Today I've invited the legendary Laurell K. Hamilton to talk about her career writing her much beloved Anita Blake series. We chat about her deft genre blending and how including horror allowed her to write the sort of mystery she wanted. We also discuss how she broke barriers representing polyamory and BDSM, and the important ways her books impacted readers. She was so generous with her time that we chatted for 2 hours, so the episode dives without my usual intro, and I've pulled sections of our conversation instead of using the full recording. I hope you enjoy it! You can order Laurell's books from my online bookshop, which helps both the podcast as well as independent bookstores nationwide. That's at bookshop.org/shop/sheworeblack. “There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds.” ― Laurell K. Hamilton, https://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/4198 (Mistral')s Kiss 0:07 Good evening and welcome to my humble podcast abode. I am Cocoa Griot, you know that 50 something who is delighted to talk to you about life, love, and a heaping of other topics. Today I want to discuss the lyrics of one of my favorite songs by Envogue and how it can apply to our lives. The song is entitled Give It Up, Turn It Loose. If you don't know the song, the basic gist of it is this is young lady is being strung along by her boyfriend. Her friends have tried to encourage her to give it up and turn it loose because it's not a healthy relationship for her. Tonight, I want to focus on some things that I have to give up and turn loose. There's nothing healthy about holding on to these three things. 0:52 Every now and I'm going to show a little of my nerdy side and guys just bear with me. This is one of those nights. One of the things that I've learned I have to do is let go of past trauma. I want to explain what not working through past trauma can do to us and why it's particularly harmful. Recently, I read that you can think of past trauma as shrapnel in your mind. That's right, it's leftover harmful fragments of an injury. When you don't remove physical shrapnel, it has an impact on the body. Mental shrapnel has an impact on the mind that can prevent you from experiencing your best life and happiness. I believe this problem exists among many people in our society today. It's definitely difficult to work through traumatic experiences, but healing from them offers a fuller and richer life. Negative events tend to stay in our minds 10 times longer than positive events. The implications of that just blow my mind. How many of us at the end of the day can recount more negative experiences than positive? When I think about children who are growing up in this pandemic.,I wonder how much trauma they are experiencing and absorbing? There is so much secondary trauma that piles on top of what they already are dealing with personally. I'm on a mission to give past trauma up and turn it loose. 2:16 The second thing I have committed myself to giving up and turning loose is self-doubt. Wayne Gretzky once said you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. I am super guilty of this because I often suffer from analysis paralysis. I would think through a situation so deeply that I convinced myself I don't have the tools to carry out whatever the task is at hand. Has that ever happened to you? You were presented with an opportunity and you convinced yourself that you don't have the knowledge, skills, or abilities to handle the task. Dunning Kruger effect is real, but here's the irony regarding this. People who boast about being confident and competent, often are not. People who do have the acumen for a task, often shy away from it because of self-doubt. It is important to take honest stock of what you have to offer in this situation. I'm the first to say I never want to be promoted past my competence, but you do have to give yourself credit for the things you do know and are able to do. Moving forward I'm willing to take an honest assessment of my skills and not knock myself before I even give myself a chance to prove that I can't do something. I have to give it up and turn it loose. 3:34 The last thing I need to give up and turn loose and I am so ashamed to say this ya'll is holding grudges. This is one of the most pointless and fruitless things that exist in my life. If a person angers me, the recovery period is pretty fast. Hurt my feelings and well that's when a grudge might just sneak up and appear. Voltaire said, "We are all formed of frailty and error, let us reciprocally pardon one another. "That's easier said than done, my friends! When someone injures me emotionally I must admit my first thought is not how I've been...

Today I'm joined by the brainy and delightful bestselling sci-fi/fantasy author Lindsey Sparks, who got me to read a book that approximately one million people have recommended to me. Lindsey calls “A Discovery of Witches” a grown-up Twilight meets the Da Vinci Code, which I think is spot on. She also blew my mind when she explained how a good sci-fi or fantasy novel will stand on its own when all fantastical elements are pulled out of it, which in turn made me rethink what I have liked about the few books in those genres I've read. One warning: we delve into the topic of miscarriage in this episode, and how it can be a trigger for many readers, and how hard it is to avoid. We are so darn excited for today's podcast. Not only was Laurell one of those interviews where you can just *feel* the writerly energy in the room, but she was creative, kind, thoughtful—and has amazing tips for your work. From avoiding info dumps (and a brilliant technique we'd never heard of) to planning a series (28 books strong!), research for writing in another gender to consistently getting in the right headspace to be productive, this episode is filled with actionable tips. Plus, if you've ever written between genres, Laurell is proof you can do so and not only make it work, but creatively thrive. Laurell Kaye Hamilton (born February 19, 1963) is an American multi-genre writer. She is best known as the author of two series of stories, Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter and Merry Gentry. Her New York Times-bestselling Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series centers on Anita Blake, a professional zombie raiser, vampire executioner and supernatural consultant for the police, which includes novels, short story collections, and comic books. Six million copies of Anita Blake novels are in print. Her New York Times-bestselling Merry Gentry series centers on Meredith Gentry, Princess of the Unseelie court of Faerie, a private detective facing repeated assassination attempts. Both fantasy series follow their protagonists as they gain in power and deal with the dangerous “realities” of worlds in which creatures of legend live. Laurell was born in rural Arkansas but grew up in northern Indiana with her grandmother. Her education includes degrees in English and biology from Marion College (now called Indiana Wesleyan University). Learn more at https://www.laurellkhamilton.com/.

'Wow! [This audiobook] has it all - a terrific new character, devious twists, plenty of action and one hell of an ending' JONATHAN MABERRY, New York Times bestselling author of Ink and Rage Angels walk among us, but so do other unearthly beings in this brand-new series by the internationally bestselling author of the Anita Blake and Merry Gentry series. And there's no question that there's evil at work when Zaniel is called to the murder scene of a college student. But is this just evil that one human being can do to another, or something more? But Zaniel is facing his own very personal demons, and the past he never truly left behind...

Hi from the UK! I’ve been listening to your podcast for years – I love it. You’re both awesome! I’ve been playing a lot of the video game Ghosts of Tsushima recently and I’d love some recommendations for books set in Japan to complement it! I like historical fiction, literary fiction, fantasy, sci-fi (I’ll pretty much try anything). I have Pachinko on my list. Bonus points for Samurai.  -Charlotte 3. My wife and I just had a baby on Valentine’s Day. We are white, Christian, and a LGBT family. We want our daughter to have as much diversity as possible. We have the little leaders and dream big series along with plenty of feminist books. We need some picture books about transgender kids, Muslim (or other religions) children, and children of different races/cultures. What are your favorite picture books for us to add to her library? Thank you! -Jessica 4. Could you recommend a fantasy or sci-fi read-alike for The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison? The things I like most about it are the fantasy elements, the fact that the main character is a person in power who leads responsibly because he’s genuinely a good, empathetic person, and the way that the protagonist learns to assert and value himself slowly throughout the book. Either way, thanks for your time! I appreciate you and your work! -Laura 5. I have been enjoying getting into some more door-stopper sized books this year and was hoping you could help me find some more. Specifically, I’d love an adult fantasy novel with a female lead (preferably written by a woman) maybe with a little steaminess. I generally really enjoy fantasy which doesn’t operate within the standard Tolkein-esque genre, but has its own twist and interesting world building. I read Kushiel’s Dart and that’s almost what I was looking for but I just couldn’t get past all the questionable consent stuff…. I don’t think I’ll be reading the rest of the series. Some fantasy books I have loved (not all door-stoppers) include the Broken Earth trilogy, the Abhorsen trilogy, Gideon the Ninth, Lies of Locke Lamora, and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. A friend recently got me into the Wheel of Time series as well, which is fun but with a much more male-centric, standard fantasy feel. I do like when sci-fi elements are thrown into a fantasy world (such as with Gideon), but would prefer it to lean more into the fantasy side of things (already have some good sci-fi ones on my shelf). Generally not a huge fan of time travel or robots (excepting Murderbot). Please no sexual violence. I look forward to your recommendations. Thanks! -April 6. Hi! About a year ago, I finally told my husband (and admitted to myself) that I’m bisexual. I hadn’t told anyone else because, well, I’m happily married and it’s not like I’m looking to date. And then, just a couple weeks ago I found out that my best friend of over 30 years is also bisexual! I would love a rec for a book she and I could read about bi women, preferably not a coming of age kind of book, but about grown women who are who they are but also bi. Any genre is good – we are both voracious readers. Thanks! -Jaimie 7. I want to find a fantasy book with the main characters as not human. Like wings of fire. I would love adventure and stuff -Samantha Books Discussed Spinster by Kate Bolick Finding Freedom by Erin French (cw: addiction, domestic abuse, harm to animals) Shinju by Laura Joh Rowland Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba, Vol. 1 by Koyoharu Gotouge with John Werry (Translator), Stan!, Adam Grano, Mike Montesa, John Hunt (cw: harm to children, mostly off-screen) Julian is a Mermaid by Jessica Love When Aidan Became A Brother by Kyle Lukoff, Kaylani Juanita The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner The Unspoken Name by AK Larkwood A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse (cw: harm to children, graphic violence) Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey (tw: rape, harm to children) The Last Place You Look by Kristen Lepionka (Roxane Weary #1) (cw: violence against women and minors including rape, kidnapping, imprisonment) The Deep by Rivers Solomon (tw: slavery) Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton (narrated by a crow and also a cow and a polar bear, dogs and cats and sparrows) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode of The Game of Nerds podcast, I sat down to chat with our chief editor Andie Boyungs to talk about the Anita Blake book series. You may have remembered her from her podcast episode last year on the Harry Dresden book series. Andie has been covering Anita Blake for just as long as she's been covering Harry Dresden. While we do chat with each other often each week, usually at least once a day, it is rare for us to stay on one topic. Before we dive in, we catch up on all the things we've been recently watching. Andie has been finishing up season three of American Gods and started the Fox series, Sleepy Hollow. I was recently have been blessed with three new Bluey episodes. Andy and I also recently binged 4 seasons of Kim's Convenience on Netflix, which was Schitt's Creeks level entertaining. But alas, today was the day I learned a lot about Anita Blake and were-animals. Don't worry, we will explain more later. Anita Blake is one badass bitch. The book series penned by Laurell K Hamilton has spanned 30 books now over nearly 30 years. So much has changed since the first book, but one thing has remained the same, how powerful and fierce Anita Blake is. Marvel even has a graphic novel on Anita Blake. Laurell K Hamilton also has many stand-alone books, but she is best known for her Anita Blake and Merry Gentry book series. Merry Gentry is a book series that started in 2000 that spans 9 books about the first and only all-American fairy princess. Anita Blake is not set up in any regular world. Her world is filled with Were-animals, zombies, ghouls, trolls, vampires, and so much more. All the people in her world are aware of these creatures, and if they do wrong, they are immediately executed. Andie goes into much detail trying to explain to me were-animals and how they aren't just specific to Anita Blake's book series. The magick that she personally practices even has some versions of were-animals. As always, I appreciate it when Andie teaches me something new. Over the years, Anita, her sexuality, and the storyline have grown. As the series progresses, we see the series get more erotic and violent. Most of this is because Anita becomes a human servant to a succubus, which feeds off sexual energy. Of course, I had to ask how she got into this series. Harry Dresden, Anita Blake, and Merry Gentry were all recommended by the same friend. She was introduced to them in the 2000s and has read them all. They are all unique and progressed Anita's story well. If you want to enjoy the series to its fullest, Andie highly recommends starting from the beginning. They aren't that huge of books, so it shouldn't take you that much time to get through them. We then go on to talk about the main characters of the series and back again on were-animals. The characters, though, stay pretty consistent throughout the series. There are very few characters that just randomly pop in. A great example is the #BrotherHusband situation Anita's got going on between John Claude, Nathanial, and Mikah. She's planning on marrying all three of them, which gets us onto a discussion of religion and mythology. Andie is quite versed in all things mythical and witchy. It's something I'm quite interested in and in awe of. Andie is amazed that a pagan writer wrote a series about a devoted catholic character who is surrounded by all these mythical creatures. She credits this being the reason why Anita has such a strong inner personal struggle through the series. She can't make sense of her life, purpose, and destiny. Frankly, Andie's got me wanting to read this series ASAP! Unfortunately, my time is limited, which brings up a quick discussion of our dislike of electronic books or audiobooks. There is just something about holding a book in your hand. We wrap up the conversation with whether or not Anita is really human? It's really up to debate with fans. She's technically a pan-were, necromancer, human servant, among other things.

This episode we are talking about "Interlude," which was first released as part of the "Out of this World" anthology of short stories by J.D. Robb, Laurell K. Hamilton, Susan Krinard and Maggie Shayne. In this one, Eve and the gang are attending a Police Conference on Olympus. While there, she meets with one of Peabody's idols, Commander Douglas Skinner. Eve quickly realizes that Skinner is a dick, because he tells her that the reason she hasn't made Captain yet is because of some "...ill advised personal decisions" she's made. He tells her that he can help her get Captains bars if she helps him take down Roarke. (Really, Dude?) Eve basically tells him to go pound sand, then has a confrontation with one of Skinner's Security Guards. But then the Security Guard is found dead, and not only is Roarke a suspect, but Eve can't even really investigate the murder. She has to turn the murder over to the Chief of Police on Olympus, Darcia Angelo, who both Jen and Tara think sounds really hot. Commander Skinner is pointing the finger at Roarke for the murder. Eve can't figure out why Skinner has such a hard on for Roarke until she looks into Skinner's records and finds that 25 or so years earlier, several of Skinner's men died during an operation to bring down a criminal ring that included Patrick Roarke. Even though this book is very short, a LOT happens in a short time. We find out some details about Roarke's father, and there's a chance that Patrick Roarke was in Dallas at the same time that Eve was found at the age of 8. Is that too much of a coincidence? Maybe, but we don't really care, because this was still a fantastic book. So many really great moments in such a tiny book. There's cute Eve and Roarke moments, great moments with Peabody, Feeney and Morris, We meet a new character, Eve in a fancy dress at a ladies tea, multiple explosions, "we almost died" sex... what more could you want?

Yep, she's back! We are very excited to talk with Laurell about her current release "Sucker Punch." Laurell Kaye Hamilton (born February 19, 1963) is an American multi-genre writer. "Sucker Punch": A brutal murder, a suspect in jail, and an execution planned—but what if the wrong person is about to be killed? When a fellow U.S. Marshal asks Anita Blake to fly to a tiny community in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on an emergency consult, she knows time is running short. When she arrives, there is plenty of proof that a young wereleopard killed his uncle in the most gruesome and bloody way possible. As the mounting evidence points to him, a warrant of execution is already under way. But something seems off about the murder, and Anita has been asked for her expert opinion on the crime scene. Despite escalating pressure from local cops and the family's cries for justice for their dead patriarch, Anita quickly realizes that the evidence doesn't quite add up. Time is against Anita, as the tight-knit community is up in arms and its fear of supernaturals is growing. She races to uncover the truth and determine whether the Marshals have caught the killer or are about to execute an innocent man—all in the name of justice.

We have David Bell, Michael Brandman and Howard Kaplan live on the air today. We will also play the exclusive interview we did with #1 NYT and International Bestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton. Laurell K. Hamilton: "Serpentine": Vampire hunter Anita Blake has managed to overcome everything she faces. But this time there's a monster that even she doesn't know how to fight... A remote Florida island is the perfect wedding destination for the upcoming nuptials of Anita's fellow U.S. Marshal and best friend Edward. For Anita, the vacation is a welcome break, as it's the first trip she gets to take with just wereleopards Micah and Nathaniel. But it's not all fun and games and bachelor parties... In this tropical paradise Micah discovers a horrific new form of lycanthropy, one that has afflicted a single family for generations. Believed to be the result of an ancient Greek curse, it turns human bodies into a mass of snakes. When long-simmering resentment leads to a big blowout within the wedding party, the last thing Anita needs is more drama. But it finds her anyway when women start disappearing from the hotel, and worse--her own friends and lovers are considered the prime suspects. There's a strange power afoot that Anita has never confronted before, a force that's rendering those around her helpless in its thrall. Unable to face it on her own, Anita is willing to accept help from even the deadliest places. Help that she will most certainly regret--if she survives at all, that is...
