When it comes to improving sales, all it might take to reach your goals is a shift in mindset. In today's episode of The Sales Evangelist, Donald is joined by Justin Cunningham to learn how any sales professional can stand out, transform, and optimize their mindset for better performance. You won't be able to sell until you believe you can sell. Adjust your beliefs. Try integrating a value-based reframe - People will form their beliefs after an experience. During your next relationship or interaction, you'll subconsciously look for those same affirming beliefs to support your existing notion. Decide that you want something better and find evidence to support that new belief. Set yourself apart to win larger-scale accounts: Learn what they're passionate about and what drives their bottom line to integrate a plan framed directly to them. A gatekeeper will pass individualized materials and information to a decision-maker rather than a mass-sent supply of information. Don't act like an employee; act like a business partner. When you focus on creating unique connections, relationships, and moments with others, you'll realize you're far more critical than a cog in the business machine. If you try something new, what's the worst that can happen? Propose new growth ideas and ways to improve your organization; if that is considered negative, it likely isn't the best environment for you. How leadership empowers their teams: Most people are completely underutilized. People are motivated by many different things, and determining your team's perspectives and mindset can be a powerful way to unify positions toward a common goal. Ask yourself and your team if your current actions are contributing to the company goal. If not, change your behavior. Justin's final takeaway? Believe that your radical insights are worth sharing. Don't be afraid to tell your ideas to those around you. Read Clicking by Faith Popcorn for more ideas about this topic, and visit ishiftresults.com to connect and interact with Justin. BIO: Justin Cunningham helps thought-leader business owners make simple changes to radically grow profits through standing out, creating transformative content and offers, and optimizing effectiveness. STORY: Justin overworked himself while planning an event in Los Angeles so much that he was out of his depth during the event. LEARNING: Face your fears and show up. Stay true to your passion. Your outcomes do not define you. “Luck is when passion meets opportunity.”Justin Cunningham Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/justincunningham1/ (Justin Cunningham) helps thought-leader business owners make simple changes to radically grow profits through standing out, creating transformative content and offers, and optimizing effectiveness. Justin is a former international music performer, designer, event producer, and editor of NZ Entrepreneur magazine. His business career as a global sales trainer, accelerated results educator, and the founder of the https://ishiftresults.com/ (SHIFT agent movement) and the celebrated ‘SHIFT Your results' system. Justin is best known for his fast results recipes for time-poor businesses and his ability to simplify the complexity of standing out and being rewarded in saturated markets. In short - Justin helps frustrated business rockstars go BIG! Take https://ishiftresults.com/quiz/ (The ‘Shift Your Results' - Business Owner Quiz) reveals the unconscious ways we are blocking our goals and results and how to overcome that. Worst investment everJustin wanted to go to Los Angeles and create an event called Creative supernova. He intended to support creative entrepreneurs. He was motivated, pumped, and fired up to host the event. Justin had a business partner helping him with the finances, and she also had a lot of relationships in Los Angeles. Promotions for the event started, but nothing was happening. No tickets were being sold at this stage. He'd already spent about $30,000. Justin went to LA, and even though he didn't have any support structure there, he stayed seven weeks on the ground hustling. He managed to get about 90 people to sign up for the event. Justin's biggest mistake was doing so much by himself to make the vent happen. He spent so much time hustling and getting it ready. He was also dealing with the grief of losing his dog and stepfather. This left him so burned out that when he went on stage during the event, he was out of his depth despite being a successful sales trainer. Lessons learnedFace your fears and show up. In that time, Justin was involved in initiatives to push data ownership to developers / domains. To sum up one of Justin's points he touched on repeatedly - he recommends to create a pool of low effort data which will inherently have low quality. Use that for initial research into what might be useful. Focus on maximizing accessibility - you can have governance and use things like join restrictions or give consumers an ability to self-certify that they are using the data responsibly. Once you get the use cases, then you go for the data mesh quality data products. Justin saw a lot of success at Yelp focusing on data availability - getting data to a place it could be found and played with - was a bigger driver for success than focusing initially on data quality. Once people discovered what data was available and how they might use it, the organization was able to work towards getting that data to an acceptable quality level. Another point Justin made was figure out which you want to optimize for in general: getting things right upfront or testing and changing. He believes in optimizing for change. Create an adaptive process and optimize for learning. Keep it simple and focus on value delivery - it will set up more tractable bets. At Yelp, they were trying to ETL a huge amount of data in their data warehouse to build reports for the C-Suite. But they were never really going to get enough data ingested to really meet their goals. It was taking them 2 weeks to create each new set of ETLs and that was just creation, not maintenance - it was looking like they'd need 5x the number of people. What Justin found the most useful at Yelp was to focus on getting as much "usable" data in an automated way. They achieved this initially through the data mesh anti-pattern of copying direct from the underlying operational data stores and building business logic on top of it. But, that data getting into the hands of the data team meant there could be an initial value assessment - once they proved out there could be value in the data, the conversation with developers was much easier to get them to care about providing clean and reliable data. Justin mentioned the same thing Wannes Rosiers mentioned in his episode: there are operational and analytical workloads but there should absolutely not be that separation when it comes to data. Data from operational systems is useful for analytics and vice versa. One thing that really helped developers understand how to share data was thinking of data sets as being similar to public APIs. At Netflix, there were just too many bespoke data sets - made it very hard to manage quality. What they found that worked was a data certification program for data sets, creating tooling to prove a data set was complete and accurate. That and upping the amount of focus on
In this episode of the No BS Sales School with Walker McKay, Walker talks to sales coach Justin Cunningham. Justin talks about how he shifted from a life in entertainment to marketing and sales. Justin also talks about his sales philosophy called ‘Connect and Solve', which is centered around finding solutions to solve a client's problems, instead of persuasion. In another life, Justin was a famous skateboarder and freestyle rapper. Make sure to make it to the end for a demonstration of Justin's freestyle genius. HIGHLIGHTSFrom skateboarding and rap battles to sales coachingFriction and propulsion in sales Connect and solveDon't rush the buying process How to establish rapport with your customersKeep asking 'why' until you reach the bottom of the problemGet attached to the process, not the results Lessons learned from door-to-door sellingQUOTESJustin: "It's about finding those performance black holes. Often, you don't need to reinvent yourself. You don't need to reinvent every tech and every strategy, and every sales technique. It's just finding, as Daniel Ariely, the social anthropologist would say, you should always look at your business systems and look at, are you increasing friction or increasing propulsion." Justin: "My sales methodology, I call it 'Connect and Solve.' And so, my whole ethos is really around the deeper connection I can make, the deeper opportunity I can solve. And of course, [this] leads to, from a pragmatic standpoint, a bigger sales opportunity, bigger profit, more lines on the invoice, more items per sale."Justin: "You need to understand what the opportunity is. Connect and solve, not attract and convert. You can say all the right things and you might be a super confident rock star, and I'm happy for you. But I guarantee you, if you're rushing, you're leaving money on the table, and you are not actually developing empathy and rapport."Justin: "Just show up and be everything you can be. Carbon monoxide poisoning took the life of 27-year-old Justin Cunningham in the parking lot of a World Series of Team Roping qualifier in Loveland, Colorado, Feb. 11, 2018. Cunningham was a son, a brother, a partner, a friend and a great roper, and his loss reverberates across the team roping industry. His story illustrates the dire need for awareness and prevention of CO poisoning, and his family is doing everything they can to make sure this doesn't happen to any more ropers just looking to stay comfortable in their trailers overnight. Michael Airhart exemplifies what one person can do to tackle a huge problem. For many years, he has cooked meals in his kitchen, has gone out into the streets, under bridges and into shelters to help feed and encourage those who are in need. What an honor it was to recently interview Michael Airhart in the Middleby Residential showroom in Chicago along with Justin Cunningham and Essence Smith of SocialWorks to discuss their collaboration with Taste for the Homeless on June 22nd.
