Harvest is approaching, and for some Wisconsin corn growers it can't come quick enough. Stephanie Hoff talks with UW-Extension Plant Pathologist, Dr. Damon Smith, about the potential for tar spot in corn. This disease can literally level a corn field in just a few days if the infection's bad enough. Rushing Waters in Palmyra is finding success raising trout in their fish ponds. It gives people a chance to fish, and harvest top quality protein. Ben Jarboe reports. John Heinberg, market advisor with Total Farm Marketing in West Bend joins Pam Jahnke to talk about the latest crop progress update and what agronomists are saying on the 31st annual Pro Farmer Crop Tour.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

River infrastructure is a critical transportation component for production agriculture. Stephanie Hoff finds out about its current status with Dennis Wilmsmeyer. He's the executive director of America's Central Port in the St. Louis region. He continues to advocate for infrastructure improvements along America's waterways, including the Mississippi River. He asks that farmers pay attention to this, too, whether they directly use the river or not. Dennis says that's because waterways are one of the primary export avenues for commodities and the primary route for inputs like fertilizer. The Wisconsin State Fair's Governor's Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction broke some records last night. The grand champion lamb sold for a record breaking $21,500 and sold to Molson-Coors. It was also the first time a grand champion meat goat was sold. It brought $10,000 and was purchased by Meijer.Wisconsin corn growers have faced numerous challenges this year from too much rain, to swarms of insects - and their challenges aren't done yet. Stephanie Hoff talks with Dr. Damon Smith, UW-Extension Plant Pathologist about the potential losses from tar spot late in the growing season. There's not much growers can do once it shows up.Mike North, primary partner with EverAg, joins Pam Jahnke to talk about the recent upturn in the cheese market and what's happening with international demand. UW-Madison Plant Pathology Prof. Damon Smith says while the tar spot risk has been high and folks are finding tar spot, overall the severity level -- how much disease is there -- is quite low right now. "We haven't reached the upper canopy yet, we aren't seeing yield-limiting levels of disease yet," Smith says. He says if farmers can get their corn crop through the risk window, they'll be outside of substantial yield reductions from this disease.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Unseen for a few years, two major wheat diseases have re-emerged, catching farmers off guard. Damon Smith, UW-Extension Plant Pathologist says he's starting to see diseases really taking hold and shutting the plants down early. “We're seeing the resurgence of stripe rust and fusarium head blight (scab),” says Smith. “After several years of relative calm, this has caught many by surprise.” Smith says he saw the most significant severity on certain susceptible varieties in our southern locations, particularly around Arlington. As we move north, the severity decreases, which aligns with the fact that stripe rust spores generally can't overwinter in Wisconsin and instead travel from the deep south.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How is the current health of our crops in Wisconsin? Is there any disease pressure present despite the drought? What can we expect for estimated overall yields? These all are million dollar questions, but UW-Extension Soybean Specialist Dr. Shawn Conley has the answers. He says disease levels are low this year however we're not completely out of the woods. He provides some insight into the questions that are on many growers minds. “There might be a low risk of white mold currently, however with the last rainfall event that occurred, we're going to see a jump in soybeans,” explains Conley. “So it's important to focus on R2 and early R3 for a white mold application.” Damon Smith, UW-Disease Management Professor created an app called Tarspotter. This app has been indicating that there is a high risk of tar spot in Wisconsin. Conley says farmers should stay familiar with the app to be prepared as it is coming. To learn more about the state of small grains in Wisconsin, check out Conley's website, Cool Bean.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It started with volunteering to lead teams of teens on international trips to help the underprivileged. Building homes, teaching English and doing what we could. It was just as much for the teens as others. Fast forward a few years later, I found myself battling my own health issues. Always into fitness , I was about a year into challenging myself at CrossFit (after a meeting with the original founder) when suddenly I started losing strength , weight and couldn't sleep. Stubbornly , I was talked into visiting my doctor. 3 Months later, and fighting to maintain what I weighed at 12 years old, I was told I had Hyperthyroidism. My "Only" option , according to San Diego's #1 endocrinologist, was to radiate my thyroid and go on medication the rest of my life. My sister, a holistic dietician, was able to send me to a practitioner that helped me heal naturally. She confided in me that years earlier, having told no one but her husband, she had a brain tumor. Attacking it naturally it had also made it disappear to the point her doctor was baffled. It was then that I decided I had a new mission. To help people heal naturally...but how? I began to dig in and learn. At this point I was about 80% of optimum for my age but still dealing with some issues. Then my sister discovered CellCore. After talking to me about using the line she saw that they were hiring, and recommended I apply. I walked away from a job paying double (at the time) and couldn't be happier! After two years with them, I not only have continued to build strength and health on the products, but better yet I get to work with practitioners to help thousands of people discover their healthiest lives are ahead , not behind. What is Shamanism? And how does it relate to martial arts? In this episode I catch up with my old, friend and teacher Damon Smith to answer some of these questions. Damon is an incredibly experienced martial artist with a background in various Japanese and Chinese arts including Karate, Kempo, Xing Yi, Baji and Choy Lee Fut. And those are just a few of the arts he's pursued to a very high level. But despite being a great martial artist Damon's true love has always been Shamanism. And while he's no stranger to banging a drum, Damon's shamanism is not the hippy dippy sort of practice you might associate shamans with, instead it's a very down to earth and practical art, much like the martial arts he does. In this episode we talk about the link between martial arts and shamanism, and where the crossovers lie. Music by lesfm from Pixabay To find out more visit www.thetaichinotebook.com

With the help of his anxious friend, Adam, these two, Australian musicians, share, with original music, preposterous humor, and outlandish animations, the intricate and debilitating nature of what it is like to live and talk about mental illness in a world where it's ok to talk about a broken arm but not ok to talk about a broken mind.https://mdff.org.au/films/mental-as-everything Andrew caught up with Damon to chat about how the film was made, what the creative process is like for a musician turned filmmaker, and the main theme of the film: mental health. It may sound like a dark subject on paper, but Mental as Everything embraces the subject with heart and compassion, and most importantly, a levity that is often missing with the subject of mental illness. On this long-awaited episode, the stars finally aligned and Brett’s good friend, Damon Smith joined us on the podcast. It was all out on the table – Trump, Biden, covid conspiracies, 5G, basically what your friends tell you not to talk about in public, but we did. Don’t worry folks, we know the limits and are sure not to cross them but there are some tense moments on the podcast. This is how it is with us off air as well. We just feel that with honesty and respect you can cut through a lot of misunderstandings that exist in today’s culture. It also helps that we’re good friends and know how to have a good time as well. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did having it. Another classic for the vault. Daniel “unicornFurnace” Crowley Security Consultant, NCC Group Damon Smith Associate Security Consultant, NCC Group Certain file formats, like Microsoft Word and PDF, are known to have features that allow for outbound requests to be made when the file opens. Other file formats allow for similar interactions but are not well-known for allowing such functionality. In this talk, we explore various file formats and their ability to make outbound requests, as well as what that means from a security and privacy perspective. Most interestingly, these techniques are not built on mistakes, but intentional design decisions, meaning that they will not be fixed as bugs. From data loss prevention to de-anonymization to request forgery to NTLM credential capture, this presentation will explore what it means to have files that communicate to various endpoints when opened. Daniel (aka "unicornFurnace") is a Security Consultant for NCC Group. Daniel denies all allegations regarding unicorn smuggling and questions your character for even suggesting it. Daniel has developed configurable testbeds such as SQLol and XMLmao for training and research regarding specific vulnerabilities. Daniel enjoys climbing large rocks. Daniel has been working in the information security industry since 2004 and is a frequent speaker at conferences including Black Hat, DEF CON, Shmoocon, and SOURCE. Daniel does his own charcuterie. Truly one of the great comedy minds of our time, director Adam McKay has now used his powers for the betterment of mankind. He's created a magical land inhabited by multi-colored Alpacas who love lollipops and rainbows, to teach us about the growing divide in wealth distribution. It's called "The Unbelievably Sweet Alpacas". Just one of 20 short films for Morgan Spurlock's "We The Economy" project. It's voiced by a winning trifecta of comedy talent: Sarah Silverman, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph. NPR Host & economist Adam Davidson advised. Cinelan Managing Partner David Laks offers a pre-interview interview, explaining the program. Documentarian Miao Wang made a short docu about Chinese factories in South Carolina that must be seen. She's in the roundtable with Adam McKay. Damon Smith, Supervising Producer, Cinelan is the moderator. Thanks to the SideShow Network, I joined Mr. McKay in a round table discussion at the press conference for "We The Economy". It's documentarian Morgan Spurlock's series of short films by notable filmmakers. Each director teamed with actual economists to craft eye-opening, and often funny shorts.
