Davide DiRenzo is one of the most versatile and in-demand drummers in Canada, with an equally strong profile in the jazz, rock, pop and R&B scenes coast-to-coast and beyond. From there, he also records and sends drum tracks to artists and producers all over the globe. Davide has performed and recorded extensively around the world with a wide range of artists including two time Grammy award-winning Cassandra Wilson. Other acts he's performed and recorded with include Chaka Khan, Mariah Carey, Holly Cole, Feist, Kevin Breit, and just recently recorded and co-wrote three songs on Molly Johnson's new album, “Meaning To Tell You” where he had the pleasure of working with multi grammy award-winning and internationally celebrated producer/musician, Larry Klein. He has won six Juno awards to date, including two in 2007: one as a member of jackSoul (Best R&B Recording) and one as a band member with Tomi Swick (Best New Artist). He also received a National Jazz Award nomination the same year for Jazz Drummer of the Year. In this episode, Davide talks about: How he creates dialogue with audio engineers Deciding how many options to provide in terms of mics/tracks How in-ears have affected how we experience our own playing Finding the volume where your drums and cymbals start sounding bad Working with producer Larry Klein on Molly Johnson's record I Been Meanin' to Tell Ya Submitting to the collaborative process and letting go of some control Collaborative producers vs. impresario producers

Larry Klein has had his mitts on so many amazing records over the past 40 years, but is still a relatively quiet, behind-the-scenes kind of musician. He is a four time grammy winner as a producer, and has made records for artists like Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Holly Cole, Madeleine Peyroux and Tracy Chapman. I think the first time I ever saw his name was on a cassette I had of Shawn Colvin called “Fat City”, and then I kept seeing his name pop up on cool records over and over again. Larry started out as a bass player in California, and landed a gig pretty early on with jazz legend Freddie Hubbard. He toured with Freddie for years, and then slipped successfully into the session world. As a bass player he played on so many classic albums like “So” by Peter Gabriel, “Building the Perfect Beast” by Don Henley, Robbie Robertson, Tracy Chapman's debut album and many more. He eventually landed a session with Joni Mitchell, which led to him playing on and producing a string of her records, starting with “Wild Things Run Fast” in 1982, right up through “Travelogue” in 2002. They were married and divorced in that window of time as well. His production work is always deep and sonically interesting. He has a real jazz mentality towards making pop records, which I love. There's alot of live performance based takes, mixed with rich sounds and experimentation. Gaining the trust of Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter is no small feat, but Larry did that and produced records for those jazz legends! In recent years, Larry made a great record with Herbie Hancock of Joni Mitchell tunes called “River: The Joni Letters”, and during Covid, he made a record in a similar vein called “Here It Is”, a Tribute to Leonard Cohen. It's basically an insane house band backing up artists like Iggy Pop, Norah Jones, Peter Gabriel, Mavis Staples and lots more doing Leonard Cohen tunes. I should also mention that we just ran out of time on this one, hence the abrupt ending. Larry had a limited window and I lost track of time, so we just kind of had to cap it mid-stream, but we got into tons of cool stuff anyway! I don't think Larry is on the road at all any more, so you can't catch him live with anyone currently, but you can get info on him and news on his latest projects over at larrykleinmusic.net — Please enjoy my conversation with Larry Klein! We feature some of our favorite superhero women as they tell their origin stories in this episode. We go to small town Oklahoma with Holly Cole to see the devious *spark* of creation she had at a young age and then travel to Haiti to ask Christele Parham how she got her name. In between, we interview Wayne Woodard about his businesses and how being an entrepreneur is kind of like being a superhero. The Heartbeat of Georgia is hosted by Julia Morrison and Koryn Young and episodes are produced by Storytellers Macon based off of the limited stage series in partnership with The Grand Opera House.
Time for an all-singing, no-dancing, some joke-telling show featuring four female vocalists. Look sharp, folks. We have an actual, one-degree-of-separation Randy guest today. David Piltch has played bass for the greats (Ramblin' Jack Elliott, k.d. lang, Holly Cole, Blood Sweat & Tears, and many many more). More germane to this show, he is the bassist on Randy's 2017 album "Dark Matter." He talks about accompanying Randy at the Hollywood Bowl, why a bassist is like an engineer, and why B. Fiddle isn't getting the frequent flyer miles that it used to. David comes on to talk "Sonny Boy," Randy's fictional account of the two Sonny Boy Williamsons. Then we take a break and I bring on James Johnson, known to our KGOU listeners as Hard Luck. As Oklahoma's premier blues historian, James separates the fact from the fiction on Sonny Boy. Then we come back to David, spin the wheel, and talk shop. Guys, this episode is a keeper.

David Piltch, the bassist on many of my favourite records from the last 15 years joins me on the show this week. David grew up in Toronto in a musical family - his Dad was a session musician around the city and on CBC. David and his brother Rob grew up playing jazz around town, and David eventually left Canada for Los Angeles to find studio work. His body of recorded work is epic, starting in Canada with Mary Margaret O’Hara and KD Lang and includes recordings along the way with Joe Henry, Holly Cole, Solomon Burke, Salif Keita, Allen Toussaint, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Newman, Elton John and many more. His path is an intriguing one, and many of his stories and experiences are so relatable to all musicians. In my experience of doing this podcast, no one has been so frank, honest, and able to paint a picture of the sense of dread you feel when you’re on a gig and know that you really don’t know how to play the music properly (C’mon we’ve all been there at least once!). His trial by fire attitude imbued him with a musical sense that has made him one of the most sought after bassists in music today. We sure blabbed alot, but it’s all so fun and facinating that I’m just making a big ol’ 2-part episode out of this one. Dig in and enjoy! I’m encouraging listeners to call in this season, and at this point I’m hoping to hear from people about their experiences, good and bad, with starting to play or experience live music again. Join in and leave a message at 615-375-6318 anytime! If you want to skip straight to the interview, it starts about 10 minutes in. Enjoy Part 1 of my interview with David Piltch, and please subscribe to the podcast! Part 2 will come out next week. Our new website is now up at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com

Please go and listen to part one of this episode first to get the full story! Kevin Breit is a humble Canadian treasure. And a hell of a unique guitar player. And a nice feller. I’ve known Kevin for about 20 years at this point, although I haven’t seen him much over the last 10, sadly. When I first got to know him, he was at the tail end of a run in Norah Jones’ live band, and had played on most of her recordings as well. He was bowing out of that gig to be able to spend some more time with his young family, but was already a seasoned vet in the studio, having played on records for folks like Rosanne Cash, k.d. Lang, Hugh Laurie, Cassandra Wilson, Holly Cole, Jane Siberry, Serena Ryder, Taj Mahal, Irma Thomas and countless others. As impressive as that list is, it was his quirkier solo records that I found most interesting. His guitar playing had a big influence on me, particularly his unusual voic eon slide guitar. His string of under-the-radar albums that he seemed to be churning out almost for his own amusement were some of the coolest music I knew of. From the slide guitar based “Empty” to the mandolin orchestra of “Maybelle” and the reckless abandon of “Folk Alarm”, not to mention the inventive “Supergenrous”, I loved all of it. Kevin is well known in his native Canada, but also well-respected internationally, as his session track record suggests. With multiple awards including a Maple Blues Award, Gemini Award, National Jazz Award, Canadian Folk Music Award and two Juno Awards for his recordings, as well as for his work on albums that have a collective 10 Grammy Awards, Breit’s unparalleled creativity is infinite. Breit’s latest release, the 11-track instrumental “Johnny Goldtooth and The Chevy Casanovas” features his interpretations of a mythical character in a twang world. Kevin Breit is a humble Canadian treasure. And a hell of a unique guitar player. And a nice feller. It’s Crimbus! Thrill to old faves like The Waitresses and Slade, jazz classics from Oliver Jones, Holly Cole and Bela Fleck, get depressed in the middle bit with a bunch of downer songs, and dive deep into traditional dungeon synth with Krampusnacht. First all-women’s Lilith Fair concert opened by Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan. God created Eve only after Adam’s first wife, Lilith, stomped out of the Garden of Eden to protest Adam’s order that she submit to him. At least, that’s the story according to the Rabinic Talmud. Many centuries later, when promoters told Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan that a women’s concert would never sell, she stomped off to create one anyway. She called it the Lilith Fair, tested the event in 1996, and it opened full-tilt on July 5, 1997. Lilith Fair featured some of the word’s biggest-name female vocalists such as Sheryl Crow, Nellie Furtado, Holly Cole, Bonnie Rate, Sinéad O’Connor, Queen Latifah, the Dixie Chicks and the Indigo Girls. It was such an enormous success that it toured numerous American cities for three years. Since then, women performers and all female bands, sometimes know as “girl bands” have prospered throughout the world of entertainment. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Jeremy Nicely of Evil Czech and Holly Cole of New Holland Brewing Company have visited us so often in Indy we kind of feel like family. So it was a must to finally travel to Mishawaka, Indiana and visit with Jeremy in his home at Evil Czech Brewery and Public House. We will be visiting New Holland this summer. Joining us on co-hosting duties this week is John Bahler of The Stampede String Band. We get down and dirty early in this one as we toast the start of the show with a lovely glass of whiskey from Journeyman Distillery which is always available at Evil Czech. Lots covered this week from hearing about Jeremy and Holly’s visit to Colorado for the World Cup of Beer 2016, upcoming events and brews, bad jokes, John’s first job shoveling shit, cannibal sandwiches, and Dougy Fresh realizes he was subjected to child exploitation and illegal child labor as a young boy. Many Evil brews were harmed in the making of this episode including: Luscious Mounds, a coconut, oatmeal milk stout and a delicious Farmhouse Black IPA. And be on the hunt for another killer beer from the Dragon’s Milk family, the Coconut Rum Dragon’s Milk and Hopronix, the Double IPA made with those beautiful mosaic hops. We do tend to talk highly of all the Evil Czech brews almost weekly on the show, but you must get to the brewery to not just enjoy the on tap line up, but some really stellar food as well. So sit back and enjoy this week’s ride and be on the lookout for the upcoming show with the rest of the boys from The Stampede String Band as we highlight their upcoming show at the newly renovated HiFi in Fountain Square. Na zdravie! Shout Outs this week include: Vegetable Buddies; Tappers Arcade Bar, Twincade; Jeremy Brown; Fiddlers Hearth; Wild Rose Moon; Twisted Crew Brewing Company; Indiana Whiskey Company; Moxxie; Tracksuit Lyfestile; Otis Gibbs; and People’s Brew http://evilczechbrewery.com/ http://www.journeymandistillery.com/ http://newhollandbrew.com/corp/tours http://www.thestampedestringband.com/
