Ann Brown, friend and educator, joins us again for a heartfelt episode on holidays. We talk about Santa, gift-giving, rituals, religion, and the validation of "wanting more." Ann's insights and recommendations are practical, funny, and easy to implement. Ann Brown has been a parenting educator and consultant for over forty years, working with individual parents, couples and groups. She taught her first parenting class when she was still pregnant with her first child, which means she really didn't know what raising kids was all about. Over the decades, she has raised her two sons, taught classes at Marylhurst Early Childhood Center in Oregon City, trained as a Waldorf teacher, created parenting support groups for the Hannah Andersson Family Foundation, and led workshops in California and Oregon. Her favorite gig, however, was co-hosting a cable television show with Dr. Amy, called "The Motherload", in which she and Dr. Amy answered parenting questions from callers and on-camera guests. My friends are not okay right now. My teacher-friends are not okay. It's the third week of October and one teacher-friend of mine said this will be her last year of teaching. Another friend said she's never seen behavior like this before and she's been teaching for over 15 years. And yet another said she's never had this much difficulty connecting with students. And we're not just talking about middle schoolers, who, let's face it, often get the ire of disdain for dysregulated, hormonal, reactive behavior. We're talking about kindergarteners, high school students, and preschoolers. This is not ok. My friends are not ok. When I feel this passionate about something and I feel like I can help, like I SHOULD help, I move into action. So, I'm hosting a one-evening, free workshop on why behaviors are so complex right now. If you're a teacher, you should be there. If you're a parent educator, you should be there. If you're a school counselor, you should be there. If you're a concerned parent, you should be there. If you're a school volunteer or aid, you should be there. If you're an administrator....you should DEFINITELY be there. Tell your friends. Tell your teacher friends. Invite your teacher friends because we've GOT to talk about this. You're not ok. It's ok to not be ok. But it's not ok to be alone. JOIN US HERE! & INVITE FRIENDS!!
You're about to uncover so much about how we can approach people in a more compassionate way with my friend, Danni Verona. Danni Verona is a Licensed Occupational Therapist who has been continuously serving the needs of families for 36 years. She specializes in infants, children and parenting and has gained her experience through working in schools, clinics, home visiting programs, and hospitals. As a mother of three children, a grandmother to a freshman in high school! Danni brings her love of learning and family into her experience. She is an Infant Massage program instructor, 5th degree Blackbelt Karate instructor and program director of a neurodiverse inclusive karate program she created through the Family Martial Arts Academy in Beaverton, and is a Certified Zero Balance practitioner. Danni now practices in her private clinic, that she designed to supports children and their families specifically in how they can discover the best way to optimize their personal processing and regulation needs. Danni has developed tools and programs to support individuals in learning more about their body's needs, as well as how their thinking and neurological processing impacts their ability to learn, regulate and interact with others. Danni's guiding philosophy is, “Working with the 'whole' child, means recognizing that they are whole, and it's our job as the caretakers of children to meet their needs by seeing who they are, and where they are in their personal development. In order to do that we have to continue to learn about our own processing systems, so we can create the circumstances and support that allows the children to grow into their greatest potential." Friends - you're in for a treat as we wrap up YEAR ONE of our podcast, The Most Important Medicine. Dr. Aimie Apigian, MD, MS, MPH is a double board-certified physician with 2 Master's Degrees in Biochemistry and Public Health and is the leading medical expert on stored trauma in the body. She bridges the worlds of functional medicine and trauma therapy to help accelerate the trauma healing journey through her framework and protocols addressing The Biology of Trauma™. Trauma became her study and passion after 2 very personal experiences for her: adopting 4-year-old Miguel from the California foster care system and experiencing her own severe health crash and burnout in 2014 while finishing her 3rd year of general surgery residency. Having to learn things she never learned in medical school to help her son and rebuild her own health and life, she now teaches what she had to learn: the difference between stress and trauma in the body and how to help the body heal itself. Her vision is to help 1 million professionals accelerate their own trauma healing journey and to bring the biology piece of trauma work to every medical and mental health education system in the world by the year 2041. And her work is getting worldwide recognition! She founded Trauma Healing Accelerated to offer online educational and experiential trauma healing programs that integrate all of the different pieces of training she has including Somatic Experiencing, NeuroAffective Touch, art narrative trauma therapy, and Internal Family Systems along with a long list of functional medicine mental health and addiction training. We're in desperate need to celebrate small joys in life. Join Dr. Amy as she discusses finding joy as a way to avoid re-traumatization. Finding joy helps to ameliorate some of the compounding stressors so that we have energy to draw from during hardships. This year has been coined, The Year of Sophia. Why? Because my daughter, Sophia, graduates from high school in just 4 days! The “why” is truly important and has allowed me to slow down, set boundaries and be intentional with my time. So, as different opportunities have cropped up for our family, for my business, or for each of us as individuals, the first question is: Will this interfere with any event for senior year? If so, it's a hard “no.” But, there are parts of Sophia (and every child) that deserve much brighter lights of celebration. I want to honor, not only her accomplishments, but her character. Thanks everyone for allowing me to gush about one of my greatest accomplishments. And to all the seniors graduating – I support you and celebrate you. May you find contentedness and reach for your dreams. And to the parents celebrating seniors – I see you. Great job. We did it. You'll be inspired by her wisdom and journey of burnout to advocacy to humanitarian work. Rola was born a doctor. Dr Rola is an award-winning physician, humanitarian, campaigner, speaker, social entrepreneur and coach. She's the first Syrian TED Fellow and the founder of CanDo - a humanitarian organization supporting frontline health and aid workers to save children's lives in their war-devastated communities.
