Today I sit down with Todd Mayo owner of one of the coolest concert venues in the world. Years ago a friend sent me a YouTube clip of The Chris Robinson Brotherhood playing at one of the most insane venues I had ever seen. It looked like the band was playing on Mars. I had never seen this venue so I dug in and did some research and found out it was called The Caverns, located in Grundy County Tennessee. This venue was created by my guest Todd Mayo and it quickly became a destination venue. Everyone has played there including Chris Stapleton, Lucinda Williams, Billy Strings and more. There are a handful of absolute magical venues in the world, Red Rocks, The Gorge, Hollywood Bowl, The Sphere and now The Caverns. Todd Sits down with me for an In-Depth conversation on exactly how this place came to be. Not only has Todd created one of the coolest venues in the world he also created an Emmy Award winning TV show on PBS called The Cavern Sessions. Todd has a book coming out in Sept called Caveman Chronicles that I can honestly say is a must read. Also a very special Announcement is at the front of this episode so do not skip the intro. To learn more about the Neal Casal Music Foundation visit:https://nealcasalmusicfoundation.org/To Purchase Highway Butterfly, The Songs of Neal Casal:https://nealcasalmusicfoundation.org/store/highway-butterflyAbout Neal Casal:Neal Casal was born in Denville, New Jersey in 1968. He was a songwriter, singer, guitarist, record producer, photographer, surfer and friend. When his parents divorced in the mid-70's, Neal moved with his mom from NJ to Georgia to California, before coming back to NJ and growing up in Rockaway, NJ. After graduating high school in 1987 and the end of his high school rock band, Exire, Neal started working at a guitar store called The Music Maker in Hackettstown, NJ. It was there he met a musician named Davis Jaynes, who would become Neal's mentor and a huge influence on his guitar style. They would play guitar together at the store all day and spent a year or so playing shows together around New Jersey, where Neal would develop the sound that would become the foundation of his solo career. Neal would go on to appear on multiple recordings as a member of bands like Circles Around the Sun, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Beachwood Sparks, The Skiffle Players and Hard Working Americans. He added his sublime musical touch to studio sessions and live performances by a long list of artists, including Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams, The Jayhawks, James Iha and Vetiver. His vast body of solo work was embraced by audiences worldwide and continues to be rediscovered in his passing. With the formation of the Neal Casal Music Foundation, the body of work Casal left behind, including an extensive archive of unreleased material, will be reimagined to further shine a light on his artistry, while providing resources to raise money for positive change. Neal Casal brought joy to so many and, in his absence, the foundation created in his name will further that purpose. It also hopes to reflect back to Casal the beauty he brought to this world in pursuit of a life dedicated to music and art.Neal Graeme CasalNovember 2, 1968 – August 26, 2019

On Episode 114 of New Slang, I'm joined by country singer-songwriter Zephaniah OHora. The country crooning OHora is releasing Listening To The Music, his stellar follow-up to 2017 standout This Highway, this coming Friday, August 28. With the late great Neal Casal (The Cardinals, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Hard Working Americans) at the producing helm, OHora, Casal, and company create a distinct, elegant, and lush sonic palette. Taking cues from some of the greats of the '60s and '70s, OHora blends the gentle, light airiness of Countrypolitan with the hard rolling rhythms of trucker country. Ever the crooner, OHora's gleaming vocals are as beaming with power as they are delicate and nurturing. Throughout Listening To The Music, OHora pairs that iconic voice with nuanced and thoughtful lyrics about everyday life, tragic heartbreak, and late nights. Songs like lead single "All American Singer" is a modern-day common man anthem while the likes of "It's Not So Easy Today" and "We Planned To Have It All" are dejected tearjerker ballads. The rollicking "Living Too Long" fills in as a highway humming pedal stomper.During this interview, we talk about releasing an album as an independent artist in 2020, recording the album with Neal Casal (and other Casal stories), the background on this crop of songs, OHora's songwriting process, music (and life) philosophies, becoming a father, the unknown effects of Social Media, and several other topics. “Bring My Flowers Now” Tanya Tucker. Compuesta por Brandi Carlile, Phil Hanseroth, Tim Hanseroth y Tanya Tucker. “Crowded Table” The Highwomen. Compuesta por Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby y Lori McKenna. “My Love Will Not Change” Aubrie Sellers featuring Steve Earle. Compuesta por Billy Burnette y Shawn Camp. “Stay High” Brittany Howard. Compuesta por Brittany Howard. “Thoughts and Prayers” Drive-By Truckers. The Dirt And The Stars. That’s How Rumors Get Started. Five things for today. Have a good one, everybody! Chris Robinson on Eric Krasno Plus One. New episode today—Chris tells Eric about growing up in Atlanta, forming The Black Crowes with his brother when they were teenagers, and how he ended up in the role of frontman. The two dig deep into their love of music, the artists who first influenced Chris, from Sam & Dave to REM, and how he finally got into The Grateful Dead. They talk about what he's listening to now, and reflect on their mutual friend and guitarist for Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Neal Casal.36 From the Vault Covers 5/2/70. Just a couple of days off of the 50th anniversary, Steve and Rob are back This show is pretty fascinating, we get to see them working on songs from Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, in their acoustic set, like “Friend Of The Devil,” “Dire Wolf,” and “Black Peter.” And then the electric set gets weird. Lots of good jams, great time for the band. Jeff Kravitz 420 Live! If you all haven't seen Jeff Kravitz's daily show at 4:20 where he interviews people, you should check it out. He's had everyone from George Porter Jr to Peter Shapiro to Stewart Copeland to Chris Kuroda and many more on his show. And we have an Osiris collaboration with Jeff to tell you about later this week! 8:30pm—Umphrey's Live 8/23/15. Each Monday night you can tune in to watch a handpicked archive from Umphrey's McGee. You can also make a donation to Conscious Alliance or to tip the band! Metzger, Paczkowski, Lawton—One More Time. Wanted to give one more plug to the interview that I did with Scott, Ray and Russ about their new LaMP project, along with a track from their new album. That was a lot of fun, and we hope you enjoy it! Video version here, audio version here. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

He grew up in Westhampton, Long Island but after high school decided to head west to see what opportunities existed for him. We’ve already established that are so many roads to Dead fandom. But with decades’ worth of music and lore to sift through, cultivating a deeper appreciation can be a challenge. This episode looks at the tools we use to dig the Dead, and how context is key to finding your seat on the bus. Ed and Casey examine the band’s online presence from the days of dial-up to our current era of 24/7 access, along with the digital platforms that make it easier to get your Dead on. Here’s a heavy trip: at some point in the not-too-distant future, the people who made this music—and everyone who saw the original band live—will be dust and bones. Is access a valid surrogate for experience? Will Dead culture perpetuate when the legacy is archive-only? Later, Casey gets down with Neal Casal, guitarist for the Chris Robinson Brotherhood and Circles Around the Sun. A thoughtful and engaging player and thinker, Neal has also collaborated with Cass McCombs’ Skiffle Players, Beachwood Sparks, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir. He shares tips on where to dive in and offers a heartfelt account of his own Dead devotion. The Skiffle Players are some what of a hodge podge of terrific California players including singer-songwriter, Cass McCombs, Neal Casal of Chris Robinson Brotherhood and Circles Aaround the Sun, Dan Horne also of Circles Around the Sun and Grateful Shred, Aaron Sperske of Beachwood Sparks along with the incomparable and outstanding Farmer Dave of Beachwood Sparks. Together they play a sort of Skiffle music that blends jazz, blues, folk and American folk all together. Its an extraordinary sound, and SKIFF their second full length album is a tremendous delight. Fortunately, we were able to catch up with Farmer Dave, the skiffle music historian of the group, and the glue that holds the enterprise together. We dig these guys a lot, and SKIFF is a hoot. He also takes us through other Robinson brother activity, such as the Chris Robinson Brotherhood and the Magpie Salute. Then there’s the Gibson ES-335... Our discussion includes Radiohead touring in a tent, Powderfinger abandoning a song, Van Halen responding to David Lee Roth’s choice of album title, why they change track ordering on vinyl and why Lemmy from Motorhead is remembered as a top bloke. We also recommend checking out Adelaide band the Wanderers, Blackberry Smoke and Leon Bridges. We briefly mention the Allman Brothers Band, the Rolling Stones, Metallica and heaps more. CHRIS ROBINSON BROTHERHOOD was formed by the iconic frontman of rock and roll powerhouse band The Black Crowes in 2011 and is now in the midst of one of their most prolific periods to date. Overspilling with stunning musicianship and infectious energy, the band intertwines country, blues and psychedelia, even channeling freewheeling 60s' folk. Their stellar new album, Barefoot In The Head, marks the CRBs third studio release in just two years, and it finds them pushing boundaries and breaking new ground with more joy and wonder than ever before. The album showcases the continued growth of Robinsons songwriting partnership with his bandmates (guitarist Neal Casal, drummer Tony Leone, keyboardist Adam MacDougall, and bassist Jeff Hill) and revels in the kind of adventurousness that can only come from five artists tuned into the same sonic wavelength. ACOUSTIC EIDOLON is what happens when you cross a guitar with 2 necks and a cello with attitude. This duo featuring Joe Scott on double neck guitjo and Hannah Alkire on cello are from Colorado and have graced stages throughout the US, Europe, Australia and Canada. With eleven CDs and a DVD to their credit, these masterful artists continue to captivate audiences throughout the world with their signature “new acoustic sound and boundless possibilities in blending Celtic, Folk, World & Latin music influences. They have released 2 new CDs since their last WoodSongs appearance including the latest, 'A Tree Finds Its Voice,' which features the new cello and guitar made from the same piece of wood. WoodSongs Kid: Jakarah Ritter is sixteen-year-old powerhouse vocalist from Lexington, Kentucky.
