As we've already covered at other times on this podcast, 1989 was a golden year for film, specifically the action genre. Since we already reviewed Batman (1989) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), it is now time to cover that year's third place box office winner, Lethal Weapon 2. Franchises weren't really a thing yet, but after the splash the first Lethal Weapon made on video, not to mention the 80s action wave being cemented by Die Hard the year before, producer Joel Silver was adamant that it was time for a new Lethal Weapon. So he called his wonderkind Shane Black to write another one, which he did with his friend Warren Murphy. But director Richard Donner wasn't too happy with what he came up with, so he once again brought in Jeffrey Boam to do some touch ups. Though if you ask Black, he had completely rewritten what he wrote. But the result, is a slam bang action romp that, as already established, was a box office hit. Do the boys enjoy where the series went? And besides ‘diplomatic immunity', what is memorable about it? Download below to find out what Garrett, Matt, and Adam have to say about what many call a better film than the firs

“You just digested the bad guy.”Innerspace came about after Jeffrey Boam took Chip Proser's original script and injected comedy into the straightforward sci-fi concept. With Joe Dante directing and Steven Spielberg executive producing, the film had the freedom to push boundaries. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off our 1988 Academy Awards Best Visual Effects Nominees series with a conversation about Dante's 1987 film Innerspace. Here's a hint at what we talk about:We discuss the impressive visual effects that still hold up decades later, from the microscopic inner body sets to the giant props used for the miniaturized villains. Though we find some plot holes and dated elements, we agree that Martin Short's performance, the chemistry between him and the other two leads (Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan), and the film's playful tone make Innerspace an enduringly fun watch. Here are a few other points in our discussion: How Meg Ryan's reporter character becomes merely a plot device, even though set up as someone with agency The lack of resolution around Dennis Quaid's character's alcoholism Appreciation for Robert Picardo as The Cowboy and many other supporting roles filled with familiar Dante regulars Jerry Goldsmith's delightful score capturing the movie's energy Innerspace is a flawed but highly entertaining sci-fi comedy. While commercially successful, both the critical and ratings board backlash against Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom was almost too much for director Steven Spielberg to take. So much so, he wasn't sure he wanted to honor the three film deal he and friend George Lucas made, and he was looking at doing other things. At the time the third film was being developed, Spielberg had both Rain Man and Big on his desk to do. It was only after Lucas brought in writer Jeffrey Boam (and Spielberg was allowed to keep the story not so much about the McGuffin as it was about Indy's relationship with his father) that the director finally relented. The result, Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade. Looked at almost as more course correction than the end of a trilogy, the third Indiana Jones adventure brought in former James Bond Sean Connery, and was turned into a light hearted adventure that despite being released in the huge summer of 1989 (which also contained the already covered on this podcast Tim Burton film Batman) was still the biggest movie of the season, and would have seemed to send the whip cracking archaeologist literally into the sunset happy. Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they continue their dive into the Indiana Jones franchise with their review of Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade. And be sure to keep checking back as their review of Indiana Jones And The Dial of Destiny is right around the corner.

Richard Donner directed and Shane Black & Jeffrey Boam wrote it. Mel Gibson stars along side of Danny Glover as a cop on a suicidal edge since losing his wife & becoming partner to Detective Murtaugh (Danny Glover). They stumble upon a huge drug dealing operation while trying to help one of Murtaugh's old war buddies. The further the case goes along the closer they become as partners and eventually just like family. This set off a franchise of movies and a TV show years after the movies started. Personally, it's on of my favorite Mel Gibson films, what are yours? Be sure to sign up for the newsletter/notifications of new podcasts and any news or extra content we publish. Book: The Dead Zone By Stephen King Film: The Dead Zone (1983) Released in 1979, this was Stephen King's first smash hit which was also the first of his books to kit the top ten best sellers. This was also the first novel to feature the fictional town in Maine called Castle Rock. This science fiction thriller would spawn a critically acclaim film directed by David Cronenberg and a six season television series which aired on the USA Network. The Dead Zone (1983) The film was directed by David Cronenberg with screenplay written by Jeffrey Boam. The film started shooting in January 1983 in the the Niagra Falls region. The cold and brutal winds were sometimes unbearable for cast and crew. Interestingly enough, Bill Murray was first choice but producers felt that he was not dramatic enough and Christopher Walken was cast instead. The film is considered one of the best Stephen King adaptions. We are joined by Barbara Venkataraman, author of the Jaimie Quinn Mystery series. Episode 268: The Crew's watering their rub (condom) tree while watching Richard Donner's wild Lethal Weapon 2. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are back in action from the first frame (the films starts mid-car chase). Joe Pesci is a welcomed addition to the cast…. ok, ok, ok, don't eat the tuna at Subway. The first installment is a great action film, but this sequel is funny and entertaining with loads of memorable set pieces. This week on Long Walks and Robots...On their way back to the present our Robots made a little pit stop in the birthplace of modern-day action, the 80's. Ryan and not that Shane Black gush over the golden age of that Shane Black. They break down not just one Lethal Weapon, but two! Well, Lethal Weapon 2. Although they do talk about the first Lethal Weapon, so 2 and two I guess. Yeah... I don't know! I'm gettin too old for this podcast. As if that wasn't a steamy enough adventure, they also get a good glance at Ray's Win-Stones. Huh Huh! They watched Sexy Beast! Ok, moving on.Marvel, Marvel, Marvel. You almost had us. With seconds left on the clock, Loki pulls out a win by announcing a second season! While this post-credits series extension alleviated Shane's pacing concerns, it fell short of Ryan's hopes for the show and the Marvel television landscape. Ripples shmipples. Is Spider-Man almost here?? The boys also talk Rick and Morty, babble about bidets, and discover the elusive legend of Jeffrey Boam. All this and more on Long Walks and Robots...Enjoy!!
We're shrinking down and heading deep inside of this week's movie! That sounds a bit weird and doesn't entirely make sense but it's similar enough to the plot of Innerspace, released July 1st in 1987. It's a fun Joe Dante film about this guy who's miniaturized and accidentally put inside of another man. This week on Total Movie Recall, Ryan takes us on a journey through time and memory to show us his origins as a film-lover, a man, and, lo, a human. Sure, he could have said his favorite movie was some snooty, intellectual piece of New Hollywood cinema, but that would be a lie. It's a VHS that his father got him as part of a $5.99 Big Mac giveaway at McDonald's, and he was never the same. He makes himself vulnerable before you, and of course, Steve makes him regret it.
