Russia expert and author Dr Jade McGlynn joins Nick Cohen from Kyiv to talk about Ukraine's tragedy - a Russia that has been badly run by bad men - with a couple of rare exceptions here and there. And how this also happens to be Russia's tragedy. Jade explains how the recent "Mad March on Moscow" by Wagner militia mafioso Yevgeny Prigozhin is a symptom of Vladamir Putin's dysfunction and despotism, and how hatred flows now flows between Ukraine and Russia like drones and missiles.Jade McGlynn - widely acknowledged as a brilliant and insightful author and Russian observer - is the author of two recent landmark books relating to the tragedy now playing out in Ukraine - Russia's War, published by Pushkin House, and Memory Makers, just published by Bloomsbury. Memory Makers, The Politics of the past in Putin's Russia, is based on Jade's analysis since 2014 of the start of Russia's illegal incursions into Ukraine. The book examines how Russia's repeated misadventures into its neighbour's territories are driven by the obsessive lies and myths it's gaslit into believing by Putin, and too many of his predecessors.Support the showListen to The Lowdown from Nick Cohen for in-depth analysis of the issues and events that shape our lives and futures. Things are getting curiouser and curiouser as we begin our Alice in Wonderland month! In this episode, Drew and Cassie discuss Alice, the 2009 TV min-series from Showcase and Syfy starring Caterina Scorsone, Kathy Bates, Andrew Lee-Potts, Matt Frewer, Colm Meany, Philip Winchester, and Tim Curry. This Alice is a contemporary judo instructor, and her Wonderland is reimagined as a dystopia injected with elements of sci-fi and fantasy. Alice finds herself wrapped up in plot to take down the Queen of Hearts, who has been kidnapping people from Alice's world and sucking out their emotions to sell to the people of Wonderland. In addition to discussing this fascinating version of Alice's circumstances, we talk about the movie's design choices, the new functions of the various Wonderland characters, our opinions on Mad March, the funky timeline, the incorporation of The Walrus and The Carpenter poem, how excited we both were to recognize Matt Frewer, and much more!Next time, join us to discuss Alice in Wonderland, the 1999 TV film starring Tina Majorino, Whoopi Goldberg, Miranda Richardson, Martin Short, Gene Wilder, Ben Kingsleigh, Christopher Lloyd, Robbie Coltrane... and many, many more!Join the discussion! Goodbye, Mad March, I knew him, Horatio. Another year, another Adelaide Fringe has passed us by. But this time, instead of fanfare and much backslapping about ticket sales and success, we had a strong undercurrent of discontent from some of the more 'fringe'like performers. Tonight, we hold a round table discussion with an Adelaide Festival show director, Andy Packer, who had a sell out show, The Young King, and we talk to an actor and director from a Fringe production, Eddie Morrison and Dave Hirst, who put on Maximum Breakdown at The Fringe. Plus, we'll include comments from English Fringe performer, Juliette Burton, and Irish performer, Aidan Killian, with their perspectives on the Adelaide Fringe as 'outsiders'. For the Made To Move Minute, Max Martin ... will conduct a postmortem on the first quarter of 2016 from a health perspective. Wine tonight is S C Pannell Winemakers' 2014 Tempranillo. In IS IT NEWS, Nigel quizzes us on our knowledge of ... disappointing theatre. The Adelaide Visa Council features ... two curious cases. And we head to Hindley Street in the Musical Pilgrimage. But first, we launch with David Washington from InDaily with his midweek news wrap, Talk Of The Town. After wowing with his 5 co-conspirators and their puppet mastery of the faceless leather characters Boris and Sergei, Dylan Tate sat down to talk about the amazing troupe, their style, and what Boris and Sergei's 2015 Adelaide Fringe audiences get to experience.
Canadian Sue Huff is being directed by her husband here in Adelaide at the 2015 Adelaide Fringe as she performs in the slightly risque theatrical comedy Spring Alibi at the Bakehouse.
