In this week's episode, both of our storytellers experience a shift in how they see themselves. Part 1: Fangfang Ruose fears that her prosthetic legs will exclude her from becoming a fashion model. Part 2: When engineering student Devan Sandiford runs into an old friend from his former college, he desperately wants her to think he's cool. Fangfang Ruose is originally from a small village in China and grew up in a Chinese Catholic orphanage, where she received her first prosthetics at the age of three. Later, she was adopted by an American father and a Spanish mother, and moved to Miami as a teenager. She graduated from FIU with a Bachelor's in Finance and is now pursuing a Master's in International Real Estate and Finance, focusing on development. Alongside her studies, she models, proudly showcasing her prosthetics and embracing her unique journey to advocate for body positivity and self-acceptance. Devan Sandiford is a published writer, award-winning storyteller, and community activist. His stories have been featured in The Washington Post, NPR, The Moth Podcast, Story Collider, Simple Families Podcast, Speak Up Storytelling, and elsewhere. He is an alumni of and former writer-in-residence at the Voices of Our Nations Arts Foundation (VONA), a finalist for The Kenyon Review Developmental Editing Fellowship for Emerging Writers, and a recipient of the Corporeal Writing Scholarship for Writing Trauma Toward Healing and Joy with Terese Maria Mailhot. He has a poem in the anthology Excitement and Talisman (2023) and an essay in the anthology Bodies of Stories (2022). Devan has contributed his opinions on race, identity, grief, parenting, and storytelling for articles in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Slate Magazine. He has received acclaim from multiple New York Times bestselling authors, including Roxane Gay, who called him "an excellent writer who will be endlessly interesting to his readers." Devan lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife and their two sons and works as a story developer at The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He loves brunch, biking in a morning chill, bookstore crawls, and being roasted on his birthday. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

BONUS - Dave's Book Suggestion for November - Storyworthy - Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life through the Power of Storytelling by Matthew DicksA five-time Moth GrandSLAM winner and bestselling novelist shows how to tell a great story — and why doing so matters. Whether we realize it or not, we are always telling stories. In this compelling book, storyteller extraordinaire Matthew Dicks presents wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing stories that will hold the attention of your audience (no matter how big orsmall). Coaches will often tell me they struggle to create engagement with their audience. Does that sound familiar? People don't opt in for your lead magnet. Nobody is emailing you with questions. You aren't getting any discovery calls with clients. Does it sometimes feel like you are talking to yourself with nobody on the other end of the line? MORE DIFFICULT On this episode, I want to give you 7 steps to generate more engagement with your audience. I also want to give you 75 Ways to Drive Engagement. It is a free download at http://www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/engage. You might be making the problem more difficult than it needs to be? The solution is easy to understand, yet difficult to execute properly. Through all of my research and years of experience in both radio and podcasting, I've discovered a few key steps to create interaction. We are going to cover 7 steps to create more listener engagement. Some of these steps may sound a little too simplistic. Just remember … don't make it harder than it needs to be. Step back and ask yourself if you are truly executing on each step to the fullest. 1. ASK THEM TO ENGAGE When Oscar came to me for coaching, he had a great podcast. But, he was struggling to get any clients from the show. His podcast is called "Deep Listening – Impact Beyond Words". Oscar helps leaders be better listeners. As I listened to his episodes, it occurred to me that Oscar did a great job interviewing his guests and make them look amazing. However, he never explained what he did or made an invitation for listeners to work with him. We restructured his podcast, and he now uses it to introduce prospective clients to his services and lead them to hiring his consultancy. If you're not getting engagement, you may not be making enough invitations. How do you expect your listeners to know you want them to be part of your show or work with you if you don't ask? Be sure to make your request specific. Tell your listener exactly what you want her to do. If you want engagement, you need to ask for it. 2. MAKE IT EASY TO ENGAGE Your listeners don't want to jump through a lot of hoops to create engagement. I was working with a client earlier this week. He helps leaders and organizations thrive by facing their challenges. His podcast is built around his book with the same content. On his podcast, he would suggest people go to Amazon and search for his book. Unfortunately, there are about six other books with a similar title. If you made a subtle change to the title, you end up with the wrong book. If you have ever searched Amazon for anything, you know how challenging it can be. We added a redirect with his website that takes people straight to the book. Rather than searching for it, people could go straight to a URL and get the book. One step and super easy. When you ask your listeners to connect with you, you might be using social media, your website, e-mail, voicemail, or a number of other methods. Simplify it. Create one contact page on your website containing the info to avoid the need for a laundry list during your show. Then, always provide that one contact source. You can see my contact page at https://podcasttalentcoach.com/contact/. NO CHOICE By using that one page, you also prevent your listener from getting caught in the decision paradox. If a listener is given the choice between multiple options, they don't want to be wrong. So, they make no decision to avoid making a mistake. Only give them one option. Also, make your questions specific, so they don't have to think. Give your listener a question to answer or specific piece of information to provide. My client I just referenced would end his show by telling his listeners to email him if they have any questions. We restructured that to ask a specific question around the topic of the episode. If he was talking about motivating a team, he would invite listeners to reach out with their motivation struggles. This is much more specific. If your listener isn't forced to be creative and "work" to create content for your show, you will have more success creating engagement. 3. BE A STORYTELLER FOR SUCCESS As you create your podcast, become a great storyteller. Great storytellers create fans. One of my favorite podcasts to learn the art of storytelling is Speak Up Storytelling with Matthew Dicks. Matthew is an internation bestselling author. He has been published in many magazines. But best of all, he is a 56-time Moth StorySLAM champion and 9-time GrandSLAM champion. Matthew is hilarious. And his stories are amazing. You can learn a lot about storytelling by listening to his podcast. https://matthewdicks.com/podcasts/ Your podcast cannot survive on information alone. Artificial Intelligence has the information market cornered. You need to separate yourself by using your story and personality. That's how you become unique. Interest in your story never remains constant. Your information can only become entertainment when interest is rising. If interest is falling, the show is becoming boring and is no longer entertainment. A great story continues to develop the plot and raise the interest. Have you ever sat through a long, monotonous story that never seems to end? You stare and wonder if the speaker actually has a point to this monologue. You pray for your cell phone to ring and save you. That scenario is exactly what you want to avoid with your podcast. Practice becoming a great storyteller. Stories help define your character and personality. You should always be yourself. It is difficult to play a character consistently and tell great stories. Your true feelings and identity will always be revealed in the stories you tell. If you are successful hiding your true self, you simply are not telling great stories. Vivid details and interesting points that stir emotions in your listeners can only come from your true feelings. Reveal your true character. Storytellers create raving fans. 4. FOCUS ON HELPING OTHERS Zig Ziglar had many great quotes. One of my favorites is, "You can have anything you want in life just as long as you help enough other people get what they want." How true that is. As you turn your information into engaging entertainment with your podcast, keep in mind that helping people is part of the foundation of a strong relationship. If you take, take, take, your relationship won't last long. If you are there to give and help, you will develop friends for life. Ziglar is a great example of helping people. His speeches always offered great tips to improve your life, sales or attitude. He also had great books, CDs and other products he sold. I'm currently reading "Secrets to Closing the Sale". I had the great fortune of seeing him live before he passed away. His recordings fill my library. He has so much good stuff. However, most of Zig's time was spent on helping others. There is a lot of free Ziglar information available. He would always help others and eventually sales would come his way. Get what you want out of life. Focus on helping others. 5. MAKE IT ABOUT THEM If you want people to engage, there has to be something in it for them. Make them care. Have you ever had a conversation where the other person only talks about themselves? We had a competitor in radio. He attended a lot of the same events we did. Everytime we would run into him, he would always steer the conversation to him. He was the kind of guy that couldn't read a room to save his life. One time we were backstage to meet an artist. There were about 10 of us in the room waiting for the band to come in. We were all standing around making small talk. Finally, the band came in and started their introductions with him. Big handshake and hug as if they were best friends. The band makes their way around the circle and finally get to us. Now, my wife and I had known these guys for years – well over a decade. They know our kids, we know their kids. We were there when one of them started dating his wife, who we knew her before he did. We really go way back. He asks us about our kids. We mention that the last one just graduated high school. He says he can't believe it. It was just yesterday they were this high. You know how time flies. My wife says, ?Yeah, you've seen them grow up. It's crazy. And you're expecting your third child." A big smile comes over his face. Just then, the competitor guy jumps in. "Yeah, we go way back to the club days, remember that? Remember when you played Bob's Country Bunker?" Or whatever the club was. CELEBRATE OTHERS Here was a great time to celebrate this artist and a huge moment in his life of expecting another child. In fact, it wasn't really general knowledge. He was a bit surprised that we knew. My wife has just chatted with his wife about it on Facebook. So instead of making the moment about the guest of honor, radio guy jumps in and makes it all about him. People don't want to hear about you. They want to hear about themselves. Here is a great video about making your message about your audience. This is from BJ Bueno, author of "The Power of Cult Branding". https://cultbranding.com/ceo/mirrors-vs-bullhorns/ This shows the great power of focusing on your listeners and clients rather than focusing on you. 6. TEASE AND SET UP THE NEXT EPISODE Prepare your audience to participate. Let them know the topic for next week. Then, ask them if they have a question about that particular topic. If you have a guest, ask if there is a question they would like you to ask. Michael Hyatt does a great job at this on his podcast. I had a morning show team that would say, "We are interviewing Blake Shelton tomorrow. If you have a question you'd like us to ask him, send it to us." This would create great engagement with the audience. It promoted the interview on the next show. But more importantly, it got the listener invested in the interview. They were part of it. Even if you don't use the question, you still create engagement. You can't use every question. But you can interact with every email. 7. THANK YOUR AUDIENCE Thanks for listening. I appreciate the time and help you give me every week. It is such an easy way to strengthen your relationship with your audience. Your listeners have given you something they can never get back. That is their time. Show your appreciation. A simple thank you will go a long way with your listener. If they know you are honestly grateful for giving you their time, the chance they will listen again goes way up. It must be honest and authentic. You can't thank them like gas station attendant who will never see you again. You must deliver your thanks from the heart. It should be the kind of thank you that you would give a stranger who stopped to help when you ran out of gas. I once saw Michael Buble in concert. Toward the end of his show before his last number, he stopped and addressed the audience. He told us he knows how hard we work for our money. And times are tough. He gets that. Michael then says he couldn't possibly thank us enough for spending some of that hard-earned money to see his show and support his family. His wife and kids at home appreciate it. He appreciates it. And he can't wait to come back and do it all again. He then rolls into "Song For You", which he sings partially acapella. If you have never experienced it, check it out on YouTube. It is amazing. https://youtu.be/uiUz36uWmy0 The most powerful part is Michael's authentic gratitude to his audience. Your listener is your lifeblood. Without your listener you have no show. She has many, many choices when allocating her time. Let her know you appreciate her for spending her time with you. THANKS … And thank you for stopping by. In this week's episode, both of our storytellers are looking for a little help. Part 1: Jitesh Jaggi keeps his struggle with trichotillomania a secret, until one day his wife catches him in the act. Part 2: When Devan Sandiford finally decides to seek therapy, he finds it more difficult than expected. Jitesh Jaggi is a recent immigrant from India, currently living in Chicago. He ended his career in Finance one day when he lost all his data that he forgot to save on an Excel sheet, and realized that he just didn't care. That tipping point led to him becoming a writer and he is currently working on a book of essays. He is a two-time Moth StorySlam winner and a producer for the Story Collider. He loves writing bios because he can refer to himself in the third person. Jitesh can be easily bribed with books and chocolates. Devan Sandiford is the Program Manager of Community Engagement at The Moth. Born and raised in a small town in Southern California, Devan spent his childhood and young adult years keeping his personal stories hidden from almost everyone. Then feeling a voice within him longing to be heard, he moved to Brooklyn, New York to push himself out of his comfort zone and find his voice. Devan is now a published writer and award-winning storyteller. His stories have been featured in the Washington Post, The Moth Podcast, Writing Class Radio, Speak Up Storytelling, The Womanity Project, and many other outlets. Devan is also the founder of Unreeling Storytelling—a Brooklyn-based organization dedicated to finding people who are quietly waiting to speak and yet urgently needing to be heard. Great Podcast Examples – PTC 339

Podcast Talent Coach

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 5, 2021 23:54

On the show today, I want to give you a few podcast examples that will help you in various areas of your show. These are podcasts that I feel do many things well that you can model. We will also talk about a few of my past episodes. After over 330 podcast episodes, you and I have discussed quite a few topics. I looked at my stats the other day and pulled up my 6 most popular shows. If you are looking for the episodes that have had the most impact, you can give these a listen to help you on your podcast journey as well. You can find a link to all of these podcasts in the show notes at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/examples. THE BEST Picking the best is always subjective. What I like you may not. That's the great thing about podcasting. If you don't like one host or show, you can probably find a dozen other shows on the same subject. The quality of podcast examples depends on the niche and your tastes. Just like radio formats. One size definitely does NOT fit all. I will give you a few that I feel do well in particular areas. You can take a listen and decide for yourself. INTERVIEWS In terms of hosts that conduct solid interviewers, there are three that I really like. Malcolm Gladwell on Broken Record does great interviews, though he isn't the only host of the show. The show is sort of album liner notes come to life. Broken Record brings you conversations with artists in a world without liner notes for a new audience of music lovers. Michael O'Neal on the Solopreneur Hour podcast is a great interviewer. He creates real conversations. They can sometimes be a bit long. Solopreneur Hour is a podcast of lively conversations, candid insights and bold advice for proudly unemployable people who are primed for real prosperity and fulfillment. Michael talks with the best and brightest solopreneurs from all walks of life. Barbara Corcoran has a lot of fun with her inteviews on Business Unusual. You know Barbara from Shark Tank. She reminds me of my mom and has tons of fun. I really like the older episodes before COVID hit. Her conversations with listeners were a lot more engaging. In the description, Barbara says, "Life is too short to waste your time practicing someone else's fancy theory on success. I give you the straight talk and the confidence to get there." Though I'm not a big fan, Howard Stern does amazing interviews. He usually asks exactly what the listener is thinking. CO-HOSTS When it comes to co-hosts, you need to ensure hosts have different personalities and opinions. If both are the same, one of them isn't necessary. Matthew and Elysha Dicks host Speak Up Storytelling podcast. This is a great example of co-hosts who compliment each other quite well. Unlike most storytelling podcasts, which offer you one or more outstanding stories to listen to and enjoy, this podcast seeks to entertain while also providing some specific, actionable lessons on storytelling. Screw The Nine To Five podcast is hosted by husband and wife team of Jill and Josh Stanton. They are real, sometime brash and always funny. This is a great example of two personalities really playing off each other. They have the same goal, but different approaches. BUSINESS Shane Sams on the Flipped Lifestyle podcast does a great job at giving you ideas you can actually use. This isn't just tips and tricks found on the internet. Shane has done it. The thing I love about Shane's podcast is that he promotes his membership site and courses without being over-the-top salesy. This is a great example of using your show to drive your business without being a total infomercial. Marc Mawhinney hosts the Natural Born Coaches podcast. He helps coaches. Pretty obvious. Love the title. Marc uses his podcast to boost his JV relationships. He is typically interviewing experts in the online space. They provide great information. At the end of most episodes, they invite you to a webinar. This is a great example of leveraging interviews to drive revenue. SOLO One of the best solo shows I listen to is 48 Days To The Work You Love with Dan Miller. Dan spends 48 minutes every week answering questions. He is engaging and captivating having a conversation directly with you while doing it all on his own. Dave Jackson over at School of Podcasting also does a solid solo show. Carrying a show by yourself and connecting with the listener isn't easy. Dave does it every week. If you're looking for another great show about podcasting, check out Dave. Let's get into the six most popular episodes of Podcast Talent Coach. YOUR VOICE The first is Like Your Voice – PTC223. "I hate the way I sound." I hear that complaint quite often. Many people do not like the sound of their own voice. It is quite common. It is also quite natural to dislike the sound of you own voice when hearing a recorded version of it. When you talk, the bones in your head vibrate adding to the qualities you naturally hear. When you hear a recording of your voice, those vibrations are absent causing your voice to sound different to you. The natural bone vibrations also make you do some unnecessary acrobatics with your voice when using headphones. The bone vibrations combined with the enclosed nature of your headphones cause you to hear the big announcer voice in a much different way the listener hears it. You tend to speak in ways you don't normally speak in everyday conversation. The thing we fear most is not death but humiliation. Listeners can tell in the first few words if you are excited and in the zone. Your inner critic never congratulates you. There are seven steps you can take to make your voice sound more natural and get you on the path to enjoying the sound of your voice. You will discover all seven in this episode. DOWNLOADS The next is How To Increase Your Downloads – PTC209. Most of us want to grow our audience, increase downloads and become more influential in our niche. I recently conducted a survey asking about your biggest challenges with regard to your podcast. The most frequent response revolved around ways to increase podcast downloads. If you were to list your top three struggles with your show, would one hurdle you list be getting more listeners and engagement? When podcasters reach out to me for their free strategy session, I ask them how I might help with their podcast. Promoting the show, gaining listeners and increasing podcast downloads is most always part of the answer. You are not alone. We all want a bigger audience. Whether you have 100 listeners or 10,000 listeners, I'm sure you would like a few more. There are 6 steps to growing your audience. You can hear it in episode 209. YOU'RE AN EXPERT Next is 3 Ways To Position Yourself As An Expert – PTC227. Once when I was grabbing a quick bite to eat at the local fast food restaurant, I was reminded we are all an expert at something to someone. After ordering my food, I pulled up to the drive thru window of the fast food restaurant to pay. My total came to $4.38. I handed the kid in the window $5.38. The amount completely puzzled him. He looked at the currency for quite some time. I was beginning to think he didn't realize I needed change. After what seemed like two minutes, he looked around for his manager. When he realized his manager was helping another customer, he looked back at the money trying to devise a plan B. The kid finally stuck his head into the window and asked, "Are you good at math?" I said, "The total was $4.38, right?" He replied with, "Yeah." I said, "You owe me a dollar." "Oh, that's what I thought," he replied with relief as he ducked to the register to retrieve my dollar. At that point, I realized we are all an expert to somebody. Even people who do not normally deal in American currency could probably guess that $5.38 minus $4.38 equals $1. To this kid, I looked like a genius. You may not feel you are an expert in your niche, because you don't have the experience or success equal to others. Just realize you have more experience than the beginner. You are always a few steps ahead of someone else. If you think about where you were two years ago, you are much more experienced than a person in that position now. Help those folks make the two-year journey to get to the point where you are now. There are 3 Ways To Become An Expert In Your field. We discuss them in episode 227. LAUNCH The next episode is What Do You Need To Start A Podcast – PTC248. It seems so overwhelming. Launching a podcast looks so technical and confusing. What do you need to start a podcast? It really is much easier than it appears. You can truly have a show up and running in four weeks. When I was launching my podcast, I had been in radio for a couple decades. I knew how to create a great show. What I didn't know was how to get it on the internet, on Apple Podcasts and out to the world. I knew how to create an .mp3, but how do I make that .mp3 an actual podcast? I watched a ton of YouTube videos. It felt like the more I watched, the more confused I became. It seemed everyone had their opinions without a real "right" answer. I had almost too many options. Which were the best? In episode 248, we cover the six easy steps to follow to get your podcast up and running. Don't overthink it. Done is much better than working for perfection. ATTENTION The next most popular episode of Podcast Talent Coach is How To Capture Attention – PTC219. Have you noticed a lot of the business interview podcasts sound the same? We are hearing the same guests answer the same questions time and time again. How do you become unique in this sea of sameness? Storytelling can transform your podcast. I was on a coaching call with Arman the other day. He is a great public speaker who is launching a podcast to compliment his business. Arman has a knack for telling stories in his speeches. His past life experiences create compelling tales. We were discussing the power of stories in his show. There is a subtle difference between telling stories in a speech and telling stories in a podcast. During a speech, few people will get up and leave if you don't hold their attention. While listening to a podcast, if you are captivating, there is a good chance your listener will go find something else to enjoy. There is no guilt in turning you off. Therefore, you need to capture their attention right out of the box and hold it. Stories can be a powerful tool with your podcast. People do business with people they know, like and trust. Stories help you develop that knowledge, likability and trust. Your stories define you and will touch many more people. The stories you tell and the details you include reveal many things about you. That begins to develop that like and trust. Stories help you connect, motivate and inspire. There are four parts to the storytelling structure. We cover those in episode 219. COACHING The episode that was the most popular for the longest time is Behind The Scenes Of A Podcast Coaching Session – PTC204. Dave Jackson and I reviewed the Jeep Talk Show on the Podcast Review Show. Tony Muckleroy, one of the hosts of the show, reached out to me for a follow up review. On this episode, I take you behind the scenes of that coaching session to show you how things work. It is my hope there are a few things in this session that might help you improve your show. Tony hosts the Jeep Talk Show with his two co-hosts Josh and Tammy. They started the podcast about 8 years ago. The primary reason Tony reached out for coaching is audience growth. Their show has plateaued around 1,700 downloads a month. Tony is hoping to discover how they might increase their audience and grow the show. During our coaching session, Tony and I discuss the points Dave Jackson and I made on the Podcast Review Show, the progress the hosts have made toward those points and where they might go from here. Jeep Talk Show has some passionate followers. The team posted our coaching session as an episode of their podcast. It is Tony's hope that sharing the session with his audience might get listeners to provide the show with additional feedback. This episode features the coaching session with Tony and his show. It was episode 204. LISTEN There you go. 15 different episodes that you can check out and use to overcome some of your struggles. Guess what? You can become that amazing storytelling you secretly want to be! In this First Time Facilitator re-run of Episode 8, internationally bestselling author Matthew Dicks shares why storytelling so important, and how telling stories is not simply sharing a series of events; it's the manipulation of emotions. It's a skill that can be taught and he shares some of the techniques he uses to engage his audience, whether they're 10 year old kids, or politicians. So many cool things happened after this podcast was released on 8 April, 2020: I met Kate Norris and Thomas Krafft from Presentation Boss (we basically caught up and just spoke about how great Matthew was!) They started their own podcast, Presentation Boss, and then a live storytelling event in Brisbane called Life Out Loud (based on Matthew's event in the US called Speak Up Storytelling). Earlier this year, I shared a story during the virtual Life Out Loud event and guess who was the surprise guest story-sharer… you guessed it, Matthew Dicks! Stop binging shows on Netflix and start binging Matthew Dicks' stories on YouTube. They're brilliant, and always stir an emotional response - ranging between laughter, or goose-bumps. In this episode you'll learn: What a story is (and what it isn't) The details you should leave in your story and more importantly; the details you can leave out How you can become more memorable by sharing things that are vulnerable, amusing or embarrassing The power of assuming that no one wants to listen to anything you have to say How you can start collecting your own stories by reflecting on everyday moments (Homework for Life!) About today's guest: Matthew Dicks Matthew Dicks is the internationally bestselling author of the novels Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend, Something Missing, Unexpectedly, Milo, The Perfect Comeback of Caroline Jacobs, and the upcoming Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life through the Power of Storytelling.
