Battery-electric crossover vehicles are the new vehicle du jour, and one of the latest to join the fray is the Kia Concept EV9, a stalking horse for the brand's upcoming production version of the vehicle. In a suddenly very crowded segment, the EV9 is one of the best-looking, and it is filled with advanced tech. To learn more about the EV9 we had the chance to talk with Karim Habib, Kia Senior Vice President and Head of Kia Design Center. What distinguishes the EV9 Concept from others that are plowing the same ground. Our interview will reveal that. In the road test segment of this week's show, Co-Host Chris Teague will be giving his thoughts on the 2022 Honda Civic hatchback. All-new for the 2022 model year, the Civic Hatchback is one of the most versatile compact cars you can buy. Also in the road test segment Host Jack Nerad and his family tested the newest version of one of the most venerable and venerated vehicles of the past several generations, the Toyota Land Cruiser. They got the chance to wring it out on several family adventures over the past 10 days, and he'll have a full report. In the news, there is new heat under the idea of flying cars. The fodder of many a future prediction in the 1950s, small vertical takeoff aircraft now might graduate from being a pipedream to becoming reality. A lot of big money has gotten behind the idea of “flying taxis.” Also in the news, Chrysler and Jeep haven't been at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution up to now, but that might change this week, based on big announcements the brands intend to make at CES in Las Vegas. We'll give you some details.

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   KIA EV6 UNVEILED AS NEW ELECTRIC FLAGSHIP "The new EV6 is Kia’s first bespoke production electric car and pairs a radical new design with unprecedented levels of performance for the brand. " reports Autocar.com: "Revealed ahead of its official full debut later this month, the EV6 will spearhead a wave of new-era electric cars from Kia. Each will be badged EV followed by a number corresponding to its size. So the EV6 crossover is a mid-sized car, which leaves room below for compact SUVs, hatchbacks and saloons, and for larger SUVs at the top of the range. EV6 shares its E-GMP platform with the recently revealed Hyundai Ioniq 5. This means it will have 800V hardware for charging speeds of up to 220kW and it should charge from 10% to 80% capacity in 18 minutes. "   "Entry-level versions are likely to have a single electric motor delivering power to the rear wheels and fed by a 58kWh battery pack, with more powerful models getting dual motors and a larger 72.6kWh battery." says WhatCar: " In its most powerful form, the EV6 will be able to sprint to 60mph in 3.5 seconds. Inside, there’s a digital screen in place of analogue instruments, plus a separate infotainment screen angled towards the driver."   Kia's press release said: ""The width of the screen creates an immersive experience for the driver, while a minimal number of physical buttons offer an uncluttered and soothing driving experience. Underneath the AVN screen, passengers control HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) settings by using haptic ‘buttons’, while below this panel, the dashboard slopes away towards the front of the car, creating a sense of space and openness for the front-seat passengers."   And Top Gear reported: "Kia’s head of design Karim Habib also confirmed to TG that other elements – such as that rear lightbar and the swept-back windscreen – might not necessarily be carried over, but that the principles would remain the same.  On the subject of that rear light bar – is anyone else getting hefty Aston Martin DBX vibes?  Elsewhere, there’s a new front light signature and chunky rear wheel arches, as well as the now-familiar black plastic seen on almost every crossover."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/2021-kia-ev6-all-new-electric-flagship-310-mile-range   https://www.whatcar.com/news/2021-kia-ev6-electric-suv-what-we-know-so-far/n22791   TESLA POSTS VIDEO OF SEMI ON TEST TRACK "Tesla has unveiled a new video of its Semi electric truck driving the test track in Fremont. In recent months, Tesla Semi is increasingly getting into the camera lens and is the topic of much discussion, as the company will soon be launching its production" reports Tesmanian: "In the video, we see an updated version of the Tesla Semi, which was first seen in early February and which had a number of design differences. The most notable change is the redesign of the truck's cab. It became lengthened and received additional side shields with windows. It seemed that this is the sleeper version. But in other photos, we could see that these are only shields, and the cab itself is not as long as it seems at first glance."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-posted-a-video-of-semi-on-the-test-track   UK’S ELECTRIC HIGHWAY TO BE UPGRADED BY ECOTRICITY "In the UK, Ecotricity’s network of charging stations along the ageing Electric Highway is to be comprehensively modernised. This will include contactless payment and multiple charging options." says electrive: "Gridserve is taking a 25 per cent stake in Electric Highway and contributing its technical expertise to upgrade the charging network, which will also involve round-the-clock customer support.   This project is scheduled for completion this summer. The second step involves installing a further six to twelve high-power charging points with a capacity of up to 350 kW at each location. The first site is scheduled to go into operation in April in the English town of Rugby."   https://www.electrive.com/2021/03/13/uks-electric-highway-to-be-upgraded-by-ecotricity/   TESLA TO OFFER AUTO INSURANCE PROGRAM IN TEXAS "Not only is Tesla moving some manufacturing operations to Austin, Texas, its founder, Elon Musk, is said to be relocating there, and the electric car company will soon be offering its own brand of car insurance in the Lone Star State." writes InsuranceJournal.com: "The state insurance department in late January approved a revised policy form submitted by Redpoint County Mutual Insurance Co. for a Tesla Insurance Program for private passenger autos. Tesla currently offers insurance coverage for Tesla vehicles in California and according to information on the Tesla Insurance website it expects to expand into additional states. Texas appears to be the first step in that expansion. Tesla Insurance on its website says its product is competitively priced and “designed to provide Tesla vehicle owners with up to 20% lower rates, and in some cases, as much as 30%.”"   https://www.insurancejournal.com/magazines/mag-features/2021/02/22/601959.htm   You can listen to all 1020 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #785   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 22nd May 2020. VW ID RANGE ONLY THE BE SOLD ONLINE "Volkswagen has announced that 100% of its retail partners have agreed to a new Tesla-like online sales model in Germany for its upcoming electric vehicle line, which starts with the ID.3." says Joey for Teslarati: "customers could buy directly from Volkswagen straight from their computer or smartphone. Meanwhile, dealers will continue to remain involved in the sales process through modes of “personalized customer care and local services.” After ordering their Volkswagen ID electric vehicle through the company’s website, buyers will then choose a preferred dealer that will take care of any needs they may require throughout the life of their car, like inspections, maintenance, or service. Dealers technically assume the role of a traditional vehicle sales representative, Volkswagen said. “They look after acquisition, sales consultation, organizing test drives, transaction processing and vehicle handover in coordination with Volkswagen,” the company added. The inclusion of the new online mode of ordering a VW electric vehicle helps customers save money because the manufacturer assumes responsibility for vehicle financing, residual value risk, and inventory costs. Some of these fees are included when buying a car from a dealership, which can add hundreds of extra dollars simply because the dealership is storing the vehicle on the lot."   https://www.teslarati.com/volkswagen-id3-tesla-inspired-online-sales-model/   SVOLT UNVEILED ITS NEW COBALT-FREE BATTERY CELL "In an online presentation SVOLT gave us more information about its NMx cobalt-free battery cell that’ll arrive next year. This long cobalt-free battery cell from SVOLT is specially made to be used in battery packs assembled with the CTP (cell-to-pack) technology. With the CTP technology instead of having battery cells inside modules, then modules inside battery packs, we remove modules altogether. We end up with long prismatic battery cells connected in series that are put in an array and then inserted into a battery pack, making it as simple as it can be." Says PushEVs: "This high-voltage battery cell has a nominal voltage around 4,7 V and can be charged at 5 V, which makes possible to assemble simpler battery packs with fewer cells. Only 80 cells in series are needed to reach 400 V, or 160 cells in series to reach 800 V."   In the comments, from Dr Max Holland: "The SVolt presentation made good points around need to minimize cobalt, which industry insiders are already well aware of. However, high grade Nickel also needs to ramp up mineral supply volume in the coming 5 years, and sometimes sees disruptive price spikes. Arguably only LFP is truly free from these kinds of mineral supply constraints, but the overall industry will benefit from having wide variety of chemistries / pathways, and some degree of substitutability between minerals, so that no one mineral can become a bottleneck/pain point. I empathize with SVolt – seeing Tesla, CATL, and BYD getting a large share of the battery headlines recently. If SVolt also have an efficient zero-cobalt approach, and innovative CTP designs, that’s good, and I can understand they want to announce it. They are also emphasizing greater thermal stability, which is sometimes a headlining topic in the China NEV market."   https://pushevs.com/2020/05/21/svolt-unveiled-its-new-cobalt-free-battery-cell/   KIA DESIGN BOSS HINTS AT AN ELECTRIC VERSION OF THE STINGER "We return to the much-scrutinized Kia Stinger, the critically acclaimed but slow-selling performance sedan whose future is the subject of intense speculation. Thanks to an interview in Top Gear with the head of Kia design, Karim Habib, we now have not only official confirmation that the four-door fastback is getting a mid-cycle refresh, but also some hints about how the model might stick around by evolving." Reports Autoblog: "In the interview, Habib said he hopes that the “spirit of the Stinger” remains as the Kia brand evolves. “As the technology goes toward EVs and as the world and its appetite for these types of cars changes, the concept probably has to evolve as well,” he said."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/21/kia-stinger-electric-car-hinted/   WORK HAS BEGUN AT MIRAFIORI ON THE FCA-ENGIE EPS VEHICLE-TO-GRID PILOT PROJECT The COVID-19 outbreak has not put a stop to the cooperation between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and ENGIE Eps (Paris:EPS), nor to their commitment to support the deployment of electric mobility.  Since the announcement with Terna in September of the intention to jointly experiment with interactions between electric cars and the power grid, based on a “smart” charging infrastructure, FCA has selected ENGIE Eps as the technology partner for the project, to build that infrastructure.  Work has therefore begun at the FCA plant in Mirafiori, Turin on the first phase of the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) pilot project. Once fully completed, it will be the largest plant of its kind in the world.   https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200520005296/en/Work-Begun-Mirafiori-FCA-ENGIE-EPS-Vehicle-to-grid-Pilot   TESLA CHINA VP: GIGAFACTORY 3 ON TRACK FOR 4,000 CAR PER WEEK IN JUNE "China-based Xinhua News Agency interviewed Tao Lin, Vice President of Tesla China Foreign Affairs. The interview was posted on Xinhuanet in Chinese. We translated it via Google. Lin told reporters that the factory in China is recovering well after the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, the situation went so smoothly that Tesla is using it as a model for reopening its U.S. factory in Fremont, CA." According to InsideEVs: "With the first phase of factory construction complete and operational, manufacturing capacity at the plant is estimated at about 150,000 units per year. However, Lin says, in the next few weeks – by June – Model 3 production will hit a target of 4,000 units per week."   https://insideevs.com/news/424555/tesla-china-4000-week-june-model-y-soon/   TESLA’S MODEL 3 INCLUDES V2G CAPABILITY…OR DOES IT? "In a recent filing with the Texas electric utility commission, Tesla seemed to relegate V2G to the list of future projects, implying that EV adoption had not yet reached the necessary scale, and that vehicle owners might not buy in to the technology.      However, Tesla does have a history of building in future-oriented hardware features, and keeping mum about them until it’s ready to implement them. So it sounded plausible when Electrek reported that an electrical engineer had discovered an unannounced bidirectional charging capability in Model 3" reports Charles for Charged EVs: "Phil Sadow (aka Ingineerix), challenged Gaxiola’s conclusions in a video. “I don’t believe that’s the case,” says Sadow. He has identified some components on the circuit board in question as diodes, which of course allow current to flow only in one direction. Electric Revs has spoken with Gaxiola, who now admits that he may have been mistaken."   https://chargedevs.com/newswire/are-teslas-models-3-and-y-already-capable-of-bidirectional-charging/   TESLA MODEL 3 LOSES ITS GLASS ROOF IN CONVERTIBLE CONVERSION YOU CAN BUY "Newport Convertible Engineering has the Tesla Model 3 convertible conversion for you." Says Autoblog: " takes the company about 2-3 months to complete the conversion. NCE strips the interior, restructures, reinforces and cuts the body, adds the convertible structure and then finally tests it for water leakage. The basic conversion with a manual-folding top is $29,500, according to information obtained by Motor Trend. If you want a power top, it’ll be $39,500. We've since confirmed both figures. From the looks of it, NCE removes the roof, but keeps the B-pillars in place, connecting them with a roll hoop of sorts."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/21/tesla-model-3-convertible-conversion/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Should Dyson have continued to make a £150,000 EV, or should we only make EVs realistic? September 2018 in Timmendorfer Strand stattfindet.
