Our book this week is I Am Abigail: A Texas Woman's Childhood Nightmare - And Her Escape From Hell as a Sex Slave/Survivor.our guests are Abby Alvarado and Jamie Collins. Jamie wrote this story, and Abby lived it.    At the end of last week's episode, Abby was legally an adult, but felt powerless to leave. She couldn't imagine abandoning the three children she'd had by her uncle/ adoptive stepfather/ abuser. Abby's adoptive mother Laura developed a life threatening disease, and Chevo, her adoptive father, told her that once Laura passed, he and Abby could be married and have more children. It was all she could do not to throw up when he talked that way. She wondered if it would be better just to be dead. But Abby knew that her children needed her.   But Abby's life changed when she met Rudy. They were instantly drawn to each other but had no idea how hard it would be to really get to know each other. Rudy tried messaging her on FaceBook, but Abby's responses were usually very short. No one would ever have guessed how controlling Laura and, especially, Chevo are of Abby's time and who she interacts with. To get around that, Rudy adds another phone to his plan . A phone for Abby. He doesn't know it, but that phone will be a lifeline for her and her children.   Isaiah 21:6-8 NIV   This is what the Lord says to me: “Go, post a lookout and have him report what he sees. When he sees chariots with teams of horses, riders on donkeys  or riders on camels, let him be alert, fully alert.” And the lookout shouted,  “Day after day, my lord, I stand on the watchtower; every night I stay at my post.”   Isaiah is prophesying here about the coming ruin of Babylon. God tells him that a watchman is needed to be aware of what is happening around the city and give the people reliable information about what he sees. A watchman's job is to alert people of danger.    Rudy was a watchman. He paid attention, and he tried to warn Abby of the dangers he saw. It was hard for her, but as she trusted him more and more, she was able to take action to save herself and her children.   A big lesson for all of us here is that watchmen, or we'll say watchpeople, not only have to open their eyes, but also their mouths! We cannot forget that we live in a broken world with people who have given themselves over to evil. We must be watchers. And when we see things that just aren't right, that just might mean danger to someone - we have to speak up.    I know that can feel scary, so I want to hear what you think about the idea of being a watcher for your family, your community, and the people in your church. In June of this year, I was contacted by true-crime author, Jamie Collins, who sent me a press release about a new book she was publishing, I am Abigail. The press release was extensive, but for an explanation about the book, here is just a portion of the release that I received: Written in the first person from Abby's perspective, I AM ABIGAIL is the result of an intense creative collaboration, a memoir striking for its unflinching honesty and emotional intimacy. Abby tells her story, starting with her earliest memories at age eight, when she was Abigail Rodriguez and living with her single mother, older (by two years) sister, and younger (by one year) brother in a house filled with people laughing, dancing, kissing, drinking, and smoking all day and night. As a girl, Abby had no idea that her home was a crack house. She remembers her mom urging her to stand up on the coffee table in their living room and dance for the men. And she remembers the day in May of 1988 when a caseworker from Child Protective Services (CPS) knocked on the door of their home and took Abby and her siblings away.      After a brief stay in a shelter, Abby learns that she and her sister and brother will be flying on an airplane to Hawaii. That's where her Uncle Chevo lives, and he and his wife, Laura, have agreed to assume care of his half-sister's three children. Sad about leaving Texas and her mom forever but also excited about living on an island, Abby begins to wonder, Is there a big yard to play in? Will I have my own room? On their last night sleeping at the shelter, Abby keeps tossing and turning in her bed. Suddenly, she has a memory of the last time she saw her uncle. She was five or six, and her whole family was having fun together, swimming in a pool at a hotel in El Paso. After her mom left to walk her brother and sister back to their hotel room, Abby and her uncle remained in the water, alone together. Uncle Chevo looked directly at Abby and said, “One day, I am going to marry you.” Even then, Abby felt confused and unsettled. She had no inkling of the evil that would soon be making its way to her.      By way of publicity for the book, Jamie offered the opportunity for me to record an interview of Abigail and Jamie for my podcast. Feeling her shop has been on cruise control for too long, Kat plans to overhaul Enigma with an extensive shop remodel, new artists, new managers, big events and conventions, the works. It's go time! What happens when your childhood suddenly becomes a true crime headline? How do you go on after the trauma of losing nearly your whole family to violence? Let's investigate how one woman did just that. I truly hope that we all learn things to help others and ourselves, and not just rubber-neck at someone else's tragedy. As Jessica herself said, “This wasn't just a national news headline, a cold case, or a true crime show. It was my family. And my life.” Our case this week is from the book “I Am Jessica” by Jamie Collins, and our guest is Michelle Nietert, the Clinical Director of Community Counseling Associates, host of Raising Mentally Healthy Kids Podcast, and author of “Make Up Your Mind: Unlock Your Thoughts, Transform Your Life.” Michelle is a trained counselor and previous school crisis counselor. She presents to student and parent groups using deep yet applicable Biblical presentations. Recovering from trauma is complex, and the process looks different for everyone.
