Water is the most critical substance for all of us including those microscopic critters. The 5 Second Rule talks to expert, Dr. Janice Stout about what pathogens lurk in our water systems and when left unchecked can cause all kinds of problems for us. We all know to be on the alert when traveling but who knew that sinks, showers and ice machines can be a source of waterborne pathogens. This episode is timely given recent news of natural disasters like hurricanes and flooding that impact local water supplies as well as those created by poor management of municipal water systems. Hosted by: Silvia Quevedo About our Guest(s): Janet E. Stout, PhD Dr. Janet E. Stout is president and director of Special Pathogens Laboratory, and research associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. An infectious disease microbiologist, Dr. Stout is recognized worldwide for seminal discoveries and pioneering research in Legionella. Her expertise includes prevention and control strategies for Legionnaires’ disease in building water systems. Dr. Stout’s more than 30 years of research is published in peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals. She has also authored textbook chapters on Legionella and Legionnaires’ disease, including the Legionella chapter in the APIC Text. An advocate for prevention, Dr. Stout assisted in developing the first Legionella prevention guideline (1993) in the United States, which continues to serve as a model for national and global health agencies and organizations. Additionally, she serves on the ASHRAE Legionella standard committee for Legionella Guideline 12 and the SPC 188 committee for ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188-2015 Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems, the first U. S. standard passed in June 2015. Dr. Stout also serves on the board of directors for the Cooling Technology Institute.

THE DOOMED & STONED SHOW -Season 5, Episode 8- "If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us shall we not revenge?" (William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice) Human existence is complex, but the emotional life of an individual is another level of complication altogether. In this mini-series, the Doomed & Stoned podcast has been honing its musical prowess on our common struggle, beginning with MELANCHOLY (ep. 3), which led to DEPRESSION (ep. 4), then ANGUISH (ep. 5), which morphed into SPITE (ep. 6), and in this episode a spirit of REVENGE. Yes, revenge is considered an emotion, with acts of vengeance being the tangible outcome of this emotion-driven attitude. Inspiration from this episode came from an unlikely place, the 1984 film 'Red Dawn' and in particular the clandestine meeting between a father and his sons, the singularly most heart-wrenching scene in the movie and perhaps in all of popular cinema that year. It's relatable because we have all encountered vultures who prey upon the ignorance and vulnerability of the unsuspecting. Perhaps you can encounter this week's edition of The Doomed & Stoned Show as a kind of musical revenge fantasy. Certainly, I had fun hunting down this eclectic collection of songs -- all of them from the rock and metal genres, with doom, sludge, thrash, and classic rock represented. Give ear... PLAYLIST: WRONGED 1. Alice in Chains - "Grind" 2. Ice Princess - "Hour of Revenge" 3. Motörhead - "Sweet Revenge" 4. The Heard - "Revenge Song" 5. Blade of the Ripper - "Revenge" 6. Pulling cardigans at the ready, it’s another episode of Lovejoy Actually! This week Pol loses the plot, Em raises her concerns for the academic community (careful Prof!) and we discover yet another language Helen can speak all whilst enjoying a suit made of exciting thread, arguing about egg spoons and being delighted by a cameo from Mickey La Souris (who now seems to be living in Friar Park… we think.)Furious squirrels, safe caravans and dea- sorry, DED Lizards all feature in this return to Lovejoy peril, and frankly, we’re delighted!Antique(s) of the Week: Tinker’s suit, Jane’s cardi and a possibly cursed Colombian funerary raft made of gold. The original Lovejoy episode was written by Alan Clews and directed by William Brayne.
Carrie Jo Chernoff Hicks has a great story to tell, and I'm so glad she was able to join me for this episode. Originally from Maryland, Carrie Jo grew up loving karate, but then she didn't... Instead of giving it up, she stuck with it, however, eventually earning a black belt. That experience taught her many life lessons that stayed with her, even today. Once Carrie Jo moved to the Crested Butte area, she took up outdoor sports like so many of us have. In Mountain Biking, she took on the Montezuma's Revenge race- a 24 hour stage race that no one ever finished. Competing in the Crested Butte Extreme Skiing championships (now more commonly known as "Big Mountain"), she and her husband did so well they were able to make the down payment on their home. Today, Carrie Jo has taken all of those experiences and used them to help her clients at her Crossfit gym, Synergy Athlete. As I listened to Carrie Jo, it struck me that she is a great motivator thanks to her life experiences and how she can relate those to goal setting. Finally, we discuss community, and a terrific non-profit that she supports. For more information about Synergy Athlete, Crossfit, and Carrie Jo Chernoff Hicks, visit the website: Synergy Athlete. Or the Facebook Page: Synergy Athlete on Facebook If you would like to learn more about the Crested Butte fund, or donate to it, visit their website: Crested Butte Fund PS- Sorry for the rough audio on both the intro and the "Crested Butte Real Estate Minute". The interview is fine, however. I was on vacation and did not have my microphone with me, so I did the best I could with what I had :)

Metroidvania Chronicles gets a new name and look, but it's the same old retrospective journey through the evolution of exploratory action-RPGs and platformers all the same.
