, part one – Chapter 19 John's visions in the final chapters of Revelation (19-22) reveal a set of relationships that help explain God's purpose in redeeming and restoring His creation Old testament world view – God is a covenant God – God who works through relationships - The progress of redemption begins with creation and contracts to one faithful covenant partner – Jesus Christ - It then expands until all creation is caught up in God's recreation of humanity and ultimately a new heaven and earth Chapter 19 – 22 -> John will, in turn, resolve each relationship in terms of God's redemptive purpose Church “bride” / elect World “nations” World “nations” Israel “God's city” Church “bride” / elect Israel “God's city” 4-fold “Hallelujah!” -> Praise the Lord! 1. “Salvation and glory and power belong to our God” - Celebrating righteous judgement against Babylon - Blood of servants avenged 2. “our Lord God almighty reigns” 3. The wedding of the Lamb has come - Lamb (bridegroom) & bride - Bride -> ready, bright and clean, clothed in righteous acts - Blessed are those invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb Heaven and earth - Entry of earthly church into heavenly state as a bride of Christ – heavens perspective on the Church - “For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” -> The testimony of Jesus is a revelation of Jesus' words and actions in heaven -> The spirit of prophecy is the communication of God's heart for his people on the Earth Attention shifts to the Bridegroom - Rider on a white horse - True conqueror, faithful & true - Judges and makes war - Imagery recalls chapter 1 - Battle – manifest victory -> earth will see heavenly reality CHAPTER 19 – The day of the Lord - one event from two sides - saving & judging, wedding & battle - Another invitation to gather together for the great supper of God (v17-18) - Imagery encourages readers to consider these two ‘feasts' in parallel OT pictures of Armageddon Joel 3 - Gathering of the nations for battle against Israel follows the pictures of the restoration of Zion in Ch 2 - Enemies think they are gathering for war but they are being gathered for judgement (consequence for how they related to Israel) - “then you will know” – vindication of God's righteousness - Unveiling to Israel – The Lord will be seen as a faithful deliverer and ‘refuge for His people' - Final unveiling for enemies– not for repentance, but for wrath Ezekiel 38-39 - Ch 37 – ‘Valley of Dry Bones – the promise of the resurrection of Israel, Kingdom restored to the land, and poured out spirit - Same pattern as Joel – an unveiling for both Israel and the nations - God's purpose is to “show Himself holy before their eyes” - Nations will know His Lordship in their defeat and destruction - Israel will know His Lordship in His faithful deliverance of His people Questions 1. How does the story of redemption through history that the bible presents help us to make sense of God's purpose in restoring all things? 2. In what ways are the wedding and the final battle two sides to the unveiling of the day of the Lord? 3. As Christians, how can knowing the person of the Bridegroom & the Great Conqueror encourage us to live in the power and intimacy of His life now?

EYES ON CHRIST Balance is huge in sports. But in Matthew 14 when Peter was walking on the water and eventually he began to sink, was that a balance issue? No, it really wasn’t a balance issue. He had the supernatural power of walking on water as he kept his eyes on Jesus Christ. His issue was his mind, not his feet, not his athletic ability. Jesus rebuked him when they got back into the boat and He said, “Why did you doubt?” In other words Jesus was saying why did you take your eyes off me? Why were you not circumstance-free instead of being circumstance-based? How about you? Is your mind focused on Jesus Christ? It's not a matter of physical issues and circumstances. It's only a matter of keeping your eyes on Christ and nothing shall be impossible to you.

Sister Lynzi Clyde Lynzi Clyde was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona as a member of the church. She attended Arizona State University for one year and then transferred to Brigham Young University in Utah. She and her husband have been married eight years and have three children. They currently live in Boston, Massachusetts and previously lived in a Utah ward where Kurt was their bishop. Highlights 7:00 Lynzi was called as a Primary president at age 23, with a brand new baby, in a highly transient ward of primarily Harvard Business School students 9:45 The ward youth and primary are combined with a Spanish branch and a Mandarin branch 11:25 Biggest blessing was amazing alignment of counselors: two from the English ward, one from the Spanish branch, one from the Mandarin branch, and a secretary from the English ward 12:35 Creating unity in this primary started by building unity in the presidency. She started with “highs and lows”: what is going well and what do you need prayers for? This allowed them to feel more comfortable and also willing to share ideas with each other. We need to be vulnerable if we are going to touch people 14:35 How to lead with non-English speaking parents: two experiences, one good and one not as good. A child with learning disabilities – spent lots of time trying to engage him, but in the two years saw little progress. She told the mom to just keep bringing him back and let him be with them. Three years later, saw him in the hallway preparing for baptism. It could have gone a different way if they hadn’t included him in the primary. We need to work with the parents and communicate the love that we have for their children so they can leave them with us. A child from a non-English-speaking family – as it was time to move to Sunbeam class, her mother didn’t want her to move out of nursery. The “rules” say to move the child, and the nursery leaders wanted her to be moved but the mother didn’t want it to happen. Kept pushing the mom and she did take her to Sunbeams, but the girl ran away and got lost in the building. It ended badly and she knew she didn’t follow the spirit like she could have. They later left the branch and she felt she didn’t do what she needed to do to express love. How do we support the family and the parents in these decisions? 25:00 We need to stand up for our own revelation. She knows she can be straightforward and demanding when asking for what she needs. She tried to understand the difficulty of the bishopric in this ward as well, but just kept pushing and providing the reasoning. Every chance she got, I would send emails, talk to them in the hall, just a reminder constantly. There's a balance between advocating for what you need but also stepping back and just take care of the Sunday meeting time. 29:15 Don’t be afraid to have the discussion or push the discussion. What is the worst that can happen? Reference to Barbara Morgan Gardner’s book “Women and the Priesthood”. 30:10 The bishops and counselors always asked “what is your biggest need” – both in the callings, but also spiritually. Get yourself past that barrier of needing to sugar-coat everything. Be willing to speak up. You will feel a closer bond with those that you struggle with in the end. 32:20 Lynzi's “Learn, Live, Love Yourself” podcast for Latter-day Saint women who are passionate about progress, who like to challenge themselves and learn things. She provides “POP” (power of practice) challenges with every episode. 34:50 How has leading made you a better follower of Jesus Christ? “It has put me on a faster track to spiritual maturity.” Sister Marcie Bayles Marcie Bayles lives in Bentonville, Arkansas. Originally from Colleyville, Texas, she has also lived in Southern California and Shenzhen, China. She previously taught high school Computer Science and Math and is currently a Life Coach with five children. She has served as Young Women president and advisor, choir director, primary chorister,

I love the Book of Revelation. It's the last book of the Bible and it's awesome! I must have done over 20 Bible studies on Revelation. The first time you read through it you may think it's something between a fantasy, sci-fi thriller and fire-and-brimstone preacher with a little "Ghostbusters" mixed in. It isn't easy to understand. However, the BEST Bible Study on Revelation is one I discovered in the Bible.com app by Pastor Kris Langham of ThroughTheWord.org. That was also my introduction to the Through The Word app. Pastor Kris explains it so well that it was an epiphany for me. The Book of Revelation Opens with... This is a revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants the events that must soon take place. He sent an angel to present this revelation to his servant John, who faithfully reported everything he saw. This is his report of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Revelation 1:1-2 The rest of the story.... Bible scripture included in this podcast: Revelation 1:17-18 Revelation 2:12-17 Exodus 20:4-6 2 Peter 2:14-19 Galatians 5:17-24 Do you belong to Christ Jesus? Or do you just go to church because your parents went to church? Each Sunday, do you participate in rituals or do you truly worship our Savior, Jesus Christ? It's time to stop and seriously think about it. What does it mean when we say in the Apostles' Creed, "I believe in Jesus Christ?" It means so much more than simply acknowledging His historical existence. That's simply a matter of historical fact. So, what we saying? It's actually quite profound, wonderfully personal, and eternally comforting.

What is the heart of the gospel of Jesus Christ? It can't be something that we do, as so many preachers—especially Methodist preachers—believe. In this episode I explain why, and why it matters. Scripture comes from Mark 1:1-5 and Matthew 3:7-10. The theme song for this podcast is "Closer to the Heart" by Rush. I recorded this song from their 1981 live album, Exit... Stage Left.

Overview – Paul And The Fortunate Young Man. Acts 20:7-12. In our message today We had two main points. 1st we looked at how there is a clear pattern of the fact that there was a New Testament church that resembles the literal church as we see it today. A church service, supported pastors and leaders, a congregation, and they would all come together into some type of building as a church body, to worship and serve the Lord Jesus Christ together. Today this is a concept that many who profess the name of Jesus Christ fight against. This is a sad movement because theirs is NOT a claim that is Biblically supported. So, for my 1st main point to this message, I show you proof that the very first Christians in the Bible, actually had Sunday church services the way we see our churches running today. The 2nd part of my message focused on Paul and a fortunate young man and a terrible event that happens to the young man because of Paul’s long-winded preaching. Paul and the believers of the Asian city of Troas, come together to have their Sunday church service, on Sunday, and Paul continues on for roughly 4 to 6 hours. Well, about midnight, a certain young man gets weary and falls asleep, falling to the ground from a 3rd story window, and dies. Paul falls down on him, hugs him, and declares him alive. How did Paul go about doing this, as the scripture doesn’t record any way in which he prayed for him, or commanded him to come alive in the name of Jesus Christ? It was due to one of Paul’s main spiritual gifts from God, his gift of healing, and his faith in that gift that God would heal the fortunate young man. So, for my 2nd main point to this message I talk about the spiritual gifts God gives His kids today, and how and why we should use them, because we are supposed to be using them. There is a large amount of detail that I spoke about in this message that I left out of this overview, so come take a listen to the message and get all the details of this message. And, may God richly bless you, as you diligently seek Jesus Christ Pastor Ed Spagnoli

How many people on their way to Lahaina have either mocked the sign, or ignored it.Went to church while we were there- the pastor actually spoke about how he used to mock that sign as a young man, and now he was a pastor.Mark 13:24-27Christ is going to return to this earth!I want you to understand this- you are sitting here today on the back of hundreds of the Scriptures that were spoken in the OT about Jesus that CAME TRUE- It took a few thousand years for Messiah to show up after the promises of the OTAbraham heard the promises of God- and never lived to see them- they came to pass- thousands of years laterYour finite thinking of the limited scope of your life should not direct your belief in the fact of Christs return. There will be human eyes who will view the return of Jesus Christ- It is going to be COSMIC. Its going to be unlike ANYTHING you’ve ever seen Think about a person in 1870, if they lived for 100 years Did you think they they thought they would see 2 world wars, air travel, going to the moon and computers? Organ transplants? That’s just our inventions! Can you imagine it? From nothing in the sky- to seeing man on the moon?Christs return is an absolute certainty. Even if you don’t believe it- I do- I promise that it is going to happen. The scriptures promise it.MY FATHER DELAYS HIS COMING SCRIPTURE Matt 24:45-5150 the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for himand at an hour that he is not aware of,Revelation 22:20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.” Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! Many Christians are not prepared or expecting the return of Christ or at least they are living like he wontJames 4:13-14 13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will[g]go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen For what is your life? Greatest indications of Complacency and unbelief in the return of ChristLack of Preaching- Rarely hear teachings or preachings about the return of ChristLack of Knowledge- Most Christians can’t describe even the basics of his ReturnLack of Urgency- The salvation of our brethren, neighbors, our childrenLack of Passion for the things of God- How do your worship and serve?Lack of conviction- Accepting of unbiblical and antibiblical doctrinesLack of holiness- accepting of sin complacent in sinful actionsLack of Prayer- no dependence on God for their sustenance or provisionLack of investment- Care more about the cares of this world than the things of GodLack of depth- serving Christ for the momentary blessings, not for who HE is HOW WILL CHRIST RETURN? The return of Christ isn’t a metaphorical allegory, but a physical, tangible, real eventWhen it happens- EYES will see it. EARS will hear it. His physical body will returnIN THE SKY The Bible says according to Acts 1:11 “This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”and Rev 1:7 that Jesus will return in the sky and the clouds.is important- there will not be another virgin birth. There will not be someone who ‘becomes’ Jesus ChristThis is why you wont be wondering “is this the Christ:”? you’ll be seeing him come down from the Clouds in the sky- You may not be right THERE but there will be believers there. VIDEOScholars often wondered how everyone would watch on the whole planet before video!UNEXPECTEDLY Revelation 3:3 3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.If you are trying to plan his return around your sins and your lifestyle- you need to reconsider. There will be no advance warning. There will be no indication.Being in Bosnia- Playing cards- “THIS IS NOT A DRILL”- No advance warning.
