Cheap tuner pegs, digging deeper, and the return of the sausage breakfast sandwiches. Jimmy James (True Loves, Parlor Greens) "You could say that Parlor Greens are greater than the sum of their parts…however, the individual parts are simply stellar on their own. Tim Carman (GA-20) on drums, Jimmy James (True Loves, formerly Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio) on guitar, and Adam Scone (Scone Cash Players, The Sugarman 3) on organ. Scone is perhaps the most tasteful living organist on planet Earth (and beyond) and to watch him play is to truly watch a master at work. He bends the organ to his will like a true mastercraftsman. He's a veteran of the soul revival scene, having played on many Daptone recording sessions since their inception, but also has learned from some of the legends of soul jazz: Melvin Sparks and The Turbanator himself Dr. Lonnie Smith. Jimmy James needs no introduction to many as he's been seen all over the world performing with instrumental groups The True Loves and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio. Perhaps the most dangerous right hand in all of soul music, his signature funky approach can be identified by even the most novice of music fans, a feat most musicians could only dream of. Tim Carman. The backbone. The pocket. Having cut his teeth touring the world with blues group GA-20, Carman's expertise in the world of blues shuffles might make him an unlikely candidate to lay the foundation for the funky Parlor Greens, but this debut LP shows otherwise. Steady, heavy pockets and as funky as they come." https://cartermclean.com Carter was born in San Francisco and shortly thereafter moved to Connecticut. This is where McLean listened to and fell in love with music and especially the drums. At age 10, he started his journey as a musician. Broadway wasn't even on his radar when he started working at Manny's Music in Manhattan just prior to 9/11. The self-taught musician had just wrapped up his studies at University of Colorado, Boulder and was hoping to land a gig with someone like Sting, Peter Gabriel or Paul Simon. But then, while working his shift and playing at the store, he got noticed by a vet of Stevie Wonder's band Dennis Davis and got invited to play with legendary musician Roy Ayers in Harlem. While touring with Melvin Sparks in 2002 McLean was approached to be a sub at The Lion King in NYC. This eventually lead to McLean taking over the chair at the hit show in 2011. From Charlie Hunter to the Lion King on Broadway, McLean has been busy touring and doing studio work as well as having a busy teaching schedule. In addition McLean has shared the stage or recorded with Jamie McLean, Greg Holden, Charlie Hunter, Victor Wooten, Anthony Hamilton, Bernie Worrell (Parlament Funkadelic), Fred Wesley (James Brown), Shelby Johnson (Prince), Melanie Gabriel (Peter Gabriel) Leni Stern, Matt Duke and many others. For more, subscribe to Broadway Drumming 101 here: When you subscribe for only $10 a month, you will receive behind-the-scenes access to the life of a musician who makes a living on Broadway through YouTube videos, bi-weekly podcasts, and articles on what you need to know. George Sluppick, professional drummer, has played with such acts as Albert King, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, JJ Grey and Mofro, Luther Dickinson, Robert Walter, Charlie Hunter, Melvin Sparks and numerous other music luminaries. Sluppick joins the podcast to talk life on the road, including several visits to Clemson when Mofro played a popular music venue called The Joint. He shares details on the tumultuous, volatile nature of life on the road with Chris Robinson and what he learned from that experience. He also recalls as a 19-year-old playing for Albert King and regularly being cussed out on stage by the legendary bluesman. Musicians everywhere have had their worlds rocked by the pandemic over the past year, and Sluppick shares how he's adapted to continue making a living doing what he loves. Sluppick is a widely respected soul/funk drummer known for honoring the song and providing a thick, groovy backbone. Noted music critic Ben Ratliff once wrote: “George Sluppick puts a lot of funk into a medium tempo, and recalls the kings of heavy foot: musicians like John Bonham and Gregg Errico from Sly and the Family Stone, who drove their bass-drum beats into your spine.” George and his Memphis-based organ trio, The City Champs, recently released their third album: "Luna 68."

I've interviewed a number if guitarists on my program. Cats like Kenny Burrell who were making up the rules with Donald Byrd and Elvin Jones in Detroit. Locked in a pocket of communal musical connection the same way my guest can hit flurries of notes that have you flying and showing you the way. Regional Music in the Americas was rampant in Appalchia, Chicago Blues, Gulf Coast, and the North Bay SoCa Latin funk escapade. It was also rampant in New Orleans where my guest hails from. He came of age with his musical brothers Art, George and Zigaboo playing music that felt good be it swamp funk or ballads it was emotive. With the feel of the Caribbean and Gulf Coast Rhythms. There were pockets of players from Chuck Rainey and Bernard Purdie Richard Tee in New York To Joe Sample and Wilton Felder who came from the wards in Houston. Pockets of soul intermeshing with Gospel and Wild Magnolias in A Cabbage Alley of pimps, dancers, lights, jazz, blues you can use for enlightenment. My guest today is in the same master guitar class as Kenny Burrell Grant Green, Pat Martino and Melvin Sparks. If he had chose to go to New York he would have wound up being a jazzer with a recognizable name like the those above but the love was odd metered and melodic be it in the right place at the wrong time @ Sea-Saint records. My guest has a funk style like David T. Walker and Phil Upchurch but he is part of a family whose sum is always greater than its parts. He got the memo about being a decent human being and not standing in the middle of the road with some Wild Tchoupitoulis. Episode 024 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* welcomes Hammond B3 organ maestro WIL BLADES to the show for a lengthy conversation about his career, Bay Area music culture, saddling up to jazz and funk legends, the Adam Deitch Quartet, Amendola vs. Blades, and beyond. From bright eyed young cat in Chicago, to one of the rising stars in jazz and groove music, he's among the more impressive organ players in the culture today. Just a few days before he was moving to SoCal, Wil invited me over to his home in Berkeley, CA to have a spirited discussion, and was game to go deep about his own journey, the nuances of Hammond B3 organ, his passion for rare groove, the oral tradition of music, the history of the Boom Boom Room, and so much more. It was an honor to give Wil a chance to really let the people know who he is and how he got to be such a respected and celebrated musician, and to shed a lot of light on historical cats along the way. 7:00 - Wil Blades INTRO 12:45 - Amendola vs. Blades "Hi Lo" 15:00 - WIL'S INTERVIEW STARTS 1:33:30 "Art Bar" - Adam Deitch Quartet We start the conversation in Wil's youth growing up near Chicago in Evanston, IN, learning both the drums and guitar as a youngster, taking ques from his older brothers. We also spend some time talking about how we discovered music as kids in the 90's, and how that is so markedly different from how Wil's teen children find their favorite artists today. From there, he takes us back to the late 90's, moving across the country to the Bay Area to join an Oakland jamband and attend college. Wil explains how SF and Oakland were very different back in those days, and how a particular college professor with a heavy resume and unique teaching style put him on to the importance of the oral tradition in music. At the time of the interview, Wil was preparing to move to Los Angeles after twenty years in the Bay. Wil gives us a colorful reflection on the music scene when he first arrived in the Bay Area, and for much of the convo he continues to tell the tale about how the music and culture would evolve over the next two decades. Wil was/remains also a huge part of the scene at renowned SF venue Boom Boom Room, a hotbed for blues when he arrived, but later evolving into the epicenter for all things NOLA and funky here in NorCal. Wil breaks down what it was like as John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom Room, and how talent buyer Alex/Xander Andreas's vision has helped the club to continue to flourish with the funk. Wil Blades has studied with some of true legends, and talks in great detail about his time with master organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, the late iconic funk/jazz drummer Idris Muhammed, an beloved late hollow-body guitarist Melvin Sparks. Wil has spent time with and performed alongside each of these giants, and it was riveting to hear how he organically and serendipitously came to connect with such luminaries, and what a thrill it was to hear of ho w each of them put him on game. Wil makes sure to explore the essential particulars of organ/drums relationship. Two thirds of the way through the interview, we finally arrive at the Adam Deitch Quartet, Wil's fantastic project with the Lettuce/Break Science drummer wunderkind. We play a portion of the Blades-penned "Art Bar", then return to our dialogue. Wil retraces the steps on how that relationship came together, and gets into the magic that makes it all happen with Deitch, Eric Benny Bloom (trumpet) and Ryan Zoidis (sax). We discuss the making of their critically-acclaimed LP Egyptian Secrets, and reminisce on some classic AD4 gigs thru the years. Wil spends some time discussing his tremendous Amendola vs. Blades project with Bay Area groove merchant Scott Amendola, and their new LP Everybody Wins (Royal Potato Family), and their short West Coast tour. Wil Blades finishes out this phenomenal interview by talking about what's he excited about in moving down to LA after two decades as a prodigal son of the Bay. Rusty Bryant was an authoritative voice of the tenor and alto saxophones. Because of his love for Columbus, Ohio he never ventured very far from that city, where he was a local musical hero. He usually went to New York or L.A. only to record. He had some recorded successes in the mid-50's where he displayed a smooth style and a light Getz-like tone but stayed around Columbus and was rediscovered by Prestige Records and offered a contract. By this time he had changed his style to a more bluesy full-bodied sound and concept and worked in a more funky context usually with a Hammond organ. In his series of discs for Prestige we present his best and his best-selling album called "Soul Liberation"Rusty surrounds himself with some great players like Virgil Jones on trumpet, Melvin Sparks on guitar, Charles (The Mighty Burner) Earland on organ and the great Idris Muhammad on drums. Rusty sticks to the tenor on 4 of the 5 tunes one of which is written by Eddie Harris called "Cold Duck Time" two tunes by organist Earland and one straight blues by Rusty and finally Rusty's tribute, played on the alto saxophone to a cousin who was killed in Viet Nam called "The Ballad of Oren Bliss". "Soul Liberation" is earthy, funky and great for listening and if the spirit moves you....dancing.
