She's Anita, a zombie raising hate crime enthusiast! He's Jean Claude, a vampire who's in the Chamber of Commerce and shops exclusively at International Male! They do not do it until the fifth book! It's Guilty Pleasures, the first Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter book by Laurell K. Hamilton! This was a serious thing for Sara back in college, who is currently having an existential crisis about the trashbag fakeass non-intersectional feminism of the all of it. It was new to Courtney, who hated it. It's halfway to Halloween, so we pulled this one out of a musty old crypt where we honestly kinda forgot about how we recorded it! I mentioned a quote and I mentioned the author but there were, like, twenty minutes between the two in the episode, so let me clarify that when I talked about how "the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house" I was referring to an essay of the same title by Audre Lorde, from her collection Sister Outsider which is a) a quick read, go read it right now, it won't take you but a minute, and b) about being constantly asked to be the only Black woman, or the only lesbian, or the only Black lesbian, at every conference and on every panel. "As women, we have been taught either to ignore our differences, or to view them as causes for separation and suspicion rather than as forces for change. Without community there is no liberation, only the most vulnerable and temporary armistice between an individual and her oppression. But community must not mean a shedding of our differences, nor the pathetic pretense that these differences do not exist." Audre Lorde would eat Anita Blake alive. There's actually quite a bit of content-warning stuff in here - obviously there's vampire-typical violence and lack of consent and all that, but there's also a ton coming from ol' Anita - you got some fat shaming, some kink shaming, she's really got it in for sex workers, she can't stand it when other people have any kind of good time, she's Not Like Other Girls... I bet there's even a bit in here where she talks about how unfashionably big her boobs are and how unfashionably beautiful her skin is and how unfashionably thick and lustrous her mane of hair is.
ALISTAIR CROSS Alistair Cross' debut novel, The Crimson Corset, a vampiric tale of terror and seduction, was an immediate bestseller earning praise from veteran vampire-lit author, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and New York Times bestseller, Jay Bonansinga, author of The Walking Dead series. In 2012, Alistair joined forces with international bestseller, Tamara Thorne, and as Thorne & Cross, they write – among other things – the successful Gothic series, The Ravencrest Saga. Their debut collaboration, The Cliffhouse Haunting, was a bestseller. They are currently at work on their next solo novels and a new collaborative project. In 2014, Alistair and Tamara began the radio show, Thorne & Cross: Haunted Nights LIVE!, which has featured such guests as Anne Rice of The Vampire Chronicles, Charlaine Harris of the Southern Vampire Mysteries and basis of the HBO series True Blood, Jeff Lindsay, author of the Dexter novels, Jay Bonansinga of The Walking Dead series, Laurell K. Hamilton of the Anita Blake novels, Peter Atkins, screenwriter of HELLRAISER 2, 3, and 4, worldwide bestseller V.C. Andrews, and New York Times best sellers Preston & Child, Christopher Rice, and Christopher Moore. TAMARA THORNE Tamara Thorne's first novel was published in 1991. Since then she has written many more, including international bestsellers Haunted, Bad Things, Moonfall, and The Sorority. Tamara's interest in writing is lifelong, as is her fascination with the paranormal, occult, mythology and folklore. She's been an avid ghost story collector and writer all her life. Tamara's novels range from straight-out ghost stories to tales of witchcraft, conspiracies, UFOs, elemental forces, and vampires. No matter what topic she chooses, chances are you'll find a ghost or two lurking in the background. Today, she and her frequent collaborator, Alistair Cross, share their worlds and continue to write about ghosts and other mysterious forces. Whether collaborating or writing solo, there is no shortage of humor, sex, blood, and spookiness. Tamara also conducts real-life investigations of anomalous phenomena and has seen a number of odd things over the last twenty years. As an open-minded skeptic, she's spoken to many paranormal groups and has appeared on the television show, Ghost Adventures. Most recently, she and Alistair Cross went on a five-day investigation to an allegedly haunted cabin in California's Gold Country - an adventure that inspired The Cliffhouse Haunting. She has also been featured on many radio programs and in various newspapers on the topics of haunted places and local lore. A journalist by training, she occasionally writes about ghosts and hauntings for a syndicate of southern California newspapers, but her first love is, and has always been, telling ghost stories to make people scream. . . and laugh. Tamara and Alistair co-host Thorne & Cross: Haunted Nights LIVE! every Thursday night on Blog Talk Radio. You can also visit Tamara on Twitter, Facebook, or at her blog.

Episode two hundred forty - part three Author Laurell K. Hamilton chats with Jessikah and Stacey about SMOULDER, the latest in the ANITA BLAKE series – and then talks some shop about how she manages to keep the series fresh!
This week on the KPL Podcast we have local author Laurell K. Hamilton to talk about Smolder, her latest Anita Blake novel. This is book 29 in the series and 2023 marks the 30th year for the series. This is a great episode where discuss the Anita's family, the upcoming wedding, and revisit some of LKH's past books.
Today I've invited the legendary Laurell K. Hamilton to talk about her career writing her much beloved Anita Blake series. We chat about her deft genre blending and how including horror allowed her to write the sort of mystery she wanted. We also discuss how she broke barriers representing polyamory and BDSM, and the important ways her books impacted readers. She was so generous with her time that we chatted for 2 hours, so the episode dives without my usual intro, and I've pulled sections of our conversation instead of using the full recording. I hope you enjoy it! You can order Laurell's books from my online bookshop, which helps both the podcast as well as independent bookstores nationwide. That's at bookshop.org/shop/sheworeblack. You can also help the show by following me on instagram, facebook and twitter, and leaving me a review wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for joining me today! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sheworeblack/message

We are so darn excited for today's podcast. Not only was Laurell one of those interviews where you can just *feel* the writerly energy in the room, but she was creative, kind, thoughtful—and has amazing tips for your work. From avoiding info dumps (and a brilliant technique we'd never heard of) to planning a series (28 books strong!), research for writing in another gender to consistently getting in the right headspace to be productive, this episode is filled with actionable tips. Plus, if you've ever written between genres, Laurell is proof you can do so and not only make it work, but creatively thrive. Laurell Kaye Hamilton (born February 19, 1963) is an American multi-genre writer. She is best known as the author of two series of stories, Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter and Merry Gentry. Her New York Times-bestselling Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series centers on Anita Blake, a professional zombie raiser, vampire executioner and supernatural consultant for the police, which includes novels, short story collections, and comic books. Six million copies of Anita Blake novels are in print. Her New York Times-bestselling Merry Gentry series centers on Meredith Gentry, Princess of the Unseelie court of Faerie, a private detective facing repeated assassination attempts. Both fantasy series follow their protagonists as they gain in power and deal with the dangerous “realities” of worlds in which creatures of legend live. Laurell was born in rural Arkansas but grew up in northern Indiana with her grandmother. Her education includes degrees in English and biology from Marion College (now called Indiana Wesleyan University). Learn more at https://www.laurellkhamilton.com/.
'Wow! [This audiobook] has it all - a terrific new character, devious twists, plenty of action and one hell of an ending' JONATHAN MABERRY, New York Times bestselling author of Ink and Rage Angels walk among us, but so do other unearthly beings in this brand-new series by the internationally bestselling author of the Anita Blake and Merry Gentry series. Meet Detective Zaniel Havelock. A man who can talk to angels. As an Angel Speaker, Zaniel once used his special gift to serve both the celestial beings and his fellow humans. But a terrible betrayal forced him to abandon that life. Now he's a cop working in the City of Angels. But where angels walk among us, so do demons. And there's no question that there's evil at work when Zaniel is called to the murder scene of a college student. But is this just evil that one human being can do to another, or something more? When demonic possession is a possibility, even angelic protection can only go so far. The race is on to stop the killer before he finds his next victim. But Zaniel is facing his own very personal demons, and the past he never truly left behind...
On this episode of The Game of Nerds podcast, I sat down to chat with our chief editor Andie Boyungs to talk about the Anita Blake book series. You may have remembered her from her podcast episode last year on the Harry Dresden book series. Andie has been covering Anita Blake for just as long as she's been covering Harry Dresden. While we do chat with each other often each week, usually at least once a day, it is rare for us to stay on one topic. Before we dive in, we catch up on all the things we've been recently watching. Andie has been finishing up season three of American Gods and started the Fox series, Sleepy Hollow. I was recently have been blessed with three new Bluey episodes. Andy and I also recently binged 4 seasons of Kim's Convenience on Netflix, which was Schitt's Creeks level entertaining. But alas, today was the day I learned a lot about Anita Blake and were-animals. Don't worry, we will explain more later. Anita Blake is one badass bitch. The book series penned by Laurell K Hamilton has spanned 30 books now over nearly 30 years. So much has changed since the first book, but one thing has remained the same, how powerful and fierce Anita Blake is. Marvel even has a graphic novel on Anita Blake. Laurell K Hamilton also has many stand-alone books, but she is best known for her Anita Blake and Merry Gentry book series. Merry Gentry is a book series that started in 2000 that spans 9 books about the first and only all-American fairy princess. Anita Blake is not set up in any regular world. Her world is filled with Were-animals, zombies, ghouls, trolls, vampires, and so much more. All the people in her world are aware of these creatures, and if they do wrong, they are immediately executed. Andie goes into much detail trying to explain to me were-animals and how they aren't just specific to Anita Blake's book series. The magick that she personally practices even has some versions of were-animals. As always, I appreciate it when Andie teaches me something new. Over the years, Anita, her sexuality, and the storyline have grown. As the series progresses, we see the series get more erotic and violent. Most of this is because Anita becomes a human servant to a succubus, which feeds off sexual energy. Of course, I had to ask how she got into this series. Harry Dresden, Anita Blake, and Merry Gentry were all recommended by the same friend. She was introduced to them in the 2000s and has read them all. They are all unique and progressed Anita's story well. If you want to enjoy the series to its fullest, Andie highly recommends starting from the beginning. They aren't that huge of books, so it shouldn't take you that much time to get through them. We then go on to talk about the main characters of the series and back again on were-animals. The characters, though, stay pretty consistent throughout the series. There are very few characters that just randomly pop in. A great example is the #BrotherHusband situation Anita's got going on between John Claude, Nathanial, and Mikah. She's planning on marrying all three of them, which gets us onto a discussion of religion and mythology. Andie is quite versed in all things mythical and witchy. It's something I'm quite interested in and in awe of. Andie is amazed that a pagan writer wrote a series about a devoted catholic character who is surrounded by all these mythical creatures. She credits this being the reason why Anita has such a strong inner personal struggle through the series. She can't make sense of her life, purpose, and destiny. Frankly, Andie's got me wanting to read this series ASAP! Unfortunately, my time is limited, which brings up a quick discussion of our dislike of electronic books or audiobooks. There is just something about holding a book in your hand. We wrap up the conversation with whether or not Anita is really human? It's really up to debate with fans. She's technically a pan-were, necromancer, human servant, among other things.

Lydia & Tay talk adaptation, romance, class, race, and casually leaving around diamond necklaces in our analysis and recap of episode 4 of Netflix’s Bridgerton, “An Affair of Honor.” The men in this series are VERY well dressed, and it is glorious. We finally get a big, swoony kiss, or as we all like to call it, “defilement.” Prepare yourself for whiplash, because there’s a lot of longing glances served up and dizzying relays between balls and other drama. This week’s episode is a rebroadcast of episode 25, where we featured two librarians from the Northeast Regional branch of the Louisville Free Public Library. Mk Eagle and Hannah Elliott talked about Books and Brews 502, which is similar to the Library’s summer reading program for kids, except it is for adults and can include beer and coffee. While Hannah has now moved to Jefferson County Public Schools, mk is still at LFPL and provided us with an update for this year’s program, which, like everything, is different due to COVID. Books and Brews 502 runs from December 1, 2020 -February 29, 2021. Mk says the main difference is that there will be no pop-up libraries. Instead, folks can check in at seven local breweries during their respective weeks in December, January, and February. Or Books and Brews 502 participants can check-in in the two participating coffee shops at anytime during those months. Mk says the free book giveaways will be exclusively at Against the Grain’s Public House the second week of each month, but there won’t be browsing. Instead, tell your bartender you’re participating in Books and Brews and get handed a surprise book. How cool is that? Books, and coffee or beer brews go perfectly together. For more details about the program go to www.lfpl.org Books mentioned in this episode: 1- Laurell K. It’s getting colder out there, so we’re getting hot in here! We’ve got the fabulous Katee Robert with us to talk about ménage romance and why she writes them so well. We get to the bottom of why it always gets shoved into the taboo corner of romance, the fantasy of the trope, and why we like it so very much. Also, we topple the TBR (as usual)!Thank you, as always, for listening! If you are up for leaving a rating or review for the podcast on your podcasting app, we would be very grateful! Slight change of schedule to accommodate a fun thing we’re up to…next week, just in time for your Thanksgiving sloth, we’re announcing our best books of 2020! The following week, we’re reading Sally Thorne’s The Hating Game! Get it at Amazon, B&N, Kobo, Apple or at your local indie via bookshop.org.Show NotesWelcome Katee Robert! You can’t just make wikipedia pages about yourself. High fantasy has real meaning. When talking about romance, M and F (and NB for nonbinary) are used to inform readers about the gender identity of the main characters. This is an imperfect shorthand, but at this point in our understanding of sex and gender, it seems like the most respectful way to acknowledge that there is a huge range of sexual identities that exist for people of all genders. For example, if we call a book with two women “a lesbian romance” it might not take into account that one character is bisexual, which adds to bi-erasure. So if a romance is labeled M/F, we know there is a man and a woman in a romantic relationship, but that leaves room for the sexual identity of the characters to be fully explored in the book. In romance with more than two people, the order of the letters matters. A book that is MFM would mean that the two men do not have a sexual relationship with each other, while FMM or MMF means that they do. There is nothing taboo about polyamory. Jen liked the progression of menage in Elle Kennedy’s Out of Uniform series. The series starts with a non-swords crossing threesome, Hot and Bothered. The observing one was Heat of the Night (available in the Hot and Heavy anthology), where Ryan watches Annabelle have sex with his roommate. But as the series progresses, there is contact between the SEALs in Feeling Hot and a fully formed menage relationship in Hotter Than Ever. Ellora’s Cave and Samhain were two of the original (and now shuttered) indie publishers that specialized in erotic romance and/or taboo romance. That article in Harpers about how men don’t have friends. The Anita Blake series went through a lot of changes, so just go with Katee’s method and start with #9, Obsidian Butterfly.Katee will be back to talk about morality chain in 2021. Next week, we’ll be airing our Best of 2020 episode, and then the first week of December, we’ll be discussing The Hating Game.

#PodcastersForJustice The #1 New York Times bestselling author of paranormal fiction, Laurell K. Hamilton, took a break to talk with me about why her first fantasy novel nearly tanked her career, some of the systems that go into her world-building, and why writers need to stay off the internet and protect their writing time. "I am very much a believer that if my characters have a better idea then that's magic. They've become alive enough to argue with me, to have an opinion. And I don't squash my own magic." — Laurell K. Hamilton The trailblazing, genre-bending author of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, and the Merry Gentry series, is considered an influential pioneer to the urban-fantasy genre. Laurell has sold more than 20 million books worldwide. The 27th novel in her wildly popular Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series is Sucker Punch, a mash-up of her signature blend of mystery, magic, horror, and romance. Fellow #1 New York Times bestselling author, Charlaine Harris, said of the author, "Hamilton remains one of the most inventive and exciting writers in the paranormal field." Stay tuned for a clip from the Sucker Punch audiobook at the break, “... excerpted courtesy [of] Penguin Random House Audio ... read by Kimberly Alexis.” Please help us learn more about you by completing this short 7-question survey If you’re a fan of The Writer Files, please click subscribe to automatically see new interviews. Dark fantasy has arguably become the most popular subgenre of horror and fantasy these last few years. Though not necessarily focusing on vampires, many do. With the Anita Blake novels to the TRUE BLOOD TV series (and their novels they are based on), this genre has produced many vampire tales that have gained huge followings. Netflix has recently released the 2020 new French six part series simply entitled VAMPIRES. Young Parisian high schooler Doina Radescu lives with her family of vampires. A hidden “disease” from centuries ago, they live as quietly as they can feeding on animal blood and blending in. Unlike her mother Martha and older sibings, she and her teenage brother are told to use a pill that seems to eliminate blood thirst and sun death. But the local vampire commune wants to keep every member of their community in check to the detriment to Martha. The series has been ignored by many because the title, VAMPIRES, not only is meaningless, but it also gets lost in herd of hundreds of vampire films and shows on VOD. Your co-hosts took a blind shot watching the series. They discuss and critique the entire first season and talk about possibilities where the program will go if a season two is picked up.
Fantasy and science fiction are highly “adaptable” genres. Stories can be haunted houses in space (Alien, Event Horizon), westerns (Outland, Looper), even romances (The Time Traveler’s Wife, About Time). And they can be about cops and robbers—and aliens and werewolves and whatever the case may be. So in these future and retrofuture worlds... How do we lay down the law? Is Pre-Crime legal, is “retiring” Replicants just state-sanctioned murder, are Jim Butcher and Anita Blake detectives or vigilantes? Join “Our Gang” for Law & Order: Sci-fi and Fantasy Unit. Also we take a look at what we think is the underappreciated DC film, Shazam.
Yep, she's back! We are very excited to talk with Laurell about her current release "Sucker Punch." Laurell Kaye Hamilton (born February 19, 1963) is an American multi-genre writer. "Sucker Punch": A brutal murder, a suspect in jail, and an execution planned—but what if the wrong person is about to be killed? When a fellow U.S. Marshal asks Anita Blake to fly to a tiny community in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on an emergency consult, she knows time is running short. When she arrives, there is plenty of proof that a young wereleopard killed his uncle in the most gruesome and bloody way possible. As the mounting evidence points to him, a warrant of execution is already under way. But something seems off about the murder, and Anita has been asked for her expert opinion on the crime scene. Despite escalating pressure from local cops and the family's cries for justice for their dead patriarch, Anita quickly realizes that the evidence doesn't quite add up. Time is against Anita, as the tight-knit community is up in arms and its fear of supernaturals is growing. She races to uncover the truth and determine whether the Marshals have caught the killer or are about to execute an innocent man—all in the name of justice.

We have David Bell, Michael Brandman and Howard Kaplan live on the air today. We will also play the exclusive interview we did with #1 NYT and International Bestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton. Laurell K. Hamilton: "Serpentine": Vampire hunter Anita Blake has managed to overcome everything she faces. But this time there's a monster that even she doesn't know how to fight... A remote Florida island is the perfect wedding destination for the upcoming nuptials of Anita's fellow U.S. Marshal and best friend Edward. For Anita, the vacation is a welcome break, as it's the first trip she gets to take with just wereleopards Micah and Nathaniel. But it's not all fun and games and bachelor parties... In this tropical paradise Micah discovers a horrific new form of lycanthropy, one that has afflicted a single family for generations. Believed to be the result of an ancient Greek curse, it turns human bodies into a mass of snakes. When long-simmering resentment leads to a big blowout within the wedding party, the last thing Anita needs is more drama. But it finds her anyway when women start disappearing from the hotel, and worse--her own friends and lovers are considered the prime suspects. There's a strange power afoot that Anita has never confronted before, a force that's rendering those around her helpless in its thrall. Unable to face it on her own, Anita is willing to accept help from even the deadliest places. Help that she will most certainly regret--if she survives at all, that is...

KNKI: Knowledge, No Intolerence, Kindness, Integrity3. “Submission is not about authority and it’s not about obedience; it is all about relationships of love and respect.” -Wm. Paul YoungOn this episode of the Krypt we are going to talk about BDSM in Literature, and no we’re not discussing 50 Shades but first, I have to welcome my amazing co-host, Funsize.Literature both fiction and nonfiction is a staple of civilized society. The lifestyle is a society in and of itself and we have our literature. Our fictions delve into our deepest fantasies and our non-fictions help us learn and share with others. Funsize you are a huge connoisseur of the written word. What books do you find span the scope of our world the best? Non-fictions:The Topping and Bottoming SeriesThis is a series of books that has been around since the mid 90’s. Written by Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy, these books, explore the basics of each perspective in the lifestyle. Dossie Easton also wrote the Ethical Slut which explores polyamory. The Ultimate Guide to Kink by Tristan TaorminoA very well written basics guide to everything you need to know when you first enter the lifestyle. Of course there are a lot of interesting things to be found within these pages even if you aren’t new. BDSM: How to Take Your First Steps into BDSM Another great book for newbies by Scarlett Dalton. Life, Leather, and the Pursuit of Happiness by Steve LenuisThis particular book delves into the history of leather culture and the beginnings of modern BDSM as we know it. History is very important so this is really a must read. You should also check out the Leatherman’s Protocol Handbook by John D. Weal. Other nonfictions to check out when you have a moment are:Raven Kaldera’s books Power Circuits: Polyamory in a Power Dynamic, and Sacred Power, Holy Shrine. Two Knotty Boys and Two Knotty Boys Back on the Ropes, a couple of interesting, educational, and entertaining books on learning the art of rope bondage. Elizabeth Cramer, Kuldrin I know you love her writings just because she keeps things short and simple, which works well with your busy schedule. She has written something like six or seven books detailing how to be a dominant and how to be a submissive. We’re both huge fans for a reason. And finally, Igniting the Fire: the Art of Romantic Submission by Master Arcane. This amazing book illustrates the BDSM dynamic through the eyes of a truly caring dominant. I’ve personally read this book at least twenty times over. If you want to get an idea of what you’ll be reading definitely go back and listen to the amazing interview between Kuldrin and Master Arcane. https://kuldrinskrypt.com/s01e14 There are dozens of others we could recommend but in order to keep me from talking until I’m hoarse this is the list we’re going to have to settle for today. If you have any more suggestions feel free to join in the discussion on our Fetlife group, Kuldrin’s Krypt. FictionSo our starting point for this particular half of the list is a rather obvious choice; the granddaddy of Sadism, the Libertine, Marquis de Sade. Justine explores a whole world of human sexuality, torture, imprisonment, and the duality of the justice system. Even if it doesn’t quite explore true BDSM and power dynamics it is a wonderful read. 120 Days of Sodom is a novel of erotic orgies. While this sounds fun in a sense, this particular tale is all about sexual abuse, torture (not the fun kinds), and finally the slaughter of several characters involved. There are several other works by de Sade, many of them available for free in PDF format. It is however, important to remember while de Sade inspired the word sadism for his works on featuring pain in a sexual setting, much of what is actually portrayed is not respectful or caring. It is in fact abusive and often non-consensual acts in vivid detail so if you can not stomach these things, be sure to skip these classics. The Way of a Man With a Maid by anonymous is actually one of my favorites. This novel portrays a man who is fascinated by a young woman, which leads to acts of obsession, bondage, and questionable consensual content. It’s highly erotic but can again doesn’t accurately portray the consent necessary for anyone truly in the lifestyle. Anne Rice’s Sleeping Beauty series illustrates the traditional tale of sleeping beauty in a more erotic light. It truly does display certain fetishes and parts of the BDSM lifestyle. Maya Banks the Enforcers Series, Mastered, Dominated, and Kept, are three books which mix the erotism of BDSM with more romantic notes. Quite enjoyable. The Kushiel’s Legacy Series by Jacqueline Carey, which set off my exploration of the lifestyle. I read the very first novel in this series when I was only thirteen years old and when it’s subject matter was discovered it led to a talk which led me to my training years later. It’s still one of my favorite’s not only because of the highly masochistic main character, or the erotic scenes, but also because of the political intrigue. And finally the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Series by Laurell K. Hamilton. The series as it moves along begins to depict more of the lifestyle and even features a submissive character, Nathaniel, to explore what it’s like for some of us out there. What’s more is that these novels, despite their fantasy/ sci-fi setting, still manage to (mostly) accurately display everything from fetish clubs, to power dynamics, to the roles of protectors. I’m clearly a huge fan. So these were the literary works we’ve chosen to delve into. As we said before there are tons more to be found. A final note or two.I’d like to thank our Executive Producer Jeremiah, Our Senior Producer Matt, Producer Missy Lynn and our Jr. Producers K-2SO, Irish Mt. Dragon and The Accidental Trucker. In this episode, you get the real "old days of radio" experience listening to Jen pick up her glass and drink from it and set it back down repeatedly. Ice clinking! It's like we are on Mad Men! Metal Desk + Podcast = Clink Amplification We start out playing a new game we dub "Scenarios" - Essentially we each make up a series of geeky/pop cultural scenarios for the other to navigate. It involves Harry Potter and Star Trek! For the main event, we have Smut Shaming or de-stigmatizing guilty pleasures. We have discussed before that we are adamantly against the concept of “guilty pleasures” - just like what you like and you should not be ashamed of it or made to feel shame because of it. In this segment, we express our love of fanfic and romance novels, defend them from shamers, and explain why they appeal. And, as promised, here are all the books we recommended during the show as well as some extras! Help support this podcast! >> Dumpster diving. Mall walking. A 19th-century transcendentalist. These are only a FEW of the things that you have to look forward to in the sixth episode of the "Write Now" podcast. Walk it off. It was my dad's advice to me as a child, and it's my advice to you now as a writer. There's an interesting relationship between writing and moving -- between kinetic and creative energy. I hope you've had a chance to discover this for yourself. But if not, there's no time like the present to try it out. Going for walks helps me deal with writers' block and find new (or rediscover old) inspiration. It is a great way to refresh your perspective, get the blood/oxygen pumping into your brain, and simply reconnect with the world around you. And if walking isn't your thing, or if you face physical challenges or medical difficulties, that is completely fine! I've noticed that I get very similar benefits from riding in a car and gazing out the window, or otherwise having my physical body transported through time & space. Also! Here are the texts I reference in this episode, if you're interested in checking them out: 1. "Walking" by Henry David Thoreau, via The Atlantic 2. "A Poem is A Walk" by A.R. Ammons, via Claims for Poetry Energy begets energy. Remember that next time you get stuck. Book of the week! Ugh. I read the next book in the "Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter" series, and in doing so decided I was done with the "Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter" series. Burnt Offerings by Laurell K. Hamilton is the seventh book in the series and... for a number of reasons, I simply didn't enjoy this installation. It was relatively plot-light, which is sometimes OK with books and book series where the main focus is the main character's growth and relationships with other characters. But I really can't say those are especially well done here, either. Don't get me wrong -- I love horror. But everyone has subtle preferences where genres are concerned. I prefer creepy tales of psychological horror and madness and supernatural creatures and loud crashes in the basement. (See: House of Leaves, The Haunting of Hill House.) I don't enjoy the side of horror that revels in torture and cruelty and hurting people. And that is what's in the spotlight here. There are multiple violent rapes, intentional cruelty, and much else that I find personally distasteful. So! You might enjoy continuing with this series if you're OK with the more torture-y side of horror (and no judgment here if you are!) -- it simply wasn't something I enjoyed. It was fun while it lasted, Anita. Keep up-to-date with my reading adventures on Goodreads. Want to get sweet emails from me? Help support this podcast! >> It's the fifth episode of "Write Now"! Hooray! I hope that this podcast is helping you to find the time, energy, and courage you need to pursue your passion and write every day. Regain your lost confidence in 5 steps. Say it's been a long time since you've written. Say you've been rejected, you've been told (or told yourself) you're not good enough, you've lost a job, or you've simply been intimidated by the sheer number of books at the bookstore. Fear not! Seriously. I'm here to tell you that you're awesome, and that you can regain the confidence you need to start writing again. Here's how: 1. Free yourself of the pressure. 2. Remember that you are a writer, and nothing can change that. 3. Be proactive -- don't let despair win. 4. Form a habit of writing every day -- for while practice won't make you perfect, it will make you better. 5. Find a writing coach, mentor, or someone you trust to read your work. I mention a couple of previous podcasts in this episode, which you can find below if you haven't listened to them already: WN 001: What's keeping you from writing? WN oo3: Writing as self-care Remember, you have potential. So regain your confidence, get back on the horse (or bicycle or Vespa or dinosaur or whatever you prefer to ride), and live it out. I know you can do it. Book of the week! I am DEFINITELY NOT EMBARRASSED about what I read this week. Which is The Killing Dance by Laurell K. Hamilton, a.k.a. the sixth book in the infamous "Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter" series. It's kind of like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"-meets-paranormal romance-meets-'90s noir. If that sounds like something you'd enjoy, I'd recommend starting with the first book in the series, Guilty Pleasures. Or not. It's your life, and you're free to read whatever books you like in whatever order you wish. Keep up-to-date with all of my reading exploits on Goodreads! Submit a question. This week's news section descends into anarchy as the team discusses the merits of Young Adult fiction and laments the loss of the Strange Chemistry imprint. Ed reviews the latest Robin Hobb, which is out in August, and Ninfa talks about the less smutty Anita Blake books. All recordings are issued under official license from Fab Radio International. The Bookworm is a Truly Outrageous Production.
Denne uken tar vi for oss urban fantasy detektiver. Alt fra Harry Dresden til Anita Blake. Vi har til og med med en gjest fra Førtito, Karina! I studio: Cicilie, Martin og Karina
This is a mecha show. No, really! We thought we’d do something special for our 50th episode*. But I doubt anyone has ever heard of the Sunrise show we decided to talk about. It’s an extremely unknown show called Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. I mean it’s not like it wasn’t the new cock of the walk or anything as anime goes. But we talked about it anyway! Special Bonus Guest Star Buy Her Book: K. E. Ireland totally showed up for this episode. She has this book thing called Playing The Hero that you can buy and read about the universe it’s set in and more at her website known only as the Natan Fleet Show. Totally NOT the Nathan Fleet Show, nope. Spoiler Warning! Spoilers happen. We tried to keep them away in the first half, but some still slipped out anyway. You have been warned! OSMnotes We may never know what lies underneath his mask... Unless you see him besides during Halloween. *(Actually, we had no clue that this is the 50th episode until a few days after we recorded it.) So there are all sorts of ways you can buy this show! Therefore I’m not going to be posting any links this time! I’m sure you people will know how to find it. And you may have noticed that Anime Expo totally happened more than a week ago. In fact, by now both Otakon and Comic Con has happened! Hopefully we can get to that stuff next week. But for this week we talked about Otakon and we stole many a news story from our buddy Niko. You should also check out his blog, Nikoscream. It is a blog that, unlike mine, is actually updated. On a regular basis. It’s a crazy idea, that. Crazy. Playing the Hero, by K.E.Ireland. Check it out at The Natan Fleet Show. Do it. You should also check out our current contest, now running until the end of August! Just send us an email at osmcast@gmail.com and tell us what books you think are pretty awesome. We’ll try our best to get a hold of them and check them out. If deemed awesome, nay, OSM enough… We’ll probably get to a podcast about it! However, no Twilight ladies. That stuff gets enough traction as it is. Also no Anita Blake stuff after book 4. The prize for two lucky email senders will be signed copies of Playing the Hero, by K.E.Ireland! You can check out more at The Natan Fleet Show.
No seriously, plug her in. You'll like it. We’re back in the groove! We decided to kick things back into second gear with our take on the ADV release of My Dear Marie , the 3-part anime OAV adaptation of the manga by Sakura Takeuchi. Musical Interlude: The Phenomenauts. If you could somehow define the word awesome as a band, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better one. I mean, there are the guys that have founded the genre of ROCKET ROLL. They know nothing but cold steel and laser beams and space ships. And they can rock out with honor. _Science _and honor. OSMnotes You can still find this DVD hanging around, both packaged by itself and also as a bundle with Cosplay Complex. The bundle is oddly enough cheaper. Probably because it was released later. Whether or not it’s worth getting Cosplay Complex in addition to My Dear Marie for cheaper… Sure, I guess! One could say they are phenomenal. I have no clue is Cosplay Complex is good or not, but My Dear Marie is worth it. You can use the other for frisbee golf or perhaps a target for left over firecrackers. You know, if Cosplay Complex sucks. In any case I highly doubt it’s as fun, quirky, or as much fun to watch as My Dear Marie. She’s got spunk! And circuits. You should also make a circuit with our latest contest! It’s our escapade into the wide world of books, and we want your help to get us diving in. We’ll even throw in a brand new novel in the mix, one that’s so new and hip it’s self-published. Playing the Hero, by K.E.Ireland. Check it out at The Natan Fleet Show. Check back with us next week as the talk about something a tad bit more recent, the anime and manga series Soul Eater!
Blah. Well, the original plan was to have this last week and a full lenngth podcast this week, but at least this gets us back on track. And this tracks starts off with Basil and Kevin half-heartily discuss that live action film Dragonball Evolution while all the cool kids talk about the new Transformers movie. Whatever! OSMnotes If you were hoping for something more scathing, you can go read this. You’ll find waaaaaay more hate and vitriol in it than we could ever muster about this movie. In other news hey, new contest! IT’s deisgne dto help us kick off our foray into the exciting thrill-packing world of um… books! Playing the Hero, by K.E.Ireland. Check it out at The Natan Fleet Show. We so crazy. Just send us an email at osmcast@gmail.com and tell us what books you think are pretty awesome.
