In an insightful discussion on the "Tales from the Green Room" podcast, Reed Mathis provides host Dennis Strazulo and listeners with a detailed preview of his upcoming podcast series “The Gifts of Improvising” which debuts January 29, 2024 on the Osiris Media Podcast Network. Reed opens the door to a new, profound exploration of the role and challenge of artists as they navigate improvising the music of their heroes and legends, analyzed in detail during discussions with fellow musicians throughout 12 introspective episodes. Reed delves into the dynamics of the jam band scene and the authenticity of spontaneous musical creation. Previously connected with iconic projects like Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey and Tea Leaf Green, and with artists including Steve Kimock, Billy Strings, and Bill Kreutzmann, Reed shares the conception and evolution of his podcast with refreshing candor and excitement - describing it not merely as an exploration of improvisation but as a spotlight on the reenactment versus innovation debate within music. Listen as Reed challenges the norm of merely quoting musical heroes and urges a portrayal of personal truth through music. The essence of his message is about fostering a space where musicians are encouraged to "play themselves," offering a raw reflection of their true, creative essence rather than adhering strictly to established templates. The soon to be released series features an impressive roster of musicians, each bringing their unique experiences and insights to light, including: Joe Russo, Marco Benevento, Steve Kimmock, Adam McDougald, and Jay Lane taking a deep dive into musical philosophies and personal anecdotes that reveal much about these beloved names in music.“The Gifts of Improvising” also includes a touching homage to Phil Lesh, featuring reflections from Natalie Cressman, Elliot Peck, and Grahame Lesh - a moving tribute to Lesh's indelible impact on both Mathis's own career and the broader music landscape. Enjoy this discussion as Reed muses about the art and joy of truly improvising in anticipation of his podcast release.Linkshttps://www.instagram.com/reedmathis/https://www.facebook.com/reed.mathis.5/http://www.youtube.com/@reedmathis4623https://www.osirispod.com/podcasts/ MusicLazyLightning55a YouTube Channel: Reed Mathis' Electric Beethoven - 10/26/16 - MP WilliamsburgPhoto by Stefanie Atkinson Schwartz

Hi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. I am ecstatic to introduce today's episode, as it features both a knowledgeable guest who is well known within certain circles of the Phish community, and a thorough, wide-ranging discussion about three of the greatest improvisational rock concerts ever played: Phil and Friends at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco on April 15, 16, and 17, 1999.While not a Phish show, or even a Grateful Dead show, this run of concerts was a milestone for both bands. Not only was it the first time that members of the two major jambands shared a stage, it's notable that songs from both Phish and the Grateful Dead were played over the three nights. I've been listening to these shows since soon after they were played and they haven't aged a day. When Charlie Dirksen of Phish.net and The Mockingbird Foundation volunteered to discuss them and tell about what it was like to actually be there, I couldn't wait to hear about it. These shows have lived in my head for over 20 years, so to hear a first-person account of what they were like made for one of my favorite conversations I've ever had for this podcast. This episode easily could have been three hours long–every time a song was mentioned, it took a lot of willpower on my end not to insert yet another music clip. But there was so much to discuss before we even get to the music. Let's join Charlie to chat about his responsibilities at Phish.net, Steve Kimock's guitar wizardy, and where John Molo fits into everything, as we break down Phil and Friends from April 15, 16, and 17 at the Warfield Theater, in San Francisco, CA.

Instead, through the years, he's explored various sounds and styles based on what's moved him at the time, whether it's blues or jazz; funk or folk; psychedelic or boogie; gypsy or prog-rock; traditional American or world fusion. Threaded through this expansive and highly nuanced musical landscape is Kimock's signature sound, the prodigious product of his ability to articulate crystal-clear tone, melody and emotion into intricately woven music crafted with technical brilliance. His passion and devotion to performing live is matchless, and his unparalleled ability to embrace and capture his audiences musically is the stuff of legend.Kimock co-founded the jazz/rock band Zero in the ‘80s and KVHW in the ‘90s; since then, he has recorded and toured in various outfits under his own name. His collaborations with assorted band mates and groups have provided an everlasting wellspring of inspiration for the guitarist, and he has shared the stage with a seemingly endless array of international musical luminaries. After more than 40 years on stage, Kimock is more committed than ever to a jubilant spirit of musical diversity — the same spirit that has fed his desire to pursue an authentic relationship with the guitar since the day he realized his calling.A musician's musician, Kimock has also shared the stage with countless other musical luminaires such as Taj Mahal, David Lindley, Jorma Kaukonen, Hot Tuna, Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers, Merl Saunders, Buddy Miles, Derek Trucks, Elvin Bishop, Grace Potter, Grace Slick, Little Feat, Nicky Hopkins, Norton Buffalo, Papa John Creach, Peter Frampton, all members of Phish, Screamin' Jay Hawkins and more.Go see Steve on the road and support his music. Stories! Man does my old pal, Kenny Aaronson, have them, and, he was in them when their monster hit, Brother Louie, was #1. I love rock 'n roll, and savored every word of Kenny's incredible career from Dust with Marky Ramone, to his current gig with The Yardbirds, a 50-year dream come true. There's so damn much betwixt and between and stories for all of it. How he got each gig, highlights, and how they came to a close. Playing with Hall & Oats before they hit huge, opening with them for Lou Reed, suing Tommy Motolla to get paid, that takes balls, but nearly as much as when Mick called and asked Kenny to audition for The Stones. Kenny's interactions with Keith are… well, one for the book, and I heard it made Keith's. Google was wrong about Hendrix but not about Ginger Baker, hanging with Cream, Beck, Rod Steward in '68, amazing reminiscences. Playing with Leslie West, Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Graham Parker, great until it was time to get paid, recording with George Harrison, Rick Derringer, opening monster concerts for Aerosmith, Foreigner, Boston, Frampton during Frampton Comes Alive. There was HSAS with Sammy Hagger, before Van Halen, Bob Dylan, for Christ's sake, John Eddy with our pal, Louie Appel, to present day with The Yardbirds, his favorite band when he was a kid, full circle to being a years-long member. Steve Kimock has his attention and talents as well now. Back to less structured jamming days, like back where Kenny started. He's diggin' doing what he loves and at this stage leaving the rest. There's a damn good reason Kenny was named Bassist of The Year in '88 by Rolling Stone. I've seen him slap that bass in many incarnations through the years––no one's more fun to watch, or funks it out, better. I love this man. It's all about his bass, and his balls. So damn fun. Show Tunes by Steve Kimock When I arrived in California, there were people around who made comparisons between my playing and Jerry's playing. I just wasn't that familiar with his playing. I was doing my best to sound somewhere in between Roy Buchanan and Steve Howe. I didn't relate to “the Garcia thing” as an influence until much later, when I realized how much influence in certain areas we shared. That's when I said, “I get it: that's what you're hearing.” I had friends who were into the Grateful Dead back in the day, and they would tell me about it and I didn't really care. I had no idea and was completely clueless. I came to the game late, which didn't help. For me all of that stuff falls under the category of small-group improvisation. I'm OK if I'm listening to Miles Davis or The Meters or The Grateful Dead: anybody who's setting up and playing in real time, playing together as a unit. The musicians are going to be working off each other. If you're working off the musicians and you're playing for an audience and you're working off the audience, that's what's setting the table for the energy that happens. Everything else is detail. A lot of my favorite Garcia songwriting is very much Tin Pan Alley or Broadway show tunes. The introduction to “Mission in the Rain”: it doesn't get much more Broadway than that. That's a classic Broadway intro.

One of the 4Ls of the JFS is Lineage. The idea of a family tree, where unique sounds originated from and where the sound spectrum lives in today's electronica world. Sam Cooke and Ray Charles slow cooked soul music was real rhythm and blues along with Chuck Berry who could play in 7/4 it didn't bother him. My guest today is someone who continues the legacy left by Jerry Garcia, Lowell George, Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix. In unique sound yes, a sound he procured from hours of practice and understanding the rudiments. Once you do that you can play music where you can leave your physical body and feel that love. We're big fans of Leslie Mendelson. She is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter who is quite talented and varied in her presence in various scenes both in and out of the jam band community. She's played with Bob Weir at TRI Studios, worked on a project or two with Steve Kimock, and has opened for The Who in NYC at MSG. Her debut release was nominated for a Grammy, and her follow up Love and Murder remains one of our favorite albums since we started this podcast. Now she is set to release "If You Can't Say Anything Nice" which delves a little deeper into the human condition, more specifically hers, and offers up a fairly eclectic view of her as an artist. So, of course, we had to get Leslie on, to talk about the new record, cause we dig it quite a bit.  First Song: 00:14 - Medication Interview Begins: 03:39 Extro Song: 39:07 - Hardest Part See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A master of improv for over 4 decades, Steve was hanging out with the Grateful Dead, Jorma Kaukonen and other Bay area players back in the day. Since then, he’s released 9 solo LPs and was once touted by Jerry Garcia as his “favorite unknown guitar player.” Steve opens up about moving back and forth from PA to Northern California, playing with Jerry Garcia, Jorma Kaukonen & The Allman Brothers... personal challenges including the loss of his father, a devastating injury to his strumming hand, learning to be a better father, Ali Akbar College of Music..., and how he went from being a happy guy who’s grumpy all the time, to a happy guy. Rob and Seth talk about the current incarnation of Mike Gordon, and its superb Spring Tour 2019-opening show before tossing to an in depth interview. Scott Murawski, Robert Walter and John Kimock join the hosts at Atlanta's Diamond Street Studios and they quickly find themselves discussing the producing brilliance of Shawn Everett, and how it was vital to the unique feel of Ogogo. Live performance is discussed at length, and Scott talks about how Mike encourages the band to, "push the envelope as far as sound goes and as far as improvisation goes" and Robert relates about how exploring synthesizers and the textures they create with Mike Gordon has directly influenced his 20th Congress work and vice-versa. Scott talks about how he sometimes likes to, "play things in a way that encourages people to think 'I could do that'" after which Walter leads into a conversation about improvisational exercises and the importance of "rudeness" with regard to creating compelling music in the moment. John Kimock explains some of his thinking behind his own approach to improvisation, and to his solo work some of which is with his father, legendary guitarist Steve Kimock. Also discussed are mid-tour musical adjustments, the interactive elements of Mike Gordon (the band) tours and how much fun they are having with the plethora of unrecorded songs specific to Mike Gordon (the band). Scott responds to Rob's suggestion that Max Creek bassist John Rider was a huge influence on Mike Gordon (the person), brings forth his early memories of Mike and band mate Trey Anastasio watching Max Creek from the front row, offers his opinion on an old Phish myth, talks about how horn players influenced him, his recent writing with Mike and spin on the Joni Mitchell "Kill Mommy Syndrome." A discussion about Robert's first pedal leads first to The Police and Bob Marley and in turn about how the "embrace of the economy of parts" was a significant influence on Robert as a musician. Each of these fantastic musicians updates the listener on their own solo projects, and then Seth and Rob offer their own closing thoughts. Late in the episode there are also COMPLETE live versions of Mike Gordon and Robert Walter's 20th Congress songs. After an exploration of the band's new songwriting process and its near future, we go back to the PGroove roots in Savannah 20 years ago. We learn about how the initial line-up came about at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and how that lineup would morph into the classic Perpetual Groove line-up. We learn how they didn't even play a note before what would have been their first gig was shut down. We find out that half of the band was active military in the group's early days. Brock's view of the evolution the band's career is also explored. We get a window into the process behind the writing of Perpetual Groove favorites including, "Three Weeks," perhaps their most well-known original. We learn specific ways in which David Gilmour and Steve Kimock were influences. We find out that he was still "using" while working on the band's "Heal" cd. Toward the end of the interview, the trio talks a good bit about addiction, how low Brock got and how he found his way out. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. Bass player extraordinaire, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and band leader Reed Mathis is a true artist, whom unapologetically has much to say both with his instrument and without. Reed spent 15 years exploring the outer realms of improvisation and composition with progressive jazz/rock/groove band Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey which he co-founded in 1994 with pianist Brian Haas. Reed went on to join the San Francisco jam/rock band Tea Leaf Green with whom he also composed and produced records for, over a 6+ year tenure. He's also toured and recorded with many artists as a sideman including Bill Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead), Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead), Steve Kimock, Marco Benevento, Robert Walter, Page McConnell (Phish) and many many others. He now leads his own group, Electric Beethoven which takes Beethoven's symphonies, expands the forms, adds improvisation and presents them in a rock and roll electric dance context. Reed is a wealth of musical and historical knowledge. In this episode we discuss many different topics including how he approaches improvisation with his band, how Beethoven's music can be traced to New Orleans music and the Roots of Rock n' Roll, why he has at times struggled fitting into the Grateful Dead music playing scene, and much more. Guitar Player Magazine - Guitar Hero Competition

Edward DeGenaro is a fusion guitarist whose “Nude Guitars” sound—a unique mix of bebop and metal stylings mixed with a whole lot of the DeGenaro personality—has been compared to the works of Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale, and Steve Vai. DeGenaro's journey in music began in Germany, where he was born and raised. He studied cello at an early age, but quickly picked up the guitar as his instrument of choice for venting his artistic expression. After receiving a degree in Performance and Teaching from the German National Conservatory of Music in Nuremberg, he worked as a session player throughout Europe before relocating to Los Angeles, and, finally to Seattle, where he currently resides.DeGenaro performs at various venues, such as the NYC Fretless Guitar Festival and the NAMM show, and has worked (as a musician and/or recording engineer) with Elliott Sharp, Steve Kimock, Henry Kaiser, David Byron Band, Accept, Hammerhead, Alcatraz, David Rosenthal, and Roy Thomas Baker. He has also contributed to various feature films and television commercials, and recently finished recording all the audio samples for Jack Zucker's Sheets Of Sound, Vol. II. He is also working on his soon-to-be-released CD, Dog House.
