June 20, 2009. Bowen Island, British Columbia. While attending a house party, 17-year old Jodi Henrickson leaves during the early morning hours with her estranged 20-year old boyfriend, Gavin Arnott. Numerous witnesses report seeing them walking down the road together and Gavin claims that after they got into an argument, he and Jodi went their separate ways before she vanished without a trace. Since Gavin had a history of violence against Jodi and a no-contact order at that time, he becomes a person of interest in her disappearance, but there is no evidence to implicate him and Jodi is never found. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a missing persons case from Canada which has gone unsolved for nearly 16 years. Special thanks to listener Katie Hyde for narrating the opening of this episode. We speak with friend of the show Ross Lockhart about his recent book (and PhD work) called West Coast Mission: The Changing Nature of Christianity in Vancouver. The book takes an in-depth look at 12 churches and two faith-based organizations in the Vancouver area. It takes up themes that are familiar to almost everyone who has been part of a church in the last couple of decades. We talk about differences in approach to the “outside world” and how things have changed in regards to how churches relate to society as a whole. There is both consolation and challenge in our conversation. What might real theological change look like as compared with change of style or strategy? Ross is the Dean of St. Andrew's Hall, the Presbyterian Church in Canada college at the University of British Columbia. Ross is also the Professor of Mission Studies at Vancouver School of Theology, where he teaches courses in practical theology. Ross holds a PhD from Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam and is the author of Lessons from Laodicea: Missional Leadership in a Culture of Affluence; Beyond Snakes and Shamrocks: St. Patrick's Missional Leadership Lessons for Today; co-author of Better Than Brunch: Missional Churches in Cascadia as well as Christianity: An Asian Religion in Vancouver and editor of Christian Witness in Cascadian Soil. Ross' latest project is West Coast Mission: the Changing Nature of Christianity in Vancouver published this fall by McGill-Queen's University Press. Ross lives with his family on Bowen Island, B.C. Ross's newest book is available now.

I'm currently seated on a deck that looks out over the Pacific Ocean, on Bowen Island in British Columbia. I can smell the saltwater from here and hear the lap of the waves. When I look up, I see the mountains and little islands across the bay. Wildflowers dot the hillside. I have an iced coffee and pen and paper. I'm not sure how this scenario could be more idyllic. She has her own scientific approach and lens to Tantra. She has orgasmed in MRI machines for science (for you, and for her), just to make sure that there wasn't some kind of hidden danger in orgasming so long that she questioned if she was going to be okay.  She is a master at what she has coined 'Joygasms', and today, she's going to teach you how to do it too! Meet our guest: Sensa is a Renaissance woman who explores the world with insatiable curiosity. She graduated with dual degrees in Civil and Common Law, in addition to holding a teaching degree. Energetic Orgasms Expert: Sensa has achieved more than 150 energetic orgasms in a day, with some lasting up to 5 minutes. She has explored various aspects of energetic orgasms, ranging from light touch to intense emotions. Her greatest achievement as a teacher is that 90% of her class succeeded in reaching an energetic orgasm after just one hour of instruction. Life Coach: When people reached out to her for coaching in sensuality, Sensa discovered her passion and expanded her practice to other areas of life. Her experience as a lawyer helps her identify inconsistencies and false beliefs that hinder people's lives, particularly those struggling with depression and procrastination. Event Facilitator: Sensa organizes events for adults to connect with their inner child, such as services for agnostic and atheist individuals using clown techniques to provide them with community, fun, and a sense of spirituality. She also officiates themed weddings. Professional Cuddler: Sensa founded the first cuddling company in Canada, which unfortunately closed due to COVID-19. She was the keynote speaker at the first international professional cuddling expo and has been interviewed by media outlets worldwide, including those in Hong Kong, France, and Poland. Let's talk about death! And grief, and loss, and the profound transformation that can occur in the aftermath of large shifts and losing parts of ourselves. Maybe it's not a person you lost, maybe it's a relationship, a hope, a dream, or a physical ability… we all experience loss. But the question is, how do you deal with it? And how do we help loved ones through it? Speaking with us today is Death Doula Maux Elworthy. She is a trauma-informed coach and suicide intervention educator creating spaces for conversations about grief, loss, death and mental health in our everyday lives. Listen in as she teaches us what she has learned about surviving & thriving in times of loss & grief.    Because… our culture really doesn't talk about these realities often enough or in intimate ways. Opening yourself up to grief, is really opening yourself up to deeper levels of love and connection. They are two sides of the same coin, and one often cannot exist without the other. Living in fear of the grief that might one day come from loving deeply, stops some from loving altogether, and that is not how we want to live.  CONTACT: Join the WhatsApp Community: https://chat.whatsapp.com/Eo5RM4TYTBt4M4RT21Ohew  Website: www.krishall.ca   Email List:  https://www.subscribepage.com/reclaim-your-radiance Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reclaim_your_radiance  TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@reclaimyourradiance Retreat: Wild Women Rising  Apply for your chance to participate in a powerful sacred sensuality retreat on Bowen Island, BC, from September 20-22nd. Oh, wow, get ready for Adrienne Gruber's amazing conversation about her fourth book, which is also her first essay collection, MONSTERS, MARTYRS AND MARIONETTES: ESSAYS ABOUT MOTHERHOOD, and the numerous threads that connect it to Sarah Manguso's memoir ONGOINGNESS: THE END OF A DIARY. We talk about Gruber's movement from poetry to prose, about the expansiveness of Manguso's memoir, the lack of expansiveness in motherhood in general, how both books talk about the postpartum haze, how parenthood does wild things with the concept of linear time, the surrealness of Gruber's pandemic pregnancy, the gift of knowing you want children, what kinds of experiences need to be lived before than can be imagined, and so much more. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. Monsters, Martyrs, and Marionettes is a revelatory collection of personal essays that subverts the stereotypes and transcends the platitudes of family life to examine motherhood with blistering insight.Documenting the birth and early life of her three daughters, Adrienne Gruber shares what it really means to use one's body to bring another life into the world and the lasting ramifications of that act on both parent and child. Each piece peers into the seemingly mundane to show us the mortal and emotional consequences of maternal bonds, placing experiences of “being a mom” within broader contexts—historical, literary, biological, and psychological—to speak to the ugly realities of parenthood often omitted from mainstream conversations.Ultimately, these deeply moving, graceful essays force us to consider how close we are to death, even in the most average of moments, and how beauty is a necessary celebration amidst the chaos of being alive.ADRIENNE GRUBER is an award-winning writer originally from Saskatoon. She is the author of five chapbooks, three books of poetry, including Q & A, Buoyancy Control, and This is the Nightmare, and the creative nonfiction collection, Monsters, Martyrs, and Marionettes: Essays on Motherhood. She won the 2015 Antigonish Review's Great Blue Heron poetry contest, SubTerrain's 2017 Lush Triumphant poetry contest, placed third in Event's 2020 creative non-fiction contest, and was the runner up in SubTerrain's 2023 creative non-fiction contest. Both her poetry and non-fiction has been longlisted for the CBC Literary Awards. In 2012, Mimic was awarded the bp Nichol Chapbook Award. There's something about real and relatable human stories that is just hard to look away from...On this episode we gather with friends to see how life can really force us all to take a second look at our lives.  It's time for 'Re:Uniting' which is in theatres now.Starring Jesse L Martin (Law & Order, The Irrational), Michelle Harrison (The Flash), Roger Cross (War For the Planet of the Apes), David James Lewis (Child's Play), Carmen Moore (Nancy Drew) and Bronwen Smith (Firefly Lane) as six best friends from college who reconnect for their 25 year reunion.   When Rachel, played by Michelle Harrison, receives life-changing news, she secretly grapples with her mortality while playing host to her friends who have grown up and gone their separate ways since college. Carrie, a mother of 3, Natalie, a workaholic neurosurgeon, former football star turned sportscaster Collin, and playboy man-child Danny join Rachel and her husband at their picturesque home on the beautiful and secluded Bowen Island. As soon as they are all together it's like no time has passed; they laugh, drink and dance the night away. Rachel's nostalgia is echoed by the group as they realize how much time has gone by, and how much they have all changed. As secrets are revealed, they are forced to change the way they look at their futures. With echoes of films like 'The Big Chill' there's something about 'Re:Uniting' that just feels so genuine that you won't want to look away from this fantastic ensemble piece. In advance of the film's release we had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with writer/director Laura Adkin to talk about the origins of the story and so very much more....

After an unsettling encounter with a Holocaust denier in 2021, the small, energetic Jewish community of Bowen Island, BC, decided they needed to become more visible. That meant, among other things, showcasing their culture and traditions to the rest of the island. Matthew van der Giessen had an idea. Though he isn't an artist—he's a massage therapist—he began collecting pieces of driftwood off the beach to create a six-foot-tall hanukkiah. The makeshift menorah, completed in 2021, now stands among the island's annual display of Christmas trees and has received a lot of media coverage. This week, despite needing a few touch-ups, the sculpture is back—and van der Giessen joins The CJN Daily to describe his creative process, his own journey to Judaism and how his piece speaks volumes about the unique spirit of his tight-knit island's community. The blind leading the blind. One of our guests this week on Outlook says: “That is like the best idea ever!” On our first episode of October's Blindness Awareness Month (or what we like to call BAM) we're speaking with Alex Jurgensen and Jessica Gladysz from the Canadian Organization of the Blind and Deafblind (COBD) - Alex is director of operations and community engagement with the Camp Bowen Division and Jessica is Director of Programs and Student Affairs for the Pacific Training Centre Division and has been of the Camp Bowen Division in various roles. Out on the west coast, a short 20 minute boat trip off west Vancouver there is an island, the home of a community of blind Canadians for over 100 years since the CNIB was there. They created a camp for blind children and Camp Bowen on Bowen Island is where many blind children, including our guests, met and discovered friendship and common ground. There, they weren't isolated or blocked by barriers. Instead, they were welcomed and found out, many for the first time, that it was okay to be blind. And on the show today, we learn about the history of Bowen Island and Camp Bowen and the impression it left on so many, about how the Pacific Training Centre for the Blind in Victoria and Camp Bowen (Camp Bowen Working Group) came together with their programs for teaching blind Canadians the skills they needed, in many cases for the first time, for success, and the kinds of programs offered as the Canadian Organization of the Blind and Deafblind was formed and is rapidly and over time expanding. Now Camp Bowen and COBD offer summer camps, braille literacy camps for kids, and music camps for children and adults and provide a glamping situation, alongside activities such as horseback riding, swimming, boating, self-defense, boardgames, camp fires, and movie nights. They have received federal funding for a 4-year plan, access to a beach front with 11 thousand square feet on 2 and a half acres, and will offer 8 camps in summer and are now running a 10-month intensive independent skills program (eventually for up to 38 people) where students are taught cane travel, braille instruction, assistive tech training, cooking and home skills, and employment preparedness. We're no longer being taken care of (by CNIB or others) - the program is Blind People In Charge and they really are, including (for the first time in Canada) the Deafblind community right there in COBD's name. Blind and Deafblind Canadians have been a major part of Bowen Island for a century, a solid part of the culture, and have big plans for the future. So check out everything they offer on their website, including 21 programs, (some virtual), a tech loan bank, and blind hub with lots of resources. Also consider making a donation if you have the means as these programs are all so important here in Canada and require funding to continue. https://cobd.ca

Although Vancouver Island is known to experience some of the balmiest weather during the winter in Canada, Vancouver isn't too far behind. It's considered to be the third warmest city north of the border in the colder months.By Steve FennellRVing and staying at an RV park in Vancouver is all about experiencing one of the province's most exciting destinations. Like visiting any large city, it's ‘all about the location' and easy access to services and attractions. While there are a few comfortable campgrounds around the Greater Vancouver Area, Capilano River RV Park is at the heart of the action, while still providing comfort whether you stay for a few days, several weeks or all winter.Located in West Vancouver along the Capilano River that flows into the Burrard Inlet near the Lions Gate Bridge, the park is located about 10 minutes off the Trans-Canada Highway via Hwy 99 and Tomahawk Rd. Once in the park, the secured, gated property is supervised 24/7 and its 205 sites can accommodate a variety of RVs, including larger motorhomes and fifth wheels. You can also experience the heart of Vancouver. It's a quick drive over the Lions Gate Bridge and another 10-15 minutes to enjoy Stanley Park, English Bay Beach, Granville Island or the number of unique and trendy neighbourhood districts. The natural attractions are popular as well. West Van offers some of the city's best (and easiest) hiking trails. Plan your days visiting Cypress Falls Park with its towering 300-year-old trees and abundant wildlife or take one of the three easy loops in LightHouse Park among an old-growth forest.Feel like seeing more of the West Coast culture? The park is about 20 minutes to The BC Ferries' Horseshoe Bay Terminal from where you can sail to Snug Cove on Bowen Island with its unique cafés, pubs, and restaurants or Nanaimo with its shoreside attractions. Langdale is also popular. It's located at the south end of the famed Sunshine Coast and will provide great day - or even multi-day - trips. 1. The clean, spacious grounds of the Capilano River RV Park. 2. The secured front entrance to the park's grounds. 3. Need to relax? The hot tub is open throughout the year. 4. The heated pool is a popular area during the summer. 5. Many services and personal essentials are easily accessible from the park.

Shelley Moore is the author of One Without the Other: Stories of unity through diversity and inclusion. Her website blogsomemoore.com has numerous resources and information about her endless work in this complex field of inclusive education and competency-based learning.  Shelley also consults throughout BC, Canada and across north America. Shelley's Social Media Info:blogsomemoore.com @tweetsomemoore We asked the Twittersphere if they had questions for Shelley about inclusion and outdoor learning.  We tackled 4 questions: 1)Alyssa Stapleton asked: "How might the universal design principles be adapted for outdoor learning opportunities? What might planning for outdoor learning for all learners and inclusivity look like at different levels within an educational and school setting? How does collaboration with learning support teachers and school-based teams look like in this context?"  2)Josie Zahn:  "What dream team!! Outdoor learning is fantastic for all students. The only issues I've had have been around safety… For example, little ones who aren't aware of the boundaries (when there's only one adult) and sensory issues (wet feet, rain) … and preplanning helps these!" 3)Shannon Mills but actually hers is more of a comment.  She says that: "In our cohort we have 3 students who have autism and all thrive during outdoor learning. We visit the forest every day and it is a part of the day they most look forward to. They get very disappointed if there is a wind warning and we can't go. Get outdoors. It's the best." 4)Anna Dutke asks: "Any tips or advice on writing their special education goals/objectives so that they can be worked on in an outdoor classroom environment? Or examples of how teachers have incorporated data collection in an outdoor classroom? I often hear time and data collection as being barriers." Other Things Mentioned:Book: A Stone Sat Still by Brendan WenzelAnna Dutke: Outdoor educator in Minnesota – twitter: @ADutke Novelty Nature Note:Did you know that the hippopotamus milk is pink?!Shelley lives on Bowen Island and part of her reconciliation journey was to get to know her new place a little better.  It's part of the Squamish territory and is named Nex̱wlélex̱m.  Shelley also mentioned Glass Coral Reef. It was thought that glass coral only grew in one place north west corner of Vancouver island.  But it has been recently discovered on the north west corner of Bowen island.  Shelley is about to live in a UNESCO marine heritage site!
