In this episode, Jordana Barrack, Executive Director of the Mighty Arrow Family Foundation, offers a compelling perspective on how funders can rethink philanthropy by centering empathy, trust, and long-term relationships in their work. The foundation, established by Kim Jordan, co-founder of New Belgium Brewing Company, is a family-led philanthropy focused on climate change, food systems, land and water stewardship, and social justice. With an annual disbursement of approximately $3.5 million and a planned sunset in 2040, the foundation aims to deploy its resources intentionally and meaningfully during its limited lifespan. A central focus of the conversation is the foundation's recent initiative, the Mighty Partners Report, which reflects a deep learning journey undertaken to better understand the lived experiences and needs of its grantees. Rather than adopting standard philanthropic norms, the foundation opted for direct engagement and honest dialogue with its partners. Through surveys and interviews, they uncovered high rates of burnout and a strong desire among grantees to connect and collaborate with one another—insights that shaped the launch of two new grant programs. The first, Nurturing Leadership Grants, offers flexible capacity-building support specifically focused on people, rather than projects, within grantee organizations. The second, Transformational Capacity Grants, is structured around referrals—grantees are invited to nominate other organizations that might benefit from similar support. This peer-referral model not only decentralizes the application process but also broadens the foundation's network in a way that is organically diverse and mission-aligned. Barrack emphasizes the value of proximity to grantees and fostering candid, human connections. Simply asking nonprofit leaders how they're doing on a personal level, she notes, can often be unexpectedly powerful, especially in a sector where funders rarely engage with grantees as whole people. The foundation's approach underscores the idea that genuine partnership requires both trust and a willingness to step away from traditional, transactional funding models. You guessed it .... we made a 2020 Rugby PickEm mash up. Bt runs back the best moments in a year that was undoubtedly one of the more challenging, and gloomy years that we can remember. We started with a season preview where Kim Jordan graced the studio and the crew ran through each MLR teams' hashtags, mascots and other ridiculous pre-season banter items. Kim's presence that night was sublime, and the crew thoroughly enjoyed what would be one of the few recording sessions before the pandemic took hold here in the US and lockdowns began. Next we included the last couple of live voicemail shows with Bt and Tommy NoPiks. Listening back to the final week 5 MLR PickEm almost drew some nostalgic tears, knowing the season would be called off later that week. There are times when we record an interview and hang on to it for awhile. This was the case with Ben Pinkelman, Ke'Von Williams and Logan Collins debating "what are the best cross-over sports for rugby"? Ke'Von is never short on confidence, and he's convinced that Decathletes are the proper fit for rugby cross-overs. As the games dried up across the globe, we got creative with our content as FloridaMan Dev and Tommy NoPiks led an intriguing discussion on the best rugby movies. 5/5 Rucks! With the first annual Major League Rugby draft approaching, we decided to call our old friend Cole Zarcone who was coming off an amazing Senior season at Eastern Washington after spending the 2019 summer playing 7's with the Denver Barbarians. We knew he'd get drafted and sure enough, the San Diego Legion and Zack Test scooped him up with the final pick of the draft. As New Zealand prepared to relaunch their 2020 Super Rugby Aotearoa season, Mickey Bateman dropped in the studio to spread his kiwi knowledge for the Rugby PickEm faithful. Months down the line, the MLR released their 2021 schedule and Bt, Uncle Johnny & Tommy NoPiks did their "Way Too Early" 2021 playoff PickEm. Harpo drops by in Denver on his way to Missoula, and Logan Collins wraps up the show with "The User's Guide to Helping Your Rugby Community". What a strange year it was. PICKEM!

In 2018, New Belgium produced just under 850,000 barrels of beer, a decline of 11% from 2017 levels.Coca-Cola Files Complaint Against Mark Anthony’s ‘White Claw Hard Seltzer Surge’ Trademark ApplicationCoca-Cola filed a complaint with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last week claiming that Mark Anthony Brand’s application to register “White Claw Hard Seltzer Surge” infringes on its Surge brand of citrus sodas.Mark Anthony Brands filed an application with the USPTO on May 24 to register the brand name White Claw Hard Seltzer Surge, a product that has not yet been announced.According to Coca-Cola’s complaint filed November 20, White Claw’s proposed use of the Surge name is similar in “sound, appearance, connotation and commercial impression.”Surge soda launched in the 1990s as a competitor to Pepsi’s Mountain Dew brand and was discontinued in 2003. At an amount of approximately $10,000 per year, these funds will go directly toward helping SCW preserve the quality of the drinking water in Sebago Lake.Portland draws its water from Sebago Lake, located just northwest of the city. One out of six Mainers (more than 200,000 people) and Maine’s fastest growing businesses depend on Sebago Lake for their drinking water. The lake supplies 22 million gallons of clean drinking water per day. That clean water is largely due to the forests that surround the lake—84% of the 234,000-acre Sebago watershed is covered by forests. The goal of the SCW and Allagash partnership is to conserve more forests surrounding the lakes, streams, and rivers that feed Sebago Lake. Currently, only 10% of Sebago watershed forests is permanently conserved.Paul Hunt, the Portland Water District’s Environmental Services Manager said “Sebago Lake is so pure that it is one of only 50 public surface water supplies in the entire country that require no filtration before treatment. “The forests are the natural filtration plant for Sebago Lake. Keeping it clean and naturally filtered like this means that our water is safer, less expensive, and tastes better than if the lake were degraded and we had to filter it artificially.”Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Support ACS In NYC Marathon“32K In 64 days” - I signed up for the NYC Marathon through the American Cancer Society and I am aiming to raise $32,000 ($3,200 Minimum X 10X) - please follow link below to donate what you can - $25, $50, $30K! - Onward... - Here is link –http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=94035&pg=personal&px=49477898&fbclid=IwAR2mBEvhF1wMA_BbHPhkavichNSFrE9Y9gi2RVZzfQ_4Da5Sht7gvH9rY_k*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? Within Reach — Exploring new markets and winning new fans for craft beer

Good Beer Hunting

At GABF in Denver this year, we teamed up with the folks at New Belgium to host a conversation called Within Reach to talk about exploring new markets and winning new fans for craft beer. Hosted at the Source Hotel, where New Belgium has a new, small brewery, a diverse panel of industry professionals gathered to talk about diversity and inclusion, which are central to this effort. With an industry that’s largely still white and male, it’s become increasingly clear there’s a need to invite more people to participate. We wanted to look at this effort, which is both old and new, from a variety of perspectives. We sat down with Kim Jordan, co-founder of New Belgium Brewing, which was founded in 1991 when most marketing in beer was from macro brewers, and most of it was marketed to men using women as props. Over more than 25 years, Kim has been a seminal voice in an industry that’s starving for women in leadership positions. Her experience in the beer industry sets the foundation for how far we’ve come, and how far we still have to go. Alongside her is Kimberly Clements, whose career led her into a leadership position with her family-owned Budweiser distributor in Arizona. She now runs a consulting firm called Pints that works with distributors and brewers of all sizes as they look to grow audiences and reach. Her perspective on how these companies are thinking about the diversity of markets, or not, is a compelling peek behind the scenes on the narrow way craft beer is still defining a customer base with implicit and sometimes explicit bias. Vansana Nolintha is the co-founder of Brewery Bhavana in Raleigh, North Carolina, an immigrant restauranteur alongside his sister Vanvisa and his friend Patrick Woodson, who uses hospitably to create a dialog about inclusion and belonging. How this plays out in the craft beer niche in North Carolina is fascinating: it involves hiring, training, and vision-setting for a staff that’s doing more than serving pints in a taproom, but using exceptional beer as a catalyst for change. And Dominic Cook, founder of Beer Kulture, which looks at the world of beer through the lens of a community that’s been neglected - and in some ways explicitly alienated - from the promise of craft beer. He has worked as a wholesaler rep, but also as a social influencer to bring beers to occasions and communities that either believe they don’t like beer, or for whom access to craft beer is limited. In doing so, he’s instigated a stark dialog around exclusion in craft beer, and how ignoring the problem will be at the industry’s peril. He also has some advice for craft brewers that cuts through the noise and posturing that’s so common on the topic, and which usually results in brewers explaining why they can’t really do anything about the issue. Together, this group did a phenomenal job of covering a lot of ground. And the way in which they built on each other’s experiences made this one of the most rewarding conversations we’ve been lucky enough to lead. Thanks to New Belgium for helping shape the conversation, and bringing us all together. Thanks to the Source hotel for hosting. And thanks to the audience, which engaged in a genuine, thoughtful exchange of ideas on a topic that’s in everyone’s best interest. A more inclusive craft beer industry is a better industry across the board.

Photo by Clara Rice When Dave McLean moved to San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood after college, he was chasing one particular thing: the Grateful Dead. McLean was a small part of a wave of hippies, idealists, and rock mega fans who came to the city at the same time for a similar reason, but unlike many of the others, Dave actually stuck around. And then he built a business here: the Magnolia Brewing Company. With the nearly 20 years Dave was at the helm of Magnolia, he became part of the fabric of the modern Haight District. For a neighborhood that is synonymous with counterculture and the “summer of love,” turned out Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin, that’s something. Magnolia was, and is, a stalwart brewpub in a historic neighborhood of a rapidly changing city. But no one is immune from the effects of a changing economy. An investment in a difficult property in another evolving neighborhood proved too far ahead of its time, and Magnolia faltered financially. As a last resort, Dave called Kim Jordan and sold the business to New Belgium, Dick Cantwell, formerly of Elysian, and Oud Beersel of Belgium. It was a deal that was deeply personal for Dave. Ultimately, on as good as terms as possible, he left Magnolia, but not before setting out on a new venture: Admiral Maltings. The founder of another longtime brewery in San Francisco, Ron Silberstein of ThirstyBear Organic, knew Dave’s affinity for quality malts, and tapped him to help him establish a new craft malt house in Alameda —- the first of its kind in California. Brewers flocked to it because the offer was notable: local farm grown barley, sent to a local malting facility, sold to local brewery to be purchased by a local drinker. I’m not sure Dave would regard it as a renaissance for himself, but all things considered, it’s an incredible next step. And don’t count him out for any new breweries down the line. The Bay is, after all, the home to progress and reinvention.

Jeff had been inspired by the fruit and spice-infused beers he had tasted on a bike trip to Belgium, so they named their company New Belgium, and launched a beer with the whimsical name, Fat Tire. Today, New Belgium Brewing Company is one of the largest craft brewers in the U.S., and Kim Jordan remains one of the few women founders in a male-dominated industry. Recorded live in Boulder, Colorado.

Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Together with co-founder Kim Jordan, they traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire won fans with its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness. Fat Tire: Pairs well with people. Summary: Bill is designed to make the beer label approval process more streamlined My Analysis: The amendment seems to have removed the physical sample requirement (unless specifically asked for by liquor commission). It also makes it so in-state brewers do not require federal approval if only selling in-state. It, however, removed the clause originally in the bill that stated that federal label approval for out-of-state brewers was enough for NH. House result: Passed House on consent calendar- 3/8/2017. Next Step: Off to the Senate HB 161 - relative to beverage sales at farmers' markets. Summary: This bill requires beverage manufacturer licensees to pay the beer tax on beverages sold at farmers' markets. My Analysis: The legislators forgot to require the normal tax on these sales before, although brewers have been voluntarily paying tax anyways it seems. Next Step: Was referred to Ways & Means committee (guess it was in the wrong one originally), public hearing was 03/07/17. Next step unknown, but seems likely this will pass unopposed. HB 228 - relative to transportation of alcoholic beverages by a minor. Summary: This bill allows minors to transport alcoholic beverages in a vehicle or boat when accompanied by certain family members. My analysis: Adds stepparent, grandparent, or legal age sibling to parent, legal guardian, or legal age spouse for the law. Amendment makes age 25 of sibling. House Result: Passed by the House by a voice vote on 1/26/17. Next Step: Senate Judiciary committee hearing 03/14/2017, Room 100, SH, 09:15 am HB 549 - relative to beverage vendor fees. Summary: This bill modifies beverage vendor license fees My Analysis: This would create new fee structures for breweries from out of state wishing to get licensed to sell in NH. Sales numbers are in-state only. Amendment lowered the top tier from 25,000 to 15,000 The text of the new fees (previously fees were $720 for under 200 barrels and $1920 for all others): 1  Fees; Beverage Vendor License: (b)  Beverage vendor license, a fee representing the total per manufacturer assessments of: (1)  $100 for each manufacturer with sales of less than 10 barrels per year; (2)  $500 for each manufacturer with sales of 10-1,000 barrels per year; (3)  $5,000 for each manufacturer with sales of 1,001-50,000 barrels per year; (4)  $15,000 for each manufacturer with sales of more than 50,000 barrels per year; House result: Passed House on consent calendar- 3/8/2017. Next Step: Off to the Senate. HB 600 - relative to requirements for certain alcoholic beverage licenses. Summary: This bill eliminates restrictions on obtaining a liquor license and being employed by a licensee based on felony convictions and character. My Analysis: Pretty straightforward in the summary. House result:  Passed House on consent calendar- 3/8/2017. Next Step: Off to the Senate. HB 152 - relative to wholesale distributors of alcoholic beverages. Summary: This bill clarifies direct shipper laws as they relate to shipments of beer. My Analysis: An amendment has taken the teeth out of this one and it really no longer applies to direct shipping. Now it adds a mandate to the wholesaler license that requires them to attempt to get beers that retailers are looking for. House result: Passed House on consent calendar- 03/08/2017 Next Step: Off to the Senate. HB 353 - relative to sales of beer in refillable containers. Summary: This bill authorizes the sale of beer in refillable containers and establishes a universal growler.. My Analysis: Would allow licensees (bars & restaurants) to fill growlers from taps for to go sales following certain rules. Amendment removes clause requiring amber glass and eases restrictions for on-premise to qualify as eligible, as well as removing mandatory training class. House result: Passed House by voice vote on 03/08/2017. Next Step: Off to the Senate HB 496 - increasing the beer tax. Summary: This bill increases the beer tax. My Analysis: Changes the tax per gallon collected by wholesalers (or nanos) on breweries from $0.30 to $0.50. House result: Inexpedient to legislate. Dead bill. HB 98 - relative to brewpub licenses. Summary: This bill authorizes brew pubs to manufacture alcoholic cider.
