This week I'm highlighting an episode from the archive, with the brilliant multi-talented  Diane Nalini who is an incredibly nuanced jazz singer, and composer. She performs in 4 languages and teaches jazz ukulele as well. I hope you'll join me in my fascination with the incredible range of Diane's interests and expertise. Besides being a phenomenal musician she also is a Rhodes scholar with Phd in Applied Physics from Oxford university and presently works in environmental science policy for the Canadian government. Not only is she a great lyricist, but she has also written songs inspired by great literature including Shakespeare, in jazz, blues, gospel, folk and bossa nova styles. During this conversation, she performs some of her original songs for us.  We recorded this in early in 2022, and as I release this again in 2024, I want to remind you that we're in Season 4 of this podcast, and if you love jazz singers, you may want to check out my episodes with Kellylee Evans,Ineke Vandoorn , and Renée Yoxon, among well over 100 episodes you may have missed. In this episode we hear the incredible award-winning singer Kellylee Evans talk about her life and some of the challenges she has faced in her life, including two near-death experiences. She talks about her upbringing, her journey to jazz, her creative process,  and much more. She is such a wonderfully engaging person, and I hope this episode will help listeners feel inspired by her story. We talk about her new album Greenlight and many of her other projects. Near the end of the episode at 43:00 we are gifted with an incredible a capella performance of one of the most-requested songs in her repertoire, Feelin' Good by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse.  All her current projects are here: http://www.kellyleeevans.com/ Like all my episodes, this is also a video, linked here to the transcript and bonus episodes: https://www.leahroseman.com/episodes/e4s2kellyleeevans Buy me a coffee? https://ko-fi.com/leahroseman Thanks so much!   Kellylee Evans: “And then I was interested at that time in minority rights and representation and in legal philosophy. And so I was doing my masters of arts in law. My parents, their hope I think would've been just like most immigrant parents a lawyer, doctor, engineer. And I tried to... I wasn't trying that hard though to really be a lawyer. I really was hiding in school. My goal was to just keep my head down and stay here as long as possible. Because school is awesome, and if you figured out the path, if you know what to do, you attend, you finish the assignments, you hand them in. You do the reading, you get a mark, everybody's happy. That's something that's very doable, I think if you can just follow the script. But real life outside of school is scary. And the music industry, what's the path?” This interview series follows my curiosity about fellow musicians: how did they get to where they are today, what are their perspectives on a life in music? The format is in-depth conversations prepared with lots of research and many episodes also feature the guests playing music. I speak to musicians playing in different styles of music, different instruments, and with really different careers. In Season One,  I spoke with quite famous soloists like violinists James Ehnes and Kerson Leong, and also with erhu player Patty Chan and  composers Hooshyar Khayam  and Roddy Ellias about creativity, carnatic violinist Subhadra Vijaykumar about the Indianisation of the violin, violinist Alicia Svigals about the Klezmer revival, trumpet player Karen Donnelly about women in the brass world,  and so much more,  with 20 full episodes, and many bonus episodes.  Season 2 has a similar diversity of guests, with many topics covered including personal struggles, the entrepreneurial aspects of the music business, advice on how to practice and how better to tap into creativity.  Please follow and stay notified of all the new episodes!  Photo credit: Phantom Productions --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/leah-roseman/message

Two weeks to go until SXSW and what is this?!  It's not a SXSW preview!  Yeah I know.  I decided instead to do a SXSW Recap podcast.  Since I imagine most of you aren't going, it will probably be more interesting to hear about what I actually went to and liked rather than just what I think might be good.  For those of you that want a preview though, don't fret.  The SXSW Torrent did actually come so you can check that out.  Or, you can check out what I've put together on Spotify (link).  I have put together two sets of playlists for you.  One set, sorted by genre, is the complete listing of all the artists performing at SXSW (that were available on Spotify).  It's something like 1500 artists.  I, of course, have listened to (or will have in the next two weeks) all of them and that is the second set of playlists, my selections.  It is from this far paired down group that I will be building my schedule.  So head over to Spotify. Check it out.  And follow the playlists so you will get notified when I update them. For the other nerds out there, you might be interested to know that I actually wrote a Matlab script to crawl the SXSW webpage and populate a spreadsheet with artist, genre, and hyperlink to their SXSW page.  I then used this spreadsheet to check off which artists I had added to Spotify playlists and which songs I had listened to.  The making the playlists part did kind of take forever.  Next year I'm gonna learn some JSON so I can just use the Spotify API.  If I actually get that going, you can expect Spotify playlists from tons of different music festivals to start showing up.  I'll keep you posted. As for this episode, well, you've read enough of my writing already.  Just listen.  One correction though.  It's only been 13 years, not 14.Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,AaronTracklist (these are links to buy the tracks)1.Pine Needle Tea by Chadwick Stokes on The Horse Comanche2.Dyin Day by Anais Mitchell on Young Man In America3.With You by Roméo Testa on The End4.I Loved You by Alice Russell on To Dust5.Open by Rhye on Woman6.Warm Water by Banks on Goddess7.Open Air ft Joyce Wrice by TOKiMONSTA on Desiderium8.Green Garden by Laura Mvula on Sing to the Moon9.Don't Wait by Mapei on Hey Hey10.And So We Dance by Kellylee Evans on I Remember When11.Betray My Heart by D'Angelo and The Vanguard on Black Messiah

Back with another one pretty quick.  Actually I guess the release date isn't that quick but I did record it a week after I recorded the last one.  Why the rush?  Well first off, I just have too much music to share with you.  Secondly though, it's SXSW and Coachella time so you know what that I means.  I have absolute heaps of new music to get through.Things are gonna run a bit different for SXSW this year.  The torrent is no more.  So instead, I got a Spotify account and am making playlists, sorted by genre, of all the artists performing at SXSW!  Yes it's a ridiculous task but I consider it a public service.  Tell your friends.I am then also listening to all songs and making a second set of playlists of my picks.  So, get on Spotify and check it out.  You don't need to pay if you don't mind listening on shuffle.  My username is ActiveListener.  I've already got a playlist up for my top 60 (out of 160) Coachella artists. If I have enough time, I will make a preview podcast before SXSW.  That's the plan anyway, so look for something coming in the beginning of March.  In the meantime, watch the Spotify playlists grow and evolve. And oh yeah, guess I haven't really introduced the present podcast at all.  Well...  It's all remixes.  Except for one that's not.  Just listen.  It's one of the more varied podcasts I've made and I gotta say, I really like it.Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,Aaronwww.activelistenerpodcast.comTracklist1.Lose Yourself by Kellylee Evans on I Remember When2.Runnin (Machinedrum Remix) by Kelis3.Gangsta (Deejay Theory remix) by Kat Dahlia (Free Download)4.Baby (Ju$tin Be Beurre For The Lulz Remix) by We Sink on Ju$tin Be Beurre For The Lulz (Free Download)5.Me & U (VILLAGE Bootleg Remix) by Cassie (Free Download)6.The Key (ft.
