Herlinda Heras Herlinda Heras calls into the studio from the Aro Rojo 2024 in Mexico, to speak to Steve Jaxon on Brew Ha Ha today fro Monterrey, the capital of the state of Nuevo León. She is a judge in a competition called the Aro Rojo 2024. Aro Rojo means "Red Ring" and their logo is a dragon in the shape of a ring. There are both professional and home brew competitions with a total of 715 beers in the competition. There are judges from all over the world, including Charlie Papazian, the godfather of home brew in the United States. Pete Schlossberg from Pete's Wicked Ales is also there as a judge. About a quarter of the judges are women, this year. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Getting Through Customs with Beer Herlinda brought a lot of beers to show at the presentation, two suitcases worth. She always brings beer wherever she travels and she has never had issues at customs. This time the passport folks waved her through but the Mexican National Guard stopped her. They were looking for beer, and she was not supposed to have more than three liters. But they didn't open the other suitcase and they eventually let her through. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. She explained that the beer she had may have been over three liters. When she said they were commercial samples and not for sale, they let her pass. Monterrey is also the home of the largest beer factory in the world. Visit Homerun Pizza, home of the Knuckleball! A lot of people know that in 1978, the Carter administration loosened federal laws about homebrewing with a stroke of the executive pen that has been partially credited with launching the craft brewing industry. But far fewer know what that pivotal moment was actually like. So we called someone who did: Charlie Papazian, the iconic founder of both the Brewers Association and the American Homebrewers Association. Listen in as Charlie takes us back to the pre-Carter era of bland adjunct lagers, clandestine garage brews, and the early, barely legal days that would eventually bloom into the American craft brewing industry as we know it.

Davvero sconvolgente.

Aaron walks us through how he got into brewing, what he learned, and how he helped pilot his business through the COVID19 crisis. Learn more about Aaron and his experiences by tuning in. --- Listen to the podcast here: Steering A Business Through A Pandemic Setback With Aaron Uhl Colorado has been my home for years. For anyone who knows what it's like here, it is longer than most people. There are a lot more new entries and a lot of people are moving here. The area of Colorado, especially the Front Range, Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins, is known for the craft brewing scene. We have a pretty robust scene in that particular sense of one of 5 or 6 places where there is a lot of people doing a lot of experimenting with different types of beer and formulas. My guest is Aaron Uhl, who started his own brewery. He is the owner and head brewer along with 6 or 7 other roles. We talked a little bit about the idea of wearing many hats with Uhl's Brewing, for anyone interested is located near the corner of Arapahoe and 55th on the East end of Boulder.--Aaron, welcome to the show. Thank you for having me. Tell me a little bit about Uhl's Brewing, your story, and what you are all about. It all started with a passion for homebrewing, competitions, and loving craft beer, in general. When I first started brewing, it was simply because I couldn't get a certain beer from beer trading because beer trading was a big thing back in early 2010 and on. With that, I whined a little bit. My girlfriend bought me the book that everyone gets, The Complete Joy of Homebrewing by Charlie Papazian. That nudged me along to do my first brew with a friend who had an all-grain system. He showed me the ropes on the first brew. After that, I was at home homebrewing. There was a tile in the kitchen that was available on my side of the table. There was going to be a fermenter there. By the end of the first year, I had the beer that I couldn't trade for a mimic of it, an Imperial stout aging in a five-gallon bourbon barrel in my basement. That was in 2012 or so. Fast forward to 2018, I won a lot of awards at different competitions across the state and region. I ended up winning regional gold medals for an Imperial stout and Imperial IPA with AHA competition that gets run annually. That's the best of the show for me of all things, also a trip to the Great American Beer Festival with Jeff Griffith from FATE Brewing at the time, who is now at Twisted Pine. The eventful night led me to sign a contract with another brewery to start the brand in 2018 of February at the Fresh Hop Competition. I ended up winning about 5 or 6 awards and then took best to show. The funny thing was people that I would assume to talk with dropped a tank into their system and started brewing. They showed up to the brewery where the competition was having its final rounds of judging and award ceremony. They were like, “What are you doing here? We are honestly not to ask you. You own a brewery.” They live in the area and wanted to check it out. I told them that I had about eight different beers in the competition and they should sit down at the pro-am table, hang out for the award ceremony, and try the brewery's beers that they were at. They sat down and their eyes were raising every single time I won an award because when I talked to them, that's what I wanted to start doing, brewing one and done recipes and easy IPAs. They are like, “Everyone thinks they can do that, but can you brew anything else other than that?” It landed in their head that, “If this guy is winning medals across broad spectrums from lager to British bitters to smash American sours,

Finding that right one to hit your lips is just heaven, which is why it just made so much sense to sit down with writer/director Christo Brock about his new film 'Brewmance' which is on VOD platforms now. The American Craft Beer movement began with a group of restless homebrewers searching for something genuine and flavorful. Today it’s evolved into a redefinition of beer and an international cultural phenomenon. That uniquely American spirit of rebellion and innovation survives in two groups of homebrewers from Long Beach, California who are looking to open their own breweries and bring their beers to the world. These include a Christian father-son team who grew close over making beer and a retired rock star looking for the “quiet" existence of a brewery owner. With the insight and commentary of legendary brewers Ken Grossman (Sierra Nevada), Fritz Maytag (Anchor Brewing), Charlie Papazian, Vinnie Cilurzo (Russian River), Sam Calagione (Dogfish Head), Jim Koch (Boston Brewing) and others, 'Brewmance' reveals the soul of craft beer in the heart of America. Iron Hill has the impressive distinction of winning medals at the Great American Beer Festival for 20+ consecutive years included being named Best Brewpub.  As the brewery approaches their 25th anniversary this November Edelson has plans for some big beers, he reveals the "big one" on the show this week.  We chat about their new production brewery in Exton, PA and their entry into the distribution market, as well as recent events at their newest pub right here in Atlanta.  Oh, and some chatter about cave-aged beers and cheeses. Although the vast majority produce way less than this, the number was increased from 2 million barrels in 2011 to reflect the growth of the industry. For reference, the Treehouse Brewing Company has the capacity to produce about 150,000 barrels per year at its current facility which opened in 2017, whereas the Boston Beer Company, makers of Sam Adams and one of the largest craft breweries in the US brewed about 5.3 million barrels in 2019. According to the American Addiction Centers and Alcohol.org, the use of alcohol has been normalized in almost every culture, but it should be noted that alcohol is a toxin, and regular use of the can lead to medical, mental health, and social problems...In the U.S., alcohol is the most commonly used substance of abuse among young people...Individuals ages 12-20 account for 11% of all the alcohol consumed, more than 90% of which is consumed by binge drinking. Current drinking culture can make it difficult for parents and young people to fully understand the severity and potential consequences of alcohol abuse. Teens may drink because of peer pressure, experimentation, stress, or other reasons...this risky behavior can lead to an alcohol use disorder (AUD) and heavy alcohol use in the teenage years can cause lasting cognitive deficits and alter the course of brain development as the brain continues to mature into a person’s early 20’s. Other dangers associated with underage drinking include impaired judgment, which can lead to violent behavior, and drinking and driving, increased risk of carrying out or suffering from physical or sexual assault, injuries, increased risk of later alcohol problems, and death. These IPAs have a high alcohol content over 7.5% and are typically described as having intense fruit flavors and aromas, a soft body, and smooth mouthfeel. They often have an opaque color with substantial haze and have less perceived bitterness than traditional IPAs but are always massively hop forward. This emphasis on late hopping, especially dry hopping, with hops with tropical fruit qualities lends the specific ‘juicy’ character for which this style is known. The New England IPA has undoubtedly been the hottest trend in craft over the past few years with many small and larger craft brewers trying their hand at some version of a hazy IPA-style beer. In 2018, its first year as a competition category at the Great American Beer Festival, the “Juicy or Hazy Double IPA” style garnered more entries than any other style category - dethroning the American IPA as most entered beer for the first time in 16 years. For more on the New England IPA phenomenon, see “How the Hazy New England IPA Conquered America” (Thrillist, 2018), the “New England IPA” style sheet from Craft Beer, “‘Juicy or Hazy’ Ales Debut in BA Beer Style Guide, Representing New England IPAs” (CraftBeer.com, 2018), “The New England Style IPA is The Anti-IPA” (CraftBeer.com, 2017), “What Are New England IPAs (NEIPAs)?” (Beer Cartel, 2018), and “What the Hell Happened to the West Coast IPA?” (Gear Patrol, 2019) 44:00 - Generally speaking, the west coast IPAs that pioneered the American style highlight the bitterness of hops over everything where east coast IPAs strike a balance between malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness. Whereas west coast IPAs are dryer and have an aggressive bitterness, an east coast IPA is sweeter on the front end, which fades into bitterness, thanks to the hops. As an offshoot of the east coast style, New England IPAs are distinctly juicy, as in they can sometimes taste like you took a bite into a tropical fruit or citrus with the rind still on. Previous holdouts, who due to the early dominance of the west coast style thought that “craft” and “bitter” were synonymous, as well as newbies to the craft beer scene, have typically found it somewhat easier to get in on the game through the New England IPAs more approachable flavors, which has increased overall interest in craft beer. - For more see “East Coast IPA vs West Coast IPA: What's the Difference?” (Gear Patrol, 2020)49:39 - See “How The Rise Of Craft Beer Is Contributing To The Decline Of The Homebrewing Lifestyle” (Forbes, 2016)49:43 - Counterweight Brewing Company49:45 - DuVig Brewing Company49:49 - In January 1985 there were 100 craft breweries open and operating in the US, including early craft pioneers like Sierra Nevada and the Boston Beer Company, by 1996 the number of craft breweries had grown to 1000, and 50 different categories were recognized and judged at the Great American Beer Festival. The first “American Craft Beer Week” took place in 2006, and in 2014 craft beer production volume saw an 18% increase over the previous year with IPA taking over the overall production lead for the first time. By 2016 there were over 5000 craft breweries operating in the US, by 2019 there were over 8,000. In 2019 craft breweries captured 13.6% of the overall US beer market with sales totaling over $29 billion dollars, up from just slightly over $10 billion in 2011, and Ken Grossman, who founded Sierra Nevada back in 1980, has a net worth of $1 billion dollars. - For more see “Beer History” (Craft Beer), “National Beer Sales & Production Data” (Brewers Association), “Retail dollar sales of craft beer in the United States from 2011 to 2019” (Statista), and the Forbes profile of Ken Grossman53:16 - See “2020 Zymurgy’s Best Beers in America Results” a list compiled by Zymurgy, which is the bi-monthly magazine of the American Homebrewers Association56:42 - See “The History of Beer” (Craft Beer & Brewing), “Who Invented Beer?” (History.com), and the “History of beer” Wikipedia entry57:00 - See “An ancient thirst for beer may have inspired agriculture, Stanford archaeologists say” (Stanford News, 2018), “The History Of Beer And Why Civilization As We Know It May Have Started Because Of It” (All That’s Interesting, 2016)58:49 - See the “Stout” Wikipedia entry and various style sheets from Craft Beer for American Stout, American Imperial Stout, Irish-Style Dry Stout, English-Style Oatmeal Stout, English-Style Sweet Stout (Milk Stout)This episode was recorded remotely via Zoom in December 2020The “Beautiful Illusions Theme” was performed by Darron Vigliotti (guitar) and Joseph Vigliotti (drums), and was written and recorded by Darron Vigliotti

It will launch with four flavors with pop culture-inspired names: Breakfast Club, which has blood orange, mint and ginger; Born to Run, which has lemon and rosemary; Fast Times, which has cucumber, mint and lime; and Night Moves, which has blueberry and basil.Allagash Brewing Company Pledges to Help Keep Portland’s Drinking Water CleanAllagash Brewing Company has announced a pledge to donate ten cents for every barrel of beer brewed to Sebago Clean Waters (SCW), a collaborative effort of nine conservation organizations working to protect water quality, community well-being, a vibrant economy, and fish and wildlife in the Sebago region through voluntary forestland conservation. At an amount of approximately $10,000 per year, these funds will go directly toward helping SCW preserve the quality of the drinking water in Sebago Lake.Portland draws its water from Sebago Lake, located just northwest of the city. One out of six Mainers (more than 200,000 people) and Maine’s fastest growing businesses depend on Sebago Lake for their drinking water. The lake supplies 22 million gallons of clean drinking water per day. That clean water is largely due to the forests that surround the lake—84% of the 234,000-acre Sebago watershed is covered by forests. The goal of the SCW and Allagash partnership is to conserve more forests surrounding the lakes, streams, and rivers that feed Sebago Lake. Currently, only 10% of Sebago watershed forests is permanently conserved.Paul Hunt, the Portland Water District’s Environmental Services Manager said “Sebago Lake is so pure that it is one of only 50 public surface water supplies in the entire country that require no filtration before treatment. “The forests are the natural filtration plant for Sebago Lake. Keeping it clean and naturally filtered like this means that our water is safer, less expensive, and tastes better than if the lake were degraded and we had to filter it artificially.”Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Support ACS In NYC Marathon“32K In 64 days” - I signed up for the NYC Marathon through the American Cancer Society and I am aiming to raise $32,000 ($3,200 Minimum X 10X) - please follow link below to donate what you can - $25, $50, $30K! - Onward... - Here is link –http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=94035&pg=personal&px=49477898&fbclid=IwAR2mBEvhF1wMA_BbHPhkavichNSFrE9Y9gi2RVZzfQ_4Da5Sht7gvH9rY_k*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? 8-20-19 Tonight at 9PM EST we're talking with Kent Waldeck, owner of Crafted Artisan Meadery in Mogadore, OH. Kent started homebrewing in around 2004, and like many homebrewers, ended up with mead. Kent worked for over a decade in Product Management and Marketing in consumer and B2B industries in North Carolina and Ohio before starting Crafted. Spending as much time as he can with his wife, Kristy, and their three sons traveling, camping and being outdoors is how he enjoys his time when he’s not busy whipping up their next seasonal release. Crafted’s story started in North Carolina where Kent Waldeck lived for nearly a decade prior to returning to his home state of Ohio. During his time in North Carolina Kent had started homebrewing and he was absolutely convinced that one day he’d try to open a brewery (along with every other homebrewer...ever). It was during this time that he came across mead in Charlie Papazian’s Complete Joy of Home Brewing and made his first batch.  In 2008 Kent and his wife returned to Ohio to be closer to family and to start their own family.  Although relocating for a job in Cleveland he was itching to start his own venture. That venture, though, was to start a meadery instead of brewery. Between 2009 and 2012 Kent would plan and eventually launch Crafted Artisan Meadery with Crafted ultimately opening it’s doors to the public in June of 2012. Adding session meads to the mix in 2013 allowed Crafted to expand the range of meads they offered and this breadth of category became a cornerstone of their vision and mission. Kent continued working full-time until 2015 when he was laid off and forced to jump headfirst into Crafted full-time.  In the 7+ years since opening Crafted has won numerous Mazer Cup medals and they have grown their distribution footprint to include 10 states as of 2019. 8-13-19 Tonight at 9PM EST we're talking with Kevin Martin, Head of Fermentation, Labs and IT at Goodroads Cider and Mead in Charlotte, NC. Kevin is a long time home brewer, since 1994. His first kit was a 'Slobber Porter', and his second beer was an Imperial stout/Dopple Bock/Barley wine hybrid (he was new). He read about mead in Charlie Papazian's 'New Complete Joy of Home Brewing', went out and bought a commercial example, and decided he wanted to try it out. His first batch was, in his words, 'ugh'. Then it became a challenge. He ended up making mead for his wedding, and started competing in 2001. He went on to be North Carolina Mead Maker of the Year on the Top Three plaque 13 times, with 4 first places between 2001 and 2015. He has hundreds of medals and ribbons in competition for mead. He has gotten his BJCP National Judge and MJCP judge credentials. In 2017, he went pro as head of fermentation at Good Roads. Kevin is married and has a daughter and a cat, and a member of the Carolina Brew Masters brew club, which was the winner of the first AHA Radagast Award (Kevin was president that year). Good Roads opened on St. Patrick's Day, 2017, and is both a cidery and meadery. The name comes from a play on majority owner Brian Beauchemin's last name, which means "wonderful path" in French. They are currently serving in their tasting room, and selling to individuals in growlers, but plan to have a bottling line up soon. It's been almost 50 years since we put a man on the moon, and it's almost time for our 50th episode on Home Brew Rock Stars ... hmmm, I wonder what that will be about?! To celebrate, we thought an episode with some of our favorite moments from the first 48 episodes seemed appropriate. There have been so many that we'll probably do another favorite moments again, but the clips in episode 49 were a lot of fun. To start, we share a clip from one of our first "Real or Fake" segments with guest Eric Johnson. Then we explore the meaning of "Grundrel" with Zak Rotello and some tunes from Miles Nielsen and the rusted Hearts. Then we revisit our "holiday hangover' episode with some silly stories, followed by a couple of memorable segments with resident home brew/mead maker/tie-dye artist, Mike Bohn. About the halfway point we replay a hilarious Real or Fake band names segment with guests Brian Mastrangeli and Cory Wicklund from TUNDRAS ... which was no doubt one of the funnest shows we ever recoroded! And speaking of rock stars, the next clip reviews some a deep psychoblab moments with our on site interview with Carson Suoza, now former head brewer at Pig Minds Brewing ... you'll crack up, for sure. We wrap with a short clip at Kent's during a brewers guild that explored some New Zealand hops, then some clips from our palate fatigue chat with guest Jim Goecks head brewer and found of Off Kilter Brewing. And we wrap this favorite moments with some clips from our tribute to Mr. Charlie Papazian, the grandfather of home brewing.

PODCAST: Salute to Charlie Papazian, the godfather of homebrewing, with craft beer tastings and news It's another small batch podcast from Home Brew Rock Stars where we dive in short form and discuss the Papazian influence on home brewing and celebrate Charlie's retirement! It wasn’t just Papazian’s expertise that he had honed since that first homebrewing experience in in 1970, that resonated with readers. It was also his light and humorous tone, making learning about homebrewing fun, peppered by those words became a kind of catchphrase for Papazian, “Relax. Don’t worry. Have a homebrew”. The crew also talks beer news regarding MillerCoors bailing out on the Beer Alliance after Bud Light’s Corn Syrup Ads during the Super Bowl. Hey, either you put corn syrup in your beer, or you put rice in it...who cares. The gist is the beer alliance was supposed to be a big effort to compete with the 11 billion servings the big beer companies lost to wine and spirits last year. OUCH!...that might take some healing. (just rub corn syrup on it) We sample some craft beer from Pig Minds' Southy Bitch Slap, now in the cans, and a delish double IPA w/Sorachi Ace Hops from Pipeworks called Just Drink Dummy, and not to forget Kent's very impressive Brown Ale as he finally gets the brew set up back up and running from a recent move. Finally, we sample some rock stars from the music world called Trapper Schoeppand the Shades A hearty SQUEAL to Pig Minds Brewing Co. and Artele & Co. for their awesome support and sponsorship! #drinkitup

Chase Medlin's journey to open Contrast Artisan Ales Before opening Contrast Artisan Ales founder Chase Medlin got his start in brewing at Decatur, Georgia's Twain's Brewpub & Billiards.  After learning the ropes from a couple of other brewers he moved into the head brewer role.  Medlin found his love for brewing and soon began to look into opening his own location.  After few false starts, Contrast opened their doors in Chamblee, Georgia in December of 2018. We sample Medlin's newest IPA, Luminiferous, along with their Hypnotize Biggie Coffee Stout while we discuss what's brewing and what's coming up for Contrast.  We also talk about the changes to the definition of craft brewer and whether or not Contrast will delve into "alternative beverages", the growing beer and food scene in Chamblee, and we travel back in time to talk about some thoughts Medlin shared in a 2015 interview. Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast My guest today is Victoria Redhed Miller, who joins me for the second part of our conversation on Craft Distilling, this time to talk about the art of the process which turns fermented sugars, whether from grains, fruit, molasses, or honey, into tasty, tasty liquor. Along the way she tells us about the process of distilling, including watching for our heads, hearts, and tails; the poisonous compounds found and concentrated in distilled alcohol we need to look out for; equipment every distiller should own to keep them and their final product safe; and why we should think twice about making sugar-shine. Find out more about Victoria and her work at victoriahedheadmiller.com, and her books from New Society Publishers at newsociety.com. If you'd like to hear one of Victoria's talks on distilling or making bread, attend one of the 2018 Mother Earth News Fairs, there are still several left in the year, including Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Kansas. If you're interested in making booze at home, after listening to our first episode together on the legality of this practice and deciding it is worth the concern, I highly recommend her book, Craft Distilling, as you can learn all you need from Victoria's hands-on, experience-based approach. If you want to learn more about making beer, wine, or mead as the basis for your at-home still runs, I recommend the following books from my days as a brewer, vintner, and mead maker. The first of those is Charlie Papazian's classic The Complete Joy of Homebrewing. This will tell you just about everything, and I do mean everything, about making beer. From there, on the wine side, one of the favorites that got me started is The Foxfire Book of Winemaking, filled with memories and recipes for wines, juices, and punches based on the traditions of the region I call home, Appalachia. Finally, when it comes to making mead, though I like The Complete Meadmaker and several others, my go-to is Jereme Zimmerman's Make Mead Like a Viking. He'll have you wild fermenting honey in no time, and after a night of drinking with Jereme before an event can say that a honey-based gin is a delightful thing. At this point, I would like to offer an update in my comment about methanol and damaging the optic nerve. The amount required to do so is 10ml or about 2 teaspoons. To me, that's not much, but looking into it further the risk of creating and consuming methanol in that quantity from a single batch of alcohol is unlikely. The issue increases, however, through multiple distillations as we combine and concentrate larger amounts of alcohol. Play it safe, use the alcohol refractometer, and make sure you separate your heads, hearts, and tails. A Patreon exclusive giveaway for Craft Distilling starting on Tuesday, July 10th and open for entries through Thursday, July 19th. Leave a comment in that post and you'll be entered in the drawing. Podcast: Big Brew 2018, with a home run line-up of home brewers and an extra innings bottle share! This home-brew podcast goes remote to Rivets stadium in Rockford, IL with the Forest City Brewers and friends. We took in the sun and fun at the old ballpark to celebrate the largest group brewing event in the world (AHA Big Brew is the 40th anniversary and the farewell to Charlie Papazian, the father of home-brewing!). Home Brew Rock Stars interviewed people that brewed beer for the upcoming Brews On First beer festival on Saturday June 2. And with an impressive bottle share and some baseball meets Cinco de Mayo meets Kentucky Derby, all bets were in. It was an interesting day of four brewers all doing brew-in-the-bag beers, but with 4 unique setups. Leading off with his Cincinnati Irish Red was Ron Derry, who once did a 3-day try-out with the Reds back when the players were "pumped" and the bats were corked. Batting second was Mike Bohn with his Belgian Dark Strong Ale and primed to move the Irishman into scoring position. Batting third was Jerry Machula and his Hefeweizen that's leading the league in RIMS (see pics for this fun brewing setup). And batting clean-up was Mike Coisman switch hitting for the first time with a brew-in-a-bag lawn-mower bee featuring Centennial hops. Good times for all that attended, and for those that chose not to, next year looks to be even more fun, so make plans now so you don't miss out! Next podcast will be another remote occasion at the Olympic Tavern on Wednesday May 16 with FCB, Zak Rotello and friends. #drinkitup

Fresh off the The 4B Flight and fresh off the plane from the Great American Beer Festival (just Matt, that is) we’re back with another full-length episode of Four Brewers and we’re drinking as many GABF medal-winning beers as we could get our hands on. GABF 2016 Winners! We’ve gushed about the Great American Beer Festival in previous episodes (2014, 2015), so we won’t get into the event itself too much in this post, but suffice it to say, it’s definitely one of the biggest and best beer festivals in the world. Thousands of eager beer drinkers descend upon The Mile High City of Denver, Colorado for three days of craft beer tasting and celebration. If ever a beer event were to appear on a beer drinker’s bucket list of events, GABF would be at the top of that list.  Matt Becker Wearing His Bronze Medal from GABF There is one thing that made this year’s Great American Beer Festival stand out from previous years for the Four Brewers. Our very own Matt Becker, brewer at Packinghouse Brewing Company in Riverside, California brought home his very first medal from GABF—a bronze for his Irish-style Rad Ale (see what I did there?), Riley’s Irish Red. It was a proud moment for us, watching Matt walk onto the stage to accept his medal from Mr. Charlie Papazian. We’re super-proud of him! Congratulations, Matt and Packinghouse! Riverside REPRESENT! Jereme is the author of the excellent, Make Mead Like a Viking, recently released by Chelsea Green Publishing, and a regular contributor to Earthineer.com. He joins me today to discuss how his background as a homesteader and an interest in mead and vikings lead to the focus of this book. Along the way we touch on favorite styles, how to get started, and developing your own mead making rituals and traditions. You will find more about him and his work at Jereme-Zimmerman.com, and at Earthineer.com. His book,Make Mead Like a Viking, is available through Chelsea Green Publishing, and retails for $24.95. Pick up a copy directly from Jereme or Chelsea Green, or order your own through your favorite independent bookseller today. Links to all those resources, and more, in the show notes. As I get into during the interview, I like Jereme's book. A lot. On the bookshelf behind my desk are over a dozen books on fermentation and alcohol, including those by Papazian, Schramm, and Buhner, and Make Mead Like a Viking fits well among them. Light-hearted and an easy read, it blends ancient myth with modern techniques, while keeping things wild and still providing all the information you need to get started. If you're someone new to the world of mead, or home brewing in general, start with this book, as it is as unintimidating and welcoming as a book on fermentation can come. If you've been doing this for a while and read many books on making your own mead, wine, beer, or spirits, on a scale from Charlie Papazian's The New Complete Joy of Homebrewingand Stephen Harrod Buhner's Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers, Jereme Zimmerman's Make Mead Like a Viking rests comfortably in the middle. From here, next Monday, December 14, a short episode with Ethan Hughes discussing “What about Christmas?” and how we can transform our holiday into one of new traditions. After that, on Thursday, December 17, is the last interview of the year, when Taj Scicluna, The Perma Pixie, joins me to have a conversation about the general state of permaculture. Until the next time, spend each day taking care of earth, yourself, and each other. Charles N. "Charlie" Papazian is an American nuclear engineer who founded the Association of Brewers and the Great American Beer Festival, and wrote The Complete Joy of Home Brewing. Papazian is the current president of the Brewers Association. In 1984, Papazian wrote his first book on the subject of home brewing, titled The Complete Joy of Home Brewing. The book contained a forward by influential British beer writer Michael Jackson. As of August 2005, The Complete Joy of Home Brewing has seen 25 reprintings, 3 editions, and has sold over 900,000 copies. As the first American (and, for over a decade, the only) mass-market book to provide in-depth information on subject of how to brew beer in the home, The Complete Joy of Home Brewing was very often the sole source of home brewing information for novice home brewers in America. Consequently, the book has gained iconic status among America's home brewing community, who have referred to it as the "home brewer's bible." Papazian has since written five more books.
