Dr. Mark Pickering: Human Euthanasia is Here

Shaping Opinion

Dr. Mark Pickering joins Tim to talk about the disturbing spread of  and interest in human euthanasia throughout western cultures, particularly in Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. Mark is a general practitioner of family medicine. He focuses his work on prisons and other similarly secure facilities. In addition, he is the head of the Christian Medical Fellowship in the United Kingdom. In this conversation, we talk about the myths and the realities of assisted suicide. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Human_Euthanasia_is_Here_auphonic.mp3 In 1997, the state of Oregon passed the Death with Dignity Act, which allowed the medically assisted suicide for people who were terminally ill. Since that time, over 3,280 people received prescriptions for legal doses of medications under the act's provisions. The state reports that of those who received prescriptions, 2,159 people actually took the medications and died from the lethal dosages. Since 1942, the nation of Switzerland has allowed assisted suicide. But according to the government, it only allows this form of euthanasia so long as, “the motives are not selfish.” Closer to home, in Canada in 2016, the Canadian government legalized medical assistance in dying. The acronym for this is MAID. The Canadian Supreme Court had decided that existing laws that prohibited assisted suicide were an afront to individual rights. Here's how the MAID program started. Medical professionals - doctors and nurses - would administer lethal injections or fatal medications to patients who met a specific criteria. The individual had to have a serious illness or disability; the individual had to be in what the government described as an “advanced state” of decline that could not be reversed; the individual had to be experiencing unbearable physical or mental suffering; or the individual had to be at the point where natural death had become “reasonably foreseeable.” Notice that nowhere in Canada's original requirements did the individual have to be terminally ill. But that was just the beginning.  Before long, anyone who wanted help with suicide was able to get it. Canadians who were depressed, stressed, or just economically poor or in a state of mental distress could get help with their own suicide. In 2021, the government relaxed the condition that that natural death must be “reasonably foreseeable.” After that, the stories of Canadians being presented with suicide as a medical option included some who were just temporarily homeless or in some kind of pain that otherwise could be treated. Consider the story of Alan Nichols. When he was a child, he lost his hearing. He had had a stroke. But overall, at 61 years old, he was able to live on his own. Then in 2019 he was admitted to the hospital over concerns that he might be at risk of committing suicide. He was mentally unstable. Not in his right mind. While he was in the hospital, he pleaded with his brother Gary to get him out of the Canadian hospital. Over the course of the next four weeks, he then was reported to have applied for medically assisted suicide under the MAID program. The only medical condition he listed as his reason for wanting to die was being hard of hearing. Instead of treating Nichols' obvious mental instability, the hospital supported his desire to kill himself and provided its own justification. It said Nichols had some vision loss, that he was frail, that he had a history of seizures and in their words, he had a “failure to thrive,” whatever that means. The hospital framed the process as Nichols requesting to die by lethal injection, and it saw that rationale as valid. The procedure was carried out expeditiously. When the Associated Press talked to Nichols' brother Gary, he said that his brother Alan, “was basically put to death.” Inmates on death row are forced to wait much longer. Mark Pickering is on the front lines of this issue.

In this seminar Dan will outline the major themes from his book Making Faith Magnetic which develops the theological anthropology of the 20th Dutch missionary and scholar J.H. Bavinck. Our focus will be the ‘religious consciousness' of all human beings which can be summarised as ‘magnetic points' – perennial themes and questions which all humans beings answer in their lives. These magnetic points are a fruitful way of thinking about evangelism, discipleship and cultural renewal in whatever cultural context God has placed you. Dan is the director of Crosslands Forum, a centre for cultural engagement. Formerly he was college director at Oak Hill College, London. He is a visiting professor at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, contributing editor for Themelios, and vice president of The Southgate Fellowship, and a Fellow of The Keller Center for Cultural Apologetics. His most recent books are Plugged In (The Good Book Company, 2019), and Making Faith Magnetic (The Good Book Company, 2021). Recorded on 04 August 2023 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Mark Pickering chairs a webinar with Dr André Van Mol. Gender dysphoria is a diagnosis, but transgenderism is an ideology. Gender transition procedures (GTPs) imperil already at-risk gender dysphoric youth with experimental and unproven hormonal and surgical gender procedures, which medicalize prematurely and permanently. Transition procedures are not proven effective, not proven safe, do not reduce suicides, and are not the standard of care for gender dysphoria. Comprehensive literature reviews are driving an international pushback against GTPs in favor of intensive psychological evaluation and support for both the patient and their family, and the lawsuits over the harms of GTPs have begun. GTPs are not evidence-based care for gender dysphoric youth. André Van Mol, MD is a board-certified family physician in full-time practice in California. He co-chairs both the American College of Pediatricians' Council on Adolescent Sexuality and the Christian Medical & Dental Associations Sexual & Gender Identity Task Force. Dr. Van Mol writes and speaks for the US CMDA on issues of bioethical and Christian concern. He works with Alliance Defending Freedom in a coalition of professionals advising on policy matters addressing sexual orientation and gender identity. He advises legislators, government agencies, and legal and advocacy organizations internationally on these issues. Dr. Van Mol serves on the boards of Bethel Church of Redding and Moral Revolution.

Assisted dying, assisted suicide, or murder: should doctors who save lives be given the power to end them? hosted by Roger Bolton, with Dr. Ellen Wiebe and Dr. Mark Pickering

Should anyone be eligible for medical assistance in dying?  "Choosing Death: Assisted Dying, Assisted Suicide, Murder – Who Decides?"   Should the power to decide be granted to everyone when it comes to medical assistance in dying? A recent Canadian survey sheds light on the attitudes towards euthanasia and assisted dying, revealing startling statistics. Poverty, homelessness, mental illness, and disability – these factors, according to the Canadian survey, justify access to euthanasia for a significant portion of the population.  Shocking, but perhaps not surprising is that the younger generation, in particular, supports these views, with percentages reaching as high as 41% for reason of poverty, and 60% for being disabled.     Death and dying have always been subjects that people tend to avoid discussing, but they demand our attention. Assisted dying, in particular, is a challenging and highly emotional topic that cannot be ignored. Each culture holds its own beliefs and attitudes towards the inevitable. Often, we are thrust into this discussion by circumstances – a close friend, a family member, or a beloved person falling severely ill, either gradually or suddenly. As Christians, it is crucial for us to engage in conversations about death. When is the right time to die?   Some argue that doctors should have the authority to provide medical assistance in dying. In Canada, laws surrounding assisted dying are expanding to include various situations where individuals have the right to choose death, even without a terminal illness. However, should doctors, who are meant to heal, be asked to take lives? And what does Christianity have to say about this contentious issue? Is it our prerogative to determine the timing of our own death? Join Roger Bolton as he hosts this vital discussion, featuring UK-based Dr. Mark Pickering from the Christian Medical Fellowship and Canadian doctor Ellen Wiebe.  Dr Mark Pickering is the Chief Executive of CMF (UK/Ireland). He is based in London where he also works as a secure environment GP (in prisons and similar institutions). He has a long term interest in bioethics and often speaks on behalf of the Care Not Killing Alliance. He has previously worked as a hospice junior doctor. Recorded on 18 May 2023 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Mark Pickering. In the 1820s and 30s, early mission pioneers realized the immense value of combining the healing of the body with the preaching of the gospel. This led to the launch of the Medical Missionary Society in China, which influenced many others in the UK, USA and far beyond. The modern medical missionary movement was born! Its early history gives us many lessons that are valuable for contemporary challenges, and also helps us reflect on current controversies in mission. This webinar will expand on an article in the CMF UK/Ireland journal, Triple Helix - The birth of modern medical mission. Dr Mark Pickering is the Chief Executive of CMF (UK/Ireland). Recorded on 9 March 2023 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Mark Pickering chairs a webinar with Dr Richard Winter There is obviously nothing wrong with striving for excellence but sometimes that pursuit seduces us into the unhealthy realms of perfectionism. Our culture surrounds us with images of perfect bodies, perfect houses, perfect cars... We will explore the assets and liabilities of perfectionism, delve into what produces the perfectionist drive, and finally look at ways to work against extreme thoughts and find a healthy balance. Ultimately it is the understanding and experience of grace that begins to free us from the chains of unhealthy perfectionism. Dr Winter grew up in England and trained in medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and then in psychiatry in Bristol. (He is a past member of The Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK.) He was also a counsellor, teacher and leader at the English L'Abri and associate pastor of a church in Hampshire for some years before moving to the US in 1992 to head the counselling program at Covenant Seminary where he is now Professor Emeritus. Dr. Winter's research interests have been at the interface of psychology, medicine, and theology. He is the author of The Roots of Sorrow: Reflections on Depression and Hope (2001); Still Bored in a Culture of Entertainment: Rediscovering Passion and Wonder (2002); Perfecting Ourselves to Death: The Pursuit of Excellence and the Perils of Perfectionism (2005); and When Life Goes Dark: Finding Hope in the Midst of Depression (2012).  Welcome to the first episode in the latest series of CMF's ist incision podcast. We've been away for quite a few months, but there is a lot to talk about, and we start with an issue that remains at the top of the news.Every few weeks we see another headline about assisted suicide. Someone with a serious illness has been to Zurich to die at the Dignitas clinic, complaining that they should be able to choose when and how they die in the UK, but the law won't allow it. Polls show that the majority of the British population would like people to have that option. And politicians and celebrities campaign for changes in the law to allow this.  Why should this not happen? Why have changes to the law on helping someone to end their own life when they are already dying or suffering not happened yet in Britain?  In today's first incision I am talking to Gordon McDonald, the CEO of Care Not Killing, a campaign group opposing a change to the law on assisted suicide and euthanasia, and Dr Mark Pickering, CEO of the Christian Medical Fellowship and a prison GP.For more details about Our Duty of Care (ODOC) see ourdutyofcare.org.ukCMF has run a number of blogs on end-of-life issues, as well as other resources on our website. Support the show (https://cmf.li/Give)

Christian MP Tim Farron speaks to Dr. Mark Pickering, the Chief Executive of the Christian Medical Fellowship (CMF) - a group that often speaks out on contentious issues of ethics and law. They discuss assisted dying and where medics can shape policy. How does CMF differ from other groups who campaign on ethical issues and why is an expert voice needed? Tim also answers a listener's question about why there isn't much attention on the persecution of Christians in Nigeria and the Middle East. Want your question answered next week? As the House of Lords prepares to debate a change in the law, Roy Jenkins explores the implications of helping terminally ill people to end their own lives with lethal drugs. This is already legal in a number of states such as Canada and Oregon, and others such as New Zealand and Austria are soon set to join them. Supporters of assisted dying claim the tide of public opinion in England and Wales is now firmly in their favour, even among regular churchgoers and other religious people. Even the British Medical Association has declared neutrality, effectively withdrawing its opposition to assisted dying. For their part, opponents claim the opinion polls are skewed, and over-emotive. For many believers, helping to take a life is deeply problematic. And besides this the public (they argue) have very little idea of what exactly they would be voting for. Roy's guests include Rabbi Jonathan Romain, vice-chair of Dignity in Dying, and one of a small number of senior religious figures in favour of changing the law; Baroness Ilora Finlay of Llandaff, prominent in the field of palliative medicine; Dr Mark Pickering, a GP and Chief Executive of the Christian Medical Fellowship; and humanist celebrant Lorraine Barrett, a former nurse who has served as patron of a hospice.

A new bill to allow assisted dying is being debated in the UK parliament. Should people of faith support those with terminal illness being able to end their own life? As medical technology advances and the values at the heart of our society change, health professionals can often find their own values clashing with the demands of clinical specialties and employers. Whether that is being involved with abortions, new fertility technologies, or end of life care decisions, we may all, regardless of faith or other beliefs and values, find ourselves asking 'should I really be doing this?'Freedom of conscience has long been a cherished value in our culture and our health professions, but it is increasingly coming under attack. We are told we should do whatever the patient needs, whatever our personal ethical and conscience problems may be.Today, I am talking with Melody Redman and Mark Pickering about this increasingly fraught topic, and looking at why conscience matters, how we develop and inform our conscience and how we practically and thoughtfully live and work with our colleagues, patients and leaders in line with our values and without violating our consciences.Resources:CMF File 39 - the doctor's conscienceCMF Blogs on conscience issuesA Guide to Christianity for NHS employersReligion, morality, ethics, and war [for reflections on 'moral injury']GMC - GMC Personal beliefs and medical practiceNMC - Conscientious objection by nurses, midwives and nursing associatesSupport the show (https://cmf.li/Give)

The Royal College of Physicians will survey all its members in February on this most controversial question. It says that it will move from opposition to neutrality on assisted dying unless 60% vote otherwise. The BMJ explores several conflicting views. From Canada, palliative care doctor Sandy Buchman explains why he sees medical aid in dying as a compassionate treatment that fully respects patient autonomy. The Canadian Medical Association is neutral on the issue, and Jeff Blackmer, its vice president for international health, shares how that stance enabled it to represent all its members, including doctors with conscientious objections. But many are unconvinced to say the least. Rob George, a UK palliative care doctor and professor at King's College London, says assisted suicide has no place in medicine. Tony Baldwinson, from the UK campaign group Not Dead Yet, worries for disabled people were society to endorse doctors actively ending lives. And Zoe Fritz, a consultant physician in acute medicine at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, has a proposal that she says would protect the doctor-patient relationship.
