Quiet is the word of the day at The Odditorium, a curio shop of Oddities, rare trinkets, and some enchanted items. Not much is happening in the world of the arcane. Kinda just an average day. It makes sense; the arcane leylines had been off a bit for the past week, so there's not much interest in investing in the odd curiosities of the world. But Poppy, the owner and founder of “The Odditorium”, doesn't notice or also seem to care. She's happy and content in her backroom, working as usual while several Homunculus Servants tend to the store. That is until she receives a message from the Verdan Grove Library asking for help. Joe Coleman, the legendary artist whose work digs into the darkest corners of the human psyche, joins us in the Crypt to discuss everything from painting serial killers like Carl Panzram, Albert Fish, and Ed Gein, to sharing the secrets of his controversial art. Join us as we delve into the contradictory beauty of the grotesque and the divine. Joe takes us inside his Odditorium, a personal collection as eerie as his paintings, where he houses macabre artifacts like a painting by John Wayne Gacy, the actual letter Albert Fish sent to Grace Budd's mother, a lock of Charles Manson's hair, and a Christmas card from Ed Gein. These relics serve as a tangible connection, DNA, to the energy that Joe channels into his art. We explore the paradoxes of life and death that permeate Joe's art, discuss his fascination with the redacted stories of the Bible, the corruption of the soul and flesh, and dive into his experiences selling art to icons like HR Giger, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Iggy Pop. –
For my 600th episode, the great artist Joe Coleman joins the show to celebrate his phenomenal new career-spanning retrospective book, A DOORWAY TO JOE: The Art of Joe Coleman (Fantagraphics). We talk about art, mortality, mythography, history, the corruption of the flesh, the nature of evil, his Odditorium & the power of relics, Dr. Mombooze-o's send-off for his dead parents, playing Whac-A-Mole with T-cell lymphoma, getting arrested for being an Infernal Machine, taxi-driving in NYC's Travis Bickle era, the inspiration of the Hubble telescope, the pagan Celtic roots in Irish Catholicism, what it's like to work on one square-inch of a painting for 8 hours at a time, our respective appearances on the Uncle Floyd Show, playing in the Steel Tips with Patrick McDonnell & Karen O'Connell, and how he found his love and muse in Whitney Ward. (Also, this one's got an interminable intro, so jump to the 15:45 mark to start the conversation.) Synopsis Oddity is a morality tale about why you shouldn't cross witchy women. When a blind woman's sister is murdered in a remote country estate, she uses her arcane knowledge and abilities to uncover the true identity of her murderer. Review of Oddity I really liked this movie. It came under the radar and we almost didn't review it, but I'm glad we did, because I think I actually did like this one better than Longlegs. The film starts out basically with a prologue of what you see in the trailer, and acts as a really taut short film. A Woman answers the door to a creepy one eyed man that says that she's not safe inside and needs to let him in. We are given just enough information to make this situation plausible and build dread. That is a common thread through the film. We are given just enough information to constantly be uneasy and uncertain throughout the whole film. It really is structurally impressive, plot-wise. There isn't a ton of character development, but there is a constant stream of revelations and situations that keep the film engaging. One criticism may be that there isn't much of an emotional element in the film, the characters all seem very cold. However, each character has enough of a personality and backstory to make their interactions and decisions interesting. There are several moments and lines that had me laughing out loud, including the ending. There were also some really effective jumpscares. On the surface, this movie utilizes a lot of tropes that are crutches for a lot of supernatural horror movies. The spooky dark house. The strange sounds in the darkness. Stretches of tense silence leading up to jump scares. But for some reason, instead of rolling my eyes, I was truly engaged with this movie. I think it's because all of the reality-based elements seem plausible, and all the supernatural elements seem interesting or novel. I think it's a great movie, and honestly I don't have any real criticisms or anything that bothered me with it. Score 10/10 Interview with Amber Victoria from The Skeleton Key Odditorium Bryce: Today, we welcome Amber Victoria, owner and operator of the Skeleton Key Auditorium Museum and Oddity Shop in Portland, Oregon. It's a retail shop that specializes in oddities, antiques, curiosities, Gothic art, gifts, crystals, tarot cards, dolls, metaphysical items, clothing, and souvenirs. The auditorium is a historical museum designed to provide intrigue and a better understanding of the human experience through exploring the strange, unusual, and gloomy characteristics of our history. It was recently voted as the runner-up for Portland's Best Museum, just underneath the multi-million dollar Portland Art Museum and OMSI. So, it's pretty high praise for a museum. Anyways, welcome, Amber Victoria! Sydney: Welcome! Amber: Hello. Yay, thank you. Thank you for having me. Bryce: So, Amber, why don't you tell us a little bit about how you got started? What's the story with you and the Skeleton Key? Amber: Well, it kind of started almost 10 years ago. I've always loved old things and was more of a Ren fair kind of person. I was doing immersion events and collected a lot of odd things. Eventually, I started collecting too much stuff, so I began selling items at Curiosities Vintage Mall about nine years ago. It just evolved from there. People really liked my odd things, so I decided to open a brick-and-mortar shop in 2020. And here we are, still doing it. Bryce: So, when did you open the brick-and-mortar shop? Amber: I opened it in 2020 on Belmont. It was a small oddity shop, about 600 square feet. When the lease was up, we moved downtown, and I brought my partner along. We decided to open a museum because there was so much knowledge and so many items. People were always asking questions, and we wanted to educate and preserve these items in a fun, interactive space full of oddities. Bryce: Awesome.

Many claim that St. Augustine, Florida is one of the most haunted cities in all of America. We are willing to believe that based on our experiences there and considering that the city has been settled for over 450 years, its a defendable claim. One of the oldest structures here and most unique in architectural styling is Ripley's Odditorium. This was once the Castle Warden and stories of hauntings here have persisted for years. Join us as we share the history and hauntings of Ripley's Odditorium. This week we're taking a trip to the beach - Ocean City, MD for some Thrashers Fries and Ripley's Believe It Or Not! Both the Odditorium and the Mirror Maze are on the agenda, and we're joined by the returning CHRISTIAN SULLIVAN! (Who you may remember from Episode 15 at the Maryland State Fair, where he literally helped save someone's life.) Ocean City is a second home to Sully. We reminisce about his childhood connections to the beach & boardwalk, talk about why it's healthy to acknowledge that we're not always happy, and get lost in a maze. We also explore the world of the paranormal - like is Ripley's haunted, and do we even believe ghosts? A Voodoo Curse Box, Human Skull Coffee Mug, and Shrunken Head are on display; and don't miss the part where I eat a cricket and give you the live play by play. At the time, five years ago, it seemed like another forgettable gig. Todd Weakley's band shared a bill at the The Odditorium in West Asheville with a duo -- Ryan Anderson and his brother. Weakley remembers Anderson approaching and introducing himself. "And my initial impression was like 'Oh no, it's gonna one of those shows,'" Weakley recalled. "But when he played, I was absolutely transfixed and I felt compelled to know more about this person."

Joined today by the iconic, world-renowned painter, writer, and performer New York Artist Joe Coleman and the godfather of true crime writing, Harold Schechter. In a rare interview, Joe tells us about his friendship with the late Anthony Bourdain, that famous final episode that he was featured on, how it happened and what Tony meant to him. We hear how Joe and Harold, met and if I can join their circle of friends. Harold keeps us up to date on his life: hint (becoming a grandfather, authoring a new series of books and Red Dead Redemption 2) – not in that order. Joe opens up and lets us know how growing up in an Irish Catholic environment led him to paint some of the world’s most intricate and jaw dropping paintings, what brought him to the Big Apple in the 70’s and what he misses about those times. Of course we talk about the secret Odditorium and the artifacts in there such as Albert Fish’s famous gruesome letter, Ed Gein’s Christmas card and Charles Manson’s hair. From Harold being a pallbearer at Joe’s wedding to Joe’s celebrity clientele. Joe and Harold leave us all speechless and wanting more. William C. Anderson This week on The Final Straw, we are super pleased to present a talk given at the most recent Asheville Anarchist Bookfair by William C. Anderson, who co authored the book As Black As Resistance with Zoe Samudzi. The talk he is giving here is based heavily on the first chapter of the book called Black in Anarchy, and in addition to laying the groundwork of how he and Samudzi wrote the book, he speaks about the truly conditional nature of so called “citizenship” that many people living in the US face, the continuing evolution of race and the reliance of white supremacy to Black subjugation, and he places Blackness in proximity to Anarchy, and much more. From the back cover: “As Black As Resistance makes the case for a new program of self-defense and transformative politics for Black Americans, one rooted in an anarchistic framework that the authors liken to the Black experience itself. This is not a book of compromise, nor does it negotiate with intolerance. It is a manifesto for everyone who is ready to continue progressing towards liberation for all people.” We hope you will enjoy this talk, and if you are curious about the book As Black As Resistance by Zoe Samudzi and William C. Anderson, you can head over to AK Press to learn more! Cory Doctorow on Post-Scarcity & Sci-Fi This week, we present an interview that Bursts conducted with the sci-fi and picture book author, technologist and social critic Cory Doctorow. Cory is an editor of the blog BoingBoing, a fellow at the Electronic Frontier Foundation and his most recent book is entitled Walkaway, out from Head of Zeus and TOR books. The novel plays with themes of open source technologies, class society, post-scarcity economics, ecological remediation, drop-out culture and liberatory social models. It was released a few days ago in paperback, along with matching re-issues of his other adult sci-fi novels. For the hour, they chat about themes from the book, sharing, trans-humanism, imagination and monsters. To find more work by Cory, check out his blog craphound.com. You can also find him on twitter, free writings on Project Gutenberg, his content on archive.org, or his podcast. Due to technical difficulties, we have no Sean Swain segment this week. We hope this will be remedied next episode. For a slightly longer version of this episode, make sure to check out the podcast version. ANNOUNCES NC Resists the Grand Jury, Donate to Katie Yow! In July of 2017, long-time activist Katie Yow received a subpoena to testify before a grand jury in North Carolina. The subject of this grand jury has been revealed to be what the government has described as a bombing at the GOP headquarters in Hillsborough, NC this past fall. Katie has expressed no knowledge of any relevant information to this alleged event, yet is continuing to resist the inquiries of this proceeding. Grand juries are not regular trials, but rather operate in secrecy where normal rules of evidence do not apply. The prosecutor runs the proceedings and no judge is present. This type of proceeding has been used as tools of the State to isolate, divide, and destroy social movements since the 1960's. They have been used to sow distrust and coerce information from the Chicano, Puerto Rican, and Black liberation movements, the anti-war movement, and more recently the environmental, animal rights, and anarchist movements. They are currently especially being wielded against anarchists, anti-fascists, and indigenous water protectors who struggled at Standing Rock. But we have powerful tools as well, those of resolute silence, courageous refusal, and fierce solidarity. In honor of her principles and the different world we struggle for together, Katie is refusing to cooperate with this witchhunt. In addition to legal support, navigating the possibility of an unknown amount of jail time, away from work, can be expensive. Please consider making a donation to support Katie's refusal to participate in the grand jury by going to the support page. You can learn more about this case and keep abreast of updates by going to NC Resists the Grand Jury. Getting Ready for Cville with It's Going Down Regular listeners to The Final Straw Radio, and anyone who's clued in to southern antifascism, will be aware that there is opposition planned to a Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville Virginia next Saturday, August 12th. For any folks still feeling uncertain of what is going on and who will be there, there is an excellent article on It's Going Down about the specifics of all the Neo Nazi, white nationalist, and all around bonehead alt righters who may be showing their miserable faces in Cville on the 12th, plus some context for why these fashies are dragging themselves out from behind their computer screens in the first place. You'll get to read about such charmers as the Traditionalist Worker Party, Identity Europa, plus Neo Nazi Jason Kessler, local to Cville, who is one of the brains behind this march in the first place, plus many others. PANSY FEST If you can't make Charlottesville but will be in the Asheville area, consider Pansy Fest. Pansy Fest is a new queer and trans DIY music and arts fest in Asheville, NC, August 11-12th. Proceeds will go towards two beneficiaries: Beloved House and Southerners on New Ground. On August 11th, at Static Age Records in downtown Asheville at 7pm there'll be a show who's lineup includes Bryan Estelle, Crooked Ghost, Sister Mantos and many more. On August 12th, from 12-3pm at Firestorm Books & Coffee in West Asheville, there'll be workshops and a band panel. At 7pm at the Odditorium another show will ensue with bands including Brief Awakening, Laser Beams, Ghastly & Cloudgayzer. Asheville Solidarity Rally with Millions for Prisoners Human Rights March on Washington DC The 13th Amendment of the US Constitution still allows slavery, creating an increasing population of caged people who provide free or near-free labor to stockholders of the Prison Industrial Complex and profiteers of mass incarceration. As a result, American jobs are lost and job-seekers are victimized because private industry cannot compete with involuntary servitude. Therefore, citizens of Asheville North Carolina invite you to a Solidarity Rally with Millions for Prisoners Human Rights March on Washington DC. There, we will peacefully assemble to let Congress know, it is time to end slavery once and for all, delete the exception clause in the 13th Amendment authorizing prison slavery, and stop profiteering in its tracks - because all workers deserve living wages. All Asheville and Buncombe County residents are invited--especially our elected representatives and those running for office this election season. Voters, your constituents, want to know where you stand on this matter. When: August 19th at 11:30 AM Where: Pack Square Park (In front of City Hall) This event is organized by Asheville Black Lives Matter, Blue Ridge Anarchist Black Cross (BRABC), and Zamani Refuge African Cultural Center, with more endorsements forthcoming. Heartwood "is a regional network that protects forests and supports community activism in the eastern United States through education, advocacy, and citizen empowerment. We are people helping people protect the places they love. Heartwood was founded in 1991, when concerned citizens from several midwestern states each defending their national forest from logging, mining, roads and ruin, met and began to work together to protect the heartland hardwood forest." They'll be holding their "Strong Roots", the 27th Forest Council from May 26-29 at Camp Spring Creek, 774 Spring Creek Rd, Bakersville, North Carolina, the heart of the Katuah Bioregion. Interviews with Queen Tahiyrah and Franklin López This episode contains two segments: In the first, Bursts spoke with Queen Tahiyrah about the hunger strike being engaged by Imam Siddique Abdullah Hasan and Jason Robb, two death row inmates put there by their attempt to resolved the hostage taking involved in the 1993 Lucasville Prison Uprising. During the uprising, Jason Robb and Hasan acted as negotiators for the prisoners as representatives of the Aryan Nation prison gang and Muslim prisoners, respectively, at the facility. More on their case can be found at http://lucasvilleamnesty.org. Check out Queen Tahiyrah's podcast, entitled SiGnOtHeTiMeS. We apologize that the beginning of Queen Tahiyrah's interview sounds crappy - that was a technical fail on our part - but it clears up after about 2 minutes. In the second segment, Bursts chatted with Franklin López about Submedia, the importance of anarchist media production, his upcoming anarchist hip hop podcast, and the new short documentary series they're about to start releasing entitled Trouble. Trouble is available for public showings, so find yourself a venue in town, contact Frankie and company via, pass word of the event in town via flyers and word of mouth and antisocial media and make some friends where you're at! The first episode will focus on diversity of tactics at Stand Rock with a focus on the Red Warrior Camp. More work by Frankie can be found at https://submedia.tv. This will be at the Lazy Diamond at 98-A N Lexington Ave in downtown Asheville. Rebel! Rebuild! Rewild! call for submissions The Rebel! Rebuild! Rewild! Collective has put out a call for submissions of texts about strategic lessons that can be learned from the resistance at Standing Rock. As one phase of the resistance has ended and another has begun, the idea is to compile experiences and analyses and reflect on the lessons learned from this game-changing moment in movement history. This project is mostly for the benefit of those who were not present at Standing Rock but who might participate in something similar in the future. The plan is to publish a compilation of thoughtful strategic analyses, both online and in print. However, seeing as it might not be possible to publish everything that people submit, the plan is to put an unedited version of everything that folks submit onto a wordpress site sometime in the future. The call is to write about anything you'd like to, but some leading questions are: Which actions were most effective? Which actions were least effective? Do you have any insights on dynamics between indigenous and non-indigenous water protectors? What was unifying? What was divisive? What can we learn from the tactics of DAPL, the police, and the state? What can we learn from the legal battle? What message would you like to pass on to future water protectors? Please submit writing to rebelrebuildrewild@riseup.net. Submissions can be signed with your legal name, an alias, or be anonymous. Please include whatever information about yourself that you consider relevant. Art by Julie Maas (borrowed from http://www.nightslantern.ca/) Playlist
This week we spoke with Romina and César, who are two members of the Black Rose Anarchist Federation in LA. Bands include: Gullible Boys; Mother Moses; Maitland +more TBA Water Crisis in PA Prisons Since August of 2016, Mumia Abu-Jamal and other Inmates at the State Correctional Facility in Mahanoy, Pennsylvania, have been plagued with unsafe drinking and bath water. For several months now, inmates have complained about brown, oily water in both the showers and the faucets of their cells. This has been an on-and-off problem from August 2016 to this very day. One of the inmates at SCI Mahonoy, Lorenzo Cat Johnson, when asked of the matter, stated that one week the water seems good and another week, when run, the water seems to go from the color gray to the color brown. As recently as last week in a conversation with MOVE Political Prisoner Edward Africa, Eddie was asked what he did for water and he stated that he obtained his water from a hot water filter that was on his cell block. So other than the alternative to obtain a little water from a hot water filter, men are being forced to shower and wash in brown water. Eddie stated that the only time inmates can get bottled water is when they are on a visit in the visiting room. All the while, prison staff are being provided bottled water at SCI Mahanoy and are being told not to drink the water because it's unsafe. Mumia Abu-Jamal, who is suffering from a very serious skin condition due to Hepatitis C, is required to take specialized baths in the prison infirmary, but has not been able to take these baths due to the water hazard. Grievances have been filed on this matter, but to no avail--the water situation has not been resolved. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH On March 6, 2017 there will be a National Day of Action aimed at both Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf and Department of Corrections Secretary John Wetzel. The power is in the hands of the people; the only way to make these officials respond is through massive public pressure, so we are upping the ante. From 9 am to 12 noon, folks are being asked to call, fax, and tweet theoffice of Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf. (P) (717)787-2500 (F) (717) 772-8284 (Twitter) @GovernorTomWolf From 1 to 3 pm, folks are being asked to call, email, and tweet Department of Corrections Secretary John Wetzel. Interview This week we are rebroadcasting an interview with Peter Werbe of Fifth Estate magazine, which originally aired in February 2015. Fifth Estate is an “anarchist, anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian, anti-profit project” which is published cooperatively three times a year, and this year marks its 50th year of publication. The magazine tackles current events, issues, theory, and praxis which would be of interest to an anarchist audience. To find out more about this project, and to subscribe, you can visit http://www.fifthestate.org In this interview we talk about the magazine's historical trajectory, from its inception in 1965 as a weekly, less political periodical, to its takeover by anarchists in 1975, to what it is today. They talk about the Eat The Rich Gang and its associations with Fifth Estate magazine, as well as directions the project could take. For more on Peter Werbe's radio work, you can visit http://www.peterwerbe.com Announcements The founder of the crisis hotline Trans Lifeline is being detained by immigration authorities in Arizona after being stopped while driving home to Chicago. Nina Chaubal, 25, an India-born Chicagoan and the co-founder of Trans Lifeline (a San Francisco-based non-profit), was driving to Chicago from California on Interstate-8 with her wife and two friends when the group encountered an immigration checkpoint in Arizona on Wednesday. There, officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained Chaubal and demanded she show them her passport (Chaubal was carrying her Illinois drivers license at the time, but not her passport, because she was traveling through the United States and not crossing international borders, so she provided ICE with a photo of her passport) and that she provide proof that she is married to a U.S. citizen. They then took her into custody after learning that her gender identity did not match the gender listed on her Indian passport and that she was in the country on an expired work visa. Chaubal's family and friends are urging ICE to release Chaubal, who has been held since Wednesday by ICE in two Arizona immigration detention facilities. She is currently being held at Eloy Detention Center in Eloy, Arizona—a privately operated prison with a disturbing reputation for violence against LGBT detainees. Chaubal's wife is pushing to have her released—reasoning that the well-known activist and non-profit founder should not be imprisoned and is not a flight risk—or at least transferred to another detention center with a better track record for treating LGBT people. She is also urging friends, family and supporters to help amplify her voice by contacting ICE with these requests. To hear more about this situation, and to contact ICE in various ways about their treatment of Nina Chaubal, you can visit the website http://messica.codes/freenina/ To learn more about Trans Lifeline and to donate to this project, you can visit http://www.translifeline.org/ -------------- On Jan 5th, 2017, The Odditorium in Asheville will be hosting a benefit concert for the newly-formed Blue Ridge Anarchist Black Cross starting at 9pm. This week on The Final Straw Radio, I spoke with Mars Goetia. Mars is, among other things, a musician, parent and anarchist who's been doing a lot of thinking and working around conflict engagement in and around anarchist communities. In this episode, Mars and I speak about about the difficulty of language when engaging in interpersonal conflict, about state repression, expectations and more. Announces: In June we aired 2 conversations with members of the Turkish group DAF, Revolutionary Anarchist Action. Among the three voices featured was that of Hüseyin Civan, the managing editor of Mayden Magazine. Hüseyin has been sentenced to 15 months in prison by the Turkish government for Mayden articles in support of Kurdish struggles for autonomy and against state repression in Turkey. This sentencing comes amid a very troubling time in Turkey. Following the Turkish government's reversal of seeking peace with Kurdish groups in the country's eastern regions, a failed coup earlier this year, the grab at increasing presidential control and prerogerative, non-secular regime of Tayip Erdogan has resumed military incursions into Kurdish communities and purged educational institutions and media of critical voices. They even went so far as to allow Daesh fighters across their border to fight Kurds and anti-capitalists and have launched attacks across the Syrian border into Rojava. To contact DAF to offer solidarity to Hüseyin, you can visit http://anarsistfaaliyet.org On Jan 5th, 2017, The Odditorium in Asheville will be hosting a benefit concert for the newly-formed Blue Ridge Anarchist Black Cross starting at 9pm. Come early for a Security Culture 101/201 training where folks'll talk about things you need to keep your community safe. The lineup includes: Secret Shame, Nomadic War Machine, Kangarot & Cloudgayzer Playlist: http://www.ashevillefm.org/node/18639

The Dandy Warhols first met Bowie because he was singing along. It was Glastonbury in 2000, and the band looked to the side of the stage during their set to see Bowie and his band, in their black suits, belting along. In 2002, Bowie headlined the Meltdown Festival in London, and he invited the Dandies to be the first band since Lou Reed to share his stage. Then he took them on tour as his opening act. Then he came out to shoot pool and jam with them in their Portland warehouse, the Odditorium. In other words, the Dandies probably came closer into the orbit of the star that was Bowie than any other Portlanders. Band members Courtney Taylor-Taylor, Zia McCabe, and Peter Homlstrom told us what it was like to know the man.
