Hosted by Dr. Sarah Hensley, Specialized Social Psychologist, Attachment Theory Expert, and Founder & CEO of The Dating Decoder with Co-host Raina Butcher, Owner/CEO of Joyful Consulting, LLC. Welcome to "The Love Doc Podcast" where Host Dr. Sarah Hensley and her co-host Raina Butcher dive deep into the intricacies of love, attraction, attachment, relationships, and self-awareness. Dr. Hensley brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to help listeners navigate the complexities of modern romance. In each episode, Dr. Hensley tackles burning questions about love, relationships, and the mind's complexities, drawing from her psychological research, real-life experiences, and her own individual expertise, to provide insightful perspectives and practical advice.Episode 35: The Fearful AvoidantIn episode 35 of The Love Doc Podcast, Dr. Hensley dives deep into the world of the Fearful Avoidant (FA) attachment style, the most complex and variable of all attachment types. Known in earlier psychological frameworks as disorganized attachment, FAs oscillate between seeking closeness and pulling away, leaving both themselves and their partners in a cycle of confusion and pain. What Makes the Fearful Avoidant Unique?Dr. Hensley explains that FAs are the hardest attachment style to pinpoint because they embody traits from both anxious and avoidant types. Their deep inner conflict is rooted in a profound trust and betrayal wound, which makes it challenging for them to feel secure in relationships.• The Push-Pull Dynamic: FAs often seek connection, craving closeness, but then feel misunderstood or betrayed and instinctively push their partner away. This paradox creates a cycle of emotional highs and lows in their romantic relationships.Where Attachment Begins: The Childhood of an FADr. Hensley traces the origins of FA attachment back to childhood, often shaped by the most trauma-filled environments. These traumas can include:• Big T traumas (e.g., abuse, neglect, abandonment).• Little T traumas (e.g., invalidation, inconsistency, emotional neglect). She also emphasizes that FAs typically grow up with at least one emotionally dysfunctional caregiver, further complicating their ability to trust and feel safe. The Role of Parents:• Same-gender parent: Science suggests this parent leaves the deepest imprint on the child's attachment patterns.• Both parents: Combined, their behaviors create the template that teaches the FA that love is not safe, leading to deep-seated trust and betrayal wounds. The Negative Traits of an FADr. Hensley breaks down the challenging traits of FAs, especially how they manifest in adult romantic relationships:1. Hypervigilance:• FAs are highly attuned to subtle cues but often catastrophize them.• This makes them extremely sensitive and easily triggered, as their deep wounds leave them vulnerable to perceived rejection or betrayal.2. Trauma Responses:• Anxious-leaning FAs tend to react with anger and heightened emotional reactivity.• Avoidant-leaning FAs often dissociate, emotionally shutting down after feeling they've tried too hard for too long.3. Negative Bias in Relationships:• FAs often approach their romantic relationships with a belief that betrayal is inevitable, leading to high levels of criticism and difficulty repairing conflicts.4. Poor Partner Choices:• Subconscious patterns often lead FAs to pick emotionally unavailable or harmful partners, such as other FAs, dismissive avoidants, narcissists, or individuals struggling with substance abuse. The Positive Traits of an FADespite their challenges, FAs possess incredible strengths, especially once they begin healing:1. High Empathy:• Their ability to deeply understand and feel for others allows them to create profound connections.• Dr. Hensley cautions FAs to establish boundaries around their empathy to avoid co-dependency or self-abandonment.2. High Emotional Intelligence (EQ):• FAs are often exceptional in careers requiring deep emotional awareness and social skills, such as sales, law, or politics.3. Depth and Connection:• As deep feelers, healed FAs can foster rich, meaningful relationships that are both emotionally fulfilling and long-lasting.Final ThoughtsDr. Hensley concludes the episode by emphasizing that while FAs are complex and deeply wounded, their capacity for growth and transformation is unparalleled. They are true fighters, with a grit that comes only from thier deep feelings and high emotional IQ's. With healing and self-awareness, FAs can become some of the most empathetic, emotionally intelligent, and loving partners.“Fearful Avoidants,” Dr. Hensley says, “are proof that beauty can emerge from brokenness. Their complexity is what makes them truly special.”Tune in to hear more about how FAs can harness their strengths, heal their wounds, and build secure, lasting connections.Tune in to "The Love Doc Podcast" every Tuesday morning for candid conversations, expert guidance, and a deeper understanding of love and relationships in the modern world. “The pain was necessary in order to know the truth. But we don't have to keep the pain alive in order to keep the truth alive.”- Mark Nepo Rachel Guenther teaches us all about Big T and Little T traumatic events as she compares “trauma” to a trash compacter— Like we've pressed the button and shoved down all the garbage inside our bodies to create space to function— Eww. But that at some point, our bodies (and souls) are going to need to clear out the unnecessary load we are hauling everywhere with us. Dr. Skinner also adds how trauma changes how safe, or unsafe, we feel in our world. That when we are still in trauma, it's harder for us to show up in relationships as a parent and as partner. And how working through trauma is a gift we not only give to ourselves, but also to all the people around us...especially those most dear. We also learn about the safe, advanced therapeutic processes used to release trauma from the body, such as EMDR and ART. And how these processes work to release the pain from the events stored inside our bodies. Overall, the key takeaway is that after experiencing some of life's most harrowing and unfair events, finding safety, trust and healing is very achievable with the right support and resources. Filly is joined with Judith Richards, creator of the revolutionary trauma therapy, The Richards Trauma Process (TRTP). I first witnessed the power of TRTP when I had a new client do TRTP with another practitioner while she waited for lab results to come back. A few weeks later ALL her symptoms had disappeared - anxiety, depression, fatigue, brain fog, gut issues, and she was off her ADHD medication. I was mind blown, and knew I had to learn TRTP myself to help our clients get faster and more effective results! We now take all our 1:1 Private Ending Body Burnout Method clients through TRTP, and many of our Semi-Private clients add this on to their healing journey. So, I am soooo excited to have my wonderful & eclectic mentor Judith Richards on the poddie today! :) About Judith Richards Judith Richards is the creator of The Richards Trauma Process (TRTP), born out of her journey of resolving decades of severe abuse and trauma. For many years she suffered extreme physical and mental illness as a result of her psychological trauma and physical injuries. AND, she never gave up. With great courage and determination, she persisted, learning and discovering that there is a way to capture a life worth living. There is a way to the other side of trauma and its myriad symptoms. The result of this journey is The Richards Trauma Process. TRTP is fast, effective and safe. It resolves the issues of extreme trauma and is equally as effective in dealing with lower levels of anxiety, depression, fears and phobias – any issue which is trauma-related. Judith now teaches TRTP to mental health professionals. In today's episode, Judith talks to Filly about: Her own body burnout journey - chronic physical & mental health issues after years of extreme abuse & trauma, to the point that she died 3 times, and ended up a homeless “bin” lady with multiple personality disorder What is trauma and why so many people are struggling to overcome it An overview of TRTP trauma therapy and how it works Why TRTP is so effective at clearing past distressing events quickly, in as short as 2-weeks Big T vs Little T, and why ALL people with body burnout & “busy” patterns have unprocessed trauma The power of the imagination - the language of the unconscious mind - and how it is used to transform trauma How Judith used the power of the imagination and beliefs to heal from hydrocephalus and kidney dysfunction Why reprogramming unconscious core beliefs are important for resolving trauma and trauma patterns Show Note Links: Learn more about Judith and TRTP here Join the waitlist for the Ending Body Burnout Method (TRTP with Filly is included in the Private 1:1 option, and can be added on to the Semi-Private option) - limited spaces, so join the waitlist for first dibs & early-bird bonuses Take Chris & Filly's Ending Body Burnout Assessment here Check out how you can work with Chris & Filly Functional Medicine here Disclaimer: This Ending Body Burnout Show podcast and any information, advice, opinions or statements within it do not constitute medical, health care or other professional advice, and are provided for general information purposes only. Do you struggle with binge eating, and no matter what you've tried, you just can't stop? Or maybe you've tried to lose weight by eating less and then threw in the towel because it was just too hard? This week, Jenn is talking to therapist Heather Heynen about how to make progress for the long run, not just for a short period of time. Today, Jenn is joined by therapist Heather Heynen to discuss overcoming binge eating, restricting, and yo-yo dieting once and for all. She explains some common causes behind eating disorders for many people, and the steps that can be taken to heal our relationship with food. Heather breaks down some somatic practices that you can try, as well as how to name your feelings so you are able to lower the temperature on them and recover without leaning on something else, like food or substances, to numb those feelings. She shares the valuable difference between state and story, and why changing your story can change your habits...for good! Tune in to learn more about these wonderful tools! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [6:28] How does binge eating, restricting, yo-yo dieting and anxiety all play into Healther's work today?[8:15] How often does Heather see these issues as a mental health therapist?[10:00] What are some of the biggest mistakes Heather sees people making when it comes to trying to change their behavior?[12:38] What are somatic practices and why are they so much more effective?[16:01] What is big T trauma vs. little t trauma?[20:05] Where do you start with healing your relationship with food?[24:49] How do these tools lead to long term behavior changes?[26:27] If you process your feelings more in your head, what can you do to work through it?[28:39] What is state vs. story?[32:02] How can we help children feel their feelings or tolerate distress better?[34:39] What lessons has Heather been able to learn through her solo bike packing trips?[38:24] How can you cultivate giving yourself grace?KEY TAKEAWAYS: When you learn how to feel and experience your emotions, you will no longer need other things, i.e. food or substances, to numb and avoid those feelings.Long term results come from consistency, being patient with yourself, giving yourself a lot of compassion and grace throughout the process. You either hold your emotions in your body (energy) or in your head (thoughts). Learning how to process both of them can lead to freedom from unwanted habits.QUOTES: [8:32] “The biggest disordered eating pattern is binge eating disorder, overeating, emotional eating, that sort of thing. In my practice, I do specialize in treating that, so I personally see it, but if we look at statistics, that is definitely the biggest type of disordered eating that we have going on.” - Heather Heynen“I think anybody can do anything for a finite period of time...then it becomes a function of how we can create the things we can do for an infinite amount of time." – Jenn Trepeck[13:03] “Our thoughts create our feelings, our feelings drive our behaviors, our behaviors give us our results, so you can understand why working with the thoughts and shifting to the more helpful ones is really important when we're talking about sustainable behavior change.” - Heather Heynen[13:42] “Our feelings, our emotions really are energy within our bodies, and if we don't learn how to process emotion, it gets stuck. It gets stuck within the body and it can lead to physical issues with the body, it does lead to weight gain, that's another physical component. It can lead to a lot of anxiety and depression, so processing emotions is really important.” - Heather Heynen[24:58] “Binge eating is related to emotion, meaning we are eating to try to numb, we're eating to try to change an emotion that we're feeling. We don't want to feel whatever it is that we're feeling. So if that is one of the biggest reasons that we eat, we get triggered to binge all these things and we want to stop that long term, then learning the skill of feeling our feelings, even the horrible, awful feelings, just learning to feel them and experience them, it's amazing.” - Heather Heynen[28:56] “Learning to have this more helpful narrative, helpful stories, can really help us create a state of being that's a lot more peaceful. But the other side of the coin is that if we can create a more peaceful state, then our story happens to be more helpful as well.” - Heather HeynenRESOURCES:Tickets to Salad with a Side of Fries LIVE in NYC on July 25, 2024Jenn Trepeck's Episode on Weight Loss and Wellness For RealBecome A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCES:Heather Heynen's WebsiteHeather Heynen's InstagramHeather Heynen's FacebookHeather Heynen Wellness YouTubeWeight Loss and Wellness For Real Podcast GUEST BIO:Heather Heynen is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Mental Health, Qualified Mental Health Professional, Life Coach, FMS Certified Exercise Professional, Health Coach, Podcaster & Writer. Guest: Kevin Peterson Founder Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Trauma is the center piece of mental health.  Trauma is divided into two categories.  Big T is war, assault, murder, the big stuff.  Little T would be getting yelled at, grief and loss, not having a stable up bringing, it's the cumulation of stuff over time and how you learn to respond to them.  There is a direct link from the number of trauma incidents a person experiences to chronic health issues, mental health problems, and even substance issues to name a few.  PTSD is a series of behaviors surrounding traumatic events over a period of time.  This is from people who have been into work, domestic relationships are examples of PTDS, it would fall in the big T.  People need to realize that the trauma is not your fault. https://www.chronichope.us/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you can remember your dreams, capture them and write them down, you can bring them into your therapy session, but you can also work with your partner, with your friends in a dream circle -- to unravel and unpack the meanings and the messages from your dreams -- you get a real jumpstart on moving forward in your life.“ [19:47] – Linda Yael Schiller   “Even Carl Jung famously said he needed help interpreting his own dreams. We all have blind spots. None of us can see the back of our own heads… so working in therapy or with others in a dream group is key to being able to unpack  the whole dream.” [28:14] – Linda Yael Schiller ***********************************************   SUPPORT DR. Linda integrates traditional therapeutic styles and techniques with expressive energy psychology, and body-based modalities, providing support for healing at all levels of the self: mind, body, heart, and spirit.    Her philosophy of treatment incorporates both deep healing at the source and practical coaching for daily life issues and dilemmas.   Linda also works deeply with dreamwork, and offers a group dream circle, individual consultation, and training for professionals on working with dreams. Linda's book is “PTS Dreams: Transform your Nightmares through Healing Dreamwork”.   Listen in to hear how to transform PTSD using dreamwork.  Topics We Discuss:   [0:25] Amy introduces Linda and her credentials and the modalities of work.    [2:43] Dreams vs. nightmares. They all “rinse out” our experiences, and an opportunity for deep healing from this life and perhaps previous lifetimes. Dream components: storyline, setting, and emotional narrative.   [8:07] Trauma vs PTSD. “Big T” trauma, vs. “Little T” trauma. The extent to which we're supported, believed, and accepted following trauma influences long-term effects.   [14:04] Trauma-based nightmare vs. a “normal” nightmare. Normal childhood development can bring on “normal” nightmares.   [18:21] What if I don't remember my dreams? We all have 5-7 REM cycles overnight. We all have access to free therapy if we just unravel and unpack our dreams, perhaps in a dream circle with friends.    [20:48] The fragile fabric of dreams. How to remember your dreams.    [23:13] Linda uses a layered approach to unpack and interpret dreams using the acronym PRDS. (Based on the Biblical Hebrew word Pardes, meaning "orchard" or "garden”.) Dream interpretation is very personal, not something you can look up in a book. A therapist cannot tell you what your dream means, but they can help you find the deeper layers of meaning.    [33:48] How vivid, luminous, long-remembered dreams may be considered visitations. Amy's own experiences with dream visitations.    [37:00] Amy's speed round questions: What is spirituality? What is something people don't know about you? What is one thing you're looking forward to right now? What's one thing you're deeply grateful for? What book is on your nightstand? What is your favorite spiritual or healing practice? What is the most spiritually transformative experience of your life? FOLLOW LINDA YAEL SCHILLER: Find Linda on Facebook, on LinkedIn, and at her website. In this interview, I talk with Dr. Melissa Hankins, a 17-year Harvard-trained psychiatrist and certified executive coach. We had a very open conversation about what trauma is, how it affects our lives, and what we can do to heal ourselves.  We have all experienced some form of trauma, and many times that trauma plays out in our adult lives. It might affect how we react to our spouse, how we parent our children, and how we navigate our work lives. As Dr. Hankins explained, trauma can affect us in big ways, such as anger, violence, or yelling, but also in not so obvious ways, such as perfectionism, workaholism, and lack of boundaries. Many times it's the root of our very deep wounds, but we can work to heal ourselves and become better for ourselves.  What's in the episode:  What is trauma, and how does it affect our lives? The difference between Big T and Little T trauma. What is a trauma response, and why would someone have one?  What is the key to reshaping our lives? How can we approach trauma, understand its effect, and move beyond to heal?   “Even though we are not responsible for the traumas that happened to us as children, as adults, we are responsible for healing them.” Dr. Melissa Hankins   If you enjoy this episode and it inspired you in some way, I'd love to hear about it and know your biggest takeaway. Why do we focus on the negative experiences in our lives, even when there is so much good happening? The answer: it's a biological design in our nervous system to keep us safe. If you think about it, it makes sense that it was evolutionarily advantageous to remember where pain was found, whereas remembering where you encountered joy was less essential for survival. Nowadays, we fortunately don't often have to worry about literal survival like our ancestors did, but we still carry threats to our survival ALL the time without even realizing it.  As entrepreneurs, this has an enormous impact on our businesses! Of course, your mental health and emotional wellness play a huge role in your ability to get things done in your business and your life, while feeling joyful and on purpose.  But one sneaky thing most of us don't realize is that we tend to overly identify with our businesses and think that we ARE our business, and that our safety comes from our business (newsflash: we aren't and it doesn't!).  Learning how to feel safe in our bodies and heal from past experiences is ESSENTIAL. It's the root cause of what we need to get unstuck and start taking the steps to follow our dreams, and that's exactly what we're talking about today! My guest today is Dr. Elizabeth Cohen, a clinical psychologist with over 15 years of experience specializing in the treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders. Dr. Cohen has a particular expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and has treated adults, adolescents and children with state-of-the-art CBT treatments.  The underlying goal of Dr. Cohen's practice is for clients to achieve synchronicity with the person they truly want to be.  Throughout her practice, Dr. Cohen has witnessed hundreds of clients break away from the fear, worry, and despair that had once defined them. She believes that it is a unique gift to be part of their journey towards a new, healthy and fulfilling definition of who they are.   What you'll learn in this episode: Big T and Little T trauma and how it affects all of us (even if you don't think it does!)–including how trauma impacts our businesses How to optimize your gratitude practice How to better balance your nervous system, and what flight, fight, or freeze looks like in our business lives How the known, even when it's bad, keeps us safe from the unknown how healing the trauma IN our bodies (not our minds) can help us feel safe and take the steps we need to follow our dreams Practical solutions for healing trauma in the body   Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. Arianne Scheller, Ph.D., LPCDr. Scheller has a bachelor's and master's degree in Counseling from the University of Scranton, her PhD., in Human Development from Marywood University, and is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Scheller is an adult child of an alcoholic and has worked with families dealing with addiction in various counseling settings for the last 25 years.  Dr. Scheller has a private practice where she and her significant other, Peter Smith, MS, see patients on an individual outpatient basis and is the Chief Executive Officer of Endless Mountains Extended Care. Endless Mountains is an inpatient, dual diagnosis, drug and alcohol residential facility for adult males located in the beautiful NEPA countryside on 9 acres. Dr. Scheller and her father Steve, who is in long-term recovery, built Endless Mountains together, as a family business.  Steve is a commercial builder and renovated the building and Dr. Scheller licensed the brand-new facility through the state and created the entire clinical program, starting in 2017.  In terms of treatment protocols, Dr. Scheller and her clinical team focus on a trauma-informed model of treatment which first pinpoints the patient's trauma and reason for the patient's self-medicating behavior.  Dr. Scheller is trained in EMDR and regression hypnosis which are two techniques used to address trauma.  TF-CBT and the Seeking Safety group curriculum are two other ways Endless Mountains therapists address patient trauma. After the trauma is addressed and processed, patients receive an individualized treatment plan which can include but is not limited to: 12 step work, SMART recovery groups, Life Skills, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and DBT, Coping Skills, educational counseling and inventories, nutritional counseling and exercise, Reiki, daily meditation, breathwork, medication management and MAT, and a continued focus on mental health in conjunction with physical well-being This can be a lengthy but certainly worthwhile and successful process, which is why many patients stay at Endless Mountains anywhere from 30 days to 6 months.  Dr. Scheller believes that the most important aspect of treatment is to view mental health, physical health, and addiction together in order to appropriately and individually treat each patient. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/allbetter)

Little T's ongoing nightmare started, as it did for so many Burmese people, with the violent coup launched last year by the military. Soon, the first peaceful mass protests hit the streets. Besides organizing some of the protests, the cadre of protesters Little T was involved with also helped in other important ways, such as releasing statements in both Burmese and English for various media outlets, encouraging people to join the protests through social media, and establishing safe houses. The peaceful mass protests continued for several weeks, and were gradually gaining steam when the military chose to crack down, violently. Little T was shocked that the soldiers responded with live ammunition, not rubber bullets; protesters went scattering in all directions, running for their lives, taking cover or shelter wherever it could be found. With the streets becoming so dangerous, and homes providing little safety, Little T's group has had to continue to adjust as the conflict has escalated. Many of her team having fled or gone into hiding, and the support work they can do has branched out in several ways: supporting undercover journalists, taking care of the families of “fallen heroes,” helping at IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) camps, and aiding government workers who have joined the Civil Disobedience Movement. These tense situation, constant danger and frequent moves have been very challenging for Little T's physical and mental health. At one point, soldiers raided an apartment right above the one she was staying in. It hit her that every phone conversation she had with her parents could turn out to be the last. “But then I asked myself the question,” she recalls, “‘Who asked you to join this movement?'” And she realized she had because it was the right thing to do. So she is willing to try and persevere.

Elisabeth has been an entrepreneur and mover her whole life. She experienced her own nervous system dysregualtion -- chronic pain, fatigue, migraines, binge eating. She began to understand that applied neurology could be used for so much more than just pain reduction and athletic performance, and that our nervous system drives our behavior and experience of the world. During this episode, Elisabeth takes us through what nervous system regulation even is and how dysregulation can cause things like chronic pain, fatigue, migraines and binge eating. She also gives us “quick win” tools to start to listen to our nervous system so we can start to change our response overtime. There's so many amazing nuggets in this episode, so make sure not to miss this one!   In today's episode we chat about: Elisabeth's story with the techniques that she now teaches in her own life (movement and applied neurology.) She suffered the traumatic death of a roommate and loved one, and then spent time traveling and working in a war zone in Africa.  What is “Big T” and “Little T” trauma? How are they similar, and how do they differently manifest in our body and emotions?  Dr. Quincee explains complex PTSD, and discusses how whichever modalities work best for you to help you heal from the trauma, is one to keep doing.  Find out more about Dr. Quincee's Course in Co-Dependency, along with ways to work with Sherry and Carla on overcoming codependency, dating, a break-up, healing from toxic relationships, and gaining confidence. The rest of the situation is totally out of your control. Most mothers just want to get back to where they were, but you don't want it to go back to the way it was because it probably wasn't healthy. You have to learn how to let go. Get to the point where you know it is okay if your kids never want to be in your life again.Estrangement is a Little T trauma that happens. And it stays with you whether you end up reconciling or not. Therapy can witness all your emotions. It lets them be seen, told they are okay and validated as normal. Once your emotions are validated then you can start to have some empathy and compassion for your kids, too. The age in which estrangement usually happens is when kids are in their 20s and 30s. Children are here as our teachers and we as parents are students. And we usually have that backwards. Our children are trying to become who they were meant to be. Don't give opinions unless asked. Let your adult children find their own way. Remember that estrangement can be gift. Because you can learn how to do things differently and your relationships can be so much better.Keep you eye peeled for Red Flags - When your kids ask you to stop, when there is decreased amount of communication, and when you start getting information about your kids through a 3rd party. If you know someone going through estrangement, know this is super emotional. Do not judge and let them know you aren't going anywhere. If you are estranged, maintain hope, but also let go so that you can find joy again. You are deserving of a life outside of your children. It's up to the parents to lead the way in reconciliation. We need to learn to love ourselves so we can love our children in much healthier ways.Kreed's podcast is The Estranged Heart on all platforms:  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-estranged-heart/id1589244018Her email is theestrangedheart@gmail.com or you can leave her a voice message if you listen to her podcast at her host at anchor.fm.Thanks for listening - please SHARE and RATE and REVIEW this podcast. Do you ever feel like your hard times are harder than everyone else's or not hard enough? In this episode, Gabby and Krystal talk about Little T and Big T Trauma. The smaller and bigger traumas that make up our lives. They discuss the differences between these traumas and how no matter how “big” or “small” your trauma may be it is a valid, valued, and a very real part of your life experience. They dive into parts of their own trauma and compare inactive versus active trauma. They explain the importance of not getting caught in the web of comparison. Including comparing to the way others handle hard times or even the way they handled a previous hard time. They talk about the importance of hope in both of their unique journeys. Plus how you can create hope in your own Little T and Big T traumas throughout your life.No matter how you find yourself, Gabby and Krystal want you to know no matter how big, or how small your trauma/hard time/painful experience may be, you belong here. Yet another insanely smart, insightful, brilliant woman who was put on this planet to help others, or in Britt's case, to help others' heal and move forward in their lives from whatever is holding them back. Britt Frank is a therapist, teacher, speaker, and trauma specialist who is committed to dismantling the mental health myths that keep us feeling STUCK and SICK. Her work focuses on empowering people to understand the inner mechanisms of their brains and bodies and how they connect. When we know how things work, the capacity for CHOICE is restored and life can and does change.  Plain and simple: Britt is the therapist we all wish we had. And we could have her! You can work with her through her business - the Greenhouse in Kansas City, or thx to a pandemic, anywhere virtually. I was introduced to her by my friend and previous guest Meredith Atwood of the Same 24 Hours Podcast. Meredith, I think I owe you a big one - having a personal connection to Britt is one of the highlights of my life right now. After you hear from her, I'm sure you'll feel the same. Be sure to get over to Instagram and follow her right now @brittfrank. Today I took the liberty to have a personal therapy session that I think you'll both enjoy and relate to the various angles. On that note, get ready for a good one. It's time to get Britt on the show. Notables from our conversation: Trauma definition: "There are Big T and Little T traumas. We all have trauma. It just depends on what degree." Sexual abuse: Communication is the key to helping stop or identify abuse when it is happening The Fuckery of Life: I just like this concept :) Guilt is actually important Stages of grief were actually designed for people who were dying. Britt uses the "4 tasks of grief." "The opposite of trauma is choice." "The Road to Happy starts with neutrality." Guilt is a gift. Shame is "I am bad." Guilt is "I did something bad." The floating head: The feeling of being disconnected from your body. The goal is to find happiness in our bodies. Start by assuming you're not crazy. The word perfect is a beast! What do you really know about trauma? Would you believe me if I told you that pretty much every human has trauma? Thats right, trauma doesn't only happen when you go to war or have a severe accident or loss. Chelsey Larson shares how she discovered through therapy that she was having a "trauma response" and that she had PTSD. She was shocked because she was convinced that trauma was only something that people who had been to war experienced. Since discovering this about herself, she has learned a lot about trauma and PTSD. Through this research she learned about "big T" (war, car accident, assault, etc.) vs "little t" trauma which is much more common and includes a lot of emotional trauma and can be something as small as being pushed down or bullied on the playground and no one was there to help you. Trauma can manifest in many ways: depression, anxiety, people pleasing, addiction, perfectionism, procrastination, etc. Chelsey learned that as a child, she learned to operate out of freeze (vs. fight or flight), which completely shut her off from her body. She made progress with her therapist, but it wasn't until she found somatic therapy that she felt connected to her body. Her story is incredibly moving, impactful, and educational. We all need to be able to process our traumas and learn more about them in order to live our lives fully. We also talk about...Sexual assaultBig T vs Little tTrauma responsesGenerational traumaBeing in your bodySomatic therapyDrinking alcoholDivorceMasculine/Feminine EnergyChelsey's Resources:https://www.instagram.com/c_lard/Quit Like a Woman by Holly Whitakerhttp://www.thecenterofmvmt.com/breathhouse/It's Hard Resources:https://www.itshardpodcast.comFollow It's Hard on Instagram if you don't already! Why do we focus on the negative experiences in our lives, even when there is so much good happening? The answer: it’s a biological design in our nervous system to keep us safe. If you think about it, it makes sense that it was evolutionarily advantageous to remember where pain was found, whereas remembering where you encountered joy was less essential for survival. Nowadays, we fortunately don’t often have to worry about literal survival like our ancestors did, but we still carry threats to our survival ALL the time without even realizing it.  As entrepreneurs, this has an enormous impact on our businesses! Of course, your mental health and emotional wellness play a huge role in your ability to get things done in your business and your life, while feeling joyful and on purpose.  But one sneaky thing most of us don’t realize is that we tend to overly identify with our businesses and think that we ARE our business, and that our safety comes from our business (newsflash: we aren’t and it doesn’t!).  Learning how to feel safe in our bodies and heal from past experiences is ESSENTIAL. It’s the root cause of what we need to get unstuck and start taking the steps to follow our dreams, and that’s exactly what we’re talking about today! Cohen’s practice is for clients to achieve synchronicity with the person they truly want to be.  Throughout her practice, Dr. Cohen has witnessed hundreds of clients break away from the fear, worry, and despair that had once defined them. She believes that it is a unique gift to be part of their journey towards a new, healthy and fulfilling definition of who they are.   What you’ll learn in this episode: Big T and Little T trauma and how it affects all of us (even if you don’t think it does!)–including how trauma impacts our businesses How to optimize your gratitude practice How to better balance your nervous system, and what flight, fight, or freeze looks like in our business lives How the known, even when it’s bad, keeps us safe from the unknown how healing the trauma IN our bodies (not our minds) can help us feel safe and take the steps we need to follow our dreams Practical solutions for healing trauma in the body   Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. Today is the beginning of a short series on trauma. Before you click away or skip ahead, please, please hear me out on why this applies to every single one of you and why awareness of trauma is so important. If trauma doesn't affect you directly — if you somehow managed to have such a mega-privileged life that trauma hasn't affected you — then you need to keep listening so that you can grow your awareness for the sake of your family and friends. I decided to do this now because we need more conversations about trauma, being trauma-informed, trauma-responses, generational trauma, the difference between mental illness and mental injury due to trauma, and how all of these things related to health. They relate to autoimmune issues. Trauma is stored in the body. I felt that this topic is urgent right now is because of all the trauma surrounding racism, oppression, civil rights, discrimination, and I think it's safe to say that right now a significant percentage of the US and maybe even the world has experienced trauma bubbling to the surface and spilling over as a lot of people are passionately taking action to stand up for what's right and be part of the change to begin to heal part of trauma that has been carried on for generations.   What else you'll learn in this episode: • Trauma and racist murders like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbury and many others • Acknowledging the trauma that's happening along with the rightful uprising of the Black Lives Matter movement • COVID, trauma and race • Why I need you to hear all of this no matter what your race is • Trauma is trauma is trauma. Why we need to do better at not dismissing it • What dismissive language about trauma sounds like • Examples of trauma to identify in your own life • Types of trauma (Big T trauma, Little T trauma, racial trauma, birth trauma, and ancestral/generational trauma) • PTSD and trauma Please subscribe and leave a review for the show! Today we’re talking about trauma. The concept of trauma and the discussions around it have definitely become more and more commonplace. As a society, we’re becoming much more comfortable talking about it in general. But, I think there’s still a nuance that we’re missing. When others talk about trauma, we tend to compare our trauma to theirs. We might even think that our trauma wasn’t significant enough because it wasn’t as bad as someone else’s.   So, in today’s episode, I want to talk about this notion around trauma and break down the idea of personal perspective in the context of trauma, the subjective impact that each one of us has, and how that affects you in the present moment. I’ll also be providing a bit of an exercise at the end of the podcast to help you resolve these issues related to the impact your trauma has on you. So, if you’re ready to have this conversation, I hope you’ll tune in!   IGNTD Specials: Free IGNTD Recovery Workshop New IGNTD Recovery Live Online Support Groups   Topics Discussed: [:36] About today’s episode. [1:02] Sharing a trauma I experienced when I was 8–10 years old. [3:18] Why I wanted to share this story with you all at the beginning of this episode. [3:43] Continuing the story of my trauma when I was younger. [4:15] A nuance we’re still missing when we talk about trauma: comparing our traumas to others’. [4:53] What I’ll be covering in today’s episode. [5:22] Little T vs. Big T trauma and struggling with the feelings associated with the idea that your trauma isn’t “big enough.” [6:49] The concept of personal perspective in relation to your trauma. [8:09] The second concept: the subjective impact of your trauma. [10:25] How to know if what you’ve experienced is trauma. [12:29] Here’s my exercise for you to take that personal impact this trauma might be having on you right now and ‘play’ with it. [16:35] Screenshot this podcast, tag me on social media (or DM me), and let me know what you worked on with your exercise.   Mentioned in this Episode: IGNTD Ep: “Getting Personal: A Conversation With My Sister” Room (2015 Film) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004 Film)   Find out more about IGNTD: IGNTD.com IGNTD.libsyn.com   Subscribe to the Podcast iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify Reach Out to Me! @DrAdiJaffe on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook — or email me at Info@IGNTD.com

I literally can't even right now. I present to you an interview with Seth Godin. Yes. THE Seth Godin. He's on the Faster Than Normal Podcast this week, opening up about his ADHD, talking all about how he's made his life the unbelievable success that it is, and how he's used his ADHD to his advantage. Seth Godin! I mean, this man has done for the online world what Dr. Jonas Salk did for vaccines, and I'm not blowing smoke. Seth is known WORLDWIDE for his business acumen (he started Yoyodyne and sold it to Yahoo! for an estimated $30 million...) His books, including Purple Cow and Permission Marketing, and he blogs EVERY SINGLE DAY at sethgodin.typepad.com. He's been one of my heroes and idols forever, and I'm just so honored that he agreed to join us for what may be the most informative and inspiring interview I've done on FTN to date. I'm tremendously thankful to Seth for his time, energy, and passion that you'll no doubt hear from the first second of this interview to the last. Do enjoy! In this episode, Peter and Seth discuss: How Peter and Seth first met (03:16) Seth's story (05:00) Narrative about ADHD - Hunters vs Farmers (06:55) Diagnosing kids and society that favors being the same (09:44) The concept of Big T and Little T (12:19) Elimination of choice (16:33) Shame around having ADHD (17:20) Seth's daily rituals (19:02) Triggers and will power (20:56) Advice for those who don't think they can change their lives (24:23) Links/Mentions   Links/Mentions Seth Godin (Official Site) Purple Cow (Book) As always, leave us a comment below, drop us a review on iTunes (PLEASE!) and of course, subscribe to the podcast if you haven't already! If there is one thing Buddhism and psychoanalysis can agree upon, it is this: Trauma does not just happen to a few unlucky people, it happens to everyone. Many in Western psychology teach that if we understand the cause of trauma, we might move past it, while those drawn to Eastern practices often see meditation as a means of rising above, or distancing themselves from, their most difficult emotions. Both of these tendencies fail to recognize that trauma is an indivisible part of life. Fortunately, dissenting voices occur in both camps. Resisting trauma is pointless, these voices council, and only makes it worse. Today’s presentation brings this perspective forward. Ranging from the contributions of analysts like D.W. Winnicott, Philip Bromberg and Robert Stolorow to the undercurrent of loss in the Buddha’s own biography—today’s discussion holds that not only do the ‘Little T’ traumas of early life condition how we respond to the ‘Big T’ traumas all around us but that we can use the traumas of daily life to open our minds and hearts.

F-M Experiment PODCAST Archive

I'm releasing the second to last episode of The FM Experiment today. Though I'm sorry that it took as long as it did, I wanted to save some time to build the next incarnation of DJ Joyride here in Portland. I have had one job in radio since I moved 11 months ago. It was short-lived at KZME, but it re-affirmed that I'm going to love doing radio for many years to come.I have been thinking lately about putting together a winter podcast series geared toward midwest listeners in North Dakota and Minnesota. What do you think of that idea? Let me know in a short message. If you were a fan of the show, you might be excited to visit DJJoyride.com, the new website I'm working on. I am attempting to outline the various types of projects that I was a part of in Fargo. I miss all of the people that knew me for my passions and called on me for event emceeing, computer fixing, dj'ing, racquetball, or a day on the motorcycles.Recursive art (VFP) with KNDS Underwriter, EMBIIMore: Video Feedback Photography (VFP)FM Experiment PODCAST [Airdate: October 21, 2011] (mp3 file - duration 2:00.00)view complete playlistHour 1 KRAAK & SMAAK - BUILT FOR LOVE * MAROON 5 - MOVE LIKE JAGGER (ROOFEEO & DJ A.N.S REMIX) * TEED - MOVE ON JUSTICE - AUDIO, VIDEO, DISCO * KISSY SELL OUT - BUBS & BIZZLE BJORK - MUTUAL CORE * MATES OF STATE - YOU ARE FREE (THE MAE SHI REMIX) * INFUSION - BETTER WORLD SKRILLEX - FIRST OF THE YEAR (RESTLESS REMIX) FREELAND - ROCK ON (SIRIUSMO REMIX) DRUMSOUND & BASSLINE SMITH - FREAK (DUBSTEP MIX) MAGNETIC MAN - THE BUGHour 2 RIHANNA - ONLY GIRL (MR.
