Dr. Sandie Morgan is joined by Daniel Varon as the two discuss the important of retribution and restitution for victims of trafficking and abuse. Daniel Varon Daniel Varon joined the Zalkin Law firm in 2020 bringing his experience as an attorney in the Office of the District Attorney in Orange County.  He is an experienced trial attorney, having tried approximately 60 jury trials during his work as Deputy District Attorney. The California District Attorney Investigators Association recognized him as Prosecutor of the Year in 2017. While at the Orange County DA's office, Daniel worked in the Human Exploitation and Trafficking Unit (HEAT). He maintained a full caseload and tried the first human trafficking of a minor case, following the passage of Prop 35. As a Senior Deputy in the DA's office, he handled pre-trial writs in the California Court of Appeals, drafted and argued appeals in the California Court of Appeal and Superior Court appellate department, and drafted requests for review in the California Supreme Court. During his time with the Orange County DA, he was also deeply involved in developing and presenting comprehensive human trafficking training programs for law enforcement and prosecutors in 12 counties across California. He served as a subject matter expert for California's Commission on Peace Officer Standards and training for development of its human trafficking training video and the Post Institute of Criminal Investigations, advancing human trafficking investigations. Before his work at the Orange County District Attorney's office, he worked for the law firm of Gilbert, Kelly, Crowley and Jennett in Los Angeles. Key Points The vertical prosecution model is essential in ensuring effective outcomes for victims, as it dedicates prosecutors to human trafficking cases, encouraging collaboration with police and law enforcement. The success of the HEAT unit relied on building trust not only among law enforcement but also with juvenile defenders, victim service providers, and the courts, creating a comprehensive support system for trafficking victims.  Daniel now represents victims of childhood sexual abuse and human trafficking, and he stresses the significance of focusing on restitution for victims, highlighting the long-term impacts of sexual abuse. The criminal and civil justice systems have key distinctions, particularly regarding the representation of victims, with criminal prosecutors acting on behalf of the state. In contrast, civil attorneys advocate directly for the victims. It is important to balance empathetic support for victims while providing them with the necessary structure for independence and self-empowerment.   Resources Zalkin Law Firm Orange County District Attorney's Office  California District Attorney Investigators Association ‘Prosecutor of the Year' Award Human Exploitation and Trafficking Unit (HEAT) California Courts of Appeals California Supreme Court California's Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training Southwestern Law School Interview with Daniel Aaron 112: Juvenile Justice Inspiring Hope: An Interview with Hon. Pig butchering is worse than just manipulating someone and taking their money. It leaves them with emotional anguish. Once their finances have been drained, they lose their financial security and they no longer trust people. Today's guest is Erin West. Erin has been with the County of Santa Clara for 26 years and is a Deputy District Attorney. She specializes in cryptocurrency investigations and prosecutions.  Show Notes: [0:46] - Erin shares her background and what her role is as a Deputy District Attorney in Santa Clara County. [3:20] - Five years ago, Erin found herself working on prosecutions regarding SIM swapping and cryptocurrency hacks. [4:35] - The emotional impact of “just a financial crime,” is staggering. [7:38] - You never know who around you is a victim of some of these crimes. [8:18] - Erin describes the experience of being convinced to click a link herself.  [10:32] - Scammers will think about different things that would trigger someone into clicking a link. [13:40] - Pig butchering involves building trust with a victim and showing them a false plush lifestyle. [16:08] - A red flag is a text or social media message you may receive that seems misdirected or to a wrong number. [19:21] - It feels like the right thing to do when we feel the need to respond to the scammer with a “you've got the wrong number,” but that's how they start a conversation. [22:29] - In many cases, scammers bulk text a massive amount of phone numbers. But some people are specifically targeted on social media. [24:23] - Covid really accelerated this type of scam due to loneliness. [25:40] - A misconception is that these scams target the elderly. But it is not based on age at all. [27:03] - Unfortunately, law enforcement is not set up to be able to handle this type of crime. [28:18] - Erin explains that law enforcement doesn't tend to always lead with empathy when this type of crime is reported. [30:12] - It is important to report the crime to local law enforcement, but there are other places that the crime can be reported to in addition. [32:50] - Victims should be able to speak to a detective. [34:33] - Victims should be very wary of third party recovery programs. [37:26] - On the other side of things, a scammer could also be a victim of human trafficking and being forced to scam others. [39:40] - Scams are being operated on a massive scale and have a front of a corporate business. [41:14] - Initially, most of the cases seemed to have money moved out of the country. However, recently scammers have been found to be operating in the US. [44:04] - There is some hope and opportunities in recent months where money laundering has been intercepted. [46:41] - Progress in education and advocating for less victim shaming is moving in the right direction. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. Dennis Lee - Free Energy – Is It Possible? Global Sciences Congress 1996, DenverIn 1987 Dennis Lee discovered he could make free electricity - a rather astounding discovery for the son of two migrant farm workers. The possibilities this discovery presented both elated him and frightened him. He was elated that there was a simple solution to the pollution and energy problems that were destroying the balance of nature on our planet, and shaken at the size of the discovery he had made. Free, independently produced energy meant people no longer had to be hooked up to the central power lines. It meant no more offshore drilling for oil, or oil spills that were killing the oceans. It meant no more dependence on foreign oil. It meant water could be pumped into desert lands dying of drought, and crops could be grown to eliminate famine. It meant no more electric line leakage that causes a general depletion in health as well as cancers; no more greenhouse effect, air pollution, toxic waste or water pollution. It meant the health of the planet and its people could be restored. It meant a boom for the economy and new jobs for millions of unemployed workers. Since everything runs on energy, the implications to the economies of the developing as well as industrialised nations, of clean and simple, 'no cost-to-produce' energy was overwhelming. The responsibility of such a discovery was frightening. But, what was even more frightening was the response that Dennis Lee would encounter when he attempted to bring the technology that could accomplish all this to the people. His story began in 1985 when Dennis Lee introduced his Super Heat Pump in his native state of Washington on a risk-free 'system-for-savings' program. The heat pump was so efficient it could save 70-80% of heat and hot water costs, and when his marketing program proved to be highly successful, the central utility was not pleased with the competition. They encouraged the Attorney General's Office to bring a suit against Lee's company. The baseless lawsuit was an attempt to discredit him and the technology. Subsequently, his factory was broken into virtually every night, The media splashed bad publicity across the papers regularly, his financial backers were encouraged to pull out, and the Attorney General's Office encouraged his customers to back out of the deal. Papers stolen from his factory turned up in the possession of the Deputy District Attorney. Although it was in no one's interest (except perhaps the utilities) to put his company out of business, the Attorney General's Office attempted to do just that.Dennis Lee's customers signed petitions asking the Attorney General's Office to stop 'protecting' them and dismiss the suit, or at the very least allow him to be able to perform on their contracts. Despite the ridiculous civil suit that required his company to do what it was already doing, and the overwhelming obstacles placed in his way, Lee's company overcame. When it was obvious that the company could not be destroyed using these tactics, other methods followed. A hired plant solicited enough unrest to get an involuntary bankruptcy filed, although the company was in good financial shape at the time. When Lee proved he could still turn things around, the harassers arranged a hostile takeover of the company. Lee, who once believed that fascist tactics belonged to other governments, discovered his first hard lesson in the 'just-us' system: that here in America, law enforcement agencies are often used to protect powerful money interests and not the interests of the citizens. He quietly left to pick up the pieces elsewhere. He moved to Boston to continue his efforts with a company associate. It was here, less than one year after the utilities first destroyed his efforts, that he discovered he could make 'free electricity' using the technology of the Super Heat Pump. How ironic, after they had forced him out of business, that he would discover a technology that could put them out of business. He substantiated the discovery with three scientists of tremendous experience. One was a professor at MIT, one was an ex-Department of Defense scientist and an inventor himself, and the other was an ex-Boeing plant supervisor who had been an electrical engineer for 40 years. They each independently confirmed that the concept was sound. A demonstration was put together to prove the concept worked.www.thefacthunter.com

Chad O'Melia and Bryn Spejcher are hanging out at O'Melia's home when a roommate comes home but goes to take a shower. He starts hearing noises downstairs and when he hears the sounds of things breaking, he takes a look. The roommate sees furniture toppled, the couch is flipped over and covered in blood, and O'Melia is severely wounded.  O'Melia begs for help. Bryn Spejcher has attacked Chad O'Melia in a pot-induced rage.  When police arrive they find Chad O'Melia dead from over 100 stab wounds, and Bryn Spejcher crying and screaming hysterically. The bloody knife is still in her hands. As officers try to disarm her, Spejcher plunges the knife into her own neck.  Officers use a Taser and several baton blows before they can disarm Spejcher finally. Bryn Spejcher is charged with murder with special allegations of using a deadly weapon, a crime involving great violence, violent conduct that indicates a danger to society, and being armed with and using a weapon in the commission of the crime. Spejcher posts bail and remains out on bail over the next 5-years of delays to allow for hearings and experts to provide studies. Prosecutors reduced the charge to involuntary manslaughter after their expert psychologist agreed with defense experts that Spejcher was suffering from cannabis-induced psychosis when she stabbed O'Melia to death. When the case finally gets to trial there is no argument about whether Bryn Spejcher killed Chad O'Melia or if her psychosis was legitimate.  During the trial, the LA Times reports, a medical expert testifies that Spejcher's behavior is the result of cannabis-induced psychosis . According to the National Library of Medicine, a diagnosis of the disorder is given when hallucinations or delusions materialize shortly after consuming cannabis. According to the VC Star, Spejcher's defense attorneys claim that their client was "involuntarily intoxicated," and that O'Melia had allegedly bullied and intimidated her into smoking the last bit of marijuana.  A jury finds Bryn Spejcher guilty of involuntary manslaughter in a killing triggered by cannabis psychosis, but Ventura County Superior Court Judge David Worley announced Spejcher would be sentenced to two years probation and a suspended prison sentence of four years. Additionally, we revisit Bob's previous Cognitive Crucible appearance and discuss the importance of governance and taking other people's perspectives. Research Question: Bob Jones suggests as interested student examine:  Is political conflict internal to a single system inherently different than political conflict between two or more systems; and if so, how, why and so what? How is the modern Chinese effort to expand their sovereignty to match their expanded power distinct from, or similar to, the US efforts to do the same in the 1890 to 1914 timeframe? If one expands the definition of unconventional warfare (UW) to the leveraging of foreign political grievances to advance or secure one's interests, do al Qaeda and ISIS conduct UW? Does the presence of absence of violence lend strategic insight to the nature of a political competition/conflict? If one accepts that AQ and ISIS wage UW campaigns, how does one best disrupt, defeat, or render irrelevant their efforts? Is counterinsurgency best thought of as a purely domestic, civilian-led activity; where, as in all domestic emergencies, the military is always in support, last in and first out? It has been offered that internal, revolutionary insurgency differs from democracy only in legality; and that causation is rooted in how some distinct demographic feels about the governance affecting their lives.  How does this perspective affect counterinsurgency operations?
