We had Seth's wife Katie on the podcast to talk about her experience with purity culture. Seth, Katie, and Philip all grew up in the same religious denomination which had a high emphasis on purity culture. Unfortunately, if you know about purity culture then you know that it has a tendency to put all the emphasis on women and men are considered the victims. Philip and Seth believe there is a better way forward for the church and it begins with hearing stories of real people who have been hurt by this way of treating people, specifically women. Video mentioned by Katie with disclaimer: https://youtu.be/vG9o9m0LsbI?si=OrjkFecbqfSAdCd9 I think it's fair to include a disclaimer that it's from 1946 and talks about societal standards of the time in there as well. Particularly because of the theme of the podcast.

Not only that, but she also facilitates a beautiful program called Cultivate, which is all about trauma-informed care, and has recently created the most beautiful card deck called Contain. So what's this episode really about? This conversation is an in-depth conversation about trauma-informed care and trauma-informed coaching. Katie shares with us what trauma-informed care is, and how it came to be -  growing out of the roots of trauma therapy, PTSD and the experience of survivors. Trauma is something that affects all of us.We talk about how trauma-informed care has recently entered new and non-traditional fields, such as coaching, wellness and entrepreneurship businesses. Katie shares the importance of understanding that trauma-informed care has a significant history, and how to put this mode of care into embodied practice. We discuss how the current lack of supervision, mentorship, peer support, coaching and regulation means that many people are practising outside their scope if they identify as trauma-informed coaching people are practising outside their scope. It's really about how we move into this new wave of trauma-informed care to make it adaptable for all professions and spaces. We finish up with Katie explaining how she prioritises resourcing herself, and how she cares for her nervous system, as well as how her beautiful card deck was created as a way to create space for ourselves, and others. Why you should listenIf you experience any discomfort around identifying as a trauma-informed practitioner, this conversation will help you understand its scope and how to embody the practice as ethically and holistically as possible.LINKSYou can find the Contain card deck right here!Connect with Katie Kurtz:Website:    https://katie-kurtz.com/Instagram:    @_katiekurtzConnect with Sas Petherick:Website:    https://selfbelief.school/class/You can quote me on that…“I don't think we need to remove the term trauma-informed care, we need to reclaim it. Reclaim it in a way that brings us back to shared language and understanding of what it is. And encourage people to adopt it with integrity and within their scope of practice.” Katie Kurtz“You can't say you're trauma-informed, you have to be it. What I simply mean by that is, you can't just use words and not have action behind it.” - Katie Kurtz“It's about how we show up with this commitment to widen our lens and be super mindful of the lived experience of both ourselves and others and apply that as much as possible to the entirety of our work.” - Katie Kurtz“The paradox of being trauma-informed as a coach, means you know where you don't go. You almost need to have a trauma-informed lens, so you know when you have reached the limits of that.” - Sas PetherickLike what you hear? Why not help me reach more ears (and give my self-belief a boost) with a 5-star rating?Sign up for SBCA 2023 here: https://selfbelief.school/sbca

"Reclaiming our power & stepping into our power isn't something we attain, it's something that we always have within us."Welcome back our first repeat guest, Katie Kurtz! As a listener favorite with her first episode on making friends as an adult, Katie is back on the podcast with us to share her divine wisdom and light.Today, we are deep diving on how to show up as your real self - especially when you feel like you've worn a filter or a mask for your whole life. Whether that was trying to fit in, prove your worth, or be socially validated and accepted (like myself), we can all fell like we've lost what's real. Most importantly, Katie and I talk about how to show up as the real you in those relationships where you'd rather contract, shy away or dim your light. This could be getting quiet around your boss, in-laws, or other people that you feel like you need to appear a certain way around. I get this question about full self expression in all areas of your life a lot from my coaching clients and listeners and I just knew that Katie was the exact person to share the right answer. In today's chat, Katie also shares how to honor the fear, especially around the worry that people won't be real with us too if we let our guard down. One of my favorite things that she says is to dig deep and truly ponder the worst case scenario would be if you showed up fully expressed. (Because it probably wouldn't be that bad and it's simply the stories in our head holding us back). This episode is such a treat and I deeply respect and admire Katie's work. So, tune in, grab your notebook, and you'll be well on your way to genuine, soul-bursting connection.About Katie:Katie Kurtz is an Internationally Certified Life Coach, yoga teacher and speaker who guides women to connect with their authentic selves + courageously live life on their own terms. She is the founder of Soul Connect, a coaching + connection movement that is redefining how women connect to themselves and each other. Through her coaching, in person gatherings, yoga experiences + events, Katie's authentic spirit and gift as a connector allows her to create a unique space for women to be themselves, embrace their humanness, and reclaim what's real.In this episode, you'll learn:- Why we shouldn't engage in weather talk and how you can stop leaning on it.- That we ALL are craving more intimate, deeper, soulful connection with others.- That now is the time to do what you want because you'll never be ready.- "That reclaiming our power and stepping into our power isn't something we attain, it's something that we always have within us."- How yoga was Katie's gateway to self expression, self-development, and authentic living.- That "when we use our breath and our bodies, we are coming into a deep connection with who we are."- How to get real with your fear. (+ How fear gets louder as we go into the direction of our dreams and that's okay).- How to use your fear as a guiding compass. (+ Katie's lighthouse analogy).- "I know that when I feel fear, it's like a lighthouse and it's guiding me."- How to show up as your real self in situations where you'd rather wear a mask, a filter, or keep people at an arm's length. (+ How to think about what would happen if you let go of your "shoulds" and showed up real?)- How to dive deeper in a conversation with people right off the bat.- Why it's easier to celebrate others, but not ourselves.- "That the more we show up as who we are, the more we inadequately give others the permission to do the same."- "When we show up as ourselves, when we don't put on filters, when we are unapologetic about who we are, that's how we reclaim what's real."- Not to take it all so seriously.Resources Mentioned:- Katie Kurtz on Making Friends as an Adult & Cultivating Your Soul Tribe - Kelly Trach- Christine Barnes- The Human Hour Podcast- Ylonda Rosenthal-Greene of Awake to My Soul- Jacki Carr on Soulful Goal Setting, Boundaries & Trusting the Process - Kelly Trach- Jenna Dailey on Female Friends, Abandoning Perfection & Honoring the Process - Kelly Trach- Jenny Lynn Newell on Self-Awareness, Savoring the Now & Being a Student - Kelly Trach- Shannon Salentine- Julie Parker of Beautiful You- Reclaim Program- Lakeside Ohio Retreat with Kate Kurtz- The Inner CircleFind Katie: Instagram: @_katiekurtzInstagram: @soulconnectmovementsoulconnectmovement.comFind Kelly:Instagram: @kellytrachkellytrach.com
