1990 was a wild, interesting time. The Cold War was nearing an end, the Berlin Wall was torn down, and people were still playing Battletech and Transformers. So, throw all of that into a giant blender, throw in some rah-rah corny dialogue and some robot combat that makes you actually appreciate the Pacific Rim sequel and you get a dish best served by this show. It's time to see if Robot Jox is not that bad. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In our search for more knowledge about the horror genre, the films we love, and the people behind them, many horror fans began their journey with reference books. Long before the internet, these books served as stepping stones, introducing fans to films they had never heard of and offering deeper insight into the people behind the movies they already knew and loved. It was like opening doors for the first time—or pushing open ones that had only been slightly ajar—allowing us to explore and learn so much more. In this episode, we welcome author Bryan Senn to the show to discuss these essential reference books. With over three decades of experience writing about sci-fi and horror in a variety of magazines—not to mention his own books on multiple subjects—Bryan brings a wealth of knowledge to the conversation. So sit back and enjoy—but keep a notepad handy, because you might want to jot down a few titles to track down! Send us a textEpisode 200 is here, and naturally, we celebrate this auspicious occasion by looking back at 1989's, Robot Jox. A movie both Liam and Rob loved as kids, and one that, despite it's cult status, proved to be a surprisingly influential movie. The question however remains (as is always the case on the Hey You Guys Podcast) - does this movie hold up today? Is this the underappreciated sci-fi classic we remember, or has time been especially unkind to Stuart Gordon's Cold War inspired giant robot brawler? Check out the link in the bio to find out.
Big ass robots fight for territories as an alternative to war in a dystopian future. Need I say more? Ok, fine! Chainsaw penis', transforming into tanks, rocket fists, a space chase, and barroom brawls! This one gets pretty dark for a kids film, but that's why we love the 80's! If that's not enough then stick around as we discuss the anime inspirations and the impact this film has made on cinema history. We're Robot Jox, CRASH AND BURN!

As 2024 comes to an end, we look in a rearview mirror filled with some amazing films, especially ones that came out this year. Filmmakers around the world wowed us with creative stories, intriguing plots and outstanding techniques. It is definitely a great time to be a horror fan. 2024 was another stellar year for us at the podcast, where we covered a wide variety of subjects, from Bigfoot to Amicus Films, from Women Directors to Al Adamson & Sam Sherman, to more obscure topics like German Expressionism, and much more. We also had an astonishing lineup of special guests including Severin's David Gregory, Vinegar Syndrome's Archivist Oscar Becher, HorrorHound's Aaron Crowell, and Will Morris from Oscarbate and The Music Box Theatre, just to name a few. One thing that continues through this year is our constant love and admiration for those that have made some long lasting impact on the genre, and our constant striving to help share that love with our listeners. Nothing excites us more than hearing that we've turned someone on to a film or filmmaker or even sub-genre that they might have not experienced before. And you can be damned sure that we plan to continue that in 2025. So join us in this extra long special episode as we go over our favorite viewings of this year, as well as some shout-outs and discussions on other films that came out in 2024. Stuart Gordon's post-apocalyptic sci-fi featuring gladiatorial battles between giant mechs has to be one of Empire Pictures' most instantly recognisable titles, sitting proudly on video rental stores worldwide. Starring Gary Graham and Anne-Marie Johnson as the brave robot jockeys and Paul Koslo as their ruthless enemy, Robot Jox could be the brightest and breeziest dystopian action movie ever made. It was also one of the most ambitious film Charles Band's mini-major studio ever attempted, and may have precipitated the fall of his Empire! But does it live up to our childhood memories? Or is it as cringe-inducing as a fondly remembered Saturday morning cartoon? Find out! Follow us on Tiktok, Facebook and Instagram. Less people get sat on by robots in war, I guess. So Robot Jox is a conglomeration of many other staples in 1989. You've got a post-apocalyptic setting thanks to the Cold War. You've got a sports related global event ala Rollerball, Deathrace 2000, Running Man, et. al. And you've got robots fighting ala Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots. Ok, maybe the last one was a stretch but you get the picture. Lastly, you've got a critical factor. George Lucas. Yes, Lucas made all the money when he kept the licensing rights to the Star Wars franchise and then became the richest man in the galaxy when the toy line was released. Well, Charles Band hoped for no less. With the meteoric rise of The Transformers and subsequent collapse when the killed Optimus Prime within the first 10 seconds of the movie, Charlie say an opportunity to sell giant robots IF the movie Robot Jox was successful. Narrator: It was not. Oh well. But it does add a very interesting connection to another film that wanted to make all the toys - Megaforce. But that's not where the connections stop. There's much thumb gesturing, a general friendship/enemyship between the sides, the general tone and aesthetic, each have Tex characters, a lead that's just a big cheesedick (ok that's a lot of movies), a useless and vague system of resolving conflicts between nations and a female love interest/agitator to the lead that bear strong resemblances to each other. So as to the film. Well.... its a very interesting world for a PA movie. With most being just roving hordes of bandits running through the desert in junker cars attacking scantily clad women until a lone warrior comes to town. This world is actually more like something out of a sci-fi book with subtle geo-political themes and technological ideas that....well... sadly, go completely unfulfilled and unexplored. The creepiness of the butt hole lead are far more developed and way overindulged. How about some positives? Well the effects are some of the best I've seen from a Charlie Band film. The stop-motion animation brings these colossal robots to life with a fluidity and realism that still holds up today, making the combat sequences believable and genuine. The miniatures themselves are well designed and the fight sequences are gonna give your robot fighting fan all that's wanted for a non-cgi film. "Robot Jox" is a delightfully goofy, visually impressive film that sparkles but doesn't ever shine. The stunning miniature work and stop-motion animation make it a must-watch for fans of practical effects, and while the protagonist and plot leave much to be desired, they somehow add to the film's quirky appeal. If you're looking for a fun, nostalgic trip with a healthy dose of 80s sci-fi flair, "Robot Jox" is the perfect pick. But for us....we're gonna stay on Team Megaforce.

It's time for Patreon supporter, and co-host of the Star Wars Clone Conversations podcast, Maff to make his pick and it's the 1989 dystopian future movie, Robot Jox. Robot Jox blends elements of action, adventure, and futuristic technology. Directed by Stuart Gordon, the film's production faced numerous challenges, particularly in bringing its ambitious vision of giant robotic gladiators to life on the screen. Utilizing a combination of practical effects, miniatures, and stop-motion animation, the production team created impressive battle sequences that showcased the massive scale and power of the film's mechanized combatants. Additionally, the film's production benefited from the talents of its cast, including Gary Graham and Anne-Marie Johnson, who brought depth and authenticity to their roles as pilots controlling the giant robots known as "robot jox." Despite its modest budget, Robot Jox succeeded in delivering a visually stunning and action-packed spectacle that captivated audiences with its imaginative world-building and thrilling fight scenes. The film's unique blend of practical effects and innovative storytelling techniques cemented its status as a cult classic within the science fiction genre, earning a dedicated fanbase and influencing future filmmakers. While "Robot Jox" may not have achieved widespread commercial success upon its initial release, its enduring popularity and cultural impact have solidified its place in the pantheon of beloved sci-fi classics. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: In a world devastated by nuclear war, nations have abandoned conventional warfare in favor of settling conflicts through gladiatorial battles fought by towering machines called "robot jox." Among these pilots is Achilles, a skilled warrior representing the Western Market. His fierce rivalry with Alexander, the Eastern Market's champion, escalates when a tragic accident during their match leaves Achilles devastated and haunted by guilt. Vowing never to fight again, Achilles retreats from the arena. However, as tensions between the two markets reach a boiling point, Achilles is reluctantly drawn back into the arena for a final showdown. With the fate of humanity at stake, Achilles must confront his past and overcome his inner demons to emerge victorious in the ultimate battle between man and machine. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

After the collapse of Empire, Stuart Gordon's ROBOT JOX got a delayed release under a new distributor, and Charles Band was quick to respond with not one but two films that marketed themselves as direct follow-ups to Gordon's mech-battling adventure, even if that wasn't exactly true. 1990's CRASH & BURN is more of a locked-room murder mystery than a mech fighter, and 1993's ROBOT WARS, while definitely delivering on it's title, shares very little plot similarities with JOX, and even recycles some cast members in new roles. We're digging into both of these with returning guest John Torrani, the world's foremost expert on all things ROBOT JOX! In the before times... before CGI... before Michael Bay gave us racist Transformers... before Pacific Rim... there was another giant 80s style robot beat-em-up movie that brought the Saturday Morning Cartoons of our youth to life! That movie is ROBOT JOX! Joining me to review this cult classic is a podcaster who's seen his fair share of 80s robots... Ozzie from The Frank Welker Wonder Hour. Go give them a follow and tell 'em Matt and Mark sent you. Ozzie and I discuss the film and praise its director, Stuart Gordon... but along the way, we also chat Charlie Band, the nostalgia of discovering movies on VHS, and what exactly in the fresh hell is going on in the many subplots of this movie when giant robots aren't beating the crap out of one another. There's a lot of lore left lying around... CRASH AND BURN! Support our show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheMattandMarkMovieShow . If you made a mashup of Shat The Movies films, "The Blood of Heroes" might be the result. It has a dose of "Mad Max," a pinch of "Blade Runner," two tablespoons of "Robot Jox" and just a hint of "The Sandlot." Definitely an acquired taste. Rutger Hauer returns to a dark, wet dystopia in this 1989 sci-fi cult classic that spawned the real-life game of Jugger and reminded Dick Ebert of all the niche sports he discovered in the early days of the pandemic. "The Blood of Heroes" piqued the Shat Crew's curiosity in a way few movies have, leading to questions about post-apocalyptic aristocracy, water conservation, armor design, measuring time in stones, nerd dream girls and the logistic of carrying large furniture as luggage. This week, we're suiting up to pilot our first Stuart Gordon film, ROBOT JOX! Gordon is one of the most beloved directors in the Empire / Full Moon stable, and this underrated mech-fighting action/sci-fi romp puts his abilities on full display. Joining us for this episode is film industry expert John Torrani, who boasts not only an impressive knowledge of the genre but one of the preeminent collections of ROBOT JOX memorabilia in the world! This week we're looking at one of the most prominent of the latter-day Full Moon Features, the lowbrow stoner comedy EVIL BONG. This film sees four roommates battling the titular paraphernalia, who transports them to a sinister strip club populated by other Full Moon characters. Would you believe, though, that this movie is kinda dumb? Welcome to Subspecies Week on Kevin Lane's Spill Your Guts!A new episode every day until Thursday, June 1st exploring Ted Nicolaou's iconic saga with the creator and stars. Our guest today is the not only the writer and director of the Subspecies series but also one of the genres greatest gonzo filmmakers. He has an extensive history in the genre beginning as the location sound recordist on Tobe Hooper's seminal classic “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and an editor for longtime creative collaborator Charles Band on Empire and Full Moon classics like “Tourist Trap”, “Ghoulies”, “Trancers”, Stuart Gordon's “Robot Jox” and “Crash and Burn”. In 1986 he wrote and directed the whacky and entirely fun cult classic “TerrorVision” and it was clear to Charles Band that he had found himself a real deal genre maestro. That filmmaker was Ted Nicolaou and his next film after “TerrorVision” was the original “Subspecies”. As Ted tells it, the original “Subspecies” shoot in Romania was more or less a nightmare. Ted would once again prove his vision and endurance when not only did he survive the ordeal that was shooting the film, he created one of Full Moon's biggest hits. The rest is Subspecies history and we're going to uncover all of it here. From the original film to the back to back shot sequels filmed in 1993 when Full Moon was shining it's brightest to the 4th film for a transitioning and somewhat troubled Full Moon to fan favorite spin off “Vampire Journals”, Ted is the creative vision behind it all. Spill your guts is proud to present a conversation with the man behind the bloodstone, Ted Nicolaou. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
