Traurig. Du möchtest mehr über unsere Werbepartner erfahren? Unraveling the origins—this episode speaks volumes! Here's what's to come in today's episode: * In this episode, our hosts delve into the Takiwātanga meme—a popular social media trend often showcasing stunning Polynesian women and claiming that Takiwātanga is the Māori word for autism, meaning "in their own time and space."* Our hosts trace the origins of this meme, revealing that while the term's creator is neurotypical, his intentions were genuinely positive. Kari O'Pai, a Māori linguist, developed the term Takiwātanga as part of a project aimed at depathologizing mental health terminology in the Māori language.* O'Pai's glossary was designed to curate terms for mental health, disability, and addiction that avoid pathologization, with the goal of fostering a positive and empowering indigenous Māori worldview.* Our hosts explore how well-meaning neurotypicals often attempt to romanticize or exoticize autism by introducing alternative terms—while many autistics simply prefer to use the actual word to describe themselves.* Matt and Angela discuss labels, how we relate to them, and why person-first language can be harmful to autistics.* We also explore how colonizer language inevitably pathologizes everyone—except white people.* In this episode, we also discuss support needs and how even neurotypicals require support at times. After all, we are all inextricably human. However, it's the society we live in, with its hyper-independent culture, that demonizes those with support needs.* In this episode, we also discuss support needs and how even neurotypicals require support at times. After all, we are all inextricably human. However, it's the society we live in, with its hyper-independent culture, that demonizes those with support needs.* We dive into candid discussions about global perspectives on disability, cultural appropriation, identity labels, and how colonialism is inherently b******t.“I don't like the idea of any allistic telling me what I have to do, ever. I may have PDA, but I have *especially* selective PDA about allistics telling me how to be autistic. Cause yeah, I will make eye contact if I want to. You can't make me not make eye contact.” - Matt“Do we have a fancy word for cancer or broken leg? It's just f*****g autism. No, it's just cancer. It's just broken leg. It's just autism.” - Angela “Did you know that even neurotypicals need some support once in awhile? Fancy that, cuz humans. But that's the thing. We live in such a colonialistic, bastardized society that says ‘lift yourself up by your bootstraps, be hyper-independent all the time, forever, always. And it frowns upon support needs of any kind.” - MattDid you notice how the Takiwātanga meme has sparked conversations about autism and language? In today's episode, we explore its origins, cultural significance, and the impact of alternative terms for autism. Thanks for tuning in!

Ali Akbar Natiq was born in a village in the Punjab province of Pakistan, where he received his initial education. Later due to financial constraints he started to work as a mason, and became skilled at building domes, mosques and minarets. His love for education, literature and history specifically, had him complete his BA and MA degrees privately. He read Arabic books brought for him by his father Iraq and Kuwait where he worked. In 1998, Natiq lived in the Middle East for some time as a laborer. Natiq's experiences from his life in the village, as a mason and later as a laborer in the middle east come to life in his stories, that are at once poignant, tender and deeply moving.

I'm Sandy along with Rich beam and we're getting back into it. We dropped the ball last week and we dropped the ball on a week that was pretty exciting in the week of golf. Scott rich is joining us from somewhere in Scotland today. I'm at my home studio in Austin, Texas, but following you on a social at Beamer PGA has been fun. It looks like you're having a great time. Scotland's a wonderful Rich Beem (02:02.546) Scotland's a great time. If you're following me Instagram, you got to see the post that I put out this morning. I was driving from Trune up to Carnoose where I am now and I pulled off and I was a little bit hungry, but I needed some gas too. So I thought, you know, I just do it all in one go swoop. It's not like the U .S. where, know, you can go into these massive truck stops and do that. You kind of kind of pick and choose. And I kind of thought that I was picking and choosing one of these, you know, bigger places. It turned out it was just a gas station and then there's little building right next to it. And I'm like, I'm to go fill up the gas and then I'm going go right there and just grab a, they call breakfast BAP, which is basically just like a bacon and bacon sandwich essentially in a hot tea and just boogie on the road. So I walk into this, this little shop and the guy from behind goes, my God, rich bean. And he's this, he's this shorter Asian gentlemen. who's got a Scottish accent, but not a heavy Scottish accent. It's kind of a little bit, I'm kind of guessing that he wasn't born in Scotland, but he starts talking about, remember Glenn, goes just up the road and he starts going on and on and on. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. And he was just, he was the neatest, nicest guy. And I'm like, this is why I love this country. I just pulled off for gas and a little breakfast sandwich. And this guy is going on and bought me breakfast this morning at his place. And then I gave him a couple dozen or I gave him a couple sleeves of golf balls that I had just in the bag. And then I did this video. So I'm like, you know what? This is why I love sky. This is why I love traveling around the world is that by happenstance, this guy recognized me from Sky Sports Golf and I was just blown away. It was the funnest morning I've had. I I needed it to after a beat down on a long week work wise. But this guy was just the neatest and nicest guy. So anybody follows me on Instagram at B repuGA, just go check it out. It's really, really funny. This guy, and I think his name, but I think Sandy (03:47.749) Yeah, Sandy (03:59.109) Tanga, something like that, Rich Beem (03:59.377) Tango, tango, tango, tango, tango, yeah, something like that. I mean, couldn't hardly understand him. He was so excitable this morning and I was just like, I'm so happy that I made your morning and you made my morning. I can promise you Sandy (04:12.763) We are going to get into Rich's picks in just a moment. We've got the 3M at TPC Twin Cities this week. And of course we've got the senior open. We're going to focus on the 3M for your picks, which are coming up in just a moment. But briefly on the open championship, boy, I took it all in. I was up two mornings at 5 a .m. watching. I just love it. It's my favorite major. I just love the early morning and the style of golf and the look and the crowd and the There's something about it that I just, love it. I love that major. Rich Beem (04:48.494) It's incredible. It literally for me too, it's probably the most fun sporting events that I attend every year. mean, most of it's all golf related anyway, Sandy, as you well know, but you know, the Masters, even being a past champion of the PGA, for me, it's just so much fun because the crowds, the atmosphere, the excitement, the energy that they have and it's early, you early Monday all the way to the end of golf on Sunday. mean, people are just coming in droves. And I was up at 5 a .m. too, just a little bit different time zone than you. But, you know, we put in some long hours and I always kind of, you know, whinge about it, complain about it little bit. But it's just like, you know what, I just got to be a part of one of the greatest championships of all time. And it's never lost on me, thankfully, you know, but it was really amazing. And what a great week. And again, the people in Scotland are just, they're amazing. If anybody has not been over this part of the world to play golf, as you've been here, Sandy, it's Sandy (05:55.949) It really is, it's hard to explain. And I'll tell you what, as Rich enjoys a pint, as we record the podcast, good for you, and watching it on television, and I did this during the US Open too, I watched you guys on Sky, on Peacock, and I loved the British commentators, especially during the open. Rich Beem (06:02.96) Listen, it's the evening time. Sandy (06:23.821) I wish we had them, we got them in America the whole round because it just feels different when they do. It's just, to me, it's Rich Beem (06:33.107) And we've got, I think one of the best voices of the game of golf, Ewan Murray, who's this eloquently spoken and nothing gets too excitable. And it's just, he's very, very good at what he does. And then you have Nick Fowler sitting to his left. And then you got me over to the right, this hillbilly that calls the bird on 16, a creek, you know, on Thursday morning. And I'm like, what am I doing here half the time? You know, and I, but I think that's also what makes, you know, everything so fun is Sandy (06:37.508) Rich Beem (07:02.983) You know, Peter Alice was the voice of the open. He was the best of the best. There's no doubt. And, sometimes I think about that, like, you know, when I would come over here and was playing in it, you know, still turn on BBC and watch it and listen to it just for Peter Alice. I'm like, this guy's just unbelievable. And, you know, and sometimes I'm sitting there commenting, like, I'm commentating the same thing that Peter Alice used to be, and I'm nowhere in his league. But again, though, that's also the beauty of this game that we play because I'm sitting here next to, you know, broadcast legend in Neu and Murray, six time major champion, three time open champion, Nick Baudo, Hill Billy Beamer here. And I am just having a gas. I just, think it's the greatest tournament to have fun with too, because it doesn't need to be all pomp and circumstance and things like that. You can have a lot of fun with it. And I think that the folks over here enjoy it for the most But it's such a great honor to be part of the broadcast because we are the main broadcasters over here in the UK now, Sky Sports. It's so much fun. Sandy (08:15.429) man, it's gotta be cool for you. mean, the parallels between like what you just described in the broadcast booth and the game of golf are kind of similar too in that it's the only game where like I could never play football with Patrick Mahomes, but I could play golf with Rich Bean. You know what I mean? I could play golf with Cernic Faldo. You know what I mean? And by the way, I'm a big Faldo fan and I probably asked you this before. Is it intimidating to be in the booth with him Rich Beem (08:36.379) Yeah, that's exactly Sandy (08:44.484) is he, you know what I mean? Cause I would be scared to Rich Beem (08:48.372) Yeah, it probably was initially in the first time that I ever did it was with CBS. And so it kind of caught me off guard, but you know, he, to be fair though, he, he did like the first ever time I worked with him, Sandy, you'll love this colonial one year. I was, it was on a Thursday and I was following Jordan Spieth's group and this must've been back in like 15, I it was like 2015. And anyways, first hole out, Jordan's on ninth hole and he hits his second shot on nine up onto the shelf and the pins down front left. And all of a sudden I hear, I set up the shot for Jordan, for the putt, and all of sudden I hear from Faldo, goes, Rich, how would you hit this putt? I was totally caught off guard. I said, well, I would actually line it up like I normally would, but then I dragged the toe of the putter, I put the ball towards the toe of the putter. and I'd hit it off that. That way I could make a competent stroke but the ball would come off a little bit softer, a little bit slower. And I went out. And he comes back and goes, yes, yes, yes. No, I never did Mean he's like marking his territory a little bit because you know I was the other guy you know the other major champion on the broadcast But you know I I've never I don't think I've been intimidated by him And I guess probably because I've never really known him I just I don't know I've never been fearful working with with anybody to be fair You know there's some there's a lot of guys that bring other things to the table. I mean you've been the broadcast in business, you know Sandy (10:00.805) Yeah. Sandy (10:29.157) Yeah, I was just thinking, there's not really anybody I'd be intimidated to be on the radio with. That was a dumb question, I guess. Rich Beem (10:29.492) for your time. Rich Beem (10:33.724) Yeah, we're well, no, it's not a dumb question to be fair at all, because I think that, you know, in, you know, I still look up to so many people like I get intimidated by, know, sometimes by asking questions of golfers, namely Tiger Woods, like I hate asking, you know, when I had to to do work in COVID, there's a couple of times where I had to interview Tiger and I can't stand that. I'm like, I don't want to sit there and interview you because that is just like, what if I'm working alongside him? I got no issue, but I'm like, I'm looking at Tiger like, you shot 74 today, but you know what? You probably should have shot 62 because that's what you did every time that we played, you know, that I played against you. Sandy (11:12.867) Rich funny story real quick and we're to get into your predictions in just a moment. But there was a social media clip and someone asked Tiger what is the what loss in his career stung the most. I was waiting for it to say the PGA the O2 PGA when you beat him. I was waiting. I was like, that's what he's going to say. That's what he's going to say. And he didn't. He talked about the Y. Yang PGA because because he was leading the tournament. Rich Beem (11:37.91) I, you know what, that was actually my, and I played with him the first two days there, Sandy, and every single day, I'm like, this guy's gonna win by 90. He's gonna blow everybody away. He's just gonna take this two, and he just, and he didn't, know, why he passed him? didn't have, he didn't have the goods on Sunday, which was so unreal to me. Sandy (11:48.634) Hahaha Rich Beem (12:04.961) I, to this day, it's like that, that I can see that I can see that being the biggest loss because he was actually, I think he was leading. I think it was the first time he actually lost a Only time he'd lost. Yep. I, I, listen, I can see that clear as day, but yeah, that, would have, I mean, cause listen, I had a bet everything that I owned that he was going to win going into Sunday with that week, Sandy (12:12.741) Yeah, he was. Only time he had lost when leading on Sunday, yes. Sandy (12:29.039) Yeah. I was waiting for him to say the loss to rich beam though. That's what I was waiting for. They would have been nice, right? okay. So let's jump into, moving along the golf. seems like the golf season never ends. It's one thing to another traveling circus. You're going to be covering the senior open at car new St back in the S you're playing in Rich Beem (12:32.993) Wow, that would have been nice too. Rich Beem (12:47.816) And playing. yeah, I'm here to play too, baby. I kicked the rust off the body today and I got out there and yeah, played a few holes, it great. Sandy (12:55.653) your pet past major exempt. What does that Rich Beem (12:59.613) I think that's what it is. Yeah, I think that's what my, my exemption into it is. don't really care. I just love this tournament. I love coming over here and competing in links golf courses and, and carnusity is probably my, it's, it's my favorite one. It's the hardest one, I think of the bunch, but I think it's, it's my favorite because you have to come and play a very intimidating golf course, which I'm not intimidated by it anymore. I just love it. I think I kind of have a good idea how to play You gotta hit, you gotta make quality swings, you gotta hit quality shots, but I love carnage. I've played well here a number of times and I'm excited. I can't wait to put you up on Thursday. Sandy (13:40.923) So what does your day look like? mean, how does it work with Sky Sports? you going to, let's say you tee off in the morning, do you have to work that afternoon? Or do they give you the whole day off as long as you're Rich Beem (13:47.736) Yeah, pretty much. I'll go back. Yeah, I'll go back. if I see off the number I tee up in the morning, because everything goes off in the first tee here, as it does in the open, I will, once I get done with my morning round, then I'll pop into commentary in the afternoon for an hour and a half, two hours. I don't think I'll have to go in when I'm doing after when I tee off in the afternoon. If I do, it only be for like 30, 45 minutes, which I don't think they'll make me do it. And then and then on the weekend after I get done playing. So my goal is to have a late enough tee time in the afternoon that I don't get a chance to go into commentary because that means I'm playing well and I'm in contention. Sandy (14:25.925) Yeah, I was gonna say, you must be hitting it pretty good if you're in the tournament. Rich Beem (14:30.304) You know what? I'm hitting it pretty good. it's, you know, again, it's coming off, you know, a hundred hour work week last week and you're trying to, last thing you want to do is look at a yardage book and figure it all out. But, you know, I guess it's just because it's Cardenusty and I know this golf course, so I'm really excited about Sandy (14:38.511) Yeah, well. Sandy (14:51.311) You got a local guy on the back? Rich Beem (14:53.375) I do, in fact he's a tour caddy on the European tour for a guy by the name of, well, they just separated, but he's been out on the tour for about four years now, but he's a local guy born and raised here and he knows the Scouts course as good as anybody. Thanks, ask me a blast. Yeah, ask me a blast. Sandy (15:09.371) That's cool, that's cool. Well, good luck. That'll be fun to follow you. We'll be watching for sure. Let's go back across the Atlantic to the United States and we head to the Twin Cities, TPC Twin Cities is where this week's 3M is. Who do you like in this? Rich Beem (15:25.495) I've got Tony Finau, Tom Hogy, and Eric Van Royen. And the reason being is I think Tony Finau is playing extremely well right now. He didn't have a very good open championship, but he also played in the afternoon on Friday when the, probably the worst weather came in. Tom Hogy and Eric Van Royen. Tom Hogy is from Minnesota. So he's a local guy. One of the best ball strikers we have on tour. I think he's amazing. And Eric Van Royen is South African, but he went to school in Minnesota and he's got one of his teammates on the bag. He's been counting for years now. And I think that they make a dynamic deal. So I'm taking Tony because of how he's been playing as of late. I can see him kind of bubbling up to win again. And then I've got two local guys just because I think that is, I think that they're going to be out there with a lot of fans behind him and that's what you Sandy (16:23.715) Alright, go back. I got a question for you about the about last week's open after the tournaments over and the trophy has been handed out and what's the town like afterwards? Is it is the party just rage on or is everyone like it's been a Rich Beem (16:38.018) Yeah, these folks don't say no. I mean, I actually went into town. So I stayed over last night and I went into town to meet up with some friends of mine that actually, they volunteer at the Open as security for the players. They're all special ex -military in the UK, in Scotland, but they just go, they follow the players around and you know, they're, mean, Sandy (16:42.681) Yeah Rich Beem (17:07.294) They're still tuned in pretty good. They're taking some of their skills that they've had in the military and they put them to good use. fact, there's a guy that comes over actually every year. That's a two star retired Admiral. And so, yeah, so I've gotten to know him very well. Dano. I couldn't tell you his real name, but that's his call sign. Dano. I wish it was Bookum Dano, but anyways, but we went into town last night. I met them for dinner and Sandy (17:19.855) Mm -hmm, that's cool. Rich Beem (17:37.159) I couldn't believe how, how many people were still in town and it's not, it's not local. I can promise you that Trune is not that big of a place and it's just a, it's just heaving. You know, there's just so many people there saying that are just hanging out. and it's not really any players, maybe a few caddies that you can see that, you know, maybe teed off late and hanging out, and just kind of, you know, having some fun before they have to flight, catch your flight back home. today, but I mean, these folks just, love it. They love the atmosphere. They love her and it was the town was absolutely rocking last night. I left, I left about nine 30, thankfully, because I can't, no, I left, I left town. Yeah. I went down there by about eight o 'clock. I stayed for about an hour and a half. And I'm like, okay, I got to get going back. Cause I knew that I had to wake up wake up and had to drive two and a half hours to get here today, but it was awesome. Sandy (18:15.589) That's Sandy (18:19.387) golf course you left at 930? I left town. Rich Beem (18:33.443) It was so much fun being down there and there's people out there who just hollering and hooting and just, you know, it was awesome. This is you would expect. Sandy (18:41.477) Cool, very, very cool. Well, good luck this week. I'm excited that you're in the senior open this week. It's been a while since you teed it up on tour professionally. Rich Beem (18:48.024) Me too. Yeah, it's, yeah, I haven't seen it often played since a senior PGA, which is back in May, but yeah, the body's okay. It's just, you know, why is it that we get a little bit older and like one day your right shoulder hurts and it might hurt for like three or four days. And then that pain goes away and all of a sudden your left knee hurts. Like, why is it? It's not for wimps. There's no doubt. And thankfully you've got this, this gal, this Irish gal that is the physio trailer over here. Sandy (19:11.099) Okay, getting old is not for wussies. Rich Beem (19:21.372) And she just walks in like Mr. Miyagi. And rubs her hands together and she's just amazing. So I'm going to be like spending every waking moment that I can inside that physical fan to have her, you know, get the pain out. it's an amazing, it's an amazing week, Sandy. just, I'm so excited about, A, not really working because I'm not working, you know, playing golf though and I got a great guy in the bag it's gonna be a great Sandy (19:53.795) good man. It's kind of stupid to say make sure to have fun but I know wherever Rich Beam goes, Rich Beam will have Rich Beem (20:00.304) Rich is going to have a smile on his face and he's going to make sure that everybody has a story to tell afterwards. Yeah, I'm excited. It's going be awesome. It's going be fun. Sandy (20:10.245) All right, have fun. Thanks guys for listening. Make sure you like and subscribe to this podcast.
