Casual Trek - A Star Trek Recap and Ranking Podcast

SHOW NOTES It's November, so our Casual Explorers have novels to write, but we also want to bring you the innovative Casual Content you crave, so we're going to go through all of Short Trek in a two part binge. We've make some new friends alongside Tilly as we discover that Ice Cream isn't a universal constant like Sweedish Meatballs (Babylon 5 fans will get that one) in Runaway while in the far-future, things feel a bit like the opener to most RPGs with FPS mechanics in Calypse. After that, things go a little bit folk horror for the Kelpians as we get Saru's secret origin in The Brightest Star while Miles becomes disturbingly obsessed with saying 'Jippers on a Beach' like he's Harry Mudd in The Escape Artists. Next episode will see us wrap up the Short Excursion with the second season of Short Treks!- 8:01- Runaway (ST)- 19:21- Calypso (ST) - 29:21- The Brightest Star (ST) - 39:17- The Escape Artists (ST) Talking points include- Harlan Ellison's agressive tendencies, The Exorcist II: The Heretic, Wes Anderson and The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar, Charlie hates Maroon 5 (But when pressed on this, he simply replied 'Who Doesn't?'), we had a LOT of music on this one, Asteroid City, folk horror, Bioshock and RPGS with First Person Shooter Tendencies, Classic Doctor Who fans having very obsessive tendencies, every time Charlie talks about Delgrassi Junior High, he paints an ever more disturbing image of a Canadian Teen Drama written and directed by Sam Peckinpah, Quinton Review's Long YouTube Videos about Carly 101 and VicTORIous, Rick and Morty and apparantly the British being unable to pronounce anyone's names correctly. Pedants Corner: Miles is editing the two Short Trek episodes and that has inspired him to take some of the editing load off Charlie giving them both one episode a month to edit, there may be a few spotty edits, but there we go. The Quinton Review discussion went in a few tangents dealing with personal stuff that both Miles and Charlie decided were best left out of the episode itself. This week on Episode 518 of Priority One: Comic-Con@home brings us new trailers for Star Trek: Prodigy and Lower Decks, and Saru and Stamets look ahead to season four of Discovery.  In gaming news, we go back and forth on the Courage-class coming to Star Trek Online, and some new shiny textures for your favourite Romulan Captain. TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Comic-Con@home - Lower Decks By Cat Hough As we anxiously await the premiere of Season 2 of Lower Decks, we were treated to a brand new trailer last week during Comic-Con@home. Based on the trailer, Season 2  has all the things we loved in Season 1 plus so much more. How much more? The best villains! Including Cardassians, Pakleds, Ferengi, Nauciscans, some giant slime monster and the incomparable Jeffrey Combs makes an appearance as an evil computer. We also see a new Tamarian crew member who had this to say when welcomed to the bridge: “Rapungee - when he joined the Seven.” https://youtu.be/IxdKo0eXUKY Tom Paris also shows up in Season 2...in commemorative plate form, though. Also, an interesting side note in the news: Robert Duncan McNeill was invited to reprise Tom Paris for Season 1 of Picard but, due to scheduling conflicts. he was not able to make it work. So maybe we'll see more Tom Paris at some point. Season 2 of Star Trek: Lower Decks starts August 12 on Paramount+. Comic-Con@home - Prodigy By Jake Morgan But Lower Decks wasn't the only Star Trek series to get some Comic-Con attention. We were also treated to our first look at Star Trek: Prodigy! In the 52 second trailer for Prodigy's inaugural season, we're introduced to the main cast: Dal, Gwyn, Zero, Rok-Tahk, Murf, and Jankom Pog, The main cast also features the stunning new-to-crew U.S.S. Protostar (which looks like a cross of the Intrepid- and Rhode Island-class) and the timeless Captain Katherine Janeway–who reminds us that ”we've only just begun.” https://youtu.be/987jSJZQxTs During the Comic-con@home panel, the creators, director, and cast–including Star Trek royalty Kate Mulgrew–joined the ever-entertaining Jerry O'Connell to discuss the newest Star Trek series. EP Kevin Hageman pointed out that this would be the first Star Trek series ”that's actually going to be seen through the eyes of characters who are outside of Starfleet.” In discussing Prodigy's place in Star Trek mythos, the Hageman brothers recognized that this would be the “Little Brother or Little Sister” member of the franchise, but wanted to “punch up.” Kate Mulgrew reiterated the sentiment, saying “Children are very astute. You've grasped an essential component of the childlike imagination, which is extraordinary perception. They need to be grounded while taking flight at the same time. And this–you have achieved.” The trailer is a must watch, and the panel is super-entertaining and informative. Stamets And Saru In Season 4 By Rosco McQueen Everyone's favorite Kelpien [the other white meat–Ed.] has been on the interview circuit in the past couple of weeks, with Doug Jones talking about the release of Discovery Season 3 on DVD.  In an interview with SYFY Wire, Jones spoke about Saru's heartbreak at the revelation that a fellow Kelpien was responsible for the Burn. He also confirmed that filming on Season 4 continues in Toronto and, even though Saru's left the command chair, he still has plenty to do. "Damn, Starbase 80?!?" Image: Michael Gibson/CBS, via SYFY. “After we got home to LA during hiatus last year, I called Michelle Paradise myself and said, 'Should I expect to go back for Season 4? Because, they left me on-camera teaching Su'Kal the ways of the Kelpians.' She said, ‘Oh, no, you're back. You're back.' But the question will remain that Starfleet does not strip you of your rank, so I am still a captain. Where do they plug me in? That's the question.” In an interview with Screen Rant, Discovery actor Anthony Rapp spoke about the cast and their Dungeons & Dragons sessions, and rejected claims he'll become the series villain. You may suspect that's where the relationship is going–at the end of Season 3 we saw Paul Stamets not being particularly friendly with the newly-minted Captain Michael Burnham. When you find out you have to be the party healbot. Image: ViacomCBS, via ScreenRant Rapp was quick to shut down the villain rumors. “No, no. He's like a consummate professional. He hated [Captain] Lorca but he still did his job. And he doesn't hate Michael. He was just hurt. It was a different situation. Ultimately, he's a smart person and understands [why Michael became Captain] but it still stung, the way that it happened.” Quick News Roundup Here are a few headlines that we didn't discuss but might interest you. What is it like to host Jeopardy!? According to LeVar Burton, it's scary.  But he said once he focused on making the most of his hosting chances and stopped trying to “be as smooth as Alex” that he was able to relax more and be his wonderful self. We hope you all have had a chance to Trek out his episodes.  Marina Sirtis spoke about the on-again off-again idea of a Captain Worf series, throwing her support behind it. She explained she would love to be a small part of it, and the potential of having a series focused on the Klingons. And at the recent Comic-Con@home event, the Stargate Atlantis reunion panel had some small Trek nuggets for aspiring sci-fi actors. Robert Picardo spoke about the fan crossover between Star Trek and Stargate, and how his previous acting roles meant he was better prepared for science fiction roles. His advice: get your feet wet in some other acting jobs before delving into the world of sci-fi. STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds Courage Of Your Promotions By Cat Hough https://youtu.be/-hUBGqt1f5g Star Trek Online continues to look to the future–or at least continues to look to Discovery when picking new promo ships. This week, the 32nd century Courage-class Command Science Destroyer joins the list of ships available as a R&D and Duty Officer pack reward choice. This ship switches from Science Mode to Tactical Mode by reversing direction. In Tactical Mode, you get access to a Commander Tactical station, the Coherent Integrity Projector Experimental Weapon is enabled and you get a boost to hull capacity. It's a Science ship–but it's also a Destroyer so it's equipped with 4 front and 3 aft weapons [or is it 3 front and 4 aft?–Ed.]. The starship trait, Directional Bias, provides bonus Exotic Damage or Healing when using bridge officer abilities based on where you are attacked. Overall, this ship looks to provide a lot of build options for those lucky enough to win one. Now does that make it any easier to parallel park, though. Image: Cryptic Studios. Let Freedom BLAST By Cat Hough Starting today through August 2nd, the Freedom-class Exploration Frigate, otherwise known as the U.S.S. Franklin from Star Trek: Beyond will be available in the Lobi Store. Plus! Everything in the Lobi Store is 20% off. The ship's unique console is the interesting VHF Disruptive Transmission. When activated, it will blast high frequency radio waves towards nearby foes, dealing significant electrical damage and boosts your turning radius while it's active. And it can be equipped in any console slot, on any ship.  D'deridex? Don't Mind If I Do By Cat Hough Some breaking news for Romulan ship fans [we know you're out there–Ed.]:  the D'deridex and Scimitar classes are freshly remastered starting today. Just when you were getting bored with those ships' looks, they go and make them all shiny. Thanks to Donny "Viper" Versiga, a ship artist at Cryptic for posting some excellent before and after images–it's so nice to see those ships get some love.  https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1420100137716621315?s=20 It's Canon: Donny Loves Connie By Rosco McQueen Speaking of Donny, he recently spoke with the folks at MassivelyOP about ship design. They covered off his favourite captain (Kirk) and his favorite starship (Connie refit) in short order, then went on to talk about the design process for Star Trek Online. Donny explains that fresh designs are from the incredibly talented Hector Ortiz, with as many as 20 designs put together as the team refines the looks of a particular ship. 3-D models are created, then once the final ship design is selected, that model is sent to the Ship Team to build.   so i herd u liek starships. Image: Cryptic Studios, via MassivelyOP. He also spoke about the updates to older Starship models, which has become a large part of the game. Donny explains that as PC/console hardware power has increased over the years, the amount of detail STO can provide per ship has increased, sometimes three times as much detail as was previously seen on starship models.  It's a great look behind the scenes at the process.

Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ:  What was your favorite news to come out of the SDCC@Home? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Star TrekUniverse Panel SDCC 2020 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qwmWA59QcQ What a strange year 2020 has been. The US and Iran almost started World War III, there’s a global pandemic, giant murderous hornets - aptly named Murder Hornets - were big news until they weren’t. Civil unrest, an economic rollercoaster, an oily island that drives men mad, social distancing. Wild stuff. So in this weird-and-wild world of social-distancing and goatees-for-all, what of convention season? You may be surprised to learn conventions have, in fact, continued - Sort of.  While some promoters have postponed their events until smack-dab-in-the-middle of the predicted second-wave of Covid-19 *Cough*Creation*Cough* Others have decided to take their stage digital - including arguably the biggest Geek-Con in all the world - San Diego Comic Con. This week, the mega-event streamed its much anticipated panels via the internet, teasing fans everywhere with what is to come in their favorite fictional universe - and ParamountCBS’ Star Trek set the pace. On Thursday July 23rd, the showrunners and stars of Star Trek’s newest offerings pulled up their favorite chair and shared thoughts about what has happened - and what is to come - in their respective Star Trek offerings. We are going to cover SDCC20 a little different than we have in previous years because - well - it was a little different. Star Trek: Discovery It seems only apt that we cover Star Trek’s first “NuTrek” offering - Star Trek: Discovery - at the start. Before the Q&A, Discovery’s showrunner Michelle Paradise led Executive Producer/Director Olatunde Osunsanmi  and the cast of Discovery season two -including most of the bridge crew as well as Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn - in a table read of the Discovery Season 2 Finale, “Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2”. The read was edited, so it played very tightly, and was interspersed with early special effects layouts and storyboards of some of the action sequences. It was a fun introduction, to be sure, and it was great to see the acting chops of the cast sans costumes, sets, and makeup. But what about Trek nuggets? Oh - there were trek nuggets. While the Q&A was interesting - revealing a POSSIBLE return of more Kelpians, and verification of a stronger romance between Stametts and Culber - possibly the biggest Discovery Season 3 news dropped a few days after the panel. On July 27th, the team released a short video of Burnham holding a tattered Federation flag, which ended with a panel that read “Star Trek: Discovery. New Season October 15”. We have a release date! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYtzFoJqL2s Star Trek: Picard Ending the Star Trek Universe Panel, but coming in number two here on Priority One, was the cast of Star Trek: Picard. Frankly, very little was said about the upcoming season, and it was - in large part - a rehash of things we’ve already covered. The cast was in awe of Sir Patrick, it was nice for the Next Generation alumni to reunite, both Sir Patrick and Brent Spiner were reluctant to return to the roles...et cetera, et cetera.  As always though, it’s fun to watch the banter and admiration of the cast, and Sir Patrick even earned a couple of new nicknames - SPS and P-Stew. Despite the lack of new information coming from the virtual panel, there was some fun news that came a few days BEFORE the convention - Star Trek: Picard is getting a physical medium release!  Announced on July 21st, Picard’s premiere season will be available on DVD, BluRay, and Limited Edition Steelbook on October 6. Included in the release will be the first ten episodes of the season, documentaries, commentary, deleted scenes, and the Short Trek “Children of Mars”. At the time of this writing, the DVD can be preordered for 37.34 US dollars and the BluRay for 47.99 US dollars at Amazon.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azicjg_WlPM Star Trek: Strange New Worlds As we mentioned in our first story, the upcoming “Strange New Worlds” leads joined the Discovery cast for a table read and Q&A. As expected, they discussed how Discovery’s second season adventure would affect their characters in the upcoming series - but we’ll get back to that.  Leading into the table read, Star Trek’s Meta Captains - Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin - delivered a bit of excitement. In introducing Strange New Worlds, Kurtzman revealed that the team was working on the series as far back as last SDCC. Kurtzman then gave some progress on where “Strange New Worlds” was, production wise. Meanwhile, back at the panel the trio of Mount, Peck, and Romijn discussed Discovery’s effect on their upcoming roles. Star Trek: Animated Finally, the panel covered Star Trek animation! The Star Trek: Lower Decks panel was moderated by series creator and showrunner Mike McMahon, and started with a clip. It begins, much like the teaser, with Boimler’s “Captains log” being interrupted by the loud and spunky Ensign Mariner - who turns out to be celebrating shore leave with a bit of libation. The comedy is cartoony, but with a Star Trek backdrop! After the clip, we are introduced to the voice talent, each describing their characters, what they love about the show, and a BLEEP ridden segment that tones out the spoilers they’re spilling. You can Trek out 16 new images of the series at Treknews.net! But we said the panel covered Star Trek ANIMATION, not Star Trek LOWER DECKS. So what does that mean? Well, we finally know a bit about the upcoming Nickelodeon series! After Kurtzman discussed Strange New Worlds, Kadin talked a bit about the new animated project “Prodigy”. In an announcement on Star Trek.com ”Nickelodeon and CBS Television Studios today officially revealed the title and logo for its all-new animated series Star Trek: Prodigy, which follows a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation.”. The show is vaguely expected in 2021. Star Trek Supports NAACP Legal Defense Fund The leadership, cast, and crew of Star Trek spent a good deal of time talking about Star Trek’s importance, and what makes it relevant today - Inclusion, Respect, Equality. Prior to the Discovery panel Sonequa Martin-Green announced an important message regarding the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. If you wish to donate to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, please follow the link. On July 22nd, the Reno Gazette Journal published an interview with the 83-year-old actor, activist and Star Trek icon George Takei about his voice acting role as criminal patriarch Masumi Arakawa in the upcoming Yakuza: Like a Dragon video game. Takei explains that his motivation for the role comes from his fascination with modern yakuza culture and its samurai roots, saying “Here is this man who, at his core, is a decent human being who lives within that culture and expects that same kind of fidelity. Some aspects demand inhumane fidelity to that code and it's a shared understanding”. Takei also talks about his early life as a Japanese-American in the midst of World War II, and how his admiration for the benshi narrators of silent film lead to his careers in voice acting, theater, and far beyond the stars. This week on Episode 471 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out' San Diego's Virtual Comic Con including Discovery's hope, Lower Decks clips, Progress on Strange New Worlds, and P-Stew! In Star Trek gaming, we share with you which game developers are taking actions for a more equitable future. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! The US and Iran almost started World War III, there's a global pandemic, giant murderous hornets - aptly named Murder Hornets - were big news until they weren't. This week, the mega-event streamed its much anticipated panels via the internet, teasing fans everywhere with what is to come in their favorite fictional universe - and ParamountCBS' Star Trek set the pace. On Thursday July 23rd, the showrunners and stars of Star Trek's newest offerings pulled up their favorite chair and shared thoughts about what has happened - and what is to come - in their respective Star Trek offerings. We are going to cover SDCC20 a little different than we have in previous years because - well - it was a little different. Star Trek: Discovery It seems only apt that we cover Star Trek's first “NuTrek” offering - Star Trek: Discovery - at the start. Before the Q&A, Discovery's showrunner Michelle Paradise led Executive Producer/Director Olatunde Osunsanmi  and the cast of Discovery season two -including most of the bridge crew as well as Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn - in a table read of the Discovery Season 2 Finale, “Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2”. Frankly, very little was said about the upcoming season, and it was - in large part - a rehash of things we've already covered. The cast was in awe of Sir Patrick, it was nice for the Next Generation alumni to reunite, both Sir Patrick and Brent Spiner were reluctant to return to the roles...et cetera, et cetera.  As always though, it's fun to watch the banter and admiration of the cast, and Sir Patrick even earned a couple of new nicknames - SPS and P-Stew. Despite the lack of new information coming from the virtual panel, there was some fun news that came a few days BEFORE the convention - Star Trek: Picard is getting a physical medium release!  Announced on July 21st, Picard's premiere season will be available on DVD, BluRay, and Limited Edition Steelbook on October 6. This week on Episode 470 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out’ what James McAvoy plans to do with his scent, Lower Deck’s announcements, Discovery Discoveries, and what Star Trek-adjacent projects to keep an eye out for - today and in the future! In Star Trek gaming, we share with you which game developers are taking actions for a more equitable future. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ:  Who would be your choice to play a young Picard? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan James McAvoy Wants to be Picard If you could pick ANY actor to play young-Jean-Luc Picard, who would it be? David Tristan Birkin played a de-aged Picard in the TNG episode “Rascals” and Tom Hardy had a go at Picard’s dastardly clone in the forgettable “Star Trek: Nemesis”.  Corey Stoll from “House of Cards” has the look and David Tennent of “Dr. Who” has the accent. BUT - according to one Picard-hopeful, HE is the only choice. Who would that be?  Young-Professor X portrayer, James McAvoy! Sitting down virtually with Late Night host Jimmy Fallon, James McAvoy responded to the question of whether or not he would consider playing a young Picard and later painted a picture with his words regarding his scent - and Sir Patrick Stewart’s face. Have a look at the video below to see what we mean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf1zYk8D8hc&start=179 “Lower Decks” Hypes for Release All aboard, the “Lower Decks” Hype-train is leaving the station! Star Trek’s first animated series in 46 years is set to debut on August 6th, and the folks at CBS want the world to know about it. Last week, we got our first look at the trailer for the series - which we talked about in episode 469 of Priority One - and this week, we get four new screenshots - and a new recurring character announcement! On July 15th, three of the four new photos were released through fan sites like Trekmovie and Trekcore, and feature our scrappy heroes at work and at play. The fourth screenshot came on July 20th, with the exclusive Deadline announcement that “Black Monday’s” Paul Scheer would play Lt. Commander Andy Billups, the chief engineer on the USS Cerritos. In the still, we see the chief engineer, a smiling middle-aged man with a mustache, poking away at an engineering console while speaking to Ensign Rutherford. In regards to Scheer, the actor-comedian isn’t new to voiceover work, having done voices for Cartoon Network’s “Adventure Time” and Netflix’s decidedly-adult “Big Mouth”, as well as Fox’s Seth McFarlane helmed “American Dad” among others. Star Trek: Discovery at Virtual Trek Con The cancellation or postponement of conventions in 2020 due to Covid-19 is a thing, but it has started a bit of a movement - the Virtual Con. This week starting on July 15, Deep Space Nine Star and 7th Rule Podcast host Cirroc Lofton spearheaded the free Virtual Trek Con - a five day “convention” that hosted stars and crew from across the Star Trek multiverse. On Sunday July 19th, Moderator Ryan Husk sat down with stars of “Star Trek: Discovery”, and though no big spoilers were dished, we did get a few interesting nuggets for the dipping. Husk was joined by Doug Jones, as well as Linus’ David Benjamin Tomlinson, Siranna’s Hannah Spear, and Dr. Pollard’s Raven Dauda. In an exchange with David Tomlinson - who has played Klingons and Kelpians among others - Doug Jones revealed that everyone’s favorite Saurian will be back for season 3. In speaking about Linus’s eating habits, Tomlinson and Jones tease a little about Linus’s screen time. Hannah Spear, who plays Saru’s sister Siranna, MAY HAVE hinted that Siranna could return in another iteration of Star Trek - think Strange New Worlds or Section 31.  The panel is just under an hour, and really highlights the love all of the people involved with Discovery share for one another. You’ll also get some insight into how Siranna’s character was created, Tomlinson’s love of prosthetics, and how Raven Dauda would love to be the Chief Medical Officer of Discovery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kLwF1sHyKQ Trek Stars Outside of Trek It’s been a while since we’ve had some new Star Trek. We’re not complaining - really - but the final episode of Picard aired back in March and since then - nothing. Well this week saw a bunch of news cross our feed about Star Trek stars in other upcoming roles or mediums, so we figured we’d share them with you now so that you have them for, you know, the next five month drought. A new documentary featuring Nichelle Nichols’ role in NASA’s recruiting program - which focus on women and people of color - has struck a distribution deal with Shout! Studios. The film, titled “Woman in Motion”, will feature interviews with friends, colleagues, experts, and Star Trek stars. It’s expected to release in 2021. If you’re itching for something this moment, and are in the mood for a bit of a downer, HBO’s documentary Showbiz Kids is out now - with stories from Wesley Crusher himself, Wil Wheaton. According to HBO’s website description ”Showbiz Kids offers an unvarnished look at the high-risk, high-reward business of working as a child actor in the entertainment industry. Written and directed by former child actor Alex Winter (Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, The Panama Papers), the film chronicles the shared experiences of prominent former child stars and the personal and professional price of fame and failure on a child.” Looking for something a little lighter and don’t mind waiting about a week? The long-awaited “Unbelievable!!!!!” is set for it’s streaming release on August 1st. The Sci-Fi comedy sports a “Team America” style marionette, Snoop Dogg - and over FORTY Star Trek alumni! To go along with the release,  there will be events all day - we’ll post a link in the show notes if you want to trek them out. And finally, a little casting news, Star Trek’s Kelvin Spock - Zachary Quinto - has been cast in the Amazon Prime animated series “Invincible”. Based on the graphical novel of the same name, the story follows the son of Earth’s greatest Superhero. As the young man begins to manifest powers, he starts his own adventures, to varying degrees of success. Quinto will play a superhero named Robot, an ally to the protagonist Mark Grayson. “Invincible” is from the same author that wrote “The Walking Dead” graphic novels, and the series is set for release at the end of 2020. So there you have it. Bookmark our show notes so you don’t forget! Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Star Trek Timelines Event: “Sto’Vo’Kor Lost” “Who overcomes [b]y force, hath overcome but half his foe.” Of course, you’ve not experienced Milton until you’ve read the text in the original Klingon. Brush up on the classic literature of Qo’noS during Star Trek Timelines’ “Sto’Vo’Kor Lost” Skirmish Event, running from July 23rd through 27th. Dr. Edward La Forge joins the Timelines lineup as this event’s 5-star Ranked Reward crew, with high event bonuses coming from the new 5-star Mother L’Rell, new 4-star Groom Worf, and returning 4-star Q Junior as event crew. And what is a Skirmish Event without the armies of heaven to command: with the 2-star Klingon K’Vort Bird-of-Prey, 4-star U.S.S. Defiant, and the new 5-star IKS Negh’Var, the brazen throat of war shall never cease to roar. QAPLA’! The Continuing Mission, With Terms & Conditions By now Star Trek Timelines players have no doubt been confronted with Some Kind of In-Game Pop-up Anomaly, asking them to accept publisher Tilting Point’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. On July 17 Wicked Realms announced the switch from former owner Disruptor Beam’s terms, noting that players would have to accept the terms to continue playing. The post acknowledges recent concerns with the game’s Offer Wall feature, and a review of what advertising partner ironSource’s SDK collects when the game is launched on Android (remember, the Offer Wall is indefinitely gone from iOS). However, any offers you-the-player accept via the Offer Wall “will take place outside of the game and outside the control of Tilting Point or ironSource, and you may be requested to share additional information on a voluntary basis to the third party managing that offer, and such information will be subject to that third party’s privacy policy”. So, you know, not our circus, not our monkeys, caveat lusor, etc. etc. RETROTREK The world of Star Trek gaming is vast and varied. We want to spotlight some previously released Star Trek games. Whether to celebrate a classic, or make a new introduction, we’re slingshotting around the sun for our new regular segment, RetroTrek. And now, here’s Anthony with another board game about building your own crew deck. This week, we’re trekking out Star Trek Deck Building Game! We’ll look at the Original Series deck, the Next Generation deck, and still more Next Gen decks!

The film, titled “Woman in Motion”, will feature interviews with friends, colleagues, experts, and Star Trek stars. It's expected to release in 2021. If you're itching for something this moment, and are in the mood for a bit of a downer, HBO's documentary Showbiz Kids is out now - with stories from Wesley Crusher himself, Wil Wheaton. According to HBO's website description ”Showbiz Kids offers an unvarnished look at the high-risk, high-reward business of working as a child actor in the entertainment industry. Written and directed by former child actor Alex Winter (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, The Panama Papers), the film chronicles the shared experiences of prominent former child stars and the personal and professional price of fame and failure on a child.” Looking for something a little lighter and don't mind waiting about a week? The long-awaited “Unbelievable!!!!!” is set for it's streaming release on August 1st. The Sci-Fi comedy sports a “Team America” style marionette, Snoop Dogg - and over FORTY Star Trek alumni! To go along with the release,  there will be events all day - we'll post a link in the show notes if you want to trek them out. And finally, a little casting news, Star Trek's Kelvin Spock - Zachary Quinto - has been cast in the Amazon Prime animated series “Invincible”. Based on the graphical novel of the same name, the story follows the son of Earth's greatest Superhero. Bookmark our show notes so you don't forget! Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Star Trek Timelines Event: “Sto'Vo'Kor Lost” “Who overcomes [b]y force, hath overcome but half his foe.” Of course, you've not experienced Milton until you've read the text in the original Klingon. Brush up on the classic literature of Qo'noS during Star Trek Timelines' “Sto'Vo'Kor Lost” Skirmish Event, running from July 23rd through 27th. Dr. Edward La Forge joins the Timelines lineup as this event's 5-star Ranked Reward crew, with high event bonuses coming from the new 5-star Mother L'Rell, new 4-star Groom Worf, and returning 4-star Q Junior as event crew. And what is a Skirmish Event without the armies of heaven to command: with the 2-star Klingon K'Vort Bird-of-Prey, 4-star U.S.S. Defiant, and the new 5-star IKS Negh'Var, the brazen throat of war shall never cease to roar. QAPLA'! The Continuing Mission, With Terms & Conditions By now Star Trek Timelines players have no doubt been confronted with Some Kind of In-Game Pop-up Anomaly, asking them to accept publisher Tilting Point's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. On July 17 Wicked Realms announced the switch from former owner Disruptor Beam's terms, noting that players would have to accept the terms to continue playing. The post acknowledges recent concerns with the game's Offer Wall feature, and a review of what advertising partner ironSource's SDK collects when the game is launched on Android (remember, the Offer Wall is indefinitely gone from iOS). However, any offers you-the-player accept via the Offer Wall “will take place outside of the game and outside the control of Tilting Point or ironSource, and you may be requested to share additional information on a voluntary basis to the third party managing that offer, and such information will be subject to that third party's privacy policy”. So, you know, not our circus, not our monkeys, caveat lusor, etc. etc. RETROTREK The world of Star Trek gaming is vast and varied. We want to spotlight some previously released Star Trek games. Whether to celebrate a classic, or make a new introduction, we're slingshotting around the sun for our new regular segment, RetroTrek. And now, here's Anthony with another board game about building your own crew deck. This week, we're trekking out Star Trek Deck Building Game! We'll look at the Original Series deck, the Next Generation deck, and still more Next Gen decks!

Why the Trek: A Star Trek Discovery Podcast

Zach complained and his wish was granted: an episode free of spore magic! David discusses the tragic, but beautiful ending to Pike's arc, as illuminated by this episode. We wonder if all might not be as it seems vis-a-vis the Squid Robots vs Red Angels, similar to the Kelpians and Baul. We loved the finale to this episode!

This week Matt and Ken take on those who don't think Season 3 should happen and those who don't think this true show is Star Trek. Also this week Saru does what Matt wanted and saves his people, it just doesn't go the way he thought. We discuss the similarities of Fantastic Beasts and and Discovery. Matt throws a theory which then turns not to be true about the Kelpians. And lastly, not suprisingly we deep dive into the Prime Directive. All this and, as always, more, more and more!

Wade and his regular crew of scabs are joined by journalist and legit Star Trek expert, Ryan Britt (@ryancbritt on twitter).   Is this an objectively good episode of Star Trek?  Ryan brings his insight as to how Discovery fits into canon. Theories and predictions are discussed. Dangling Spocks. Pike Marie Kondo-s Starfleet. Cronenberg Horta. Meta thinking Saru and Doug Jones. It's nice to not easily predict Star Trek Discovery. A Gotham Problem?   Sean Connery and what could have been. So about the JAHSep... "Inserting" Michael into Spock's story, if you know what I mean... And finally, a possible theory about the Kelpians.   Check out Ryan's writing on Den of Geek, SyFy Wire, and Fatherly. Or, why not buy his book, Luke Skywalker Can't Read?
