In 1931 Liverpool, a bizarre phone call sent William Herbert Wallace on a wild goose chase across the city. The caller, a man named "Qualtrough," had left a message for him at his chess club, asking him to meet at a non-existent address. When William returned home, he found his wife, Julia, brutally murdered in their parlor. The house was locked, there were no signs of forced entry, and the timeline seemed impossibly tight. Police immediately suspected William, believing the phone call was a ruse to create a fake alibi. He was quickly arrested, tried, and convicted, only to have the verdict overturned in an unprecedented move by the Court of Criminal Appeal. For nearly a century, the case has remained one of Britain's greatest unsolved mysteries. Was William a cunning killer who almost got away with it, or an innocent man framed by a phantom? The Knight Center for the Future of News at ASU's Cronkite School isn't tinkering at the edges of journalism — it's ripping up the blueprint and starting fresh. Dean Battinto Batts calls this moment “an inflection point,” where trust is eroding and technology is racing ahead faster than most newsrooms can follow. Julia Wallace insists transformation must be rooted in community, warning that too many audiences have been “left alone” without information they can rely on. Together, they're pushing for flatter newsrooms, bold experiments with AI, and business models that do more than keep the lights on — they rebuild confidence in what news is for. The Knight Center for the Future of News focuses on creating sustainable models and innovative practices for the journalism industry through three core initiatives: the Journalism, Community & Democracy Lab; the Sustainability Lab; and the Innovation in Reporting & Storytelling Lab.Dean Batts and Prof. Wallace emphasize the importance of adapting to the changing dynamics of news consumption and audience engagement, recognizing that while the industry faces significant challenges, there is still a strong demand for credible information. With the support of a $10.5 million grant from Knight Foundation, The Knight Center for the Future of News will foster innovation, research, and collaboration to ensure a sustainable future for journalism. The center will function as a dynamic environment akin to a teaching hospital, where real-world applications and student mentorship converge to test new journalism concepts. Students will actively participate in hands-on projects, working with professionals to innovate in journalism.Batts and Wallace express optimism about the role of education and new initiatives in reshaping the field, urging a shift in mindset to view disruption as an opportunity rather than a setback. In this episode, Oden talks to Julia Wallace, member of Left Voice and SEIU 721, and Hector Rivera, a queer, Chicano, socialist educator who writes for Tempest Magazine. They discuss what's going on in Los Angeles, California, which has become a flashpoint in President Trump's war on immigration and attacks on the working class. Hector and Julia also describe the ways that communities have been fighting back, including independent self-organization, and how the struggle against the Far Right is connected to the fight for other democratic rights. The working class, community organizations, the immigrant rights movement, and other social movements can unite their forces and go even further to definitively push federal agents out of the city and win rights for immigrants — in California, and beyond.
In 1931, William and Julia Wallace had what seemed to be the perfect life. The couple had been married for over 16 years and resided in Liverpool. This perfect life, however, came to a screeching halt when Julia Wallace had her skull smashed in with a blunt object on the night of January 20, 1931, in the Wallace family home. This heinous crime led investigators in England on quite the journey, ending with the most usual suspect in these types of crime: the husband. But did William really kill his wife that night? Or is our killer more clever and sneaky than anticipated?SOURCES: 1) The Julia Wallace Murder Foundation2) William Herbert Wallace -- Wikipedia

The murder of Julia Wallace in 1931 is a case that has baffled investigators and armchair detectives alike for nearly a century. Dubbed The Impossible Murder, it's a mystery so perplexing that it seems to defy logic, leaving even the sharpest minds unable to agree on who the killer truly was—or how they carried it out. With a web of conflicting evidence, unanswered questions, and a trail that's long gone cold, this story remains one of the most chilling and unsolvable crimes in British history. Our other podcast: "FEARFUL" - https://open.spotify.com/show/56ajNkLiPoIat1V2KI9n5c?si=OyM38rdsSSyyzKAFUJpSywMERCH:https://www.redbubble.com/people/wickedandgrim/shop?asc=uPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/wickedandgrim?fan_landing=trueYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@wickedlifeFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/wickedandgrim/ Instagram:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wickedandgrim/?hl=enTwitter: https://twitter.com/wickedandgrimWebsite: https://www.wickedandgrim.com/ Hosted on Acast. One of the most recognizable writing styles in Arizona history came from Clay Thompson. The Iowa transplant captured the hearts of readers with his Valley 101 column in the Arizona Republic for almost 20 years. Punctuated by the iconic Rodin statue, "The Thinker," Thompson wrote thousands of quippy columns and answered questions from readers about everything from cactuses to hiccups. Thompson's writing style was recognizable and even bordered on snarky, calling his bosses "masters" and referring to readers as "you people." About a year after he passed, this podcast was born to carry on the great work that he created. It was formed to help newcomers and natives alike better understand what makes Arizona so unique. Similarly to podcasting, Thompson had a way to speak directly to an audience. As Valley 101 rounds closer to its 300th episode, Julia Wallace, Ed Montini and Arizona Republic reporter Richard Ruelas reflect on what made Thompson special and highlight the service he did for Arizona journalism. In this episode you can hear readings from "Great Big Book of Life," "Occupy Gooberville" and "Try Not to Worry About It," collections of his columns. Learn more about your ad choices. Host Meg Wolitzer presents three works that offer unusual perspectives on clothes and fashion—selling, making, and coveting. In Anne Enright's “(She Owns) Everything,” read by Mary-Louise Parker, a saleswoman becomes a compulsive consumer. In “Clothes on the Ground: A Conversation with Leap,” we hear from a Cambodian garment worker, interviewed by Julia Wallace for the compendium Women in Clothes. Leap is voiced by Jennifer Lim. And shopping is an antidote to aging in Joanne Harris's “Faith and Hope Go Shopping,” read by Lois Smith.

Host Meg Wolitzer presents three works that offer unusual perspectives on clothes and fashion—selling, making, and coveting. In Anne Enright's “(She Owns) Everything,” read by Mary-Louise Parker, a saleswoman becomes a compulsive consumer; In “Clothes on the Ground: A Conversation with Leap,” we hear from a Cambodian garment worker, interviewed by Julia Wallace for the compendium Women in Clothes, edited by Sheila Heti, Heidi Julavits, and Leanne Shapton. Leap is voiced by Jennifer Lim. And shopping is an antidote to aging in Joanne Harris's “Faith and Hope Go Shopping,” read by Lois Smith.
We dive into a real life locked-room murder mystery in the first ever episode of A STUDY OF STRANGE. Who killed Julia Wallace on September 20th, 1931? It is a case that has stumped investigators for nearly a century. Our special guest, writer of mystery & thrillers, Norm Thoeming aka August Norman, joins to help figure it out. Read Norm's work here! Julia's body was found by her husband, William Herbert Wallace, after returning home from a bizarre outing. Initially the doors to their home were locked before William gained entry to find the brutal scene. William H. Wallace had alibis, lots of them in fact, but their apparent strangeness lead investigators to presume William committed the act of murder. He was tried and convicted to death before an appeal set him free. If William didn't do it, who did? Thank you for listening! The murder of Julia Wallace has remained unsolved for over 90 years. It was in the winter of 1931 when Mr. Wallace returned home one night to find his wife violently beaten to death. There was no murder weapon located and no clues that pointed to any suspect other than the one who had access to the house — her husband. In a real life case that reads like a TV detective show, was this a sinister plot by someone to off an elderly woman, or was William guilty of the murder? We'll let you decide…

It's Alaina-centric and it's old timey!! We're heading back to England in the 1930's. William Herbert Wallace is quite a character, and to be honest so is his wife Julia. When Julia turns up dead in their home, people start taking a closer look at Wallace and his idiosyncratic tendencies. Why doesn't he seem to be emotional, why is he just petting the cat so nonchalantly, what is this dude's deal? Is he telling the truth about not being involved? Just when you think you know, another shady character steps on the scene!! HelloFresh: Get twelve free meals—including free shipping!—when you use code morbid12 at HelloFresh.com/morbid12.
