Welcome to the first episode of my new series about underearning! I will not allow you to make less than your worth. Let's make a goal for 2024 to leverage earning potential and get the salary your experience, expertise, and knowledge demands. The root cause of under-earning is a mindset block. You aren't earning more because you aren't asking for more. But breaking free from under-earning isn't just about asking for a raise. It's about confronting the fears that hold us back, like the fear of hearing "no." Rejection is part of the journey but also a stepping stone towards growth. Surrounding yourself with people who uplift and support your financial goals and building a financial safety net will also give you the confidence to ask for a raise. Throughout this series, I'll dive deeper into each aspect of under-earning and how to overcome it. It's time to stop settling and start making the money you deserve! Stay tuned for insights on these topics: [02:45] Keina's experience asking for and earning more [07:00] You don't earn more because you don't ask for more [08:17] Find your number [09:39] Fear of hearing no [13:55] You have a broke money team [17:41] Building an emergency fund Tune into this episode of Money Files to learn how to break free from mindset blocks, confront fears, and get the salary you deserve. As a coach, I love presenting new thoughts and ideas about money to my clients. In this episode, I am joined by a friend and fellow money coach, Jess. Jess helps business owners manage their time and money. Together, we share our personal journeys that led us to become money coaches and our motivations to help women gain control of their finances. In addition, Jess and I compare notes on common challenges our clients face when overcoming shame about money. We discuss why people hesitate to ask for help from a coach and advise on habits to build wealth now. We know that it can be scary and intimidating to enlist help with your finances. As coaches, we help release shame and worry around money conversations by looking at and understanding your numbers. Remember, no matter how much you make, a healthy financial mindset starts by learning what your money does for you. Tune in and listen to us discuss money as coaches. She helps her clients move towards managing their money with joy and possibility. Keina founded Wealth Over Now, where she helps her clients conquer money stress. We discuss Keina's journey from a teacher to mastering her finances and using budgeting to achieve milestones. It's essential to address lack and scarcity mindsets to understand individual money experiences. We talk about helping people redefine their relationship with money and align their spending with their values. There is no perfect time to make a money plan. The sooner you start, the sooner you'll make progress. Keina also shares some of her client success stories and how taking control of our money increases our opportunities and abundance. Episode Highlights: [03:19] Keina shares her background and how she went from being a teacher to balancing her finances and knowing her numbers. She was focused on saving money and hitting milestones through budgeting. [07:15] For Keina, budgeting and knowing her numbers was a tool for expansion, not retraction. [09:35] People have an underlying fear or flavor of scarcity around money based on their experiences and how they've been informed. We need to take into account what people have experienced when it comes to money. [11:58] Addressing the scarcity mindset includes going into why people feel that way. We need to address the underlying belief. [14:03] Flip your thoughts about the scarcity mindset and unwind what's holding you back. [15:49] Keina shares how she was able to work for herself and pay herself a salary and meet financial goals. [18:36] What would it look like to you to be good with money? People have an idea about what holds them back. [22:58] Some clients have problems with spending. Fundamentally, it's good to look at your goals and get into the space of how you envision yourself showing up financially and what your values are. [26:03] Different people have different aha moments when it comes to money. [30:27] Money touches every area of our lives. Keina loves the stories that are about life shifts. [31:14] Keina shares money narratives that she doesn't like, things like shaming and making people feel bad about money. She wants people to have a balance with money. [35:22] Don't wait until the perfect time to make a money plan. People procrastinate because they think taking control of their finances includes sacrifice. [37:08] Wealth over now is about the idea of delayed gratification and creating the life that you love. [40:04] Keina shares a financial success story of one of her clients. There is so much to gain and feel better about your money. [48:14] Take a moment to celebrate your wins and think of three ways that you've done something right with your money. In the wake of MeToo, women are increasingly speaking up against gender-based violence. But as they have grown empowered to speak, a new form of systematic silencing has become more evident: the spike in survivors speaking out has been followed by a spike in legal actions against them and the media. How many more women: have to be raped or abused before we act? need to accuse him before we believe her? will be failed by the criminal justice system? need to say something before we do something? will be sued for defamation for speaking out? will be contracted to silence? In How Many More Women? Jennifer Robinson and Keina Yoshida examine the laws around the world that silence women, and explore the changes we need to make to ensure that women's freedoms are no longer threatened by the legal system that is supposed to protect them. Join Jennifer Robinson and Keina Yoshida live in-conversation with Jane Caro for a powerful and accessible exploration of our legal systems as they break open the big judgments, developments and trends that have and continue to silence and disadvantage women. Are you a person in position to price your own work by doing 1099 work on the side or even as a full-time solopreneur? Are you undercharging and having difficulty making the amount of money that you need to make your business sustainable and your life less anxious? To charge the amount you need for business and financial success, you need to examine how you think about your services and start charging based on the value you provide, not necessarily for “accessibility” or “affordability” (because those are going to change based on each individual's values anyway.) In today's episode, I'm going to help you evaluate your mindset around your pricing system, whether you're about to start charging for your services, you've already started a side-business and need to make sure you're actually getting a worthwhile return on investment for your time, or you're a full-time solopreneur trying to make sure that your prices can sustain the life you want to live. Taking the time to evaluate your mindset around your prices, understand why you price your services the way you do, and adjust your prices based on your lifestyle and financial goals will allow you to have more control over your finances and more choices for how you spend your hard-earned time and money. In this episode, you'll learn… [04:27] Keina's experience of pricing for “accessibility” instead of value and how it wasn't sustainable for her business and the life she wanted to lead [07:40] How Keina thinks about the value she provides her clients (and the $2 million she's helped them collectively save) and why it's given her so much confidence in her pricing [14:26] The questions you need to ask yourself before you decide to start charging for your services so you can show up fully for yourself and your clients [19:07] How to evaluate your prices if you're already charging for services so you can make sure your ROI is worth it [28:02] How planning backwards from the amount of money you'd like to make and how you'd like to make that money will help to clarify how much your need to charge for your services Tune in to this episode of Money Files to examine your mindset around pricing and start charging for your services in a way that serves you AND your clients. For those experiencing ADHD, impulses and overwhelm—especially around money—can be heightened. But it doesn't have to be that way! Today, I am talking to Martha Hoffman, founder of Grounded Learning, about her experience with ADHD and money management. Martha was diagnosed with ADHD in the seventh grade, which comes with its own set of challenges. But Martha hasn't let that stop her from exploring and implementing money systems that support her needs. Prior to working with me, Martha's experience with money could best be described as random. But now, she has tools and tricks that help her know how to stay on track and when to pivot. She prioritizes what is most important in her life. Her money management works for her, not against her. ADHD can feel like an uphill battle, with money decisions often left up to chance or mood. But when you have a visual system in place and consistent time to focus on your finances, you can create a plan that works for you, just like Martha. And the benefits are lifelong. You'll have a clearer view of your overall financial picture. You'll focus more on your future self. You'll eliminate fears and doubts and be able to trust yourself around money, and it can be transformative! In this episode, you'll learn... How Martha's ADHD presents itself in her daily life [4:16] The importance of knowing yourself and your experience and how it can affect your daily life (for example, how you handle your money) [6:36] Why going inward to understand your unique needs and honoring what you're capable of in the moment can help you be your best self throughout the day (instead of beating yourself up about your perceived struggles) [9:47] Ideas for a process to get you started on identifying your personal flow and what works best for you [11:19] Understanding that a disability is something that you experience and work with, not something that you need to fix [16:13] How a mindset shift can make a world of difference [17:18] How the impulsivity of Martha's ADHD contributed to her haphazard relationship with money [19:16] How having a budget has helped Martha to plan better for future Martha [23:44] Keina's approach to helping people make a money plan that serves them and their unique needs (from budgeting for a daily coffee or lunch with coworkers to prioritizing vacation or student loan debt) [32:43] The importance of checks and balances in your budgeting [33:18] How money dates can help you stay on top of your finances [37:41] If you're ready to give yourself grace with your ADHD experiences and make your money management flow seamlessly, tune in for this week's episode. I'm too old to not know what I'm doing. Maybe you can relate and it's why I'm excited to introduce you to my client Courteney. In the past Courteney tried workbooks, reading financial books, and even worked with a financial advisor but nothing worked. She reached out because she wanted to explore a more hands-on approach and some personal shifts made it the perfect time. In our conversation, she jokes that our consult was like a lowkey therapy session. But as a financial coach, I'd say this is when Courteney experienced her first transformation. If you ask Courteney (which I did!) why she decided to work with me in my five-month partnership she'll tell you “Keina said I had to!” But what Courteney didn't realize at the time is I could see the possibilities she would gain from working with me. Now, it's safe to say she sees it too because she's increased her income by $2,100 a month, built true savings, and has a concrete plan to help her make intentional financial decisions. Tune in to this conversation to learn: How coaching has improved Courteney's mental health and help her get rid of her low-level anxiety How financial coaching was different than reading another book, buying an app, or working with a financial advisor The shifts Courteney experienced that have helped her gain financial confidence Courteney's decision-making process when she experiences an unexpected expense How Courteney increased her annual salary by $26,000 since working with me If you feel like you could be doing more with your finances this is the perfect conversation to listen to. Courteney will debunk the myth that getting your finances in order requires sacrifice. Instead, she'll show you how shifting her mindset has helped her achieve true results. I'm turning 30. I need to make more money. I want to save money. Oh and I'm getting a dog. These few short sentences best describe my client Catarina who I'm featuring in my Money Files series. When Catarina and I started working together she fundamentally knew she should be saving money but her greatest financial setback was feeling like she didn't make enough money to actually benefit from budgeting. This limiting belief kept Catarina from taking action and gave rise to financial stress. Through my 1:1 partnership, I helped Catarina learn how to budget (regardless of her income) and find the financial balance between paying her bills, paying down debt, and saving money. Week after week we worked through aligning her income with her financial values and I helped her practice making intentional money decisions so she could create room for more of the things she loved without feeling guilty about a singular purchase or decision. Listen to this episode to learn… How giving every dollar a name helped Catarina shift how she thinks about her purchases How Catarina learned to responsibly use her credit card How Catarina's been able to plan for big bills without fear and anxiety How creating a dream budget helped her redefine her financial goals If you've found yourself frustrated by the thought of budgeting you'll want to tune into this episode. Catarina will share the lessons she'd learned that have helped her experience financial balance. Visit www.wealthovernow.com to apply to work with Keina
With Keina Newell Money, mindset, and mimosas. Well, I will be the first to admit that I only reeeally like talking about two of these things. Haha. When I started my photography business, I dreaded and avoided money conversations like the plague. Clients would ask me what my rates were and I'd change the subject by asking a question: “What's your budget?” But, just because we don’t like talking about something certainly doesn’t make it any less essential to our success. If you're like me, the word money makes you want to drive your head deep into a sandbox until the discussion ends. I'm not really sure how I became so weird about money talk, but entrepreneurship has definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone there. And for today's guest, Keina Newell, she hears it from her clients allll the time. The truth is, so many of us avoid talking about it and addressing it head on. And as a result, we are sacrificing our success, our ability to set goals, our ability to confidently make business decisions and our ability to grow. It's a pretty big trade off that is definitely not worth taking if you ask me. So, let's get comfy getting uncomfy so that we can talk about the tough stuff here today. Because, as William J Brenner Jr once said, We must meet the challenge rather than wish it were not before us. So, if numbers, finances and money make you skittish, lean in. If numbers, finances, and money are one of your favourite topics, well you're gonna like this episode. No matter who you are, at the end of this episode, you will be one giant step closer to getting your money house in order. You ready for that? Let's do it. In this episode, Keina talks about: How she found herself in the position of being the amazing finances spokeswoman that she is today. 2:53What we don’t learn in school about money management. 4:38The dangerous trap that is student loans and debt. 6:00Understanding your debt threshold. 9:12 Things you can do if you are feeling anxious about your financial situation. 11:06Looking a head, dealing with uncertainty in 2021. 12:33Getting a head in your finances when you have a good grasp of your cashflow. 14:54Money Dates! Spending some quality time with your finances. 18:37Being both and employer and employee in your business. 19:33Understanding how much to pay yourself. 20:47Setting money aside to invest back into your business. 22:23Tips for how to make the most of an uncertain year. 23:42 My number one go to is to create a spending plan for your business. It is going to guide you in what you need to do in terms of your revenue, how much you can afford to pay yourself, getting you set up to pay taxes, and also invest in your business. I always say that, $1 is not $1 when you’re in business for yourself, so you have to be able to look at those numbers with a different set of eyes because money is different when it flows to you as a business owner.Keina Newell Talking about money isn't easy, I get it. It's something I struggled with and continue to work on in my own business, for sure. I'd love to tell you that you can build a thriving business by avoiding these conversations. But I would be doing you a disservice because these discussions are not only really important, but quite frankly unavoidable. I am so grateful that Keina joined us today for some enlightenment and some solid strategies for embracing the money of things in business. We also discuss the importance of asking for money and being open to receive money with confidence, as well as what it means to pay yourself first. Keina started her career as a teacher and vice-principal before transitioning into running her own business as a Financial Coach. When one of her mentors decided to change careers, Keina found herself wondering how she could rekindle the burning passion she once had when she started working as an educator.
