How do art conservators save video art from obsolescence? If a painting on canvas rips or a marble sculpture shatters to pieces, art conservators are trained to respond accordingly and repair it. Artworks that unfold over time – like videos and software based works – are a different thing altogether. These artworks are made using cutting-edge technologies that are constantly being updated. If the “canvas” or medium an artwork is made on keeps shifting, how do art conservators protect these works from obsolescence? Guests: Jonathan Farbowitz, time-based media conservator Jennifer and Kevin McCoy, artists Ho Tzu Nyen, artist Nora Kennedy, Sherman Fairchild Conservator In Charge, Photograph Conservation Featured artworks: Thomas Tompion (clockmaker) Jasper Braem (case), Longcase clock with calendrical, lunar, and tidal indications, also known as the Graves Tompion, ca. 1677–80: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/209296 Jennifer and Kevin McCoy, Every Shot, Every Episode, 2001: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/284985 Ho Tzu Nyen, The Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia, 2017–present: https://cdosea.org Cover art: Joseph Knibb (clockmaker), Longcase clock with calendar, ca. 1680–85: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/205601 For a transcript of the episode and more information, visit metmuseum.org/immaterialtime #MetImmaterial Immaterial is produced by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Magnificent Noise and hosted by Camille Dungy. How did one tree become a world-famous tonewood for guitars? Deep in the forests of Belize, a wood importer from Florida discovered a rare tree that produced a sound unlike anything guitar virtuosos had ever heard before. An archaeologist and an artist walk into a dump… For most of us, we throw our garbage to the curb, and it disappears from our lives. But to some, that's just the beginning of trash's story. What can the tiny chia seed reveal about the history of oil painting? For centuries, one of the most prized mediums of art at museums like the Met has been oil painting, a European tradition embodied by the so-called "old masters." This is the story of how the oil of the chia seed — yes, the same one that's a staple add-on for smoothies and acai bowls — and its origins in Mexico could help us look at oil painting and our world with fresh eyes. Today, Frame of Mind is featuring an episode from another podcast from The Met, Immaterial. Each episode tells the stories of artists' materials to explore how and why people make art. In this episode, we cover stone. Throughout art museums around the world, you'll find ancient stone statues of rulers and marble monuments immortalizing noblemen. These objects were made to survive decay and destruction, to remain intact and whole. But from the moment that stone is extracted from the earth, it is bound to become a more fragmented version of itself–chiseled, chipped, and sometimes shattered over time. In this episode, we examine the many ways that stone breaks. How can a statue's cracks and cavities tell a more complex story of our humanity? Guests: Jack Soultanian, Conservator, Objects Conservation, The Met Carolyn Riccardelli, Conservator, Objects Conservation, The Met Robert Macfarlane, nature writer and mountaineer Erhan Tamur, former Andrew W. What is hidden in the 'empty' spaces of an art museum? The Met is more than a museum of art. It is a city unto itself: population 2,000, with a transient population of 5 million. The Met is 21 buildings nested together like puzzle pieces, and it takes 400,000 light bulbs to illuminate all the spaces. But who actually changes those light bulbs? In this episode, peek behind the curtain and meet the people who maintain the hidden ecosystem of The Met. Guests: Marco Leona, David H. Susan, your host, welcomes Michelle Ann Collins to today's episode. Michelle is the founder of Inhabit Joy, where she partners with individuals who have suffered grief, injury, or other types of loss as they recover, reclaim their wholeness, and build resilience for life's inevitable challenges. After a series of losses, including the death of her mother, her husband's suicide, and continued estrangements from primary family members, Michelle combined the tools she had collected as a yoga therapist and wellness coach and studies in positive psychology, neuroscience, meditation and mindfulness, and spirituality to turn post-traumatic stress disorder into post-traumatic growth and resilience. With the addition of a certification in grief education and several bestselling books in which she shares her story, Michelle is helping others transform from barely surviving to joyful thriving. Key Takeaways: Michelle shares her grief story when the love of her life died by suicide. Losing someone to suicide is a completely different grief. Guilt is involved in every death, even more in one that resulted from suicide. Thinking “If only” gives you absolutely nothing, you can't change what happened. Suffering happens in the space between where you are and where you want to be. Demystifying through the obituary, starting to talk openly about suicide. There are parts of society that believe that suicide is a sin. Change the term “committed” suicide to died by suicide. Let's talk about death more, we need to be better educated about it. Let go of the why. Michelle talks about her books and her mission as a Joy Spreader. Train for grief so that when you are faced with it, you will be ready. Michelle advises: You don't have to do everything all at once. Take care of yourself, and be your best friend. Get help! No question, our teachers are heroes. During two years of pandemic disruption they've cycled through teaching remotely, teaching in person, and teaching both ways simultaneously. “Over the last two years, one of the biggest changes has been how often we have an update that changes things,” says Ann Collins, who serves as the principal of the Hugh Gregg Elementary School in the Corning-Painted Post, NY Area School District. National studies indicate that teachers are feeling the stress. “I do believe, that behind the scenes, it takes a huge toll. I think that there is a level of--I don't know--exhaustion, I suppose. But I don't believe it's detrimental to the work that they do with children because they continue to find their joy in teaching children,” she says. We don't have to have children in school to show appreciation for what teachers have been doing. And there's no reason to wait until the PTA-sponsored Teacher Appreciation Week in May. “We don't need a parade. We don't need those,” Principal Collins says. “But certainly some acknowledgment that they serve a very big role in our community, and that it has been challenging.” It turns out that a simple note of thanks now could encourage a teacher for years to come. That's because many teachers save those notes. “We pull them out. There are days that you need to remember you made a difference in somebody's life,” she says. “You have them, and you have a career's worth of them, but right now they are incredibly valuable, and they keep us going. I feel like they bridge us to what hopefully will be like a ‘normal' that will come again someday.” Listen to my full conversation with Principal Ann Collins in this 10-minute Inside Out podcast.

Our final episode in this mini-series is all about how we can create energy by tapping into creative activities, which is one of the strategies suggested by Emilyand Amelia Nagosky, in their work referenced in the previous episodes. Combining her experience in education and coaching, Ann suggests that in the field of coaching and personal development, we can learn a lot in this area from analysing what teachers do everyday: help children to operate in a zone of high energy and creativity. She suggests that we can make use of their methods and she gives us three steps to use this on a daily basis to achieve your goals and create the energy that you need. Finally, she argues that energy is the new capital! It can't be bought, outsourced or automated - we need to know how to create and protect our own energy levels in order to start living our legacy. Maya Angelou provides a great recipe to thriving and not surviving: "My mission in life is not merely to survive but thrive; and to do so with some passion, some humour and some style."This second episode of the special series called Elevate Your Energy draws on Angelou's insight (although there's no style advice!). Following on from the previous episode in the series, Ann delves further into why "me time" rarely helps in the long term and why focusing on time management requires a different approach if we want to elevate our energy and feel less emotionally exhausted. An episode about reframing time and energy in the recent 5 Day Challenge is referenced in the podcast: Day 2 Time to put yourself at the top of your to-do list. Tune in to find out some very simple questions you can ask yourself that might help you to move out of the emotional exhaustion cycle. Welcome to our special series on energy! Feeling exhausted, emotionally drained and not being able to shift that feeling, is something that a number of people have spoken to me about recently. Of course, we could attribute a lot of it to living through a pandemic, but many would agree that it was present before COVID hit. In this first episode, I'm exploring the solutions that many of us suggest to ourselves, notably around time management: the need for "me-time". Interestingly, it's quite far removed from what research suggests. Tune in to find out some practical ways to bridge the gap and propose better solutions to yourself with a couple of easy techniques that you use right now. I refer to a book in this episode by Emily and Amelia Nagoski, Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle and I recommend it if you are interested in diving into the research in more depth. In further episodes, I will be exploring why we hold onto those beliefs and how we can move ourselves forward towards finding solutions that work better for us individually. The triad of feelings, thoughts and action and their interaction is a key part of coaching and in this episode, I look at why focussing on the thoughts, by harnessing the inner voice, is such an important part of the "growth" process that will ultimately allow us to transform. This type of transformation enables us to change fundamentally how we show up on a daily basis and of course the impact of this is potentially lifechanging, especially for leaders who are stepping into very senior roles, where their technical skills are less important than how they inspire, motivate, challenge, bring people together and more... By focussing on building this foundational layer, we are able to be more flexible, ride out the problems that arise more easily and welcome new opportunities with greater ease. Tune in to hear more and don't forget to join us for part 6, coming soon!If you're enjoying this series, why not share it with someone else who may find it interesting? The Canadian Medical Association wants to see vaccines made mandatory for healthcare workers. We talk to CMA president Dr. Ann Collins about the call.
In this our 3rd episode in our special series on the Inner Voice, we dive into looking at a strategy that has been shown to help us to calm the chatter that can derail us.We know the harmful effects on our mind, body and relationships of chronic stress and whilst a noisy negative inner voice isn't the cause, it's often present. If we can learn to turn it down and therefore reduce it's power, it can help in our management of our moods and stress. In this episode I talk about one strategy that has been studied extensively and that I have used frequently with my coaching clients and that works for many! The great news is that it is a strategy that is simple, easy and quick and that you can use right now! Make sure, however, that you listen to the end, as there is a caveat that you won't want to miss!I reference the work of Ethan Kross, Chatter, 2021 - well worth a read!Watch out for the next Blue Bottle Coaching event:Registration is now open for the next Life, Leadership and Purpose 5 day free workshop at the end of August. It was great to catch up with a fellow expat on this Leaders Who Love What They Do Podcast with Linda Mueller. Linda fully understands the opportunities and the challenges that expat partners encounter while living abroad often because their spouse is in a leadership role and she is passionate about supporting those who are on a similar journey. She is a certified life coach who empowers expat partners to gain a deeper sense of self so that they can design a life they love; one that flows through the ups and downs of their international journey. It was such a pleasure to have Rebecca Le Brocq on the Leaders Who Love What They Do podcast: a very experienced, passionate and inspiring leader in the world of music education and the arts in the UK. In a very wide-ranging conversation, Rebecca touched on a particularly interesting area: why emotional connection, communication and engagement are so important both in leadership and musical performance. We explored her analogy that a musician has to take their audience with them, as a leader brings along their team. Tune in to hear Rebecca talk about her inspiring work, how the power of music really can change lives and what leaders more generally can learn from musicians. About RebeccaAn experienced senior leader in cultural education and charities, Rebecca's expertise lies in strategy, fundraising and project management. She has held senior roles in a range of fast-paced and dynamic national charities of differing scales and has led significant change programmes in the organisations where she has worked. Most recently Rebecca was CEO at Voices Foundation for 7 years (2014 – 2021). During her tenure she led the organisation through a process of strategic development and complex culture change. Outcomes included an increase in the charity's turnover by 2.5 times and fundraised income by 3.5 times. This was mirrored by growth in terms of reach and impact for beneficiaries. A key achievement was securing a significant grant for Voices Foundation to participate in Paul Hamlyn Foundation's prestigious Teacher Development Fund. During Rebecca's tenure, Voices Foundation was awarded three national awards for its pioneering work in music-based teacher development.Prior to this, Rebecca held the role of Education Director at Opera North. She spent ten years leading the company's award-winning Education Department through an expansion which saw a threefold increase in the department's turnover, team, programmes and impact. What a pleasure to talk to Emma Garrett! In this episode she tells me about her huge range of leadership experience across many different sectors: commercial, non-profit and charitable. She explains how inspiring others and connecting with people have been key for her in her leadership journey. However, above all, she talks about another vital ingredient: kindness. Tune in to hear a very inspiring story from someone who describes their success as "accidental". Anything but, I would say! A truly natural leader!About Emma:Emma is the Development Director at Eastbourne College, an Independent co-educational Day and Boarding school on the East Sussex coast. This is a new role that she has recently taken on and she says it is the perfect culmination of everything she has ever done in her career to date, bringing together her experiences in marketing, charity fundraising, public speaking, PR, events planning and networking. She describes her career as ‘squiggly' but wouldn't have had it any other way, and believes that her varied experiences as a mother, entrepreneur, business owner, volunteer, charity fundraiser and Deputy Lieutenant in the county of Bedfordshire have all been invaluable.Emma ran a social media business alongside her park Cafés providing training and social media management for SMEs and charities. The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: Physicians at McMaster Children’s Hospital are calling for the return to in-person learning in Ontario as soon as possible to avoid further negative impacts on kids’ health and well-being. Hospital officials say the number of children being admitted after a suicide attempt has tripled since this time last year, and referrals to the hospital’s eating disorders program have increased by 90 per cent since last spring. Dr. Jeffrey Pernica, head of pediatric infectious disease at the children’s hospital and associate professor at McMaster University, said the impact of kids being out of school goes beyond hospitalizations. “Nobody is talking about the number of kids who are not going to graduate high school, who are not going to get employment, who are going to have issues with eating disorders for the rest of their lives,” said Pernica. “Nobody is thinking about what this generation is going to be like in 20 years. GUEST: Dr. Martha Fulford, Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist at McMaster Children's Hospital and Hamilton Health Sciences - A detailed statistical analysis of nearly 200 countries and their experiences with and responses to COVID-19 found that Canada ranked poorly compared to other industrialized countries on testing and hospital beds, which were determined to be key in responding to COVID-19, finds a new study released by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan, Canadian public policy think-tank. Global Storm: The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Responses around the World is a new study that analyses the COVID-19 responses of nearly 200 countries around the world over the past year. “While no two countries tackled COVID-19 the same way, there are important lessons that Canada should learn going forward,” said Livio Di Matteo, an economics professor at Lakehead University, Fraser Institute senior fellow and study author. The study highlights factors that have been successful at reducing transmission of COVID-19 cases and lowering mortality rates based on a detailed statistical analysis of available data. GUEST: Livio Di Matteo, Senior Fellow with the Fraser Institute - For more than 10 years before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Canadian public health officials knew there were problems with how the country managed its emergency medical stockpile – but failed to act. In a new report issued Wednesday, Auditor General Karen Hogan said that failure to fix the problems ahead of time meant Canada was not as prepared as it could have been for the surge in demand for precious personal protective equipment last year. The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: Groups representing thousands of doctors and nurses are asking the federal Liberals to help Canada's strained health-care system in their upcoming budget, flagging concerns about lack of access to family doctors as well as chronic staff shortages. The Canadian Medical Association estimates about five million Canadians don't have a primary care physician, or family health-care team, which has spillover effects into other parts of the health-care system. Among those trickle-down effects is people going to emergency departments, already stretched by the COVID-19 pandemic, for issues a family doctor could manage. ALSO: Paid sick days vs. federal benefit: Why advocates say both are needed to fight COVID-19 GUEST: Dr. Ann Collins, President of the Canadian Medical Association - A recent poll finds that a majority of Ontarians feel that the provincial government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly faltered. A survey conducted by the Angus Reid Institute, a non-partisan public opinion research organization, concludes that Canadians appear to be increasingly disappointed in their provincial leaders in wake of variants of concern rapidly impacting the severity of a third wave. While at least half of respondents in Manitoba and Saskatchewan said they’re concerned with their premiers response, 65 percent of Ontarians and 75 percent of those polled in Alberta said their leader or their provincial government is poorly handling the pandemic. GUEST: Andrew McDougall, Professor of Political Science with the University of Toronto - The Canadian Chamber of Commerce released the results of a poll examining how Canadians feel about how and where they work during the pandemic. Abacus Data completed the polling for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Slightly more than 1 in 2 Canadians (51 per cent) are still going into the workplace most of the time, with another 12 per cent splitting their time between the workplace and working from home. Only 36 per cent are working from home full time. They asked when they thought their workplace would return to normal, nearly half of Canadians (45 per cent) did not believe that would occur until 2022. For those Canadians going into the workplace, 4 out of 5 feel safe doing so. Conversely, only 1 in 2 of those working from home most or part of the time feel safe about the prospect of returning to their workplaces. The data suggests the majority of Canadians already going into the workplace most of the time are seeing the right safety precautions to keep them feeling safe. Valéry Vuillermoz is a logistics expert with responsibility for the supply chain of pharmaceutical supplies to pharmacies for the eastern region of France. As a senior leader, he and his team worked tirelessly during the lockdown to procure and deliver medical supplies across a region that was particularly impacted by the virus. Already before the lockdown, procuring medication and medical supplies had been a challenge and with little warning, demand exploded. With 20% of staff suddenly absent due to illness or other lockdown-related issues on most days, a management team homeworking, Valéry needed to ensure that 24 warehouses could receive and dispatch supplies at a level never seen before. This required leadership and interpersonal skills at an extraordinary level. In this podcast, Valéry shares how he approached the crisis and what he learnt and how having a purpose at work remains his priority and guide for him and his team. About Valéry:Valéry has had a long career in logistics and has worked for 22 years at CERP, a pharmaceutical distribution company in France. He has always enjoyed leading teams whether in the Head Office in Belfort or in the warehouses in the eastern region of France. He is particularly interested in processes that allow automation and is currently working on a pilot project that will allow robots to assist in the warehouses. However, it is people management that interests him most and working directly with his teams is what inspires him.Continuing his own professional development has always been a priority for him and in 2017 he completed a part-time Master's degree specialising in Supply Chain Management at the Kedge Business school. He enjoys travelling when he can and likes to take advantage of opportunities to dive in warm seas.
