We start off tonight with an episode of “Suspense” that isn't all that suspenseful, i.e. spooky. But it's a lot of fun. “The Lost Special” is based on a non-Sherlock Holmes story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which first appeared in “The Strand Magazine” in August, 1898. Orson Welles narrates. This is an Armed Forces Radio rebroadcast, which means the ads have been taken out. It was played overseas for US troops. Then, our guests on tonight's episode of the quiz show “Information Please” are science popularizer Bernard Jaffe and … Harpo Marx? Yes. The show revels in the sheer novelty of having Harpo, the one Marx Brother who doesn't speak, on a panel, and he still manages be witty and delightful. The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London.---------------------------------------------------------------------------Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theaterhttps://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491----------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's episode five and this time we're looking at The Story of the Man with the Watches and The Story of the Lost Special, two of Conan Doyle's Round the Fire stories written in 1898, and widely considered apocrypha of the Sherlock Holmes canon. Hello and welcome back to the NotACast, the one true chapter-by-chapter podcast going through A Song of Ice and Fire one chapter a week! In this episode, Sansa Stark, reeling from witnessing her father’s execution, is forced to stand strong against Joffrey (who is the worst), Meryn Trant (also the worst), and Sandor Clegane (not entirely the worst??) This week, we: - Talk some Shirley Jackson - Get deep on Sansa's grief - Ponder Sandor Clegane as anti-cynicism - Show how it's not all horror. George ain't a sadist or nihilist - Talk some retcon foreshadowing - Discuss Sansa's end point: Queen in the North! We found a lost episode. Another battle of 80's trivia.
In an extra-large edition for our 50th podcast episode, we welcome Orson Welles back to the show for three of his visits to Suspense. In the fall of 1943, Welles starred in several episodes of “radio’s outstanding theater of thrills” in a special engagement. He appeared in some of the best thrillers from literature by some of the best authors of the genre, and this week we’ll hear three shows from that run: Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Lost Special” (an AFRS rebroadcast of an episode from September 30, 1943); Agatha Christie’s “Philomel Cottage” (originally aired on CBS on October 7, 1943); and “Lazarus Walks” (an AFRS rebroadcast of an episode from October 19, 1943).
This Sunday we were blessed by our great friends Jody & Vanessa Romero from Restoration LA church. Please listen and be encouraged by this amazing message.

A year and a half ago, I featured a radio version of Arthur Conan Doyle's short story, "The Lost Special" which aired over Escape in 1949. At that time, the Suspense version starring Orson Welles was considered lost. Recently, the audio for that 1943 Suspense version has surfaced thanks to Randy Riddle. And so, I am taking another look at this version of the story, which is much closer to the original short story. I have mixed feelings about the adaptation as you will hear. Background music is Grover's Tune by Excellent Adventure

Arthur Conan Doyle (right) is best known for his creation of the detective Sherlock Holmes. This week I look at another detective creation of his - one Inspector Collins of Scotland Yard. He only appeared once on radio and that was in the Escape presentation of a Conan Doyle short story - "The Lost Special" about a train that seems to totally vanish. Collins has Holmesian characteristics in his detective skills. Music under is "Katy's Melting Song" by Monika Herzig on Podshow.com
