In this episode of Nerd Legion, we dive into 'The Sword and the Sorcerer' (1982), a surprising hit from the 1980s fantasy craze. We explore the film's strengths, including its impressive special effects, compelling acting, and memorable cinematography. We also discuss its humorous tonal inconsistencies and the charm of its goofy yet creative elements, such as the unique three-bladed sword. Director Albert Pyun shows how to maximize each penny of a small budget while lead actor Lee Horsley demonstrates surprising acting chops as Talon in a difficult, mostly unlikeable role. Additionally, comparisons are made with other iconic films and characters of the era, including 'Conan the Barbarian' and 'Dragonslayer,' signaling its relevance and impact on the fantasy genre. Stay tuned for our verdict on whether this cult classic is worth a watch today, and get ready for our coverage of 'Andor' in the next episode.

Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast. Are you ready for some recommendations? This week, I am focusing on films that are perfect for anyone looking for some Dungeons & Dragons inspiration. I have got four fantastic picks: "Hawk the Slayer" (1980), "Dragonslayer" (1981), "The Sword and the Sorcerer" (1982), and "The Dungeonmaster" (1984).First up is "Hawk the Slayer." This 1980 fantasy film directed by Terry Marcel is a great watch for those who enjoy classic sword and sorcery adventures. The story follows Hawk, played by John Terry, on his quest to defeat the evil Voltan, portrayed by Jack Palance. The film stands out for its creative use of special effects, particularly for its time. It's a cult favorite and a prime example of low-budget fantasy done right. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support our work.Next, we have "Dragonslayer" from 1981. Directed by Matthew Robbins, this movie features groundbreaking special effects that earned it an Academy Award nomination. The story revolves around a young sorcerer's apprentice, played by Peter MacNicol, who sets out to slay a dragon. The dragon, Vermithrax Pejorative, remains one of the most impressive and realistic dragons ever put to film. The combination of practical effects and CGI was ahead of its time, and it's one of my favorite fantasy movies."The Sword and the Sorcerer," released in 1982 and directed by Albert Pyun, is another gem. Lee Horsley stars as Talon, a mercenary with an AMAZING three-bladed sword on a mission to rescue a princess and reclaim his kingdom. This film has some action-packed sequences and impressive low-budget practical effects. Lastly, we have "The Dungeonmaster" from 1984. Directed by several directors, including Charles Band and Dave Allen, this anthology-style film follows Paul, a computer programmer who must face various challenges set by the evil Mestema, played by Richard Moll. The film's blend of fantasy and sci-fi elements makes it unique. Each segment of Paul's journey showcases different styles and imaginative scenarios that keeps it fresh. These four films offer a great mix of fantasy adventure, imaginative storytelling, and unique special effects. They're perfect for anyone looking to get inspired for their next Dungeons & Dragons campaign. So, grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy these classic fantasy films. Then go roll some dice.Subscribe to the Video Store Podcast* The Video Store Podcast* Apple Podcast* RSS This is a public episode. Dan and Conrad resurrect an ancient wizard from a screaming coffin of tomato soup, hoist their triple-bladed shootin' sword and set off for the swashbuckling, headsplitting adventure of The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982) – the late Albert Pyun's directorial debut, featuring Lee Horsley, Kathleen Beller, Simon MacCorkindale, Geroge Maharis and Richard Lynch. It's your standard orphaned son of a murdered king returns to avenge his father's death and restore freedom to the realm, except he's actually not bothered and only wants to shag the Princess who hires him. It has some shocking scenes of gore and copious amounts of unnecessary female nudity, which made it somewhat of a video rental treasure for pre-pubescent boys in the 80s... but does it stand up to scrutiny now? Not to disappoint but there are plenty of 'Without Warning' style rants including but not limited to the Doctor Strange sequel, Conan the Barbarian, Exorcist III, the video store rental days and even...LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT???  Join us for a month long celebration of the expansive Pyuniverse!   "That's a small threat. The early '80s were awash with movies featuring bloody knights and half-dressed heroes and heroines, plus a bit of hocus-pocus and enough latex monsters to fill a condom factory.  This one didn't fare quite as well as Conan the Barbarian, but in the plus department at least you can understand the words spoken by the lead character!  Lee Horsley never became a household name (or a gymnasium one, for that matter) but we have some top-shelf villains courtesy of a couple of Dicks: trusy ol' Richard Moll and Richard Lynch!  I give you The Sword and the Sorcerer, a great little cult classic with all the swashbuckling you could handle.  If you swashbuckle much.  I just buckle my shoes, and maybe the belt buckle if I'm slimming down.  No, I guess you really didn't need to know that, but hear this podcast and you'll be caught in its spell!  Kingdoms to save and women to love!! Yeah, you know it, Talon!

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Kiki Ebsen, Daughter of Buddy Ebsen, Singer/Songwriter, Musician, HumanitarianAbout Harvey's guest:Today's guest is not only the daughter of one of the most popular, beloved and iconic  Hollywood stars.  She's also a highly successful singer, songwriter, musician and recording artist.  Her father was the legendary actor and song and dance man, Buddy Ebsen, whose amazing career spanned 7 decades.  In movies, he did everything from dancing with Shirley Temple in “Captain January” and with Judy Garland in “Broadway Melody of 1938”, to playing Audrey Hepburn's husband in “Breakfast at Tiffany's”.  But he's best remembered for playing Jed Clampett on “The Beverly Hillbillies”, and later, as the star of the TV detective drama, “Barnaby Jones”, and as Lee Horsley's father in “Matt Houston”.   His daughter, the multi-talented Kiki Ebsen, has toured as a keyboard player and vocalist with some of the greats in the music business including Boz Scaggs, Michael McDonald, Al Jareau, Christopher Cross, and Peter Cetera, to name only a few.  She's recorded 8 critically acclaimed albums, including “Red”, “Cool Songs, volumes 1 and 2”, “Scarecrow Sessions”, which is my personal favourite, and her newest album, “Fill Me Up”.  And if that weren't enough, she's one of my heroes for the incredibly important humanitarian work she's doing with rescue horses at her beloved Healing Equine Ranch.  For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/https://kikiebsen.com/https://www.facebook.com/kikiebsenhttps://instagram.com/kikiebsenhttps://www.amazon.com/s?k=kiki+ebsen&ref=nb_sb_noss_1https://www.youtube.com/user/kikiebsenhttp://www.thehealingequineranch.com/https://www.facebook.com/thehealingequineranch/https://www.instagram.com/the.healing.equine.ranch/#KikiEbsen  #BuddyEbsen  #harveybrownstoneinterviews
