Dennis, also known as Mike D or Mike Dee of Reelblack, shared insights into his journey as a filmmaker, educator, and curator in Philadelphia. With a deep passion for black film and empowering the black community, Dennis has dedicated his career to educating, entertaining, enlightening, and empowering through film. Dennis, the founder of Reelblack Inc., has been actively involved in the film industry for over two decades. His work includes hosting monthly film screenings of black films, contributing to the launch of Ava Duvernay's ARRAY, and curating a diverse range of content on his YouTube channel. Over the years, Dennis has interviewed various independent and Hollywood personalities, most notably the late Dick Gregory. He has also worked with industry giants such as Bill Cosby, Oprah Winfrey, and Spike Lee. One of Dennis' notable achievements includes serving as the executive producer on the restoration of Sam Firstenberg's 1989 action film, "Riverbend," which starred Steve James and Margaret Avery. The film had its world premiere at the Denton Black Film Festival, showcasing Dennis' commitment to preserving black cinema and telling authentic stories. During the podcast interview with host Floyd Marshall, Dennis shared his early beginnings in the film industry, highlighting his education at New York University and the American Film Institute. His journey led him to work on projects like "Beloved" and collaborate with renowned filmmakers like M. Night Shyamalan. Inspired by the potential of Philadelphia's burgeoning film scene, Dennis believed in the city's ability to carve out its unique identity in the industry. Driven by a desire to showcase independent black cinema, Dennis started a monthly screening series in Philadelphia, introducing audiences to the works of emerging black filmmakers. Through Reelblack, he aimed to create a platform for underrepresented voices and provide opportunities for filmmakers of color to share their stories. Throughout the conversation, Dennis emphasized the importance of representation and empowerment in film. He highlighted the need for diverse voices in storytelling and the impact of digital technology in democratizing the filmmaking process. By championing black film restoration and empowerment, Dennis continues to be a leading figure in the industry, inspiring others to pursue their creative endeavors. Geopolitics are a potential menace to public debt markets that could present opportunities for private lenders, according to Mike Dennis, co-head of European credit at Ares Management. “The capital markets in general are still pretty fragile,” Dennis tells Bloomberg News' Lisa Lee and James Crombie in the latest Credit Edge podcast. “It wouldn't take much for that liquidity to reverse out of the system,” he said. Volatility may open the door for private credit firms to participate more in larger corporate loan deals, Dennis says, adding that there's more demand for European transactions than supply. Also in this episode, Bloomberg Intelligence's Stephane Kovatchev analyzes the shipping sector after a 300% increase in freight rates. Greater supply of ships coupled with fading demand are expected to relieve some of the price pressure, Kovatchev says.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

So this conversation was actually recorded in February of 2020 right before everything went haywire with Covid. Mike was then drafted by two teams to play pro ball and chose the warmer climate. After hanging up his cleats he became a dentist, but he and his wife, Jane, retired to Oxford where they can be around their kids and grandkids. He shares his recruiting experience after being pursued by numerous blue blood programs, getting to meet the King of Rock and Roll, and the joys of living in Oxford and becoming a huge Oxford Charger fan as he cheers on his grandchildren. We're continuing with our interview with Tre Stead on this week's edition of Sheer Isolation. She talks about the issues facing sound & light technicians, stage managers and touring musicians as support payments from the Government dry up despite people in the industry still being banned from doing the jobs they love. Our brace of tunes are provided by Swindon's Sean Amor - a fan of Americana who's featured in bands like Bateleurs and Southern Harmony, and has now produced this solo piece in lockdown. And we play a fun tune from classically trained violinist, Mike Dennis - a Bristolian who pulls influence from dub reggae and rap artists. Sorry for the lo-fi audio quality of our links this week - we're blaming a dodgy Zoom connection! The Sheer Isolation podcast is created weekly to promote the music scene in the West of England. It's created by Kieran Moore in Trowbridge and Jon Ponting near Cricklade. Thank you for your continued positive feedback on this series. In the 90s I began seeing Travis Crawford's byline pop up in assorted magazines, and over the years he has written for publications including Film Comment, Filmmaker, Fangoria and increasingly in the liner notes of archival DVDs. Currently he writes regularly for the U.K. Publication, the Calvert Journal. Crawford's always intelligent and passionate writing, often about films that mix genre conventions with exploratory filmmaking, has made his a byline worth seeking out. Personally, his biggest impact was made in his years as a film programmer at the Philadelphia Film Festival, whose highlight was always the sidebar “Danger After Dark,” a series of films curated by Crawford that brought some of wildest and most thrilling films to the festival and promoted the work of major directors who had been otherwise under-represented. Film is a major passion of mine but we haven't had a guest to discuss film with on the show since we had Reelblack Cinema's guru Mike Dennis on twenty episodes ago. Travis and I have chatted across Facebook a lot but I'd only met him fleetingly before the Fun 2 Know mobile studio trekked down to quaint Wilmington, Delaware, still basking in its Revolutionary-era charm. I usually try to pry out the guest's origin story but listening to Bill Ackerman's excellent Supporting Characters podcast, it seemed that Bill had already completed that job. Instead, we engage in a more freewheeling, loose conversation, one hardly influenced at all by the slowly emptying bottle of Lillet Blanc that mysteriously evaporated over the two-plus hours of talk. We discuss our theater going experiences across Delaware, Philadelphia and San Francisco, the work of Dario Argento and Brian De Palma, the current state of the great directors of the 70s, Lindsey Lohan, film distribution today, the limitation of the TV medium, Asian cinema, clawing out a living, bad jobs, film snobbery, Michael Shannon, the new Twin Peaks and much more, So let's head over now, you can imagine the late afternoon sun slowly dropping in the sky while we sit in the dining room of a bed and breakfast with every detail in the room rich in Colonial detail, as we mull over nearly a hundred years between us of film-viewing thoughts and memories.
Dr Mike Dennis speaks with ecancertv at BSH 2016 about the most recent results of the multinational AML17 trial. Most notably, he describes a specific benefit to patients with FLIP3 mutations. He also reflects on study construction between American, English and European trials, and how to optimise techniques for best patient outcomes.

On today's show Filmmaker Mike Dennis. Mike is the founder of Reelblack, currently in its 16th year. Through Reelblack Mike has exercised his multifaceted talents as a production house for hire, as a producer for his own films, making content for their YouTube channel ReelBlack TV (currently at 5 million hits and climbing) and as a promoter of over 200 film events in and around the Philly area. Check out their regularly updated website at Reelblack.com Besides being a ingratiating conversationalist, Mike is a graduate of film programs of both NYU and the American Film Institute. Mike's own story as a filmmaker spans a fascinating era in black cinema, heading to New York at few years after Spike Lee broke out of NYU with SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT, then going to school in LA in the 90s, where he interned on THE COSBY SHOW and was a witness to Hollywood in the years when films like The HOUSE PARTY series, MALCOLM X and Mario Van Peebles POSSE were being produced. Dialogue is the art of putting words in the character's mouths. It helps the writer tell the story and is a great way to reveal back-story (what happened to bring the characters to this point). Dialogue is also used to refer to a situation that one or more of the characters already knows about, but the reader does not. Sometimes dialogue is used to hint at what might come. Writing compelling dialogue can be challenging, because it often is not the way people really speak. As a vehicle that moves the story along, it shouldn't be dull, boring or too lengthy. Our guest for this show is Mike Dennis, who writes outstanding dialogue. Mike is the author of eight mystery books and multiple short stories. He also is a narrator for audio books and a former professional musician. We will discuss how to create dynamic dialogue in books--do's, don't's and tips and techniques. In addition, with Mike's expertise in audiobooks, we will touch on the importance of doing it right if the book is also planned as an audiobook. Call-ins to the live show are welcome.
