He was among the first small handful of pickers in Canada to begin playing Pedal Steel Guitar. Noted as an early member of the house band on CBC TV's Tommy Hunter Show, over the course of his long career Ollie backed up legends such as Ray Price, Jean Shepard and, Jim Reeves. His playing is featured on albums by Canadian heroes Gordon Lightfoot, Murray McLauchlan and, Dick Damron along with countless other "lost" Canadian Country sessions on the Arc and Marathon/Paragon labels by singers like Chef Adams, Brent Williams, Al Hooper and, Bill Long. He's even credited as the Steel Guitarist on Funkadelic's 1972 album, America Eats Its Young, and I sure wish I'd known that ahead of our conversation.

On this week's show, it's an honour to have one of Canada's finest-ever singer-songwriters, Murray McLauchlan, sit down for a wide-ranging and deeply interesting conversation. Murray is an inductee into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, an Order of Canada recipient, and an 11-time Juno Award-winning artist. On his latest album, Hourglass, he challenged himself to look within and address issues pertaining to systemic racism, privilege, and economic disparity. With Mike, of course, Murray chats about songwriting and the process of writing Hourglass; what separates good political songs from the irritating ones; being in the legendary Yorkville folk scene of the 1960s and '70s; navigating the industry; what he's learned from his wife, Denise Donlon, who is one of the most influential people on the business side of Canada's music industry; and that time Stephen Harper had him audited for opposing the war in Afghanistan.

Bernie Finkelstein is my guest on the show this week. It's a natural companion piece to last weeks' interview with Bruce Cockburn. If you haven't heard that one (Episode 19), please check it out as well! Bernie has been in the biz for decades, originally starting out as a helper and manager for folk artists and rock bands around Toronto's buzzing scene in the mid/late 60's. His early success in the US with The Paupers and working with the legendary Albert Grossman (Bob Dylan's manager) led him back to Toronto to start his own label, True North Records. He made his mark early signing Bruce Cockburn, a relationship that continues to this day. His other successes have included clients like Murray McLauchlan, Dan Hill, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Stephen Fearing, and he even signed a little weirdo instrumental band from Vancouver called Zubot and Dawson. Bernie has great stories from all of those eras and tells them in his recent book "True North", but it's more fun to hear him tell them in person, so Bernie was nice enough to spend some time with me for the show. Enjoy my conversation with Bernie Finkelstein!
