How Stewart Goodyear Balances a Career as Concert Pianist, Composer, Arranger — and the Royal Conservatory's First Artist in Residence

Some classical musicians choose to follow a specific lane throughout their career, either as an orchestral musician, a chamber player, or a concert soloist. But Stewart Goodyear can't confine his career to one lane — he demands an entire highway. As a concert pianist, composer, arranger, and improviser, Goodyear has built one of the most multifaceted careers of any musician today. His recitals thoughtfully place works of Debussy and Liszt next to his own compositions and new pieces from Jennifer Higdon and Anthony Davis. And his ever-expanding discography shows incredible depth — from the complete concertos of Beethoven to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Goodyear's transcription of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker. This eclectic approach to music-making is the result of an artist who finds inspiration in everything life has to offer. "The more I'm not boxed in, the more there's room to create and think outside that box," Goodyear says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. In this conversation, we discuss the many exciting projects on the horizon this season — including his second year as the inaugural Artist in Residence at Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music, the world premiere of his Piano Concerto with the Grammy Award-winning Albany Symphony Orchestra, and the Toronto premiere of Callaloo, Goodyear's suite for piano and orchestra that pays homage to his Trinidadian background. Plus, he shares more about the ways positivity and optimism fuel his wellness routines, the similarities he sees between cooking and orchestration, and how finding a great restaurant in New York City can be as simple as "letting your feet take you where you want to go." — Classical Post uncovers the creativity behind exceptional music. But she's never been one to be pigeon-holed. She lives her life outside the box and that makes her difficult to define. And that's OK with her because she purposely defies definition. Her Top 5 debut album in 2017 helped establish her as one of the premier young singer-instrumentalists in the country. Her participation in Dave Koz's #1 album, DAVE KOZ and the Summer Horns: From A to Z in 2018 helped cement her position. But it was her own #1 album in 2019 that really helped Aubrey Logan become a household name with music aficionados around the world. Shawn is a Composer, Arranger, Producer, Performer, and Educator, who plays several instruments ranging from strings, wind to the piano and traditional Chinese. Shawn has composed a lot of music for TV shows, short films, and video games and is a sought-after artist in the industry! Shawn was 13 when his dad brought him a guitar as a Christmas present. He wanted him to get over addictive gaming. But that decision by his father changed his life altogether. The joy of having learned an instrument well drew Shawn into doing more. He started learning more instruments. From trumpets to the piano, Shawn has mastered all ticks and tingles!Though he's learned multiple instruments in his musical journey, Shawn finds string instruments to be his thing. When asked where he gets this genius from, Shawn says, “My musical taste has been primarily shaped by pop music.” He says that sometimes, you needn't mix many different chords to make the music sound engaging. A single chord could also make some great music to listen through.Shawn also talks about YouTube as being more of a social platform than a video platform.
