Giving Your Kid Their First Phone with Kristi Bush

Parents often ask me about how to approach giving their kid a phone for the first time. Today on the podcast, I'm joined by Kristi Bush, founder of Protect Our Kids. We're talking about strategies to use before you give them the phone, as well as tools for monitoring their use. You'll Learn:Examples of kids accessing internet content that they shouldn't (and how it often happens)Why it's important to have boundaries and guidelines from the startCommon pitfalls of gaming consolesHow to prepare for giving your kid their first phoneStrategies for monitoring device useIf you're concerned about technology use and want to establish good practices in your family, you're going to love this conversation!-------------------------------Kristi Bush is a coach and speaker who helps families navigate the overwhelming challenges of social media and devices. She's worked with kids and families for many years, including as a licensed social worker. She combines science and storytelling to give a unique perspective of the benefits and threats associated with social media and technology. Giving Your Kid Their First PhoneKids are curious (they're supposed to be!). But this curiosity can lead them to seeing things online that are not developmentally appropriate. Using technology and social media is a skill. Your responsibility as a parent is to teach your kids those skills, slowly and in stages. You don't want to jump in with an all-access pass right away. Kristi agrees with the guideline of waiting until 8th grade before giving your child a smartphone. However, she also acknowledges that some families might need ways to communicate with kids who travel home from school on their own, have sports, etc. So, how do you know when it's the right time?First of all, don't give your kid a device if they aren't even asking for it. This is just a win for you as a parent.Kristi says that parents' relationships with their kids change after they get that first phone, “Once you give your child a phone, you will always wonder, are they okay? What are they doing?” It changes the whole dynamic. You'll know that they have access to some pretty serious things and that you'll need to have some adult conversations. Of particular concern are pornography, predators and bullying. Your kid might see things that really stick with them. The other concern is when your specific child is mentally, emotionally and psychologically ready for the responsibility of a phone. This answer is different for everyone, even within the same family. If your kid is already obsessed with gaming or their appearance (which can be intensified with constant access to a camera), these issues will be magnified if they have a phone that is with them all the time. Ultimately, Kristi wants parents to feel good about their decision. She talks to a lot of parents who gave their child a phone because all the other kids their age had one, but they didn't feel okay with that choice. The decision was driven by fear that their kid would be left behind socially, and they didn't follow their gut. Whenever your kid jumps into texting, social media, etc., they will catch up. They won't be left behind. Just as with other developmental stages and skills like potty training and reading, it's okay for every kid to be on their own timeline. Set Up StrategiesHere are some steps and strategies to prepare your child and their new device:Decide (along with your co-parent if you have one) on the boundaries and guidelines ahead of time. Set up the phone with passcodes, settings, etc. before you give it to your child. This way, it will be ready for them to use as soon as they open...

Today, we are going to get into a highly contentious and debated topic: gender-affirming surgeries and hormone blockers for minors. What are your views on these medical interventions? Are they vital for the well-being of young people, or do they raise significant ethical concerns and do irreversible damage to young people? In this episode, Jason sheds light on the growing industry that is mutilating minors after convincing them of the need to take hormone therapy and undergo radical and irreversible surgery. If you are a parent or grandparent, you need to listen to this episode so you know what's really going on.

This afternoon, Joe and David started a conversation about our education system and how it has been undermined by a leftist agenda. The pair first examined how Chicago public schools are being directed to pass migrant students, even if they have failed. They also pointed out a case in which parents are suing their school district because students were roomed with the opposite sex, with the transgender agenda taking precedence over children's safety and comfort. After a short break, Joe and David welcomed guest Shaun Porter to the show. Shaun Porter is a 45-year-old Western Maryland native with two sons—one is a professional firefighter, and the other is a 5-year-old deaf child. Porter has been active in civil rights matters since 1995 and currently shares his First Amendment activism on YouTube and TikTok, where he has garnered over 1 billion views since 2020. Porter is currently laser-focused on political and school board corruption in Washington County, Maryland. Together, the three discussed how Shaun confronted his school board after they allowed his deaf son to be bullied and abused by classmates. Following Shaun's departure, Joe and David turned their attention to the second would-be assassin and how the DOJ recklessly released his letter, which called for a $150,000 bounty to be placed on Trump, before closing in prayer.

Guests: Deborah Brocato, Founder, Health Not Harm Maryland Pastor Shannon Wright, GOP Mayoral Candidate for Baltimore City (2024), For more information and to support Shannon for Mayor, go to: www.Wright4Maryland.com  The Maryland Constitutional Amendment that has been put on the ballot for the 2024 Presidential General Election obfuscates the intention of the bill by claiming it is an "abortion issue" and seeks to codify it for all time in our Constitution beyond the already existing bill that passed in 1991. The 1991 bill gave full access to abortion in Maryland for the full 9 months and beyond.  The language of "prevent" and the nonspecific gender information in the current Amendment is broad and vague, allowing for expansion to cover transgender health. The outcome of the Amendment will be to destroy the fundamental expectations of God-given parental rights and deny basic informed consent of the parents and guardians to oversee the health and well-being of the children in their care.  Jen, Deborah and Shannon discuss the concerns and opposition to this far reaching and widely deceptive bill that intends to mislead the voters into believing this is "merely" an abortion amendment. The ballot states, "The proposed amendment confirms an individual's fundamental right to reproductive freedom including but not limited to the ability and effectuate decisions to prevent, continue, or end the individual's pregnancy, and provides the state may not, directly or indirectly, deny, burden, or abridge the right unless justified by a compelling State interest achieved by the least restrictive means." Two important points to mention are that the ballot language attempts to guide voters as it states "confirms", yet there is nothing to confirm, in order to encourage a "yes. In fact, there is nothing to confirm, only to choose yes or no, and we strongly urge you to just Vote "NO!" Further it asserts a new "right" but leaves out any mention of gender specifically for women, pregnancies and choices associated with being pregnant and the health of the mom and the unborn. So this Amendment will not protect children due to the broad language of "reproductive health" that tends to open the gates up to the transgender movement. Additionally, Parental Rights will be "reassigned" to strangers or non-family members. The Health care system and medical providers offering reassignment treatments are huge beneficiaries of this reassignment industry. The process of medical care through reassignment treatments, surgeries and services can cost up to $800,000 per patient over a lifetime.  This Amendment language may obligate taxpayers to pay for "Gender Reassignment" treatments and services. The children may be led to choose irreversible disfiguration and mutilation, sanctioned by the government and hidden from parents, and may be subject to a lifetime of mental health issues. All this can result in catastrophic, long-term health and wellness issues for the child after stripping Parental Rights. This is unconstitutional, immoral and unethical and MUST NOT PASS. Please VOTE "NO". Follow me on X: @RealJenCharlton #MarylandAmendment #HealthNotHarmMD #ShannonWright #BaltimoreCity See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The router is your guard! Use it! Everything you need to know about routers from Chis found here. *For middles: Build that relational connection Have conversations that assure them no matter what happens they can land softly and safely with you!  *Use parental control software on all devices (learn more about those here)  *Give them a plan for what to do if they see pornography or other problematic things in the digital space. (John 1:7) *the truth that porn is bad for them and that we must protect them and the grace for their mistake. *a child needs to know 2 things after he's made a mistake: am I going to be OK and are you still OK with me? *parents have to do their own work in preparation for these moments. This is part of parenting in the digital age. *read the blog post where I talk to my daughter about the inappropriate half time show here. Be sure to come back for part two next week!  Don't forget to like and subscribe to this podcast, and I'd be so very grateful if you leave a review of the podcast on iTunes.  Reviews are incredibly helpful to me as a new podcaster. Thank you for listening and being part of my team.  I love you guys! Greta

In this episode of The Dad Edge podcast, host Larry Hagner interviews Matt Parker, the co-founder of The Exodus Road. Matt Parker shares his journey from running a children's home in Thailand to becoming an undercover operative working with the Thai Royal Police to rescue victims of trafficking.  Matt Parker discusses the importance of being vulnerable and open with his wife and children about the challenges he faces in his work, and how it has strengthened their relationships. Matt also emphasizes the need for couples to invest in their marriage through date nights, counseling, and open communication. He then shares insights on trauma and the importance of seeking help and healing, as well as the impact of online exploitation on children and the steps parents can take to protect their kids. Throughout the episode, Matt's message of resilience, growth, and the power of vulnerability shines through. Matt's story serves as a powerful reminder that even in the face of darkness, we can find strength and make a difference in the lives of others. He encourages listeners to redefine success as personal growth and improvement, rather than striving for perfection.  www.thedadedge.com/454 www.theexodusroad.com Instagram: @theexodusroad

I get a lot of requests for different topics to cover on this show, and bullying is a theme that has come up multiple times. And understandably, since we know that children and teens with learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, are much more likely to experience bullying and social rejection. And we know that being on the receiving end of bullying can be traumatic and have long-lasting negative impacts. So I reached out to Ginger Whitson, an author, mental health professional, educator, and expert educator on bullying, crisis intervention, and child and adolescent emotional and behavioral health and invited her to join me on the show. Because the concept of bullying evokes such strong feelings and likely a lot of misunderstanding about what even qualifies as bullying, that's where I asked Ginger to start — what exactly IS bullying? And does the bullying today's kids and teens experience look and feel different from back when we were in school? I mean, with the addition of technology, it just feels like a completely different ball game. I also asked Ginger to guide us on how we should best respond if our child tells us they're being bullied, if there are ways we can “bully proof” our kids, and how we can preemptively prepare them so they feel they have a plan for dealing with negative behavior from other kids. In addition to her important work with children and her books, including Friendship & Other Weapons: Group Activities to Help Young Girls Aged 5-11 to Cope with Bullying and The 8 Keys to End Bullying Activity Program Workbook, Ginger, whose work can be found under the name Signe Whitson, is also the C.O.O. of the Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) Institute, an international training program that helps adults turn problem situations into learning opportunities for young people who exhibit challenging behaviors.   About Signe Whitson (Ginger) Signe Whitson (Ginger) is an author, educator, and mental health professional with 25 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and families. FFL 099: Gheorghe Rosca, Jr. on Public Schools Being A Threat To Our Children's Welfare And What Parents Can Do About It

On this episode of Fuel For Life, I interview my good friend and fellow pastor, Gheorghe Rosca, Jr. Gheorghe is a Founding Board Member at Protect Our Kids (POK), a coalition of parents, community leaders, attorneys, physicians, pastors, teachers and concerned citizens united in the belief that today's public schools threaten our children's welfare. Public schools have a role in educating children on matters of basic biology, anatomy, and reproduction. However, the promotion of se*ual intimacy, se*ual orientation and fluid gender identities are matters that far exceed the rightful boundaries of the public-school system. So too is the advancement of Marxist Critical Theory ideology and the “re-framing” of American history to indoctrinate children into politically driven and misleading narratives. Taken together, these serve as a clarion call of the dangers to children in the public schools and, by extension, our society. POK exists to inform parents about the scope of these combined threats, their rights as parents, and to protect our kids from the harms of public-school indoctrination. Pastor Gheorghe is the eighth of twelve children, born in Romania under the communist regime of Nicolae Ceaucescu. His family immigrated to the states legally in 1991. He grew up in Southern California and lives in Orange with his wife and four children. He pastors New Hope church in Placentia, CA. He holds a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering and an MBA with an emphasis in Project Management from California Polytechnic University. As a registered Civil Engineer in the state of California, he leads diverse teams on large transportation infrastructure projects. As a Founding Board Member, he is passionate about protecting the freedoms granted in the Constitution that are aligned with the values of the Founding Fathers for future generations.Connect with Gheorghe on these following Social Media Platforms:Click here to follow Protect Our Kids on Instagram.Click here to friend Gheorghe on Facebook.Click here to learn more about  Gheorghe Rosca, Jr.Click here to visit the Protect Our Kids official website which hosts an enormous amount of free resources for parents. Connect with Bogdan on these following Social Media Platforms:Click here to check out Bogdan's Youtube Channel.Click here to follow Bogdan on Instagram.Click here to find out more about Forward Church in Irvine.

The other night on the news, there was a story about banning the 'beep test' from schools because it made (some) kids nervous and uncomfortable. Fear of physical discomfort. And comparison. And embarrassment. And anxiety. And while I (kind-of) get it, I also thought about how all those things (discomfort, embarrassment, comparison, fear, anxiety) also exist in the spheres of academic performance, exams, social media, sporting performance, school friendships, social groups and lots more. And for grown-ups (us ex-children), these things are an unavoidable pert of the human experience. If we constantly shield our kids from discomfort in all its forms, are we protecting them or taking away an opportunity to develop resilience, understanding, confidence and personal power? Of course, "it depends" is the right answer and yes, there are a myriad of variables but nonetheless, it's worth considering. As an ex-fat (obese) kid, I truly understand the aversion to beep tests but at the same time, I think we need to find a way to help prepare our kids for a reality beyond childhood, where mum and dad aren't there to constantly make things comfortable, convenient and safe; a practical reality where life doesn't care about an individual's feelings, fear, discomfort, embarrassment, anxiety or results. It's not an easy fix (of course) but it's probably worth a chat.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The back-to-school season was once filled with exciting anticipation as children embarked on a new learning adventure. However, in recent years, schools have become ground zero in an attempt to fundamentally transform America. Traditional academics, like reading, writing, and arithmetic, have been replaced with agenda-driven curricula to reform the values of our youth and less to provide them with the critical building blocks of a liberal education. California-based nonprofit organization Protect Our Kids (POK) is a coalition of parents, community leaders, attorneys, physicians, pastors, and teachers united in the belief that public schools today have co-opted education to advance ideological and political narratives. If Krista ruled the world, every church in America would make a way so that every family in their congregation who wants to remove their children from government schools can do it. This means local churches will need to provide education solutions that include single parents and low-income families. I've asked my friend, Gheorghe Rosca, Jr. (from Protect Our Kids) to come on and help us discuss how a church can start a school as an alternative to government schools and as a refuge for our children.
