Originally recorded August 10, 2024 Apologies for the very late upload, college has been kicking my heinie as of later and I haven't got time to edit episodes. But I should have some more free time coming up. Until then, have episode on the seminal 80s speed metal rock & roll classic, Ace of Spades by Motorhead!
Motorhead was formed after Lemmy was fired from psych rock pioneers Hawkwind. They aimed to combine the energy and defiance of the MC5 with the early rock and roll spirit of Little Richard. This week the fellows discuss Lemmy's growl, title-first songwriting, and accident-prone drummers. Ween set their hearts and spleens to being the brownest rock band on earth. And with The Mollusk, they made their undersea hallucinations a reality. This week's episode dives into an extremely influential and important record from Motorhead -- Ace of Spades. Unlike some of their British metal contemporaries, Motorhead weren't afraid to get down and dirty with the mix, nor were they afraid of playing at a breakneck speed.

Just as we find ourselves talking about early thrash, we get to discover the band how maybe, possibly, potentially started the whole thing. Key talking points - An arrest goes wrong via a technicality, when it comes to guitarists - two's a crowd, the Wild West of north London, Lemmy might have cooked the books on sales, a man too delicate to punch, Kyle gives us some real time reactions and Rich gets a ghostly visitor. The Dock 104.1FM on-air personality Josh Duncan joins me in Episode 30 to talk Motorhead, Sabbath, Nirvana, and a little Simon & Garfunkel. Josh and I have a great chat, including the strange emotional dichotomy of The Hip's final show, the last record I was actually excited about buying upon its release, the irony of alternative becoming mainstream, and Ozzy's unfortunate 80s Bea Arthur phase. And by the way, Josh's dog is named Ronnie James Dio. True fact. Duncan's playlist: Motorhead - Ace of Spades Simon & Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence The Tragically Hip - Grace, Too Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit Black Sabbath - War Pigs Bob Marley - Three Little Birds Steppenwolf - Snowblind Friend Bad Religion - New Dark Ages
It’s been a long time coming. We recorded this show back in August. We have no excuse…but better late than never! And, at least this podcast is about an excellent anime, Leiji Matsumoto and Daft Punk’s sci-fi masterpiece Interstella 5555. In this first part of our Interstella show, we talk about what the thing is, how it came together, our personal histories with it, and some high-level, spoiler-free stuff we really really like about it. If you’ve never seen this anime, we hope we can sell you on it, and if you have seen it, then we hope you’ll hear about it ONE MORE TIME. Also: what is the best scene in anime involving a shark? Who was the actress that inspired Leiji Matsumoto’s iconic female character design? Did Shadon spoil Harry Potter for you? Let us know. This week I am piling on the music snobbery. Oh, okay, I'm not really - if anything I'm undermining it with some truly guilty pleasures. There's not much modern fluffy pop music which I happen to enjoy despite my snobbery because... well, because I just don't think there's anything I can think of which fits that bill at the moment. I know nostalgic guilty pleasures and truly embracing low-brow music purely for the enjoyment of it aren't quite the same thing but I think I've budged about as far as I am going to go on this one. Girls Aloud are unlikely to ever make an appearance on this podcast, but there's a spot of memory-tickling being indulged in with picks from Kylie and Guns 'n' Roses. You can tell Mrs. Toad has been involvedin choosing a playlist when it contains Guns and fucking Roses, but she was sacked from co-presenting duties due to excessive drunkenness, so her imprint on this particular episode is in selections only, and not in the presence of her dulcet tones on the interwaves.
