We're playing two not very classics of their respective genres today as we go back to the back half of the 90s to play an early action game and a relatively early 3D platformer. We're kind of split on which game we prefer along lines I expect you'd predict, but we both had a pretty good time with both games anyway! Also, before that, Jackson gives the MOTHER of all segment 1 updates. At 16:15 or so until 1:15:30 Jackson's Audacity file broke and we had to use the backup. Em's a little quiet during this section but it's mostly okay. I did my best with the edit. Sorry about that! Thank you so much as always for listening, please rate and review the podcast, and tell all your friends on whatever social media you call home that they should check us out. A couple of standout releases in this episode... but first, we have to survive another version of Lode Runner. Look, I like Lode Runner. Great game. But there's been a lot of it here in the mid '80s! This time, the monk/robot guys win. Beyond that, however, we have the final entry in Activision's brief dalliance on SG-1000 (or maybe Sega's brief dalliance with Activision?): H.E.R.O. It's a strong conversion from 2600 that loses none of the original quality or originality yet manages to spruce up the visuals and replace the retro helicopter backpack with a jetpack, which of course makes this the objectively superior rendition. And then there's Champion Hockey, a game that actually makes me angry. No, I'm not angry because it's bad; quite the opposite. My brain tells me I'm supposed to find sports games interminable, and yet I love this ice hockey game. Absolutely unacceptable. Production notes: SG-1000 footage in this episode was captured from a combination of Sega SG-1000 II with (with Card Catcher; RGB amp mod by @iFixRetro ) and @Analogue Mega Sg with card adapter module and DAC. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition Switch | PS4 | PS5 | Xbox One | Xbox Series X|S | PC Thursday Nov 11, 2021 The first truly “open world non linier” game is highly disputed due to the definition of open world being so broad. But the most common examples are: Jet Rocket, a 1970 Sega electro-mechanical arcade game that, while not a video game, predated the flight simulator genre to give the player free roaming capabilities DND, a 1975 text-based adventure game for the PLATO system that offered non-linear gameplay. Other early examples of open world gameplay (we obviously can't name all of them here. But here are some notable examples): - Hydlide (1984) and The Legend of Zelda (1986) were among the first open-world games, along with Ultima. Sierra On-Line's 1992 adventure game King's Quest VI has an open world; almost half of the quests are optional, many have multiple solutions, and players can solve most in any order. The DMA Design (Rockstar North) game Body Harvest (1998) Mario 64 VS Banjo Kazooie. The game's large interactive environments, wealth of options, level of detail and the scope of its urban sandbox exploration has been compared to later sandbox games like Grand Theft Auto III and its sequels, Sega's own Yakuza series, Fallout 3, and Deadly Premonition. It feels like Famicom is kind of playing catch-up with SG-1000 this episode, as every game appearing here arrived on shelves in the wake of a Sega-published equivalent—either the exact same game (as in Space Invaders), one exploring the same root concept in different ways (Soccer), or a game with almost suspicious conceptual and mechanical similarities (Formation Z). Of course, the Nintendo version of these games absolutely eclipsed Sega's, right? Well... maybe not always. Broderbund was one of the most important publishers of the 80s and 90s, releasing seminal titles such as Choplifter, Prince of Persia, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, Print Shop, and Myst. But behind the scenes was a family, a true band of siblings, that proved that business didn't have to be a cutthroat winner-take-all affair. Gary Carlston, together with his brother Doug and sister Cathy, helped create a legendary company with a legacy like few others. Gary tells his story from humble beginnings peddling TRS-80 games to local shops to becoming a global powerhouse and, finally, having to call it quits to preserve the family. Another step along the Road to NES Works this week as we look again at the next round of software releases for Nintendo Famicom. Unlike last time, only one of these games made its way to the U.S. on NES, the other two (Galaxian and Devil World) seemingly being skipped over due to datedness and, uh, satanism? What was this, 2021?
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we celebrate our five years of podcasting by doing something a little bit different. On today’s episode:I Only Have Eyes for YouI was listening to Spotify, playing classic Lode Runner online (yes, I am played-the-original-Lode Runner-on-an-Apple IIe-years-old) and falling down Spotify holes, when a song by Timothy Bloom came on. I liked the sound of his voice and went to his artist page to find that I was already following him and had even “clicked the heart button” on one of his songs it’s called The Beginning (Work it Out).I began playing it to refresh my memory and heard the haunting first notes of I Only Have Eyes for You by The Flamingos sampled in the background. My guests today are Mare Sheppard and Raigan Burns, the founders of Metanet Software and the creators of N++. We talk about the promise of early programming, the impact of Sonic the Hedgehog, how they met and bonded over freeware games, the design lessons of Wip3out, an NHL 2001 tournament that has spanned over a decade, why a broad education is perfect for video games and, in perhaps the most controversial statement on the show thus far, how Crash Team Racing is better than Mario Kart. As well as chatting enthusiastically about a whole bunch of video games, we also hit on the development of N, how it felt to lead the charge for indie games on Xbox Live Arcade, the fear of selling out, and the positives and negatives of being a perfectionist. This week we're playing a trio of coin-op classics updated for the go-go 90s: the N64 version of what may be the greatest arcade game ever made, ROBOTRON 64; the surprisingly fun puzzle-platformer LODE RUNNER 3D; and PAPERBOY, one of the most bizarrely ugly games on this or any system. Japanese arcade giant Irem makes its NES debut—or at least its debut as a publisher under its own steam. Spelunker and Sqoon make for interesting companion pieces to Lode Runner and Bungeling Bay, one being an Irem PC port published by Brøderbund and the other being a game published by Irem itself. Anyway, both are hilariously difficult.
Tanx for downloading! This week, we're tankful to be talking about BATTLETANX and BATTLETANX: GLOBAL ASSAULT, two fast and furious tank fighting games with an unexpectedly bizarre plot. Bennett Williamson joins us to discuss the history of the failed 3DO console, reminisce about scorched teddy bears, and enter a needlessly misogynistic post-apocalyptic future where women are used as currency. American publisher makes its NES (and console) debut with conversions of two of its own landmark computer titles: Doug Smith's Lode Runner and Will Wright's Raid on Bungeling Bay. Neither men had any direct involvement with these conversions, which instead were handled by Japanese developer Hudson. The result is a pair of visually overhauled (but generally quite faithful) ports that go a long way toward embodying the overall tone and style that would define NES games. At the same time, these ports speak to America and Japan's shared love of great games while highlighting the stylistic differences between east and west in the 8-bit era. A solid duo of classics... though perhaps a bit slow to reach the U.S. to have true impact here.

Isaiah 52:7-8How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”Listen! Your sentinels lift up their voices, together they sing for joy;for in plain sight they see the return of the Lord to Zion.//Isaiah 52 talks about watchmen, people on lookout, who lift up their voices and bring good news to those who wait, news about all the good things that God longs for and calls us to pursue with one another, things like peace, wholeness, and most of all, love. That’s what we recall in the celebration of Christ’s birth on Christmas: that love, vulnerable, fragile, just like the tender life of a baby born to immigrant parents running for their lives, is more powerful than anything in all the world. We can point those around us to the real meaning of Christmas no matter what day of the year it is, in how we forgive and seek forgiveness, in how we spend our money, in how we risk for love, in how we volunteer our time to causes that matter, in how we vote, in how we challenge boundaries between ourselves and others different from us, in how we hold open to hope even when circumstances are dire we can change the world by pointing it away from the darkness of hate and into the wonder of Christmas Day.-Minister Christian Peele//What will you do to point to the real meaning of Christmas?//This episode was written and recorded by Bruce Lamb. Doug Carlston, Broderbund CEO Doug Carlston was co-founder and CEO of the software publisher Broderbund. Broderbund published many hits across several platforms, including Bank Street Writer, Print Shop, A.E., Choplifter, Lode Runner, Karateka, Spelunker, David's Midnight Magic, and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. This interview occurred March 5, 2015. LINKS AtariMania.com's List of Br0derbund Games Teaser quotes: "So we thought it'd be funny to call it Br0derbund and put a slash through the O. Caused all kinds of grief." "There was a competition between us and a number of other companies like Sierra Online and Sirius Software to see how many [products] we could get on the best seller list at the same time. I think maybe the best we ever did was something like 6 products out of 30." "It was kind of a game: we had very talented engineers in-house who loved to try to put copy protection on, and sometimes carried it to unfortunate lengths." "I drove across the country and back over 5 weeks and sold about $15,000 worth of software, and often ended up staying at the homes of the people who owned the little computer stores. I would just look up a name of a computer store in every town I went through and zigzag across the country."
